  • Makarfi’s PDP under fire over comment on released Chibok girls

Makarfi’s PDP under fire over comment on released Chibok girls

Following a statement credited to Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s led faction of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) condemning the negotiation and the prisoner swap that resulted in the release of 82 of the girls abducted from a girls secondary school in Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists, a group under the auspices of League of Upcoming Political Parties has described the statement as shocking from a ‘confused group’.

The league in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Dr. Musa Ahmadu and make available to media in Kaduna Monday added that, is more shocking that the statement was coming from the faction led by man who has been the executive governor and chief security officer of a state for eight years and who is widely acclaimed to have brought relative peace to his state of Kaduna during his tenure.

The statement read in part, “the comment of the PDP at a time when the whole world was congratulating the federal government for leading the initiative that saved the lives of 82 innocent young girls, brought joy to their homes and rekindled the hope of the citizenry that it is now blessed with an effective government which can go all lengths to secure the lives of its citizens.

“The statement by a faction of a fractured party can only be excused on the basis that the stress of its prolonged engagement to claim authenticity of the party has begun to affect the psyche of its leadership and raises the question whether the statement is not a subtle extension of the cold war between the Makarfi faction and Ali Modu Sheriff.

“We advice Makarfi not to allow his frustration with Modu Sheriff rob him on his integrity and wisdom for he is one of the most respected among the tribe of former governors in Nigeria. Issuing this kinds of statements that panders to kindergarten logic would definitely harm his head earned reputation.

“The Makarfi faction said the negotiations that led to the release of the 82 girls violate international best practices  of not negotiating with terrorists, but the faction tends to forget that even US which is the lead figure in the fight against terrorism has never closed the path towards negotiation when it’s interest is at stake and has many times  entered into negotiations with terrorists groups and exchanged prisoners with the underlying aim of securing the lives of hostages first before any other thing”.

The statement continued, ‎”the Makarfi faction seems to have forgotten  that at the end of every strategy or engagement, it is the result that matters  and that best practices are not statutes but strategies hence cannot be violated but replaced when the matter demands a different approach.

“The faction also claimed the release of the girls through this process will exert pressure on the parents of the remaining girls yet to be released. They claim the parents of the remaining girls would begin to wonder why their own children were not among the lucky ones released.

“The recent release of the 82 girls, the largest number so far, rather than sadden the parents of those that are yet to return, has followed a similar pattern by reigniting the hope of the parents of those yet to see their children that it remains a matter of time for them to be equally lucky and has erased the despondency created by the PDP government which kept making statements about its helplessness on the situation and inflicting psychological torture on the parents.

“The current release of the 82 girls needs to be stressed has not only restored hope in the whole of Chibok, Borno State and Nigeria but globally, that not only are these girls alive and well but with the application of  efficient strategies like the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has done, the remaining girls would be found and rescued.

“We wonder where Makarfi ‎ and his cohorts have been all this while when the current administration has recorded success in the fight against the insurgents by clearing the dreaded Sambisa Forest which became a no go area in the PDP era, secured the release of kidnapped victims, preventing the terrorists from holding any territory under the federal republic of Nigeria and degrading the terrorists to a stage where they can only attack soft targets.

“But it must be made clear to Makarfi and his co-travellers  that the current administration places high premium on the sanctity of human lives and respect for human rights which has been the hallmark of the current military in all its operations”, the statement added.

  • Four soldiers killed in Boko Haram operation

Four soldiers killed in Boko Haram operation

Men attached to Operation Lafiya Dole were on the trail of a band of terrorists in Doho, Mina, Maideni, Donari, Salari and Lawari villages in the northern part of the state when the incident happened late Wednesday.

The extremists, according to the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman had attempted to infiltrate Magumeri village.

They were however repelled by soldiers who gave them a chase.

He said that after a hot pursuit and mop up, the troops were able to neutralize an unconfirmed number of Boko Haram terrorists.

