  • Bagudu urges NBA to lead in freeing Nigeria from corruption

    Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi on Monday urged the Nigeria Bar Association ( NBA ) to ensure speedy dispensation of justice and equity to free the country from pervasive corruption.

    Bagudu said at the 2018 Law Week organised by the state branch of NBA in Birnin Kebbi on Monday that in spite of efforts to stem corruption, it is still being regarded as part of the norm.

    The theme of the Law Week is `Promoting a Corrupt-Free Society.’

    “I task you to find ways of ensuring speedy dispensation of justice and equity to free our society from all forms of corruption.

    “The society still takes corruption as part of life especially in the public sector, as such our legal institution must do something to address the trend,” he said.

    He commended the association for organising the event, describing it as historic and timely.

    In his remarks, the state NBA Chairman, Mr Ebenezer Oguelina urged the state government to adopt the Administration of Criminal Justice Act ( ACJA ) to enhance quick access to justice.

    “The act was introduced for the benefit of victims, the court and society in the administration of criminal justice.

    “Many states have already adopted same and we cannot afford to be the odd one out,” he said.

    He also called for proper remuneration for workers including lawyers, adding that “If a worker is poorly paid, you cannot justly expect optimal performance from him.

    “Our members are poorly paid and there is no better forum than this to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

  • Kebbi: Rep. distributes 700,000 books to pupils

    A member of the House of Representatives, Abdullahi Muslim, has donated over 700,000 exercise books to 17 primary schools in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi.

    Muslim, who represents Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency, said while distributing the books on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi that the gesture was to assist parents and encourage enrollment.

    “The effort is made to encourage students of various schools with tools needed to effectively enhance their learning, as education is in critical condition in the state,” he added.

    The lawmaker said a committee had been set up to ensure smooth and just distribution of the books to the selected primary schools.

    “We want to assist our children to have the needed learning materials in order to excel.

    “The books will also be distributed in all the 35 wards of my constituency; what remain now are Kalgo and Bunza local government areas, and the committee will do the remaining distribution,” he said.

    He urged parents in the constituency to prioritise their children’s education for a brighter future.

    A cross section of schools headmasters commended the lawmaker for the gesture and called on him to do more as education needed more support and encouragement in the area.

    Kebbi, Ministry partner to revive Argungu fishing festival

    Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi says the state and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture are collaborating to revive the Argungu fishing festival in the state.

    The Governor disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi whike interacting with a team of journalists on facts finding mission on the agricultural revolution and other developments in the state.

    The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed had led the newsmen to Kebbi to showcase and assess the agricultural revolution being championed in the state through the Federal Government Anchor Borrower Scheme.

    Bagudu said that the Argungu fishing festival, which was last held in 2009, was suspended due to challenges of Boko Haram insurgency.

    He said the then government found it expedient to suspend the annual festival due to its susceptibility to insurgents attack because of the huge crowd it attracted.

    “The government suspended the festival until we are confident that the situation is back to normal, even though Kebbi state was not all that affected by the insurgency.

    “Since last year, we are confident that the situations are back to normal and we have been working with the ministry to revive the festival.

    “But, of course you always avoid the rainy season and there are a lot of things to be put in place like the infrastructure and the accommodation that have decayed in the course of the suspension.

    “We are working hard to ensure that all these are back in order and the sponsors are up to date in order to make it as international as possible to attract the widest audience,” he said.

    The Newsmen reports that the Federal Government identified the cultural, tourism and creative industry as one of the major sectors to diversify the economy.

    The Federal Government has been formulating policies and taking actions to unlock the huge potentials in the sector.

    The Argungu fishing festival is one of Nigeria’s internationally recognised cultural and tourism attractions.

    The festival, which has been inscribed in the World Heritage list, was said to have originated in the 16th century.

    Argungu festival, which has undergone several changes and modifications, was celebrated in 1934 to mark the end of the centuries-old hostility between the Sokoto caliphate region and the Kebbi kingdom.

    The four day event is marked by pomp and pageantry and draws national and international attention.

    At the beginning of the major event, over 5,000 fishermen and women gather close to the river and at the sound of a gunshot, they all dive into the river to fish.

