    Bird ‘turns to woman’after electrocution

There was panic yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, as a bird purportedly turned into a woman.

The incident, which occurred about 8a.m. at Agip/Ada-George junction, attracted a crowd.

The Nation learnt the bird purportedly turned into a woman after it was electrocuted by a high tension wire.

An eyewitness, Promise Amadi, who confirmed the incident, claimed the bird perched on top of a high tension pole at the junction when electricity was restored.

He said the bird was electrocuted and it fell down and purportedly turned into a woman, with cowries on her neck.

Amadi said 10 other birds on the junction flew away when the electrocuted bird fell down.

Another source, who preferred anonymity, said the bird resembled a vulture.

The eyewitness, who went spiritual, said the banner of a cleric was on the pole, adding that the power of God in the clergyman caused the miracle.

“This witch has sucked people’s blood. It is God that did this miracle. The vulture was on top of the pole when power was restored. It was electrocuted and it died. When we heard the explosion, we turned and saw a bird. Suddenly it turned to a woman, a witch.”

  • Jammeh: Butterfly that calls itself a bird!

SIR: His Excellency, Sheikh Prof. Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh has called the bluff of the rest of the world. Jammeh is talking tough and has literally told the world to go to hell. Jammeh has not only rebuffed all pleas to respect the wishes of the Gambian People and concede power to the opposition which won the presidential election late last year but has vowed to resist or even crush  any foreign invasion of the Gambia to remove him from power.

Jammeh while slamming the decision of the UN Security Council, African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) asking him to respect the wishes of the Gambia people and the constitution, had declared that only God can remove him from power even if he chooses to rule for one billion years.

Jammeh has handpicked justices of the Gambian Supreme Court to hear his legal challenge to the election which he disputes while also vowing not to concede power under any arrangements whatsoever.

His confidence seems to have been bolstered by the pledge of allegiance made by the country’s military chief but then hearing Jammeh’s rhetoric, one would mistake the Gambia for the African version of North Korea in military might.

So what big meal has Jammeh eaten like the proverbial nwa nza that has pushed him to challenge his Chi to a wrestling contest? The nwa nza is the tiny weaver bird in Igbo folklore which Chinua Achebe made allusions to in his evergreen classic Things Fall Apart. The nwa nza after a heavy meal challenged its Chi (god) to a wrestling contest.

Jammeh presides over a tiny country of less than two million people and the Gambia has less than 1,000 men under arms to defend the country from external aggression. The Gambian Military depends on military assistance from Turkey, Pakistan and Muammar Ghadaffi before his fall from power.

According to the CIA Factbook 2016, the Gambian Airforce has less than 5 aircrafts in its fleet and the Navy has nothing other than glorified patrol boats in its arsenal.  The Gambia military has not been associated with any battle feat in recent times, save for its participation in ECOMOG interventions in the Liberia and Sierra Leone in the 1990s.

In fact, the Gambia’s closest neighbour Senegal had in the past successfully intervened militarily in the Gambia to stop an attempted coup and reacting to the present situation, Senegal has indicated its willingness to enforce the UN, AU and ECOWAS resolution asking Jammeh to cede power to Adama Barrow.

Jammeh is not only weak in military strength but even more vulnerable financially. According to the World Bank, the Gambia is one of the poorest countries in the world without any significant natural resources. The country’s budget is funded through bilateral and multilateral aid while government institutions are managed through technical assistance from multilateral and bilateral donors.

Tourism is the country’s main source of foreign exchange besides foreign aid. With Jammeh’s belligerence and war like posture, he risks losing aid and tourists if he comes under the Security Council sanctions (if no military action is taken against him). So head or tail, Jammeh loses as the noose on his neck tightens.

One then wonders who or what is beating the drums for Jammeh as it is clear only him can hear the music he is dancing to.

ECOWAS and the AU must be commended for standing by the Gambian electorates and insisting on Jammeh’s exit from power, unlike in the past where the African leaders who are mostly sit-tight dictators will rally round one of their own. However, whether Jammeh will come to his senses and quit or get the Laurent Gbagbo type of humiliating treatment will be known in the coming weeks.

