    Bingham varsity secures approval for new undergraduate, postgraduate programmes

    Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, has secured the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run eight new undergraduate and 19 postgraduate programmes.

    The undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Film and Multimedia Studies; B.Sc. Industrial Physics; BSc Data Science; B.Sc. Public Relations; B.Sc. Psychology; B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies; Bsc Public Administration, and Bsc Interior Architecture and Design. 

    The postgraduate programmes are PhD Architecture; MSc & PhD Architecture; PGD, MSc & PhD Mathematics; PGD, MSc & PhD Physics; PGD, MSc & PhD Political Science; PGD, MSc & PhD Sociology; PGD, MSc. Entrepreneurship, Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and PGD Environmental Chemistry.

    “This has raised our total undergraduate programmes from 40 to 48 and our PG programmes from 40 to 59,” Vice-Chancellor of Bingham University, Prof Haruna Ayuba, said during the 6th convocation ceremony and 20th anniversary of the university at the weekend.

    The event featured the award of first degrees and postgraduate degrees to 1,574 graduands from the 2024/2025 academic session, alongside the unveiling of a commemorative book, “Bingham University @ 20,” chronicling the university’s journey.

    During the event, the vice-chancellor also announced the approval for a first joint postgraduate degree programme between Bingham University and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

    He stated, “The National Universities Commission has approved the first joint postgraduate degree programme between Bingham University and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, under the Twining and Articulation Model of NUC’s Transnational Education programme.

    “The collaboration provides an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen and enrich the academic and professional tutelage in the field of public health. 

    “At the end of the study, successful graduates will be issued a Master of Science (MSc) in Public Health of Bingham University, articulated with a Master of Public Health (MPH) professional of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom. We thank God that Bingham University is the first University in Nigeria to secure this approval.”

    The vice-chancellor also said the university, through its Zankli Research Centre, won research grants totaling N1.06 billion.

    “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant worth USD 708, 933 (equivalent of N1.06 billion) to support data and evidence gathering in Nigeria to shape TB vaccines launch scenarios across Africa; and, to develop vaccine introduction knowledge to support implementation guidance based on location preference for TB vaccine program roll out.

    “Research grant of USD598, 593 (equivalent of N897, 889, 500) from the Gates Foundation for clinical validation for viral load and CDA in Nigeria. The validity period is from October 2025 to September 30, 2027.

    i. Supplementary Grant of USD 25, 000 for TB Vax study by the Gates Foundation

    ii. Grant of USD928, 508 (N1.3 billion) for clinical validation for novel TB diagnostics in Nigeria by the Gates Foundation

    iii. The Policy Thematic team won a small grant of £1000 (one thousand pounds from the European Lung Foundation (ELF) to support lung health research.

    iv. The Nutrition Thematic Team won a supplementary grant of USD 2000 from the International Foundation for Science (IFS) for evaluation of compounds of Mucuna flagelipes against pancreatic lipase and alpha-amylase activities in tro and against obesity-related genes in silico

    “These are in addition to the ongoing research grants won by the Zankli Research Centre in 2024:

    i. Glasgow Centre for International Development (GCD) Grant worth £19, 232 (Pounds) funded by the University of Glasgow on scaling responses to TB in urban informal settlements: Gender-sensitive understanding of TB exposure surveillance methods.

    ii. The Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Grant worth USD 480, 698 (US Dollars) funded by a joint Consortium of Stop TB partnership, Fujifilm, LSTM amongst others on multi-country evaluation of FUJIfilm Silvamp TB Lam including the diagnostic accuracy of a urine-concentration devise; Dr Tayo Famojuro of the Department of Pharmacognosy won the 2024 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) United Kingdom Grant worth £5000 (five thousand pounds) for a project on characterisation of anticancer lead compounds from selected Nigerian medicinal plants.”

    Special Guest of Honour and retired Supreme Court Justice, Hon. Justice James Ogebe, commended the University for its Consistent Advancement and reiterated his pride in having served as a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

    He applauded successive administrations for providing the stability and strategic guidance that have positioned Bingham University among the country’s leading faith-based institutions.

    Justice Ogebe also paid tribute to the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof. W. B. Qurix, acknowledging his foundational contributions that significantly propelled the university’s growth.