    The fishing equipment used is the traditional nets and the gourds made from calabash.

    They are joined by canoes filled with drummers, plus men rattling huge seed-filled gourds to drive the fish to shallow waters.

    Vast nets are cast and shoals of fish are harvested.

    The person who catches the largest fish is awarded prize money of about 7,500 US dollars.

    In the year 2005, the winner caught a fish weighing 75kg, the biggest fish that have been caught in the festival till date.

    The festival also includes canoe racing, wild duck hunting, barehanded fishing, diving competitions and swimming.

    The festival usually marks the end of the growing season and the harvest.

    After the annual event, the 1.6 kilometre stretch of the Argungu River is protected throughout the year.

    FG to train 100 rice farmers in Kebbi – Ogbeh

    The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, says the Federal Government will train 100 rice farmers in Kebbi, as part of efforts to boost rice production in the country.

    The minister said this in Birnin Kebbi when he declared open the two-day Farmers Forum and Exhibition, jointly organised by the Kebbi Ministry of Agriculture and Daily Trust Newspapers.

    Ogbeh, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mr Abdullahi Shehu, said that Gov. Atiku Bagudu had elevated the status of Kebbi in commercial rice production.

    He said that the training of the 100 farmers from Kebbi in commercial rice production was in recognition of the success which the state government had recorded in rice production under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    In his remarks, Bagudu said that additional investments were required to significantly improve rice production in the country.

    He reiterated his determination to sustain and improve rice production in the state for local consumption and exports.

    The governor, who said that investments in agriculture had more benefits than investments in fuel subsidy, however, noted that the government was spending more money on fuel subsidy than on the Anchor Borrowers Programme for instance.

    The Kebbi Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Dandiga, said that the organisation of farmers’ forum and exhibition was part of the agricultural initiative of the Bagudu-administration.

    He said that the ministry decided to partner with the media in organising the programme because of the achievements which the state recorded under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.

    Speaking, Dr Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, described the exhibition as a good development, saying that it had the potential of creating employment opportunities for the youth in the state and country at large.

    Baru, who was represented by Mr Abdulganiyu Sani, said that the NNPC would collaborate with relevant stakeholders who were willing to invest in agriculture in the state.

    Also speaking, Malam Manir Dan Ali, the Chief Executive Officer/Editor-in-Chief of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust Newspapers, said that the forum and agricultural exhibition presented a platform for showcasing the food production potential of Kebbi and the country in general.

    Kebbi SEMA assures assembly of improved performance

     

    The Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has assured the State Assembly that it would judiciously utilise the N5 billion approved for the organisation in the 2018 budget.

    The Chairman of the agency, Alhaji Sani Dododo, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi when the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation paid a courtesy visit to the agency.

    Dododo said the agency was satisfied with the allocation, adding that it would facilitate improvement in its performance.

    “The state assembly approved N5 billion to enable the agency to continue to carry out its humanitarian services to the people of the State.

    “We urge the assembly to assist and cooperate with the agency for effective performance.

    “Also, we call on people of the state to always report any outbreak in their areas to the agency for appropriate action.”

    He said that assembly would do everything possible to support and assist the agency to achieve its mandate.

    Kebbi procures N300m Ultra Sound machines for 14 Hospitals

    Kebbi Government has procured N300 million modern ultra sound machines for 14 general hospitals in the state, the Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Umar Kambaza, has said.

    Kambaza, who represented Gov. Atiku Bagudu, during the inspection of the machines in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, said they were procured to improve health care delivery in the state.

    He said health centers for women and children especially those located in remote areas would be accorded priority in the installation of the Ultra sound machines, to help reduce maternal and new born diseases.

    According to him, the government is committed to reducing all health challenges facing women and children in the state.

    Hajiya Halima Boyi, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, called on health management committees of the benefiting hospitals to ensure proper utilization of the machines.

    Dr Aminu Bunza, the State Director, Medical Services, assured of proper maintenance of the ultra sound machines.

    Kebbi records 16 deaths from 140 destroyed houses

    The Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency ( SEMA ) says it recorded 16 deaths from 140 destroyed residential houses in 2017.

