Actress Iyabo Ojo has shared the inspiring story of how she began her journey in Nollywood, acknowledging her senior colleague, Bimbo Akintola, for giving her a breakthrough despite having no personal connections in the industry.

Speaking on the Glass House show with comedian Ayo Makun, Ojo recounted her journey from her days as a vibrant and outspoken secondary school student.

She revealed that her passion for the arts was evident early on, as she actively participated in singing, acting, rapping, and debating, which set the foundation for her acting career.

“For me I’ve always wanted to be in entertainment, so I was involved in all social activities in secondary school. I was very famous, from secondary school not as Ojo, as Ogunro.

“For years I didn’t know which exactly, whether I wanted to sing, I was singing, rapping, debating”, she said.

She said that after completing secondary school, she visited veteran actress Bimbo Akintola’s house, where she auditioned on the spot.

According to her, Bimbo Akintola’s movie ‘Out Of Bounds’ inspired her to venture into the movie scene.

“Back to acting, I watched Bimbo Akintola, and there was this movie I saw, it was Out Of Bounds, and I just said this is what I want to do, this is who I wanna be. This is what I want and that was it for me. That’s when I made up my mind.”

Unable to cry on command, Ojo said she still managed to convince Bimbo Akintola of her acting potential.

She shared that Akintola took her under her wing and introduced her to veteran actor Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey, who ultimately helped her land her first acting role.

“I started moving around with her and I was going with her for auditions, then she introduced me to uncle Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey and his beautiful wife.

“They were so nice to me and one day he just gave me a note somewhere in Surulere. So I took the note and I went there.

“I was very excited at least for the first time I was going to have that opportunity to work in front of the camera and that was a big deal for me”, she said.

Ojo landed her debut role as a sub-lead actress in the 1998 movie ‘Satanic’.

Akintola disclosed that she never dated any actor throughout her career because she considered them as colleagues and “brothers” in the industry.

She also emphasised her commitment to maintaining a professional work environment.

“No, I never dated any actor at any point in my career; I don’t like you people. I’ve never been attracted to an actor so to speak. All of you are my brothers, straight. It’s not about the kind of men I’m attached to; I just wasn’t attracted to people in the workplace.

“My frame of mind when I come to work is the frame of work of an actor who wants to be professional, so I don’t see you as dateable people, all of you. I don’t see it. We have handsome actors but I’ve never thought of dating any one of them…honestly. It doesn’t mean they didn’t toast me though”, she said.

The actress also addressed past controversies, including false claims about her personal life.

She shared that sensationalised stories, such as claims about her wardrobe choices, were fabricated to generate attention.

“When I first started, there was a lot of controversy and all sorts of things written about me; horrible stuff. There was a part where people were saying I don’t wear underwear. I think it is that news like that flies and sells so you have more traction and more people on the blog and people buying the papers. People want to read about funny things like that, it’s even better now, back then they used to cook up stories, all sorts of stories”, she said.

“Some of the lifestyles we see on social media can be real, and if it’s real, where does it come from? People come up to me and say, look at those actresses. They are very rich, and I tell them that I am not rich.

“When you see them, ask them what they do because we know how much they sell films. From a lot of actresses I see, I don’t know if it’s from their rich homes or if there are other businesses they’re doing.

“We have heard about actresses dating politicians and all of that, and we know things like that truly happen”, she said.

    Title:  Heaven’s Hell

    Duration: 95 minutes

    Producer: Katung Aduwak

Cast: Nse Ikpe Etim, Fabian Adeoye, Bimbo Akintola, OC Ukeje, Kalu Ikeagwu, Gideon Okeke, Damilola Adegbite, Linda Ejiofor, Chet Anekwe, Bimbo Manuel, Katherine Obiang, Femi Jacobs

Domestic violence or abuse is an epidemic all over the world. Anyone can be affected regardless of age, gender or race. And whether physical or psychological, most victims tend to be women. Yet, the problem is often overlooked or denied.

Heaven’s Hell is a tragedy which helps to liberate people and inspire someone to get out of a bad relationship. The film, based on true story, tells a story of two best friends and their husbands. On the surface, their relationship seems unbreakable, filled with undiluted love and care but beneath is deceit, betrayal, darkness and death.

