    Singing:

Birds are creatures that sing all day long.  Knowing how tough the world is and how burdened we humans often become, I pondered on this singing attitude of birds.  Any time of day, it seems, they have no problem in airing their song.  I discovered there is no magic to it.  They just don’t have all the problems that other creatures have.  The creatures on the ground and in the seas are ever nervous that something is about to eat them up.  But birds, they are relatively safe up there in those branches and the audacious ones also perch on the top of the houses we built for ourselves.  Why won’t they sing? How many enemies and problems meet them up there?  Far fewer than those down below.  The moral of the story is that if we want to enjoy relaxation and be happy enough to sing, we have to rise above our problems and enemies and bad situations every now and then.  We need abirdietype of attitude.

When did you last sing or hum? That is an interesting question. Maybe  most of us now have earphones and listen to music instead, with the various gadgets that never leave our hands.  Yes indeed, music and singing are effective in dissolving stress.

Just watch Dame Patience dance these days towards the Nigerian elections.   You would have thought  that with all the stress of the months-long campaign train she would be flat out.  The ancient General too seems to have the energy of youths.  The whole thing looks so fun that I wouldn’t mind being a politician (a nice one, hopefully) but I prefer watching them on TV.  It seems that song supersedes stress.   Any event that involves singing and dancing, no matter the opposition, sufferings, difficulties, uncertainties, losses, pains, etc ., always looks fun, and perhaps  is actually very fun.

Where did black music in the USA come from?  Soul, blues, and gospel apparently have roots in slavery and suffering.  In those days, song was the ready and perhaps only remedy.

It is helpful to sing and dance every now and then but this needs to come from inside of you to be effective in helping you relax.  Some therapists teach autogenic relaxation.  That is a sense or attitude or feeling of relaxation that comes from inside you;  that you draw from inside you.  It could be from your faith or principles or culture or vision of your future, etc.  You see that some people who feel cool and protected are always singing something.  Don’t mind those churchgoers. The various religions of this world involve music in their activities.  Music has a positive effect on our being and is a positive expression of our being and it can drown negativities. You should have some favorite songs, pop songs, hymns, folk songs that lighten you up.  You should have some principles that help you ride over problems and stay above negativities.

Nigerians, perhaps, are actually quite good at being relaxed and happy compared to people from many parts of the world. This kind of happiness beats lack of electricity or lack of other essentials of modern life and productivity.  The thing is, they are simply autogenic in relaxing.  In spite of all the doom and catastrophes predicted for the highly contested election at hand, you can be sure that we will see most Nigerians display their typical autogenic relaxation of mind and body and go on living.

Our homes are very important for our after-hours relaxation.  Many of us may not take interest in home making but it is essential for our well-being.  If you have spent the whole day stressing at work, physically and mentally, you should be able to come home to sing.  It does not mean being rich and having a fancy home.  It just means that you have made the place your “treetop” (the place where you can feel like singing) and only you know how best to do that with whatever means or resources you have. In fact, as time goes on and you keep improving it in whatever way you can, you will find that anytime you come home, you automatically feel relaxed and able to “sing” (be above your problems and  the things the world did to you).

Those who have young children should avail themselves of the opportunity to sing as kids naturally love singing and are very capable of singing.  You see, they have not been there, done that, and seen things that adults have. We adults have lost a lot of our song.  We can hypothesize that the greater the singing the less the problems or stress is inversely proportional to song or song and stress don’t mix because one consumes the other.  We may not even need to prove these hypotheses.  Just look at birds and kids.  What do they have in common?  Fewer problems and more songs. If you don’t believe me, try and philosophy a little.  Why do humans have an ability to sing? It is surely not for nothing.    Music has various physiological and psychological effects which we shall examine next.

    Exercises: Yawning

The first exercise we look at is yawning.  Yawning ina natural phenomenon involving a neuronal reflex, physical exercise of the respiratory tract, forced changes in the brain and body circulations of oxygen and heat, and expulsion of gaseous waste.Pandiculation is the act of yawning and stretching simultaneously (you must have seen your cat doing it. Try it yourself; it is quite enjoyable).

