  • Lab chief warns block moulders

LAGOS State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Acting General Manager Olalekan Ajani  has advised block moulders to be conversant with the standards and procedure of making quality sancrete blocks.

He implored them to join professional associations such as the National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria (NABMON) so that they can be regulated.

Speaking yesterday while inspecting some block moulding firms in the state,  Ajani said the exercise was to ensure quality of building materials, especially sancrete blocks.

Ajani, an engineer, who led a team comprising members of NABMON, to inspect some firms  in Eti-osa/Ibeju-Lekki, described sancrete block as the most important building material because of its load bearing nature.

According to him,  it must be produced with quality components, comprising water, sharp sand, cement and granite dust in the right proportion.

  • Block moulders urged to standardise operations

Block moulders can help in curbing building collapse by co mplying with the standards of their trade, Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Acting General Manager Olalekan Ajani  said yesterday.

At a stakeholders’ meeting with the National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria (NABMN) leadership in Alimosho, Lagos, Ajani described block moulders as critical stakeholders in the construction industry.

He said it was imperative for the agency and the association to strengthen their relationship, identify challenges and be united to ensure safety of lives and property.

Ajani urged members of the association to ensure that their activities as stipulated in the 2015 Building and Civil Engineering (Construction) Materials Law, were regulated by the agency.

He said: “The essence of this stakeholders’ engagement with NABMON is in line with the stance of the government on zero tolerance for building collapse. We identify block as an essential component in buildings, which if not properly and professionally done to standard, can cause a great havoc like building collapse.”

The standard requirements for a block, he said, include the size, strength, dimensions, physical appearance, methodology engaged in the mix ratio, either hand compactor method or mechanical machinery method.

Ajani acknowledged some block makers’ efforts to meet  the established standards and called for more efforts in this regard.

Said he: “So far, the degree of compliance in the mixing, compactness and curing processes by these block makers is encouraging. We as materials testing laboratories need to closely monitor these industries to ensure that the present standard is not only sustained, but also surpassed, while we do recertification where necessary.”

NABMON National President Mr. Rasheed Adebowale criticised building owners who engage quacks to mould blocks for them, saying such practice could not guarantee quality, as basic professional processes would not be followed.

The state Chairman, Mr. Rasheed Aleshinloye, advised the government to intensify its sensitisation through radio and television jingles to enlighten on the dangers of patronising unapproved block moulders.

The Zonal Chairman, Alimosho branch, Mr. Yusuf Adewuyi, identified the challenges of organising block moulders under an umbrella, whereby they could aggregate their veiws.

  • Block moulders pass vote of confidence in Dangote BlocMaster

Block Moulders Association of Nigeria last weekend in Abuja passed a vote of confidence in Dangote’s new cement product, BlocMaster, describing it as the best, in terms of quality to have come from the company since inception.

Chairman of the Block Moulders in Suleja, Niger State, Chief Patrick Markuche, said the new innovative cement from Dangote had improved his revenue as he was able to deliver cement to customers within few days of moulding them.

He said he had personally tested the product, even in the rain and he was happy to highly recommend it to all and sundry. He revealed that members of his association had passed a vote of confidence on Dangote Cement as a company and on BlockMaster as the best cement for block moulding and other building purposes.

“This is the best product from Dangote so far. We have tested it and we are very happy with the result. Even in the rain, this cement is the best for the purpose.”

A major cement distributor, Alhaji Mukhtar Moriki of Albabelo Company, said block makers now demand for more as they are able to deliver to their customers few days after moulding.

Dangote’s National Sales and Distribution Director, Adeyemi Fajobi, said the new cement is the king of cement, and a product of innovation.

“Our customers and key distributors are happy because of the strength and quality of this product. It is also very affordable and it gives them far more yields than all other cements in the market. It is currently the highest grade of cement in Nigeria. It is by far the strongest cement, bagged in the Nigerian market. This cement is 50 per cent stronger after one day and up to 15 per cent stronger after 28 days when the cement finally sets, so that explains the excitement displayed by our retailers and key distributors across the country.”

Noting that there are other brands of cement, even from the company, the Director, Route to the Market, Funmi Sanni, said the BlocMaster quality has been certified as the best by regulatory agencies in the country, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

She said: “It is the king of cement because it is the best quality cement in Nigeria today, based on the laboratory research which shows it is of high quality in terms of value for money.

Enjoining builders and block boulders to patronise the new product, Sanni said the product dries fast after moulding into bricks and also that: “When you mould blocks with BlocMaster and it is raining, you don’t have anything to worry about.”

She explained that the cement can be used to build houses without painting, as it comes out in good dark colour as well as being weather friendly.

Fajobi also said: “BlocMaster is a product of years of research, it is of high quality and it will give users value for money by eliminating loss, it is their response to growing demands by stakeholders, bringing the total products of Dangote Industries Limited to four.”

According to him, the donated items are to enable the block moulders attain the necessary standards in their business, which he said is necessary to ensure safety of buildings as well as curb the menace of sub-standard blocks, which contribute to building collapse.

Olaniyi said contrary to what some quacks are saying, cement block contribute to the safety and strengthen of a building hence the need to take great care in terms of the components used in moulding them.

Specifically, he explained that the wheel barrows are meant to assist the block makers in ensuring that they get the right measurements and correct ratio in terms of cement, granite dust and sand, while the rainboots and hand gloves are for protective purposes.

He advised the block makers to always sieve the sand they use in block making as to remove all embedded debris which could affect the strength of the blocks if retained. He also asked them to use water free from salt and oil contaminants while making blocks.

Highlighting the advantages of Dangote 3X Cement and other brands in the market, Mr. Olaniyi said “The 3x is an acronym for more profit to the moulders, while allowing the builders to build with peace of mind”.

He also informed the block makers of several benefits that they stand to derive from using only Dangote Cement in their businesses, assured the block makers that Dangote Cement is putting in place adequate checks and measures to prevent adulteration of the product.

The elated block moulders were full of praises and appreciation for the items, which they said will enhance productivity and standardization of their products.
