  • EKITI: POLICE AVERT BLOODSHED AS BUHARI, FAYOSE SUPPORTERS CLASH

A timely intervention by the police and other security agencies yesterday prevented what would have been a bloody clash among youths supporting President Muhammadu Buhari and those rooting for Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti State.

The Buhari supporters who are beneficiaries of the Npower scheme had gathered at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for walk to mark one year of the empowerment programme in the state.

Some youths believed to have been mobilised from the Government House stormed the place singing the praises of Fayose and his ‘anointed’ candidate Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola.

As the Npower beneficiaries displayed banners hailing Buhari for empowering them through the scheme, Fayose’s supporters displayed various placards hailing the governor and proclaiming support for Olusola ahead of the governorship poll.

Tension mounted as youths on both sides exchanged words.

The pro-Buhari youths described the action of pro-Fayose youths as “provocative.”

But policemen and other security agents quickly intervened and dispersed the pro-Fayose youths.

They also protected the pro-Buhari youths to the venue of their celebration at AB Hotel, along Olora Road.

The scenario is seen as a dress rehearsal for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti expected to be a fierce battle between the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justifying their action, a pro-Fayose youth, Ajibade Segun, said: “A few months ago, Governor Fayose invited us to the Government House and promised those of us who are NPower beneficiaries in Ekiti that we would get permanent employment from the state government.

“This is why we are happy and we are now coming out to campaign for the Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola. We are here supporting the continuity agenda of his Excellency Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose and supporting Olusola Eleka for governor in July 14.

“To the president we are saying that we don’t want just a temporary relief in the name of Npower from massive unemployment in Nigeria. We want permanent employment.

“We also want the number of beneficiaries of the Npower in Ekiti to be more than what we have presently. But most importantly, we want a permanent job like the governor has promised to give a good number of us,” he said.

A pro-Buhari youth and N Power beneficiary, Adeosun  Peter, said: “N30, 000 for each of the beneficiaries every month is not small money. In twelve months, we know what that money amounts to.

“The beneficiaries of N-power in Ekiti in this first tranche are 3,400, and 8,337 will benefit in the second tranche. Those of us here now are more than 3,000 that have come for accreditation today.

“Buhari is our benefactor. We are standing for Buhari. We are thanking Buhari for what he has done and we also want him to make the job permanent.”

  • Oyo: Police, students in bloody clash

Oyo: Police, students in bloody clash

There was pandemonium at the Moor Plantation, Odo-Ona, Apata area of Ibadan as aggrieved students of the Federal College of Agriculture engaged the police in a bloody clash, leaving two people shot and several others injured.

Many motorists who plied the Ibadan-Abeokuta federal highway were stranded as the protesting students blocked the highway.

The police, who at first were firing teargas at the students to disperse them, resulted into the use of live bullets which injured several innocent people.

Two staff of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) sustained bullet shots, and were currently hospitalised at the University College Hospital (UCH) .

Though no death was recorded in the violent crisis, two people shot by the police were said to be on danger list.

The Oyo state Police Command spokesperson, ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu also confirmed that there was no death during the bloody clash when contacted yesterday.

Two major gates leading into the College have been locked, while an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) belonging to the state police command and two pickup vans were stationed at the main entrance.

About 10 armed policemen were also seen at the gate.

Efforts to speak with embattled Provost of the College was unsuccessful as he was not visible but a source closed to the Provost who would not want his name in print said the issue is beyond the provost as the Federal government had waded into the crisis.

He said, “It has developed to this level. The only thing that I know is that I was told that the students were tired of staying at home. And they are tired of coming to the college doing nothing. Therefore they have to protest”.

The angry students of the Federal College of Agriculture were protesting against what they described as poor administration of the Provost of the College, Dr. Babajide Akanmu Adelegan .

Many of the students who were chanting songs carried placards with various inscriptions such as ” the provost must go” we are tired of staying at home ” this is the fourth year no matriculation” and so on.

Trouble started on Monday when students of Federal College of Agriculture that shared the same premises with IART&T and Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology were protesting within the premises against the leadership of the Provost of the institution, Dr. Adelekan.

The students noted that they were tired of protracted strikes by workers of the institution and various crises that have been rocking the Adelekan’s administration.

A commercial motorcyclist who plied the popular Mokola-Dugbe-Apata Road while speaking with on condition of anonymity informed that students of the institution were protesting peacefully and blocked the Apata-Dugbe Road when the police came to disperse them.

He noted that the melee started when the policemen arrived and started chasing the protesters after the students rejected the police invasion which made the police to re-enforced and chased students, staff of the three institutions and other people on sight.

It was gathered that the two staff of IAR&T including Mrs Helen Adekanmi and another male staff shot during the fracas have are currently receiving treatments at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

An industrial training (IT) student, a male staff,  Mr. Lanre Johnson and ten other staff whose names are still being collated as at the time of filling this report sustained various degrees of injuries on their heads, legs, toes and arms.

Five cars belonging to staff of IAR&T were damaged during the melee that lasted for over two hours.

Items such as broken bottles, stones and stick and burned tyres still litter the scene of the clash.

Worried by the sad development, the Executive Director of IAR&T, Professor James Adediran who quickly cut off his journey to Abuja described the incident as unfortunate.

He noted that it was unfortunate that policemen could not differentiate between staff of the institute and students and staff of the College of Agriculture who were protesting.

Adediran noted that his staff were about to resume for work when the policemen came to invade the premises without spearing anyone.

He said that he had to quickly return from his journey to Abuja when staff of the institution called him about the situation on ground.