Yawning has been viewed in good and evil terms in various cultures and religions which sometimes render realities fabulously.  Recently we reviewed yawns through technology and science.  A video circulating online shows a 30 weeks old fetus in the womb yawning several times.  I viewed it from the BBC website:  http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140811-warning-this-may-make-you-yawn.  Knowing that fetal lungs do not breathe air (in fact they are full of fluid as I have seen in real experiments on lambs while doing neonatal research in California, USA) this fetal yawning is phenomenal. The human fetus, as seen in the video, may be spontaneously exercising and building up life-sustaining reflexes even before it is born.In the biblical story we read: “…as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy” said Elizabeth when Mary arrived to visit her.  Yes indeed, we know babes do things in the womb but yawning?

To see a fetus yawning is so beautiful that I can never think of a yawn in evil terms again. It is a natural reflex and is positive to life, and perhaps should not be suppressed when it comes.  From now on I view it as a useful physical exercise when one is tired.

So far, the yawn has been a mystery.  It is a universal reflex.  Humans of all ages yawn and animals too yawn. Various religions (especially Christianity and Islam) frown at yawning when they connect it with laziness (especially from overeating or gluttony).  For example, it is reported (http://islamqa.info/en/755) that the Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Yawning is from the Shaytaan (Satan). If any of you feels the urge to yawn, let him resist it as much as possible, for if any of you says ‘Ha’ (makes a noise when yawning), the Shaytaan laughs.” (al-Bukhari no. 3289).  It is also believed that:“When one of you yawns during prayer, then let him place his hands over his mouth, for verily, the Shaitaan enters with a yawn.”Yawning is contagious and yawning during collective prayer certainly can change the prayerful atmosphere and can spread disease (evil enters in), therefore, according to the level of awareness of the ancients and the freedom of divine ways of salvation, this instruction is understandable.

Science and technology however make us realize that yawning is part of our nature and certainly, a good part.It is commonly associated with tiredness, stress, sleepiness, or even boredom and hunger, though studies show it may be linked to the cooling of the brain (Wikipedia).

Seeing a person yawning or talking to someone on the phone who is yawningare viewed as positive feedback.  You yawn in turn.  It is believed to have a synchronization effect in animal social life.  Try and see if your dog yawns after it sees you yawn or you yawn after you see your dog yawn.

Some posit that “yawning might be a herd instinct…the yawn serves to synchronize mood in gregarious animals, similar to the howling of the wolf pack. It signals tiredness to other members of the group in order to synchronize sleeping patterns and periods” (Wikipedia). If the kids are acting like they do not want to go to bed, start yawning in front of them. Yawn for granny too if you want to be left alone in the sitting room with your spouse.

For your own benefit, when you’ve been at some work for long hours, allow yourself to yawn.  It is the body’s signal of tiredness and coupled with that signal, your body is forced to inhale and exhale and do a quick servicing to counteract stress.  If you are alone, and you have to keep on at that work, try some pandiculation  yawn and stretch.  It gives you a mini restoration each time you do it.

  • Methods of bodily relaxation: Laughter

    Methods of bodily relaxation: Laughter

How often do you laugh? When did you last laugh?  Why did you laugh?  How did you laugh?  You must be funny!

“Laughter is the best medicine” for a tensed environment.  Humor is infectious. “When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress… Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict….. With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health.” says HelpGuide.org (http://www.helpguide.org/articles/emotional-health/laughter-is-the-best-medicine.htm). The website explains the effects of laughter, some of which you might recognize as your own experiential knowledge. The major effects of laughter on our bodies are as follows.

“Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.

Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.

Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

             Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.”

Stress being a psycho-physical or psychosomatic (mind-body) condition, laughter is one of the best ways to relieve stress because it has beneficial effects on both mind and body.

HelpGuide.org gives mental health benefits of laughter as:

Adds joy and zest to life

    Eases anxiety and fear

    Relieves stress

    Improves mood

    Enhances resilience

    Social benefits are included:

    Strengthens relationships

    Attracts others to us

    Enhances teamwork

    Helps defuse conflict

    Promotes group bonding

The link between laughter and mental health are also described as:

“Laughter dissolves distressing emotions. You can’t feel anxious, angry, or sad when you’re laughing.

Laughter helps you relax and recharge. It reduces stress and increases energy, enabling you to stay focused and accomplish more.