Fabian Adeoye (Edward) suffers violence trauma in his childhood. When he becomes an adult, he tends to bring out this abuse in his marital life. He finds beating a natural thing to do. This led to the death of his first wife abroad. He returns to Nigeria with a different name and marries Nse Ikpe Etim (Alice). Their relationship is healthy until their wedding night when a twisted fate begins for Alice. Who would have known that Edward is just a monster in human apparel?

A marriage relationship between Bimbo Akintola (Tsola), Alice’s best friend and Chet Anekwe (Jeff), which seemed perfect also crashed as a result of Damilola Adegbite (Janet) promise to Tsola.

I am highly impressed with the actors for playing their roles well, especially Nse Ikpe Etim and Bimbo Akintola. They stood with each other through thick and thin as it is expected of good friendship. Well, I’ve known them to always put on a good performance. Also, the violence scene where Nse stabs Fabian and the firing squad felt so real that it keeps the viewers’ eyes glued to the action. And for the downsides, the movie subtitle wasn’t good enough as some words were misspelt.

It is educational morally as it seeks to discourage domestic violence in the society. I must say a big kudos to the producer of this movie for it opens up a conversation to the viewers and teaches morals. And unlike some movies with flat storylines, ‘Heaven’s Hell’ is full of suspense and tension.

  • Ireti Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, others for Ijeoma Grace Agu’s ‘Zena’

‘Zena’, she said, is basically a love story; a fantasy epic about a cult of Amazonic women who live and exist without men. However they kidnap men for procreation and castrate them afterwards.

“This they do every twenty years. It’s time for the new crop of warrior girls to hunt for men and one of them defies the age long tradition when she falls in love with a captive and decides to do otherwise. Would they succeed? It is something that everyone will love to see when it finally hits the cinemas,” she enthused.

Speaking on the challenges of producing the movie she stated; “As with every other film, the challenges were predominantly, lack of funds. Investors didn’t come through as promised. Regardless we pushed through being a production that is worth the effort.”

Bimbo Akintola speaks on her role in ‘Pathetic’

Nollywood actress, Bimbo Akintola, has described the movie, ‘Pathetic’, as a reality for everyone. According to the actress, the issue of domestic abuse is not exclusive to celebrities as has been speculated.

According to the actress, domestic abuse is not just about being a celebrity but being a celebrity didn’t make it easy on the marriage in that sense.

“It happens to women. It can be because of your riches, it can be because of anything else but the man behaved the way he did not because she was a celebrity but because he had issues with himself that he needed to deal with. A man that beats a woman has issues; a man that can kill obviously has issues. So, it doesn’t matter if she was a celebrity or not, his instinct would have still come out and would have shown. He would have beaten any woman that he married because that is the sort of person that he is,” she said.

Reacting to stories on whether she has ever been exploited in the manner the movie portrayed, the 93 Days actor said; “It’s not something that has happened to me personally because I have not been married before. I am single.”

Set to be released at the cinemas come March 24, ‘Pathetic’ is a human interest story produced by Dayo Amusa.

  • Bimbo Akintola professes love for KOK in Professor Johnbull

Bimbo Akintola professes love for KOK in Professor Johnbull

Irregular power supply and the attendant hassles caused by the various individual palliative measures deployed by Nigerians to grapple with the endemic problem is the thrust of Episode 11 of Professor Johnbull.

The television satire, sponsored by Globacom, was broadcast last Tuesday on NTA Network, NTA International and StarTimes.

The episode poetically titled Voice of the City aptly refers to the noise produced by the various generators deployed by citizens eking out a living and those trying to fight the heat at night. Professor Johnbull’s visiting nephew from United States, Dr. Ifeanyi Ogunyemi, experienced insomnia and hallucination as a result of the twin combination of generator noise which he described as “sleeping in a factory” and the oppressive heat.

The altercation which escalated to litigation between Madam Doris (Patience Ozokwor), a nurse on night duty trying to catch sleep during the day and Olaniyi, the restaurateur, powering his generator to cool his drinks and preserve his ‘nkwobi,’  was used to depict another instance of the trauma being experienced by Nigerians as a result of erratic power supply.

The different types of myths surrounding generator use like old generators make the loudest noise and the use of generators as status symbols were also dispelled in the episode which also revealed Ufoma’s (Bimbo Akintola) love for the widower, Professor Johnbull.

Wrapping up the episode in his characteristic manner, Professor Johnbull who posited that the problem was as old as time, made a case for alternative sources of electricity generation, good neighbourliness and cessation of vandalism of electricity facilities.