Adediran said “This morning, our staff came to their places of work and unfortunately the gates were locked, they had to look for ways to enter into the premises, and unfortunately we lean that students were on rampage shouting and demonstrating on the main road, so it was difficult to enter.

“And personally, I was not around, I was on my way to Abuja and I had to return back after Ilesa, I was already traveling, I had to return on my way. When I came back I was told that the police enter the premises and started shooting and to be sincere I want to say that two of our staff were shot, they were being attacked.

“What really happened is that there were stray bullets, the two of them, one on the head and the other one in the abdomen. The two of them are still in the hospital. They were rushed to the hospital and now receiving treatments.

“I was told that they are recovering well and will be visiting the hospital to know the state of their health status.

“This is IAR&T, there are three institutions in these premises, Federal College of Agriculture, Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology and the IAR&T.

  • Police probe Wike, Amaechi bloody clash

Police probe Wike, Amaechi bloody clash

Police Chief Ibrahim Idris has ordered a probe into the  Saturday clash between security detail of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and those of Minister of Transportation Chibuile Amaechi in Port Harcourt.

Although nobody died during the clash, many were injured and the rifle of a policeman was snatched at the Trans-Amadi Layout.

Both Wike and Amaechi, who are former allies, claim thay escaped assassination.

Rivers Police Command spokesman Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed that a probe had been launched into the incident and the involvement of policemen.  He did not give details.

The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Promise Wosu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), and other security personnel who were involved in the bloody clash.

In a statement by its Chairman Chief Davies Ikanya, made available by his media adviser Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the APC said: “Reports made available to us by Prince Tonye Princewill, an associate to Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who was in the same car with the Minister of Transportation, indicated that Wike’s dispatch rider pulled a pistol to assassinate Amaechi, but missed his target, after which Amaechi’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Mr. Seimeikumo Debewari, intervened to save the minister from further assassination attempt.

“Prince Princewill stated that he was at a loss if the attack was not an assassination attempt on the Transportation Minister, somebody should explain to him in a clearer sentence why Wike’s despatch rider failed to stop the two security vehicles of the minister, which had already crossed, but decided for whatever reasons, to block the vehicle in which the minister was driving.

“Prince Princewill also asked why the attempt by Amaechi, who was driving the car, to navigate his vehicle out of danger was prevented by two security men from Rivers governor’s convoy, who pulled their pistols to shoot him, but when Wike’s security men realised that the vehicle that the minister was driving was bullet-proofed, they resorted to hitting the jeep with the butts of their guns and in the process broke the right driving mirror and attempted to break Amaechi’s windscreen.

“After the failed attempt to kill the Transportation Minister, his escort team was physically assaulted by Wike’s CSO and Rivers governor, with the operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) on the minister’s convoy dislodged and forcibly dispossessed of one of their AK-47 rifles.”

Rivers APC also stated that the dangerous trend, if not nipped in the bud, might jeopardise the peace pervading the Niger Delta.

It reiterated that Wike’s main desire was to truncate Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy, after the failed plot by the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win the 2015 presidential election, stressing that the Rivers governor’s disdain for President Muhammadu Buhari, APC and Amaechi was legendary.

The opposition party said: “Wike recently exhibited hatred for Buhari’s administration during his misguided lecture at Chatham House, London, where he disparaged the Federal Government, demarketed and rubbished all the efforts of the APC-led Federal Government to right most of the wrongs of the past PDP government in a foreign land.

“Wike should not be allowed to turn Rivers State into a theatre of unwarranted war, only obtainable during the Sir Celestine Omehia’s era, when Port Harcourt was rated as the riskiest place in the world.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications Emma Okah described as wishful thinking, the call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Governor Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO). Promise Wosu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), and other security personnel.

Okah, said: “The call for the arrest and prosecution of Wike’s CSO lacks merit, it is mere wishful thinking and it should be disregarded.

“If APC chairman is calling for arrest and prosecution of Wike’s CSO, what do we do to the policemen that attacked the Rivers governor’s escort rider? Do we also call for their arrest and prosecution?”

Okah also stated that there should be no double standard in order to ensure justice.

Mile 12 clash: Resident pleads adequate security to bury dead

A resident of Agiliti Street in Mile 12, near Lagos, Mr Danjuma Jubril, on Friday pleaded with the police authorities to provide adequate security for the burial of people killed in the bloody clash in the area on Thursday.

Jubril told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the tense security in the area was not conducive for proper interment of the dead.

”Some of the corpses are inside Agiliti River. We cannot bury or retrieve the bodies in the river because of the security situation.

”The burial ground we use is at Agiliti. We have sent message to the DPO in charge of this area that we need police escort to bury them.”

Jubril, who said he was born at Mile 12 more than 30 years ago, blamed the deadly clash on hoodlums extorting money from commercial motorcyclists and trucks carrying food items.

He advised that armed security men should be stationed permanently in the area in view of the incessant clashes.

”Security agents did not respond quickly when we called them. If they had responded immediately, the crisis would have been contained in time,” Jubril said.

NAN reports that a detachment of armed policemen, soldiers and civil defence corps had been patrolling the areas, where ethnic Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani people engaged in hand-to-hand clashes resulting to many deaths.

“Yes there was crisis in Wukari, but it is under control now. Security men have been deployed and peace restored.

He said Police Commissioner Shaba Alkali had moved to the area to ensure peace.

A  former Vice Chairman of Wukari Local Government Council, Alhaji Tanimu Danlele, told NAN that eight people died and more than 30 others were injured.

He thanked security agents for ensuring quick return of normalcy to the area and urged them to be vigilant to forestall a reccurrence