Humor shifts perspective, allowing you to see situations in a more realistic, less threatening light. A humorous perspective creates psychological distance, which can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Using humor and laughter in relationships allows you to:

Be more spontaneous. Humor gets you out of your head and away from your troubles.

Let go of defensiveness. Laughter helps you forget judgments, criticisms, and doubts.

Release inhibitions. Your fear of holding back and holding on are set aside.

Express your true feelings. Deeply felt emotions are allowed to rise to the surface.”

Therefore, when you relax at home, take off some stress with laughter.  The relationship between parents and kids is genetic, physical, mental, and spiritual.  It is a symbiotic complex. Parents stress themselves to put food on the table but kids are delightful and a source of laughter. Parents’ spending time with their kids is not only good for the kids but is also good for the parents.  Other sources of laughter are television, publications, pets, friends, and fun activities.Laugh, show someone your teeth every day of your life.

Know what is not for laughter. The ancient Book of Sirach says: “Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts and humbles” (Sirach 7:11).  Discern a good joke from a bad one.  Do not diminish or hurt other people with your “fun”.

    Methods of bodily relaxation

Good evening. You have just arrived home. You have spent 8 hours working hard, branched at the stores for some groceries, and spent another hour in the traffic. After you shut the door, you strip without thinking. Off go the tie and belt. Off go the shoes. Throw away the wig. Drop the watch on the table. Instinctively, you are freeing yourself. There is no place like home. There you can relax and not be judged. At home, we should be able to breathe, recline, laugh, enjoy family and friendship, exercise, listen to music or entertainment, watch TV, play table games, do a hobby, pray, etc. Home is very important for our wellbeing.  In fact, many people do not care about the stress or negativities of work life because they always look forward to home in the evenings. Of course, there are always house chores to be done but the fact of being at home is a mental comfort. We consider some of the relaxation techniques and means that we have.

    Breathe

Deep breathing can be practice anywhere: at home, at work, during a trip, etc.  Breathe as deeply as you can, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Repeat it several times.  Inhale as much air as you can when you breathe in and push out as much air as you can when you breathe out.  The deeper you breathein, the more oxygen you inhale. The more completely you breathe out, the better you get rid of waste products in exhaled air.  You can also lie on your back to do deep breathing.  Keep your legs uncrossed and arms relaxed at your sides. Your abdomen should rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale.

    Recline

Some people have back ache at the end of the day.  Others have no pain but want to rest their backs. Recliners take the weight off the back, rest the spine, and give some comfort. Elevating the legs on an ottoman while reclining helps to support the back. Apart from relaxation, it can help in medical conditions such as varicose veins.

Ergonomics is the science of adapting work environments to people’s safety, comfort and efficiency. NASA astronaut posture studies have helped to develop various recliners.  For example, the Ergo-Lounger offers several range-of-motion positions and supports for the head, neck, and back.  It relieves pressure on nerves and backs and accommodates face-up or face-down positions(see ErgoLounger.com).

The more common recliners in homes are reclining sofas and reclining chairs, some of them having the capacity for multiple reclining angles.  There are different kinds of these recliners, some having rocking, gliding, or massage capacity. Many have lumbar support. Many doctors recommend recliners for muscle strain and pregnancy related back pain so that the back is reclined and legs are elevated.Massage recliners were designed for back pain, depending on the nature or cause of the back pain. They may relieve pain of muscle tightness or spasms. However, back injuries require a simple back support and your doctor’s attention.

52 Familyhealth 28-2-2015.An invigorating massage chair uses heat and mild vibrating massage to soothe muscles and aching bones. Zero-Gravity Recliners have multiple adjustments that place the body in a position similar to NASA’s weightlessness. The Human Touch massage chair is a Zero-Gravity chair that massages the neck, back and legs while delivering heat to the lumbar region. The Eco Backrest lounge chair is adjustable to six range-of-motion positions and is a spine-neutral lounge chair that mimics the effects of weightlessness. It has a TiltSeatthat transforms it to a work station. It is designed to accommodate personal preference or comfort for working or resting face-up or face-down.

Do not recline endlessly because this can have adverse effects such as lack of exercise of mind, body,or spirit and TV overdose.