They also recovered one gun truck, two anti-aircraft guns, two  extra barrels,   two  rocket propelled grenade bombs, 31 pieces of Nitrogen 57mm bombs, one roll of Nitrogen cable and a  60mm mortar bomb.

Others are:  assorted General Purpose Machine Gun and anti-aircraft ammunition and their links, three spare vehicle tyres with rims, one vulcanizing machine, one Qlink motorcycle, foodstuff and three Boko Haram terrorist sown camouflage.

Besides, troops of the 22 Brigade of the army have   cleared Boko Haram terrorists out of Gujari village, Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. This followed information about the convergence of the extremists in the area preparatory to launching attacks on nearby communities.

The army spokesman said that during the operation, the troops killed two Boko Haram terrorists while an unspecified number escaped with gunshot wounds into the forest.

At the location, the troops discovered and destroyed a tailoring shed and  recovered one  Rocket Propelled Grenade Bomb, three  Dane guns, one  double  barrel pump action guns, two  bandoliers, 23 empty cases of Shilka gun ammunition, two  initiation water container and one motorcycle battery among other items.

Similarly, soldiers fighting Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State arrested a deaf and dumb suspected member of the terror sect.

Recovered from the man were eight functional mobile handsets, a bunch of keys, two passport photographs, two amulet charms and a transistor radio.

But the suspect’s name could not be immediately ascertained because of his disability.

Usman  said, no fewer than  nine members of the sect willingly surrendered to soldiers of  Operation Lafiya Dole deployed along Dikwa-Gulumba Gana road in northern Borno after claiming to get tired of life under Boko Haram.

The former terrorists who came from Tambashe Village in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno state are currently been held and interrogated by the army to determine the veracity of their claim.

Usman said the armed forces are continuing with clearance operations in  suspected Boko Haram  locations through patrols, ambushes and raids with appreciable progress.

Such raids, he said, led to the arrest of   one Mallam Makinta Ibrahim , 45, at Bayemari, by troops of the 159 Task Force Battalion.

The suspect who hailed from Yaro Grematalti Yunusari Local Government Area is believed to be a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) dealer to the terrorists.

  • We won’t relax vigilance against Boko Haram, says Osinbajo

We won’t relax vigilance against Boko Haram, says Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday said that the Nigerian security agencies will keep up vigilance against Boko Haram terrorists.

Noting that the terrorists have been degraded, he said that they still carry out suicide bomb attacks against soft targets.

Fielding questions from journalists after receiving briefings from Service Chiefs, Osinbajo said “‎As you know the Boko Haram as a military force has been degraded, they are not holding territory at the moment; our armed forces have been able to dislodge them from practically all territories they were holding in the past.

“What is happening now is just once in a while attacks by suicide bombers. By the nature of asymmetric warfare we are not able to say it has ended now. But I think that militarily they have been contained, there is no question at all that Boko Haram as a fighting force has been degraded.

“We are still vigilant because of their capacity to do damage with suicide bombers. I am very satisfied with what the military has done so far.‎ And the briefing has shown graphically that they are really on top of their game and that they are doing excellently well in the north east.” he added

He explained that the fact that he received the security briefing did not mean that President Muhammadu Buhari will not return soon.

According to him, the security briefings are routine.

He said; “No no no! Almost every month these briefings are held, it is routine and it is the president who puts in place this whole idea of regular briefing. It is even more important that we do so because of some of the issues arising like the cases of kidnappings and I wanted the IG to inform us fully.

“Besides, the President is a process person and certainly I am going to speak with him here on developments here. So it is not an indication of anything. It is only an indication that we are committed ‎to the security of the nation.  The primary duty of government is to ensure lives and properties and that is why we have to be regularly briefed.

“‎The good thing is that our men are going extraordinarily well in the north east and that Southern Kaduna has also been contained. The peace building process is also going on very well.” he added

Minister of Defence said “We have trashed most of the security issues that concerns the country at the meeting including the Southern Kaduna and the North East and other parts of the country.

On whether Nigeria is now safe, he said “Nigeria is very safe and I believe with the concept of the security agencies, all the security challenges have been surmounted.”

