Ministry gives LASEMA power bikes, other tools

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) yesterday took delivery of several combi tools, concrete cutters, spreaders and rams.

It also got nine power bikes, which would be deployed in emergency scenes for on-the-spot assessment to  rescuers determine the kind of equipment to use.

The equipment will   improve search-and-rescue for persons trapped in cars and collapsed buildings.

Commissioner for Special Duties Oluseye Oladejo  handed over the equipment  to LASEMA at the agency’s office in Oshodi, Lagos.

Oladejo,  represented by his Permanent Secretary, Dr. Jemilade Longe, said the equipment would ensure speedy and proper extrication of those trapped.

Oladejo said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s  investments in emergency management had boosted investors’ confidence in the state.

He said: “We have noticed that when people get trapped in vehicles during accidents and emergency, responders are on ground at the emergency scene, the absence of the equipment that would enable them to break into the affected vehicles to rescue the victims usually render the whole operation meaningless.”

LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu said: “The procurement of the equipment will aid proper extrication and timely rescue to trapped victims in any form of life threatening incidents.

“The power bikes would also be deployed for monitoring and surveillance towards mitigating some unexpected events which may  lead to loss of lives and properties,” he said.

  • Security Fund gets 30 power bikes

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday donated 30 BMW power bikes to the  Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

Ambode also promised to organise a security summit before the end of the first quarter next year in order to fashion a robust 25 year security master plan for the state.

He spoke at the 11th town hall meeting which also marked the 10th anniversary of the LSSTF.

The governor hinted that the government might come up with a mandatory monthly security levy per house to boost the capacity of the fund.

“The way to go is for the state to have a sinking fund that is completely autonomous and independent of the government to coordinate all security spending,” he said.

Soon, Ambode said,  it would be mandatory for public buildings, including banks, restaurants, eateries, schools, bars, hotels and event centres, among others, to install close circuit television, (CCTV) to support the state’s crime busting efforts.

The governor, who described the fund  as  a “historic child of destiny”, said it had in the last 10 years represented all that is possible when the people join hands with the government to “take their destiny in their hands.”

LSSTF’s Chairman Mr Oye Hassan-Odukale said Lagos is the safest state in the country because the government continued to fund security.

He said in the last 10 years, the Fund has injected over N21 billion into the security architecture of the state, adding that had it not been for continuous support of its partners, the fund would have folded up.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to seven organisations.

  • Gbenga Egunjobi’s unhidden love for bikes

Gbenga Egunjobi is one individual who is not in the habit of tooting his horn. After all, it is not the whistle that moves the train. His reticent nature is the major reason many consider him one of the quietest bigwigs in the Lagos social circle. Except you have a business deal with him or patronise his Beachland Boat Club in Apapa, Lagos, you may never know more than a thing or two about him.

The Managing Director of Beachland Boat Club is one upwardly mobile young man who prefers a small, close knit group of friends. According to those who know him, the highly connected Egunjobi has very expensive hobbies. His favorite pastimes include taking a cruise on the lagoon or Atlantic with his jet skis, boats or biking with his friends. He is reputed as one of the collectors of the most expensive bikes in Nigeria. He is also a keen follower of the MotoGP race as often travels to watch it as a keen fan of Jorges Lorenzo.

Presenting the bikes on behalf of the group, the Manager, Star Deepwater Operation and Maintenance, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr Seghes I. Samuel, said the gesture was part of the group’s efforts aimed at supporting the Corps’ road safety initiative.

Seghes said using the bikes would enhance effective performance of responsibilities in the commission such as road safety management and safe enforcement of strategies.

He said being a safety core value group, such donations were given to FRSC in Delta, sponsoring regular training programmes for drivers, providing helmets for motorcyclists and the group has even organised safety enlightenment programmes for truck drivers and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. In the spirit of helping children to imbibe road safety culture early in life, the group has organised child road safety campaigns in many states of the federation.

Receiving the gifts on behalf of the Corps, the RS2 Zonal Commander, Nseobong Charles Akpabio, thanked the group and promised that it would be used for the purpose for which they were donated.

The two-in-one event was also used to embark on a one-day sensitisation exercise for motorists and other stakeholders within the state.

Speaking, Akpabio said the event was organised for the motorists to be acquainted with all the necessary information about tyres usage and when to discard them to avoid accidents and deaths on the roads.

He lamented that the misuse of vehicles has turned to an instrument of self-destruction in the hands of mankind.

Akpabio said: “Road crashes does not discriminate the rich from the poor, young against old, lets change our attitude on the use of roads to avoid incessant crashes,” he added.

The high point of the event was the field campaign on ‘know your tyre’ where motorists, vulcanisers and stakeholders were guided on the exact gauge of their tyres and how to identify good tyres.

Present at the event were captain of all industries, vulcanisers and all transportation unions.

  • Lagos impounds 50 power bikes

The Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences has impounded 50 200cc motorcycles used for commercial purposes on prohibited routes.

The bikes were impounded on Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Mile 2, WEMPCO Road, Victoria Island and Ikoyi.

Since regular motorcycles have been restricted from operating on highways, commercial motorcyclists have resorted to using 200cc bikes to convey passengers on prohibited routes.

The Task Force Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, said power bikes are not meant for commercial purposes and that when they ply the highways, only the rider must be on it.

He said they are meant for courier companies and private use, adding: “The law did not say you have to replace other bikes with 200cc for business. This is not the intention of the state government. They are not for commercial purposes; they are for courier and private use.

“Anybody caught using 200cc bikes for commercial purpose will be charged to court and the bike will be forfeited to the state government. We have arrested some offenders and arraigned them in court. They were convicted and made to pay fine.

“When we arrest offenders, their passengers always tell the truth but the riders lie. Some of them even make use of securityagencies’ emblems to escape.”

Sulaiman said the state government has procured 200 power bikes for the police to be used to chase erring commercial motorcyclists.
