Why CRK must stand alone in education curriculum – PFN

Pentecostal church leaders across the nation on Thursday rejected the revised Basic Education Curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

The curriculum, they said, is unacceptable because it collapses Christian Religious Studies (CRS) as part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values.

The church leaders insisted that CRS should stand alone as a subject to foreclose the possibility of some states acting against the interests of Christian students.

They spoke with reporters at the end of the 2nd quarter National Executive Council of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Lagos.

The well-attended meeting attracted Pentecostal leaders like General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo; Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM); Bishop Mike Okonkwo, National President of PFN, Bishop Felix Omobude; its vice, Bishop Wale Oke; National Secretary, Apostle Emmanuel Kure and other state chairmen of the body.

Omobude said the fusing of CRS into Religion and National Values was without justification while the explanations of NERDC were also unconvincing.

He said: “There is really no need nor is there any justification for the needless confusion and uncertainty the NERDC has created which has opened up the implementation of the curriculum to the whims and caprices of people with vested interests who want to impose their religious preferences on students.

“Collapsing CRK as only a part of Religion and National Values forecloses the opportunity of the subject being studied at the tertiary level by students who might so desire and this is unacceptable to us.”

While applauding the compulsory study of foreign languages, Omobude however stated more languages such as Spanish and others beyond French and Arabic should be included in the curriculum.

The expansion, he said, will allow students “enjoy greater flexibility in foreign language study and not be compelled to study a language they have no interest in, as its being reported in some states.

“We are aware of orchestrated plans to subtly use this policy as a means of forceful religious indoctrination and we maintain our stand against it,” the PFN president added.

Oyedepo maintained the revised curriculum was targeted against Christian students, calling for its reversal to guarantee religious harmony across the nation.

“What we are saying is that it is not acceptable to the Christian community. If students cannot study CRK in secondary school, it means we won’t have it at the tertiary level,” he reiterated.

On calls for restructuring, Omobude restated commitment of Pentecostal Christians to a united Nigeria.

He, however, called on the federal government to do all it can to assuage the fears and concerns of agitators through enthronement of true federalism.

“We urge the government to pay attention to the calls for restructuring and find a way to push for further devolution of powers while adopting an all-inclusive approach to governance and development in the country,” he added.

He condemned the quit notice given by northern youths to indigenes of South East extraction in the north, saying all Nigerians have the right to “live anywhere without fear of harassment.”

“Those who beat the drums of war should not be forgetful of our pasts. We cannot afford to go through the path of war again as a nation,” he stated.

Okonkwo called on northern elders to call their youths to order, saying the quit notice was a declaration of war against the south.

The PFN argued nomadic cattle-rearing has become outdated, urging states to “build ranches and develop reserves where cattle owners can manage their animals without travelling long distances where they stray into farms, destroy crops and constitute nuisance and threat to other communities.”

RCCG: Group urges Adeboye to rescind resignation as G.O.

The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye to rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

The call came in a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Abuja-based human rights group, Mr Frank Tietie, on Tuesday.

Tietie said CASER would seek a court order to compel Adeboye to reverse his decision should the “holy man of God’’ refuse to voluntarily do so.

Adeboye stepped down as the General Overseer of the RCCG in Nigeria on Saturday on the basis of the controversial Corporate Governance Code of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).

The code, which stipulates a 20-year maximum tenure for heads of religious groups and civil rights organisations, among other provisions, was suspended by the Federal Government on Monday.

But for the suspension, the regulation could have also seen the exit of other affected men of God from the headship of their churches.

They include Bishop David Oyedepo (Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners’ Chapel); Pastor William Kumuyi (Deeper Christian Life Ministry) and Bishop Mike Okonkwo (The Redeemed Evangelical Mission).

Tietie said: “CASER urges the highly revered Pastor Adeboye to change his mind and rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of RCCG.

“Where, therefore, the holy man of God refuses to review his decision to resign, CASER shall seek an order of the court to compel him to remain as the general overseer.’’

He said the group was acting, not only in the interest of members of the RCCG who respect Adeboye, but also in the interest the Church generally.

Landmark University produces 59 first class graduates

No fewer than 59 out of 570 graduating students of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara, on Friday graduated with first class honours at the university’s second convocation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the breakdown of the figure showed that 298 females and 272 male graduated from the institution’s three colleges.

The Institution’s Chancellor, Bishop David Oyedepo, in his address said both the government and the governed had solutions to the country’s present food security problem.