    The Executive Director of the agency, Alhaji Abbas Kamba, made this known in an interview in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

    Kamba said the data on the loss of houses was obtained from the state Fire Service Department, stressing that fire incidents also resulted in the loss of property worth billions of Naira during the period under review.

    He said the agency also recorded incidents of destructive windstorm at Maiyama, Gwandu, Aliero and Birnin Kebbi Local Government Areas where 90 per cent of the residential houses were destroyed while many people were injured.

    Kamba revealed that many lives and properties were lost on daily basis due to road crashes in the state.

    “In 2017, record shows that 46 crashes involving 41 commercial and 25 private vehicles led to the death of 55 people and 216 people injured during the period,” he said.

    According to him, flood also destroyed many residential properties in Birnin Kebbi, Jega, Aliero, Bagudo and Dandi Local Government Areas of the state.

    “Canoe and boat accidents along Dole Kaina and Yauri waterways also led to loss of lives and property in 2017,” Kamba said.

    He said the agency collaborated with the National Orientation Agency ( NOA ) to sensitise residents on how to handle inflammable materials during harmatan period across the state in order to reduce fire incidents.

    “We organised sensitisation workshop involving road managers and road users to reduce road crashes; we developed strategies on migrants and migration issues in the state; trained grass root emergency volunteer groups and traditional rulers on emergency issues, among other measures,” he said.

    The executive director said the agency would map out proactive strategies in 2018 to reduce loss of property and lives through disasters.

    Police rescue abducted boys, arrest 8 suspects

    The Police Command in Kebbi, said on Thursday that it had rescued two boys from suspected kidnappers who demanded N2.5 million ransom from their parents, resident in the state.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Kabiru, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi that the boys, aged 10 and 11 were rescued unhurt in Dakinkowa of Kontagora in Niger State.

    Kabiru said that eight suspects had been arrested in connection with the abduction and no ransom was paid before the boys were rescued.

    He said that on December 5, one Christopher Nnagbo of new prison area, Birnin Kebbi, reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Birnin Kebbi that his son, 10, had been missing since November 30.

    He said that the boy was on his way home from Anglican Church, Birnin Kebbi when he was abducted.

    “On the 5th of December, a hidden number called the victim’s mother, Mrs Angela Christopher with a view to negotiating for ransom and demanded N2.5 million before the child could be released.

    “On receipt of the report, the police swung into action. The principal suspect was arrested and the victims rescued,” Kabiru narrated.

    He said the second boy was also rescued along with the victim.

    “Effort is now underway to locate the parents of the second boy who was rescued in the operation,” he said.

    The commissioner said the victims were immediately taken to Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, for necessary observation and medical treatment.

    According to the police commissioner, the principal suspect said he was pushed into the act by the desire to settle his debt.

    Kabiru advised against people borrowing more than they could repay to avoid similar incidents.

    Man, 32, in court for allegedly raping 6-year-old girl

    A Birnin Kebbi Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday remanded one Umar Lawalli, accused of raping a six-year-old girl.

    The accused, aged 32, is a resident of Yar Fada quarters in Argungu Local Government Area.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Bello Sani told the court that the offence was committed in July, and medical records had indicated that the girl was raped.

    The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.

    When the charge was read to Lawalli, he pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Malam Muktar Tafarki, ordered that the accused to be remanded until Dec. 8, when the case will come up for further mention.

    He ordered the prosecution to conclude investigation and forward the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution, for advice.

    FUBK gets new VC

    The Federal University Birnin-Kebbi ( FUBK ) governing council, has approved the appointment of Prof. Bello Shehu, as the new Vice Chancellor of the university for a single term of five years.

    This approval was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the registrar of the university, Mr Ibrahim Mungadi.

    Mungadi said that the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor was approved by the council at its 9th meeting held on Oct. 26.

    The new Vice Chancellor, who was born on Feb. 13, 1958 in Birnin-Kebbi, would replace the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Dr Sahabi Jabo.

    Until his appointment, the statement stated that Shehu was the provost of the university’s College of Health Sciences.

    He was at various times, the Chief Medical Director of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja and Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Birnin-Kebbi.

    Shehu, a neurosurgeon, is a Fellow to several professional institutions including the West African College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, American College of Surgeons and National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria.
