    Ebonyi Gov rewards D’ Tigress player Nwifuru with duplex, N30m

    The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has showered accolades and rewards on Blessing Ejiofor, an Ebonyi-born basketball player who was part of Nigeria’s victorious women’s national team at the 2025 Afrobasket tournament.

    The governor announced a cash reward of ₦30 million and the gift of a duplex at tlan Estate in Abakaliki to the basketballer who hails from Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

    Nwifuru announced the award while receiving Ejiofor at the Government House, Abakaliki on Friday.

    The Governor expressed pride in her achievement, describing her as a great ambassador of Ebonyi State.

    He said her participation in the continental championship was particularly special as it signaled the presence of Ebonyi talents on the global sporting stage.

    “I was a little sad during the last AFCON because Ebonyi’s presence was not there,” the Governor remarked.

    “But I was happy when I heard, while abroad, that Ebonyi was represented in this championship that we won. This is one of my agitations that has come to be.”

    The Governor noted that Ejiofor’s journey to the national team was not an easy one but a testament to determination and divine destiny.

    He commended her for inspiring younger athletes to follow in her footsteps and pledged the state’s continued support for sports development.

    He also approved Ejiofor’s request for improved basketball facilities in the state, directing the release of ₦50 million to the Ministry of Sports for the construction of a standard basketball court for both male and female players.

     “Not only did you represent the nation, but you made your home state proud. We pray that God will give you the strength and all you need to perform even better next time.”, the governor said.

    Blessing Ejiofor was part of the Nigerian side that clinched the Afrobasket title, further cementing the country’s dominance in African women’s basketball.

    Ebonyi State Governor,  Francis Nwifuru, and the member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Kama Nkemkanma, have congratulated Blessing Ejiofor, the Ebonyi-born player in  the victorious D’Tigress that won a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women’s Championship title in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday.

    Governor Nwifuru, in a statement, described Ejiofor, who hails from Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state, as a source of pride to Ebonyi and a shining example of what hard work and dedication can achieve.

    He said her victory serves as inspiration to every girl-child in the state and beyond.

     “You have created another moment of history with your achievement, and we are incredibly proud of you.

    “For every girl-child from Ebonyi, you are an inspiration, showing that hard work and dedication can lead to great accomplishments,” the governor said.

    He also commended Ejiofor’s involvement in girl-child development through the Muna Foundation’s Girls Empowerment Camp, describing her as a beacon of hope and pride for the people of Ebonyi State.

    In a separate message, Kama Nkemkanma praised Ejiofor’s contributions to Nigeria’s basketball success.

    He noted that her performance on the court has once again brought glory to the country and etched the name of Ebonyi State in African sports history.

     “Your journey from local play courts to the prestigious courts of Vanderbilt University, Chipola, West Virginia University, and now D’Tigress is a testament to relentless dedication and the extraordinary talent in our people,” he said.

    He further described Ejiofor as a role model for young people and lauded her for carrying the flag of the constituency, the state and the nation with “grace, strength, and excellence.”