He said the time was ripe for stakeholders to proffer a lasting solution to the nation’s perennial food insufficiency and poverty challenges to ensure desired growth and development for the country.

“It is time for us to think, rethink and put actions to our thoughts in dealing with this monster of food insecurity and the impending danger of hunger and starvation,’’ Oyedepo said.

He described agriculture as a catalyst for the nation’s socio-economic development and major employer of labour if properly harnessed.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Afolayan, said the institution was vigorously pursuing infrastructural development plans that would enhance effective teaching and learning.

Afolayan said the institution was also improving its community relations with the host community and its neighbours so that the impact of the new innovation in modern agriculture methods and techniques could be felt by them.

Prof. Gbolagade Ayoola, President, Farm and Infrastructure Foundation, in a lecture said the recent political change in the country would offer several policy changes to enhance the development of the agricultural sector.

Ayoola who spoke on “Agriculture, Policy and Tertiary Education in the Dispensation of Change” called for fine-tuning the nation’s present agriculture policies.

  • How bleak is 2015?

A reader of my last column titled If 2015 comes was apparently not pleased with Bishop David Oyedepo’s declaration of the New Year as that of Heaven on Earth which was cited in the piece. He was more worried that, according to him, I believed the Bishop’s ‘fairy tale’.

“I live in the Niger Delta and there is mass arms build-up. Same for north. Your Bishop tells you a fairy tale and a columnist like you falls for it. This means you don’t even read your paper,” the unnamed reader stated in one of his four text messages on the column.

“Did you not read from your paper Professor Akinyemi’s warning? It was splashed in all the major tabloids last Monday. Time to grow up, Lekan. People of goodwill are urging restraint and your Bishop is luring you to complacency,” he added.

I concede to the faceless reader his right of reply to my column. I also understand his concern about an optimistic prophecy in the face of myriads of challenges facing the country which as rightly noted by the reader include the plummeting naira, high unemployment rate, violence and the continued abduction of Chibok girls.

Who would not be worried that the situation in the country has degenerated to a state of hopelessness on many critical issues? The country seems to be faced with a bleak future with the uncertainty of the outcome of the general elections scheduled to hold in February and its aftermath.

Notwithstanding, Bishop Oyedepo and other clerics who have been optimistic about the future of the country this year are entitled to their views which are spiritually inspired. The fact that Professor Akinyemi and some others have either been warning against or predicting post election violence is not enough to dismiss clerics as fairly tale bearers.

We don’t all have to agree with their prophesies but those who want to believe them for whatever reason should be free to do so. The clerics are not unaware of the dire straits we have found ourselves as a country and have at various times been urging political office holders and politicians  at all levels to address the various issues requiring urgent attention.

I am aware that religious leaders across the divide have been campaigning that their members become more politically active by getting registered to vote the right persons for political office.

The political climate of the country may be gloomy like it has been in some past election years, but just as the clerics predicted then, we survived and this year may not be different. The charged political atmosphere in the country is understandable given the stiff opposition by the All Progressives Congress (APC) but it is not enough not to be hopeful about the future of the country.

No matter the outcome of particularly the presidential election of February 14, governance in the country has to change for Nigerians to really get the long expected dividends of democracy and improvement in the standard of living.

If the APC succeeds in sending President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration packing, it will have to prove that it is a better option capable of bringing the expected change. If for whatever reason the PDP manages to retain office at the federal level, it will have to respond to the loud cry for better governance.

  • Oyedepo: The secret of a man

One of the most profound quotations by the President of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, popularly known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, which I have held on to dearly since becoming his disciple in 1994 is that “the secret of a man is in his story.

“If you don’t know the story of a man, you can’t know his secret,” he says once in a while whenever he speaks about the secret of his success in ministry and other endeavours.

“ You need to know how my heart pants after God to know my secret. We do nothing in this ministry except as directed by the Lord.”

Last Wednesday at the midweek service of the Church in Lagos, Bishop Oyedepo reiterated the importance of obedience to divine direction which he emphasised has been responsible for the various accomplishments credited to him.

“I would have missed God’s plan for my life if I had been stubborn to heavenly vision for me. Following God can sometimes appear to be madness in the eyes of the world, but I am happy to be mad to follow God’s plan for my life.

“I am what I am by the grace of God and nothing else. You will see the futility of strength, plans, capacity when you are off God’s plan. It takes natural meekness to walk in God’s plan. I thank God for giving me the grace to obey his commandments at every stage of my life and ministry,” Bishop Oyedepo stated.

