First away win: More to come, Giwa boasts

Giwa FC chairman, Ambassador Chris Giwa has described his side’s first Glo Premier League away win as a sign of good things to come.

The Jos-based side, which is playing top flight action for the first time, defeated another newly promoted side Taraba FC 1-0 in Jalingo on Sunday.

It was Charles Okoro’s 45th minute goal that secured the historic three points for the coachless side, his second goal in two matches.

Only last week, Okoro’s goal helped Giwa FC who are playing without their former coach, Abdullahi Biffo secure a vital away point when they played a 1-1 draw against their hosts, Dolphins in Port Harcourt.

An elated Giwa told SportingLife that his boys have found their rhythm and would be a force to be reckoned with in the league.

“I am proud of the boys today. They are good ambassador of the state. As I told you things are getting in shape in the team now. We’ve discovered the problem of the club and we have tried everything within our reach to find a lasting solution to it,” Giwa told SportingLife.

“The win is a morale booster to the team. Four points in two away matches is something to be cherished. We will continue to do our best in the league to get good results and make our fans happy. Our intention for the league is very clear. We are not in the league to count numbers but to be a force to be reckoned with. We will not allow the victory to get into our head.”

Moses boasts: Chelsea in Kazan to win

Super Eagles and Chelsea forward, Victor Moses is confident the Stamford Bridge outfit will have another great time in today’s Europa League quarter-final reverse fixture against Russia’s Rubin Kazan at Luzhniki Stadium.

The Nigeria international played an integral role in last week’s 3-1 Europa League quarter-final first leg victory against the Russians and has urged his Blues team-mates to put the tie to bed with an early goal in tonight’s decisive second leg in Moscow.

“We’re here to try to win the game tomorrow night (today), they have good strikers and they will be in our faces from the start of the game,” said Moses.

“We just need to get our noses in front and try to win the game. It won’t be an easy task but we’re looking forward to it and if we can score an early goal that will be great for us,” Moses told Chelsea official website.

Rubin Kazan may feel they were slightly fortunate to leave London a week ago with only a 3-1 deficit after the Blues dominated the game for long spells.

Moses, however, saw enough from Kerban Berdyev’s side to suggest there is plenty of life left in the tie.

“I don’t know a lot about Russian football but I know it’s a great league here,” he explained.

“They’ve played against Barcelona and beaten them [in 2009]. They have a good manager and they have quality players who can win them the game. The most important thing for us now is to concentrate and try to do our best tomorrow night.”

Interestingly, the Nigerian-import has made a promising start to his Chelsea career, scoring seven goals in 34 appearances, adding European football to his CV and tasting success on the international stage with Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations back in January.

The big matches keep on coming, with today’s game preceding an FA Cup semi-final date with Manchester City at the weekend, but the 22-year-old is eager not to look too far ahead.

“I’m a new player and want to do the best I can, work hard week in, week out and try to play as many games as I can,” he added.

“We’re focused on the game, it’s a massive one for us, and we want to put the City game to the back of our minds as it’s not until Sunday.”