  • Boko Haram: Spare no one including my children, Shettima charges military

Boko Haram: Spare no one including my children, Shettima charges military

Worried by the renewed suicide attacks across the State by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima has called on the military and other security agencies to go after anyone factually discovered to be supporting Boko Haram including any of his
    children.

Kashim Shettima who spoke in a state wide broadcast on Friday morning emphatically disclosed that those who associate with Boko Haram are enemies of humanity and the state in particular, while calling on the good people of the state to support security agencies to ensuring that the insurgents are defeated head-on, while stressing that majority of Borno people are good people working against the insurgents.

“I know that majority of you, the good people of Borno State; have remained sincerely committed to fighting this insurgency. I have met parents who exposed their insurgent biological children and handed them over to security forces to face justice. I know that insurgents
and their allies, often hide their identity so well that good citizens may innocently associate with them.

“But the bold patriotism of parents who turn in their children has always strengthened our resolve. This is why I strongly say to security agencies, that anyone factually suspected of despicable links with the Boko Haram and other criminals should face justice even if that person happens to be one of my three biological children. Support for insurgents is a crime against humanity. I have met parents who encouraged their children to join the Civilian JTF and risk their lives to fight insurgents.

“I have even met parents who remained contended and proud even after their sons died fighting under the Civilian JTF. I have seen elderly men and young girls organize themselves to join the fight as vigilantes and the Civilian JTF, “Shettima said.

Shettima who is particularly disturbed over suicide bombings in the last couple of days across the state noted that, the recent resort to cowardly suicide attacks on soft civilian targets as signs of defeats and weakness that the insurgents are exhibiting to prove to their fellow terrorists across the world that they are still not defeated.

“‎In recent days and weeks, we have come under renewed attacks which horribly remind us, that our security challenges are still longing. It is regrettable that this upsurge in cowardly suicide attacks came not long after the patriotic military forces of this country recaptured
Sambisa Forest which used to be the operational zone of the Boko Haram terrorists. It was from Sambisa that these mass murderers used to train, prepare and launch bold attacks on our communities.

“Our gallant military and other security agencies have now denied them the use of their former high command. However, we must remind ourselves that the recapture of Sambisa Forest and the flushing out of the terrorists from most of their former enclaves does not mean that
    our struggle is over.

“Instead, the terrorists have resorted in their usual cowardly fashion, to stepping up attacks on soft targets.  Cowardly and vile attacks such as these on schools, places of worship, markets and other soft targets are signs of the terrorists’ weakness and of their desperation to tell their terror co-travelers around the world, that they are not yet finished. In this criminal endeavour, they resort to the use of teenagers and children as young as seven years. More recently, they even strap babies on the back of their recruits in order to slip through our security dragnets.

“They also use hard drugs on these innocent children who do not know what they are doing when they kill their own parents, relations, and fellow countrymen and women.  Many precious lives have been lost, hundreds of citizens including school girls were abducted; many more
people have suffered serious injuries as a result of these senseless acts of bloodthirsty enemies of peace, he said.

He called on the people of the state to take the security of the state in their hands by stepping up surveillance in their neighborhood and continue to remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious person to security agencies.

‎”Even though we are all saddened by episodes of attacks, as your Governor, I assure you that I serve with a constant reminder that the number one basis of Government is the protection of innocent lives and property.

“I know the weight of my duties and the oath I took before you and God. With your mandate, I have the privilege of first hand security reports and I can share with you, that for every vile attack that the terrorists were able to carry out on innocent lives, many more were stopped by our gallant security agencies, our Civilian JTF, vigilantes and hunters.

“As we know, the intention of terrorists is to demoralise us, make us to live in fear and prevent us from going about our normal lives and worshipping our God in ways that differ from their ungodly violence. We will not allow them succeed in their wish to make us live
in the permanent slavery of fear.

“In fact, they have failed in their mission because together, we have said no to them. And in saying NO, we must not let them cause us any more harm,” Shettima assured.

