  • Stop blackmailing Emerhor, Adjogbe –Urhobo group warns

The Bayelsa State Government has called on security agencies and other authorities to give more protection for journalists across the country. The government also appealed to journalists in the state to continue to work for the peace, stability  and progress of the state through fair and balanced reportage of activities.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson made the call in a statement to mark the 2019 World Press Freedom Day. He described practicing journalists in the state as critical partners in the development of Bayelsa, especially under the present Restoration Government of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson.  According to him, it is in recognition of their role and importance that the government since inception has supported them to effectively carry out their duties and operate without hindrance.

The Urhobo Nationalist Movement, yesterday warned the people involved in blackmailing Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and Engr. Samuel Adjogbe, the Executive Director Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to desist from it. The group gave the warning in a statement by Alhaji Mumakai-Unagha and Henry Akpoveta, Chairman and Secretary of the group respectively. In the statement  made available to the Nation. the group said it had become obvious that some professional blackmailers were sponsoring some agents to rubbish the hard earned reputation of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and Engr. Samuel Adjogbe.

They said the duo are illustrious Urhobo sons who are patriotic Urhobo to the core and Delta State in general and are committed to see to the opening up of the area.  According to the statement: “We wish to state here that the Urhobo can go to war because of their patriotism so as to defend them. “At this moment, the Urhobos seem to have no direction, we must appreciate one another, queue behind them to move the Urhobo nation forward. “It is regrettable that infighting and pull-down syndrome amongst the Urhobo is not the political solution.

At this moment of our time, we should learn from our past mistakes, take a deep breath on how to redeem the battered image that has brought the Urhobo down.” The group advised the Urhobos to tinker their focus towards what their future should be and how to achieve it, and not to rubbish one another, adding that both O’tega Emerhor and Engr. Samuel Adjogbe are gift to the Urhobo nation from God.  “What the entire Niger Delta region did not achieve since the inception of the Niger Delta Development Commission, the present c ommission has done wonderfully beyond human expectation and imagination.

Two youths, Inyang Patrick, 22, and Ibah Edet, 23, have been arrested by the police in Calabar after allegedly drugging and raping one Miss Umoh Joy, and then blackmailing her with a recording of the incident. Briefing reporters in Calabar, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, the suspects were arrested after being reported to the police by the victim.

He said: “On February 23, 2018 one Miss Umoh Joy alleged that she was invited by one Inyang Akwanyene Patrick ‘m’ 22yrs, to Harris Guest House along Atimbo Road in Calabar. On her arrival to the Guest House, she met Inyang Akwanyene Patrick and Ibah B. Edet ‘m’ 23 yrs, and was offered a bottle of drink suspected to have been drugged, which she took and became unconscious.

Thereafter the duo forcibly had unlawful carnal knowledge with her and videotaped all that transpired which the later used intimidating/demanding ransom from the victim or make it viral to the public if she failed to comply.

  • Stop blackmailing Osun govt, pensioners warn rival group

The Triangular Group of Pensioners in Osun State has decried the alleged sponsored attack on Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his administration by a section of the 2011/2012 pensioners, led by Mr. Omoniyi Ilesanmi, on what it called an unwarranted ploy to distract and impede progress and development.

In a statement by its Chairman, Prince Rotimi Adelugba, the Triangular Group affirmed its position “on the true state of finances” in Osun State and its resolve to champion the plight and welfare of pensioners.

The statement said: “We are not the mouthpiece or spokesperson for the government, but we are in constant touch with the Osun State government on the financial status of the state; hence, we consider it necessary to inform the public.

“As responsible senior citizens, we have been demoralised by the orchestrated media attacks, fabricated and perpetual lies, unguarded utterances and malicious statements by the Ilesanmi group that the Aregbesola administration paid each political office holder, who served between November 2010 and November 2014, N50 million as severance allowance; that the government refused to pay their gratuities but spent the meagre resources of the state on frivolities. These allegations are baseless and unfounded.

“All available evidence shows clearly that the severance allowances given to former commissioners and special advisers (SAs) were in the range of N2.8 million and N4 million, and these were only paid to those who are statutorily and constitutionally entitled to such payments, as gazetted in the State of Osun Public/Political Office Holders and Revised Remuneration Package Law of 2007, which is in consonance with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission Act.

“We are greatly disturbed that the Omoniyi Ilesanmi-led 2011/2012 pensioners have turned themselves into a dirty weapon of destruction in the hands of opposition party and have now resorted to cheap blackmail against the government which has continually displayed high level of responsibility towards the welfare of the citizenry, civil servants and pensioners, despite the paucity of funds which has affected the whole country.