    He further praised the incumbent Vice-Chancellor for building on that legacy through improved infrastructure, broader academic programmes, strengthened research capacity, and the creation of a supportive academic atmosphere that fosters innovation and excellence.

    Justice Ogebe underscored the university’s strong moral and spiritual grounding, noting that its culture—rooted in Christian values, integrity, critical inquiry, and lifelong learning—remains one of its most enduring assets.

    He also expressed appreciation to the NUC for its role in guiding the university through key developmental stages and facilitating growth at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

    Also speaking, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of ECWA, Rev. (Dr.) Job Ayuba Bagat Mallam offered profound thanks to God for the remarkable progress the institution has made over the last 20 years.

    He applauded the university community for its commitment to sustaining a dynamic academic and administrative environment.

    The BOT chairman also acknowledged the contributions of the Chancellor, His Royal Highness Pharmacist Luka Baba Panya, along with the Pro-Chancellor, Council members, and management team, for collectively steering the university toward continued excellence.

    He noted that the uninterrupted hosting of consecutive convocation ceremonies is a clear indicator of the institution’s maturity, stability, and effective governance.

    He reaffirmed the Board’s determination to back the university’s mission, especially as it increases academic offerings, strengthens research, and broadens opportunities for staff and students.

    He described the certification as a powerful validation of the university’s integrity and leadership within Africa’s higher education sector.

    …1,576 graduands to receive certificates on Sat

    About 1,576 students of Bingham University in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State would graduate from the institution on Saturday.

    Of the figure, 82 students bagged first class degrees; 464 bagged second class upper degrees; 260 bagged second class lower degrees; 40 bagged third class, while two bagged pass degrees.

    Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Haruna Ayuba, made the disclosure in Karu during a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the 6th convocation ceremony of the institution on Saturday.

    Ayuba further disclosed that of the 1,576 graduating students, 268 of them are Medical Doctors, while 460 are Postgraduate students.

    He said, “For the undergraduate programmes, a total of 1,116 graduands were found worthy in both character and learning to be awarded a first degree in various disciplines for which they were trained in the 2024/2025 academic session..

    “For the postgraduate programmes, a total of 460 graduands were found worthy in both character and learning to be awarded various postgraduate degrees.

    “We therefore have a total of 1,576 graduands who will be convoking on Saturday, November 15.

    “I congratulate all the graduands on behalf of the BOT, Council, Management, Senate, Staff, and all Stakeholders of the University. 

    “To demonstrate our commitment to efficient and effective service delivery to our students, their certificates will be ready for collection after the convocation ceremony.”

    Ayuba said the convocation would not only feature the academic achievements of its graduands but also a “celebration of two decades of commitment to educational excellence, spiritual development, institutional growth, and societal development.”

    Bingham varsity graduates 57 first class students

    No fewer than 2,217 students of Bingham University in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State would graduate from the institution on Saturday.

    Of the figure, 57 students bagged first class degrees, 519 bagged second class upper degrees; 576 bagged second class lower degrees, 179 bagged third class degrees while 9 bagged pass degrees.

    Vice – Chancellor of the University, Prof. Haruna Ayuba made the disclosure in Karu during a press conference ahead of the 5th combined convocation ceremony of the institution on Saturday.

    Ayuba further disclosed that of the 2,217 graduating students, 262 of them are Medical Doctors while 615 are Postgraduate students.

    He said: “For the undergraduate programmes, a total of 1602 graduands were found worthy in both character and learning to be awarded first degree in various disciplines for which they were trained in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.

    “For the postgraduate programmes, a total of 615 graduands were found worthy in both character and learning to be awarded various postgraduate degrees.

    “A significant milestone for this 5th combined convocation ceremony is that we are having the first set of PhD graduands convoking.

    “I congratulate all the graduands on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Council, Management, Senate, Staff and all Stakeholders of the University.”

    Ayuba said the convocation would witness the investiture of the university’s first Emeritus Professor for his Yakubu Mela Alhasan.

    He said: “The 5th combined convocation ceremony will also witness for the first time the investiture of our first Emeritus Professor for his invaluable contributions to academic excellence, mentorship, research and community impact spanning over 30 years as a professor.