I testify that Bishop Oyedepo who turned 60 yesterday is indeed a man of God whose story is that of having abiding faith and trust in the Lord to do exceeding and abundantly beyond human comprehension.

Unlike many others who have been distracted by various factors from fulfilling their vision, Bishop Oyedepo has remained focused on his calling and left no one in doubt about his commitment to fulfilling the mandate he received to “liberate the world from every oppression of the devil.”

Coupled with Bishop Oyedepo’s unwavering faith in God’s vision for his life through practice of various biblical principles is his excellent approach to whatever he does, he doesn’t believe in half measures and, notwithstanding being a preacher, he says prayer can’t replace planning.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, was right when he stated in his congratulatory message that Oyedepo has exceptional ability to organise, motivate and mobilise Christians for God’s service and for the good of mankind.

Not only has his ministry impacted positively on the spiritual and moral lives of members of his church and others globally, his contribution to the improvement of the standard of education in the country is a good example of how churches can contribute to the overall development of the society.

His story of emerging from a humble background and becoming a world class preacher is a confirmation of that verse from the book of Proverbs in the Bible that “seeth thou a man diligent in his business, he will stand before kings and not mean men.”

Happy birthday, Prophet of our generation and servant of the Lord Almighty.

  • Engaging Divine secrets for supernatural breakthroughs! (2)

Engaging Divine secrets for supernatural breakthroughs! (2)

Last week, I showed you what it takes to access divine secrets and how divine secrets apply to favour. This week, I will be showing you channels through which favour flows and benefits of favour.

    Channels through which favour flows:

Every other favour aside salvation, places a demand on us (Titus 2:11).

    • Godliness: It will always engender greatness. All uniquely favoured men in scriptures such as Joseph, Job, and Daniel were lifted through godliness.

For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield (Psalm 5:12).

•The anointing (Psalm 45: 6-12): The anointing of the Holy Ghost attracts the flow of favour. So, the more anointed you are, the greater your access to the flow of divine favour. Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee (Songs of Solomon 1:3).

    • Prayer and Fasting: Nehemiah prayed for God’s favour and the king favoured him beyond imagination (Nehemiah 1:4-12). Esther and Jabez were also beneficiaries of divine favour through the platform of prayer and fasting.

    • Addiction to Kingdom promotion: When you take pleasure in the advancement and promotion of the Kingdom, by favouring God’s agenda in the church, He rewards you with unlimited access to favour (Psalm 102:13-16).

    • Spiritual understanding: Good understanding giveth favour… (Proverbs 13:15). Grace, which equals favour and peace, multiplies by knowledge. So, good understanding entitles you to favour.

    • Giving: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again (Luke 6:38).

    • Keeping Company with the favoured: The company you keep determines what accompanies you. Where you sit, whom you walk with and where you stand determine the outcome of your life (Psalm 1:1-3). He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20).

When you come in contact with the virtues you desire, stay with those that have it. Lot was blessed because he accompanied Abraham the blessed (Genesis 13:5). You cannot be connected to the company of heroes and remain a zero.

    • High Praises: It is a master qualifier for the flow of favour. When you engage in high praises, it touches the heart of God because that is one thing He cannot do for Himself. So, He places extreme value on it (Psalm 67: 5-7).

    Benefits of Favour:

    • It brings promotion (Genesis 39: 5, 21).

    • It triggers breakthroughs: None can fly higher than the favour he enjoys (Psalm 44:1-3).

    • It facilitates miracle marriages (Proverbs 18:22).

    • It engenders miracle children (Luke 1:30; Genesis 29:31).

    • It makes great (1 Corinthians 15:10).

    • It also saves.

In this last quarter of the year, God has vowed to favour you because He always reserves the best for the last. He has vowed to make known His raw power to you, by pulling down every perpetual mountain on your behalf.

You may not have seen anything yet, but by the favour of God this month, you are changing levels supernaturally! So, crave earnestly for divine secrets because they are your sure guarantee, for supernatural greatness forever!

Friend, the power to benefit from the virtues of love is available, if you are born again. You get born again by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. If you are set for this new birth experience, please say this prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus! Now I know I am born again!

I will be concluding this message next week.

Our Ministry is getting set for SHILOH 2013 captioned, which will hold at Faith Tabernacle Canaan Land, Idiroko Road, Ota from December 10-14. Among the highlights of the event are specialized healing services. Come for a destiny turnaround!