  • A bird willing to fly with you

CAN two broken hearts melt into one? Yes, sometimes two ‘cracking’ hearts can be resuscitated and you could have something that would last forever. A lot of people who have suffered heartaches can still find their missing ribs, if only they look around carefully. Naturally, their emotions have been blown with the winds and they are just managing to hang on. But from this emotional valley, it is still possible to move out and rediscover something new and adorable.

This can only happen when the new bird is sincere and willing to flow with you. Interestingly, this is the situation Noami is experiencing at the moment and she is happing that she allows her heart to step out of the ‘box’. At a distance, Naomi seemed to have the world in her pocket. Friends and neighbours admired and held her in high esteem because of her rare qualities. She was beautiful in and out. A pretty face, great physique and a large heart. Yet, there was just one snag: there was no Romeo in sight. And so everyone made it his or her business to be a great matchmaker just to find our dear friend a Mr. Right.

“It wasn’t as if I never really found a guy I loved or admired. Unfortunately, he died three months to our wedding. That was a fatal emotional blow, one that I never really recovered from. It actually took me a long while before I started picking the bits and pieces together because my world crumbled at that point.”

He must have been a wonderful guy, the type that you wish to spend a lifetime with. “Yes, he was a rare personality and he transformed my life while we were together. When I got the news from his younger sister, I was shocked.”

She kept on wishing it was all a dream and that someone was going to wake her up from this emotional slumber. “Most times, I kept on talking to myself and tell me that it wasn’t true.” Sadly, that never happened and the poor lady’s heart kept on sinking. “By the time I woke up, it was almost too late. All the guys I ran into and admired were all married. I was stuck and the one that desperately wanted my hand were not the kind of guy that I desired.”

From that point, yours truly was on the receiving end and hung on to life as an emotional beggar with little or no choice at all. Just when she thought that her emotional gates had been padlocked for life, another heart came passing by. “We met at a friend’s wedding anniversary. I knew that all our friends would be at the event and they would all be popping the same question at yours truly. But again, I was lonely and I needed something to fill up this vacuum. To make things easy for me, I had told myself not to take any question seriously and just make myself happy.”

Like she imagined, almost everyone turned out for the event. Two great minds locked together as one sure deserves everyone’s time and attention. I sat in a corner and tried to tuck myself away from familiar faces. Unfortunately, one of the busy bodies finally caught up with yours truly. She was clutching a male hand bag and because I hadn’t seen her in a long while, I imagined he was her ‘property’.

Well, it turned out that my assumptions were wrong. This was actually another matchmaking episode and yours truly was at the centre of the script. “Hello, Dearie! How are we today? I just saw that you don’t have any company and I thought I should introduce my cousin, Ajibade, to you.”

Nonsense! Can’t these people realise that life is not all about having a partner. Who says that I am lonely without a busy body around me? Trust Shade, she zoomed off almost immediately and didn’t wait for my opinion on the matter. What am I going to do with this emotional garbage that she dumped on me? We kept starring at one another liked Dundees and I felt like running away.

Wait a minute! It is not fair to sit on the fence and assume that you are better than the other person. So, I had this desire to help. Poor heart, only God knows who has wounded him this badly. But can two broken hearts melt into one? Then suddenly, he opened his mouth and started talking. Well, he wasn’t as bad as I thought and in a short while this familiar stranger wormed his way into my heart.

The truth of the matter is that a man can be just as afraid or even more afraid of rejection than you are? In order for a man to overcome “shyness” or even his fear of rejection, he has to feel pretty confident in himself or in the idea that if he were to ask you out, you’d respond with a “yes.” Secondly, if you’re always surrounded by a group of people, he may not have the opportunity to be free with you.

If he’s never had a one-on-one conversation with you, where you’re leading with attraction and flirting back, he may not feel too sure of the situation. This is why it’s important that if you want to maximise the chances that a man will follow-up with his attraction for you, you may just have to find a way to engage him. This way, he would definitely discover that you are both interested and available.