    “Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Yakubu Mela Alhasan has been more than just a teacher; he has been a father, a mentor, and an inspiration to many. His commitment to excellence in research, education and community impact has set a standard that many aspire to, but few can achieve. With a rich body of scholarly works, vast number of mentees within Nigeria and across the world, this Professor has redefined what it means to be a scholar, an educator, a mentor and a change-agent.”

    He commended the past and present Board of Trustees members of the University; past and present Chancellor; Past and present Pro-Chancellors and Governing Councils; Past Vice-Chancellors and Management; Senate, Staff, Students; parents, and, all friends and partners of the University for contributing to the growth and development of Bingham University.

    “Through their efforts, Bingham University is making its mark in the comity of universities nationally and globally,” the vice – chancellor added.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, Prof. Haruna Ayuba has said the church has a key role to play in the transformation of social, political and economic lives of citizens.

    According to Ayuba, the church is expected to put society in a holistic growth and development-oriented direction rather than the current dependent and consumer-oriented economy.

    The vice – chancellor spoke during the first public lecture of the university delivered by a former Executive Secretary of the National Christian Pilgrims Commission, Kennedy Opara with the theme: “Empowering The Church For Greater Societal Impact.”

    Ayuba said: “We reasoned that there cannot be a better time to discuss this topic than now in view of the current economic reality that has left many people lamenting.

    “In the midst of such a hostile environment, the church is expected to play an important role in the transformation of social, political and economic life of citizens and put society in a holistic growth- and development-oriented direction rather than the current dependent and consumer-oriented economy.

    “We believe that the solution to the national and global crises is in the church. Examples abound in Scripture-Joseph in Egypt, the Israelites in Goshen, Isaac in Gerar, among others.”

    He expressed appreciation to the guest lecturer Opara, for accepting to deliver the lecture.

    Opara noted that as a cornerstone of communities worldwide, the church holds immense potential for catalysing positive change and fostering societal impact.

    He said: “The Church plays a multifaceted and pivotal role in society, encompassing spiritual, social, humanitarian dimensions. Understanding the church’s roles requires exploring its historical significance, contemporary influence, and diverse ways it engages with communities.”

    He noted that visionary leadership in the church is characterised by a deep sense of purpose, a compelling vision for the future and the ability to inspire and mobilise people towards common goals rooted in faith, values and mission.

    Opara added: “Building an empowered team for societal growth involves creating a culture of trust, collaboration and accountability where team members are encouraged to take initiative, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to achieving shared goals.

    “Empowerment strategies in the church for societal growth encompasses a range of approaches to equipping individuals, fostering collaboration, and driving positive change within communities. These strategies are essential for mobilising collective action, addressing societal challenges, and promoting holistic development.”

    Bingham varsity appoints DVC

    Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, has appointed Prof Musa Dankyau as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university.

    The university announced the appointment in a statement by its Director, Public Affairs, Daburi Misal, on Thursday.

    According to the statement, Dankyau’s appointment followed his recent election by the Senate of the university, which was approved by the University’s Governing Council.

    The statement said Dankyau, until his appointment as DVC, was the Provost of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Jos Campus.

    It noted that the new DVC would bring his wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, having served in various other capacities.

    The statement added: “Prof Dankyau is a distinguished medical professional, having graduated from the University of Jos, Nigeria, with an MBBS degree in 1994. He holds the prestigious title of Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in the Faculty of Family Medicine, which he obtained in 2000. With a career spanning over 30 years, he has been actively involved in clinical service provision, health management, and medical education.

    “Prof Dankyau holds the position of Professor of Family Medicine in Bingham University College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences and also serves as an Honorary Chief Consultant Physician at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital. He has held various leadership positions within the university, including Head of Department, Director of Training, Dean Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Deputy Provost, and Provost of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

    “Prof Dankyau’s academic interests are diverse, encompassing Family Medicine, Primary care, Behavioral medicine, healthcare management, medical education, reproductive health, and HIV. He is a prolific author, having published over 45 peer-reviewed articles and presented numerous conference papers. Additionally, he has supervised a significant number of Family Medicine Fellowship Casebooks, Fellowship dissertations, Master dissertations and undergraduate projects.”
