Boko Haram: 38 killed in Chad

Thirty-eight people, including five attackers, were killed and another 51 wounded yesterday in multiple suicide bombings that targeted a market and refugee camp in Chad.

The attacks took place in Baga Sola village near the Nigerian border, with the terror sect Boko Haram suspected as the brain behind the insurgency.

The head of the gendarmerie in the capital N’djamena said two groups of suicide bombers attacked the market and refugee camp.

Gen. Banyaman Cossingar, director general of the gendarmerie, said a group of women blew themselves at the market, killing at least 16 people while a second group of suicide bombers went to the refugee camp, killing at least 22 people.

Col. Azem Agouna Bermandoua, spokesman for the military, said there was a triple bombing in the village. He said they suspected Boko Haram.

Niger, Cameroon and Chad have all suffered a spillover of violence from Boko Haram’s north Nigerian strongholds.

Chad spearheaded a regional offensive earlier this year that drove the Islamist fighters from many of their bases. However, the group has fought back, launching a wave of cross-border attacks and suicide bombings.

“We heard three explosions. The market is on fire right now,” said one of the security sources.

Niger, Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon and Chad have agreed to establish an 8,700-strong multinational force to take on the militants, though its formation has been delayed.

Chadian President Idriss Deby has said the force could begin operations later this month.

  • Suicide bombers kill one soldier in Maiduguri

Two male suicide bombers suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect on Tuesday night detonated their explosives, killing one soldier and themselves at a military check-point in Maiduguri.

The attack came less than 12 hours after two teenagers carried out a similar attack in neighbouring Damaturu, Yobe State that killed six people.

The explosion, according to an eyewitness, occurred at about 10.22pm on Tuesday night after the curfew imposed on the city had elapsed.

The Nation gathered that the suicide bombers were riding on a tricycle and were asked to stop by security men.

Borno State Police Spokesman, Victor Isuku, confirmed the incident in a text message to our correspondent.

16 Niger villagers killed in Boko Haram attack

Boko Haram terrorists have killed 16 civilians in an attack on a southeast Niger village, near the Nigerian border, a local official said yesterday.

“On July 15, Boko Haram elements fired on locals who were praying in a village near the town of Bosso,” said Bako Mamadou, mayor of Bosso.

“They killed 15 people on the spot and another person succumbed later to their wounds,” Mamadou said on state television.

According to the Bosso mayor, four others were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile the Niger army said yesterday it had killed 32 Boko Haram fighters from July 15-17 during “sweeping up” operations following the July 15 attack by “Boko Haram elements”.

The defence ministry added that three terrorists were taken into custody, adding that Chadian soldiers also took part in the operation.

Nigeria and Niger, along with Chad and Cameroon, have launched a joint offensive to end Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency, which has claimed at least 15,000 lives and caused about 1.5 million people to flee their homes.