It is often embarrassing for men to admit they have challenges with their reproductive organs. But facing the truth can save them from heart-related diseases and stroke, Rita Ohai writes.

A man’s heart is connected to his reproductive part in more than a figurative way. Not surprising since from a physiological point of view, an erection is certainly an affair of the heart.

Erectile dysfunction may not be their favourite subject, but a new study shows why it’s one health concern that probably should not be swept under the rug.

Analysing the mechanism for effective penile activity, Dr Maxwell Jideofor said”An erection happens when the two main tubes in the penis, called the corpora cavernosa, that run the length of the penis, become filled with blood. So when men begin to have erectile dysfunction it’s a sign that there’s more widespread disease and not just for the heart but throughout all the blood vessels in the body.

“In the penis, there are more endothelial cells than in any part of the body. So any disease that causes a problem with those cells, is going to manifest itself in a male particularly.”

As we notice an increase in the number of men who become infertile or are forced to live with reproductive troubles, it is observed that more men under the age of 50 are battling penile as well as cardiac issues.

Explaining the relationship between both organs, Jideofor, says “Both erectile dysfunction and impaired heart function can be caused by reduced blood flow, which can happen when blood vessels become less flexible because of high blood pressure or other health related issues.

“In a virile man,” he continued, “the blood vessels in the penis and other places need to dilate, allowing for increased blood flow and thus an erection. Likewise, if there is something causing the vessels to constrict, the heart will not be able to pump blood to the penis and he cannot have an erection.”

Although previous evidence has shown erectile dysfunction to be linked to heart problems, since the heart and penis rely on a healthy blood flow there is a current study that finds that having a mild erectile dysfunction can increase one’s risk of a heart problem, and even of death.

The study tracked 95,000 men and found that over 7,800 of the men who had been admitted to the hospital for some sort of heart-related problem had faulty reproductive organs, and just over 2,300 had died.

It was also discovered that the men had a greater risk of all kinds of problems, like heart failure, stroke, and vascular disease among others. For example, men with severe erectile dysfunction had a greater risk of dying from any cause, whether they’d had heart trouble in the past or not.

One off the lead researchers at the Australia’s Heart Foundation, Rob Grenfell, who doubles as the hospital’s Cardiovascular Health Director, at a press briefing, said “These results tell us that every man who is suffering from any degree of erectile dysfunction should be seeking medical assistance as early as possible and also insisting on a heart health check by their general practitioner at the same time,”

He also suggested that rather than simply treating the health problem with over-the-counter medication, looking deeper into what else might be going on to underlie it is probably a very good idea.

“If you have erection issues, it’s a warning that you may also have issues with your heart. I urge any man suffering an erection difficulty to see their doctor to request a heart health check to measure their likelihood for having a heart attack in the next five years.”

Health professionals, however, advice people to rule out cases of diabetes and high blood pressure before commencing treatment for this condition.

As they say “Whatever improves the health of your heart and blood vessels is likely to improve your erections, too.”

    Preventive measures

ERECTILE dysfunction is caused by a wide range of factors notably increasing age, smoking, diabetes, depression, obesity, physical inactivity, and high blood pressure say experts.

Also nerve disorders, excessive alcohol consumption, low testosterone, and certain medications, particularly sedatives and some antidepressants can worsen the condition.

As a precautionary measure here are some actions you can take on your own:

•Stop watching too much TV or sitting at the computer. The men who watched more than 20 hours of television a week had almost half the sperm concentration as the men who watched zero hours a week.

•Eating better and watching cholesterol are also beneficial. If you smoke, quit. Smoking increases the risk of erectile dysfunction.

•Check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly, and do what’s necessary to keep them at healthy levels.

•Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes most days by walking, cycling, swimming, or engaging in a sport you like. Men who do moderate to vigorous exercise 15 hours or more per week have a significantly higher sperm concentration than those who worked out less than five hours a week.

•Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. It is helpful to limit yourself to no more than two drinks a day.

•If you think a particular medication may be causing erectile dysfunction, ask your doctor if you can switch to another drug.
