The Nigeria Girl Guides Association (NGGA) has launched a ground-breaking Earth Cadet initiative in collaboration with the Global Youth Empowerment aimed at empowering young leaders to take action in protecting Nigeria’s rich biodiversity.

The event themed “Growing Youth Leadership For Biodiversity Conservation” was inaugurated at the Eva Adelaja Senior Secondary School Bariga, where environmental experts and youth leaders gathered to share insights and strategies to combat biodiversity loss.

NGGA National Project Commissioner Lillian Damie, said the association aims to add its voice to the global conversation on biodiversity conservation and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those that address climate change and hunger.

She noted that the project is a 10-month initiative that aims to equip 13,200 girls from eight states with skills and relevant knowledge to take action on biodiversity conservation.

“The project will focus on building the capacity of young people to take action on environmental issues, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and supporting conservation efforts. We have been engaging with girls from 5 to 10 years, and have different categories of membership as well as carrying out activities on educating our members on how to care for their environment,” she said.

NGGA Chief Commissioner for Nigeria, Rhoda Thomas, stressed that the association is poised at making significant impact on mobilizing youths for environmental stewardship and setting the stage for collaborative effort to protect Nigeria’s  natural heritage.