“It is also noteworthy that these supposedly senior citizens had issued a libellous and fraudulent piece where it was alleged that the Aregbesola government diverted the second tranche of the Paris Club Refund to the recently concluded Osun West Senatorial election, even when none of the states of the federation had received such.

“We were vindicated when the second tranche of Paris Club Refund to the State of Osun was eventually released 30 clear days after the Osun West election was concluded. What a contradiction and a show of irresponsibility on the path of the Ilesanmi-led 2011/2012 pensioners!

“We are a non-partisan, non-political group. As elders and senior citizens, our immediate concern is how to join hands with the present administration towards the sustainability and development of our dear state.

“We are happy and satisfied that pensioners were not left out of the first and second tranches of the Paris Club Refund as well as the concessionary loan guaranteed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), popularly called ‘bailout fund’. We want the whole world to know that in the recent disbursement, Osun pensioners were allocated N791 million out of the N6.3 billion received.

“We appeal to the Aregbesola administration to continue to offset the pensions and gratuities of our members as and when due, notwithstanding the cheap blackmail by Ilesanmi and his ilk.

“We have observed also that it is the global trend that the use of fossil fuel to power machines and automobiles is gradually coming to an end as more countries are beginning to switch to renewable and sustainable energy.

“With this, the Nigeria’s economy, which derives its strength majorly from crude oil, will be badly affected and stands the risk of atrophying.  Therefore, we admonish all strata of government to think outside the box to generate income on their own and survive in the fast approaching post-crude oil era.

“We shall continue to agitate for the payment of all our outstanding arrears in mature and civilised ways through constant deliberations and consultations devoid of hatred and blackmail, without constituting public nuisance.

“We also implore all other stakeholders, especially the Ilesanmi-led faction, not to constitute themselves into a distraction and stumbling block to the government.”

  • ‘Stop blackmailing Abia tribunal’

    ‘Stop blackmailing Abia tribunal’

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ben Onyechere, has said allegations that the election petition tribunal in Abia State had been compromised were condemnable.

He said the allegation was a bid to pre-empt the outcome of the judicial process and was bound to fail as it was diversionary.

Onyechere said it was wrong for anyone to cast aspersions on judges in the name of politics.

“The incessant and orchestrated claim by APGA that the tribunal is compromised is not only derogatory of a democratic process, but also indecent and diversionary.

“It is a clear indication that some people are not in politics for the sake of service but for what they can get by assuming that they can blackmail their way through. But unfortunately, such gimmickry is outdated as it is infantile,” Onyechere said.

The former special assistant to former Vice President Alex Ekwueme said the allegation was designed to attract public sympathy but should not be tolerated.

“Their intention is to make it seem as if they are serious contenders and for that reason, they are using blackmail as an instrument to embarrass and coarse the tribunal and lNEC, expecting to attract public sympathy while presuming that the electorate is naive.

“Their do or die attitude is a mockery of participatory democracy and is a primitive tactic, which seeks to prevent justice from taking its course and as such, cannot be tolerated.

“It is utterly condemnable and unacceptable to cast aspersions on the respectable members of the tribunal. It is disruptive and unwarranted to pre-empt the outcome of the cases,” Onyechere added.

  • Stop blackmailing Osun REC, governor’s aide tells Omisore

Stop blackmailing Osun REC, governor’s aide tells Omisore

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State and its candidate in the August 9 governorship poll, Senator Iyiola Omisore, have been urged to stop “blackmailing” the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

In a statement at the weekend, the Director of the Bureau of Communications and Strategy in the Governor’s Office, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said Omisore lost the right to condemn the REC when he failed to approach the tribunal after he was defeated in the 2011 National Assembly election.

Okanlawon said if Omisore had evidence of bias by the REC, he should have approach the election tribunal.

Describing Omisore as an unpopular politician, he said: “It was the 2011 election that exposed the electoral weakness of Omisore, who could only win his polling booth in his ward with just 45 votes.

“He did not only lose the election but lost woefully. One would have expected an arrogant politician like Omisore to challenge that humiliating defeat at the tribunal, so as to show his credibility as a two-term senator, but to the chagrin of all, he could not even go to the tribunal to challenge the election and prove his point of electoral worth. The same man now wants to use cheap blackmail to manipulate the electoral process to his advantage.

“A man that could not challenge an election that thoroughly humiliated him is not fit to comment on the person who conducted the election? He has lost all moral rights to do so. You cannot leave the known legal way of seeking redress and seek redress through the back door.

“The REC’s competence or otherwise can only be determined by the credibility of the election he conducted and this has not been violated or indicted by any means known to law. The only person that went to the tribunal among the PDP contestants was Mr. Wole Oke and he lost.”