On his part as a government, the Governor said:  “The Government of Borno State will continue to provide the necessary support to our gallant military and security agencies and volunteers in their patriotic effort to restore peace and security in our ancestral land.

“We will continue to take preventive measures by working with community leaders across ethnic and religious divides in all our 27 local government areas to increase community policing. We all have roles to play.

“I know the sacrifices many citizens have made and it is because of your devotion that I am urging all the people of Borno State to rise up as one and increase our community vigilance, especially around soft targets.

“We must remobilize ourselves and step up vigilance and community policing around all our population and community centres like mosques, churches, markets, schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, football fields, social gatherings and motor parks. We must watch out for
strange and suspicious faces, not for the purpose of taking the law into our hands but for reporting these suspicious persons to the nearest security agents for prompt action. I urge you, the good people of Borno State, not to despair but to rise as one and stand up to this
murderous gasp of a dying insurgency,” the Governor said.

He expressed gratitude to  international and local humanitarian agencies and development partners for supporting the people of the State while also consoling with  families whose members were either killed, abducted or injured and those who lost property expressing
determination that Borno will bounce back stronger.

Former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, on Thursday, commiserated with the government and people of Borno, over the tragic terror attack on the University of Maiduguri.

Babangida, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, also sympathised with IDPs mistakenly bombed in their Rann camp, by a Nigeria Air Force jet.

He described the fatal accidental discharge as “regrettable”.

“My heart bleeds over the death of citizens at Rann IDP camp and the bombing at the University of Maiduguri Mosque,’’ he said.

He urged the military command to strive to be more precise on enemy targets in the fight against terrorists in the North East.

Babangida also advised the military to introduce new tactics into the fight against Boko Haram to avoid accidental discharges in future.

He called for a synergy between military, civilian vigilante groups and people of North-East toward wiping out remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, and stressed the need to hit their hide-outs to smoke them out.

“Insurgency is not a conventional war; it can only be fought and won using unconventional methods that may be alien.

“But we must do it with creativity,’’ the former president added.

While praying for the speedy recovery of those injured, Babangida urged the Nigerian troops fighting the insurgency, particularly the air force, to apply “maximum professional conduct”.

The former military leader counselled the armed forces on the need to abide by rules of engagement in their operations.

NAN recalls that many people were killed on Tuesday when an air force fighter jet accidentally bombed the Rann IDPs camp.

NAN also recalls that suicide bombers, including a 7-year-old girl, had detonated a twin bomb at the University of Maiduguri Mosque, killing three persons and injuring 17 others.

  • Buhari seeks proper resettlement of IDPs

Buhari seeks proper resettlement of IDPs

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday warned that the two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country must be properly resettled if the country is to avert a relapse into another social crisis.

He gave the warning at a meeting with Sheikh Sharif Mohammed Kabir Ibn Mohammad, the world leader of Tijjaniya Islamic Movement at the State House, Abuja.

The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also lamented the destruction of public institutions in the North East by Boko Haram terrorists.

“Government is faced with the problem of repairing schools, health centres and whole towns. We must repair their schools and recruit teachers otherwise they will become tomorrow’s Boko Haram,” he warned.

Buhari reiterated the importance of justice in the affairs of governance, emphasizing that men and women in authority must show kindness and justice to all the people under them.

In commending the religious group for the profuse prayers they had rendered for three days in Yola, Adamawa State for the recovery of the economy and peace in the country, the President said that the problem oil production is currently experiencing in the country and in the global markets had forced the imperative of agriculture on Nigerians.

“We are learning the hard way.  The mistake we made was to abandon agriculture.  We came at a time of difficulty the country has never experienced since the civil war,” he said.

The President also requested the religious leaders to persuade Nigerians to embrace hard work, endurance and patience, assuring that the administration will not relent in the effort to achieve self-reliance and security for the nation.

In his remarks, Sheikh Sharif Mohammad commended President Buhari’s sense of justice and concern for the people of Nigeria.

He assured the President that the Tijjaniya movement was in full support of the administration and will continue to pray for its success.
