Bad weather affecting raids on Boko Haram hideouts — NAF

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said on Thursday that bad weather is adversely affecting its operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.

The Air Component Commander of “Operation Lafiya Dole,” Air Commodore Tajudeen Oladele, stated this in Yola while briefing journalists on the activities of the command from April to June.

He said: “The major challenge affecting air operations at this period is adverse weather.

“Thunderstorm and rainfall impacted negatively on our operations.

“This is however to be expected during the period under review.

“There were days that flights have to be delayed or cancelled because of weather.”

Despite the challenge, he said significant operations were conducted during the period under review.

The commander said a total of 821 sorties were conducted within 1,256 hours and nine minutes of flight which consumed over two million litres of Jet A 1 and MOGAS worth N334 million.

He said there were times attacks had to be suspended in order not to endanger the lives of innocent civilians.

He reiterated the component’s readiness to sustain its onslaught against Boko Haram and support the operations of ground troops.

The commander promised that the component would also sustain its humanitarian support in the areas of food supply and healthcare services to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the region.

“Our sincere gratitude goes to the Chief of Air Staff for his support. On our part we are always willing and ready to carry out any additional task,” Oladele said.

  • Boko Haram: 37- year old cleric vows to trek from Abuja to Maiduguri if Shekau is captured ‎

‎A 37-year-old Islamic cleric, Ali Ahmad has vowed to embark on ‘foot journey’ from Abuja to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital should the wanted Boko Haram terrorist, Abubakar Shekau is captured.

Ahmad said he would take it upon himself to trek the 844 kilometer journey to celebrate the Nigerian troops if they succeeded in bringing the ‘heartless’ insurgent down.

Checks by this reporter showed that the distance between Abuja and Maiduguri is measured 844.71 kilometers, approximately 70 miles per hour.

His promise is coming on the heels of the recent order by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai to troops fighting Boko Haram in the Northeast to arrest Shekau within 40 days, either dead or alive.

Ahmad made this revelation while speaking during a prayer organised yesterday by some religious bodies to render Boko Haram spiritual base useless on Wednesday.

The groups said they would be embarking on a 40-day prayer and fasting to God to end the reign on insurgency in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Unity Fountain on Wednesday, Ahmad, who claimed to be a native of Gudumbali village in Guzamala LGA of Borno State, said he lost one of his wives and two children to an attack carried out by the Boko Haram insurgents on Monday Market in Maduguri in January 2015.

Ahmad said he decided to relocate from Borno after the deadly attack.

Speaking in Hausa, the emotion-laden man said he has not been able to get back on his feet since the attack, which destroyed his shop and goods worth millions of naira.

“I was doing fine with my family in Maiduguri until January 2015 when the Boko Haram members attacked the Monday Market and killed several people.

“I was in Kano that day to buy goods when I got a call from my house that my wife, Zaina and two sons have been killed by bomb blast. I lost everything I had and I had no choice than to move my remaining family to my village in Gudumbali. From there I moved to Abuja,” he said.

The father of three, who attributed the cause of his misfortunes to the activities of Shekau and his men, said he would be the joyous person if the extremist is eventually captured.

“I am ready to trek from Lagos to Maiduguri if he is arrested. I don’t mind my age and strength. Shekau is an evil man and deserves to die. He will not go unpunished,” Ahmad added.

Ahmad, while acknowledging the efforts of the military in restoring peace back to the volatile community, said the battle is now between God and evil and that’s why the prayer for the soldiers is very important.

He said, “Our military deserves all the support and encouragement from spiritual and political leadership of the country to totally wipe away their tears in the north eastern part  of the country. It will be everyone’s joy to see Shekau in chains.”

  • Boko Haram: Group uncovers plots by politicians to scuttle war against insurgency

A Christian group, under the auspices of Northern Political Youth Christian Forum has claimed that it has uncovered plots by some Nigerian politicians to scuttle the ongoing war against insurgency in north eastern part of the country.

The youth arm of the organization said the politicians have contacted some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to cause mayhem in the already-troubled region.

Addressing newsmen in Jos, the Plateau State capital on Thursday, Zephaniah Abui,
National Coordinator of the group said the people have also perfected plans to use the CJTF to disrupt the visit of the Honorable Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh to Borno State as part of efforts

He said, “We are aware that the disruption is being planned to appear spontaneous whereas it is clearly sponsored for some dark purposes.”

While condemning the development in its entirety as the height of irresponsibility, NCPYF said the alleged plots portray the dismal low to which the sense of propriety has sunk among leaders who would do anything to massage their ego while the larger population of citizens are left to suffer.

Abui said, “It is most unfortunate that the power brokers in Borno State and some parts of the north as represented by the Borno State government have not learnt from their past misadventures in allowing Boko Haram to emerge, fester and became a plague to the entire nation even though the north suffered most.

“We use this opportunity to remind Nigerians and indeed the entire world of the fact that Boko Haram Terror group is a product of politicians arming youths against their opponents. From the experiences, we have been through it can be categorically stated that such enterprise has never ended well. We are consequently at a loss as to what the incentive of the Borno state government is at this time for being involved in such a dastardly plot.

“We issue this timely warning because this was the same way “ECOMOG”, a ragtag group of street urchins, was exploited for political use and ultimately led to the emergence of Boko Haram. It is a mistake that is on the verge of being repeated with the incitement of the Borno CJTF members to harass a visiting minister and to equally carry out other activities in furtherance of their plots to sustain the existence of Boko Haram in the country. What other dirty assignment would the state government have for these youths next?”

Abui added that the crux of the briefing was to draw the attention of the law enforcement agencies to the activities of these politicians who wished to hijack the CJTF for their selfish reasons.

He added, “The visit of the Minister to Borno State is one of the strategies they have hatched to further their agenda in the next few days to sabotage the war against insurgency. The plot, as we gathered, involves inciting the CJTF members to disrupt the Minister’s visit and thereafter use the ensuing chaos as a cover for straggling Boko Haram fighters to regroup. Even more frightening is their expectation that any CJTF member arrested in contrived fracas would be detained alongside Boko Haram hardliners who will then radicalize the arrested persons.”

He further called on members of the CJTF to resist any invitation to anarchy since those pitching this deranged plot to them have other hidden plans that involve great suffering for anyone that allowed themselves to be used.

“Instead of causing confusion, anyone that meets with the Chief Audu Ogbe should rather listen to learn which of the many interventions he has unveiled in other states can be replicated in Borno as a first step towards re-establishing the state as an agricultural power-house as opposed to provoking a fresh circle of violence,” he tasked them.

  • Borno: Nine soldiers feared dead as Book Haram attacks oil workers

Borno: Nine soldiers feared dead as Book Haram attacks oil workers

The prospects of oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria in Borno state  has suffered a major setback as Boko Haram have on Wednesday reportedly ambushed and attack a team of workers between Magumeri and Gubio on their way back to Maiduguri, security sources have revealed.

The source informed that the workers were ambushed around Borno Yeso area of Magumeri, adding that “security personal providing protection and security to the workers including geologists from the University of Maiduguri were also badly affected in the ambushed.

Another source speculated that out of the ten vehicles that conveyed the oil workers including security, only one ten seater bus returned to Maiduguri with five wounded people hospitalized at the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri.

The source added that many have been feared dead or taken alive as no contact has so far been made by some of the members of the team during the attack

There is no official statement from the military command in Borno State and the State Police Command on the attack.

A credible military source also informed our correspondent that   some students of the Geology Department of the University, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and other security personnel were victims of the attack

The Military source regretted that a conspiracy by head of the securities in trying to shield the information from the public.

His words: “As at 9:00 today Wednesday, no rescue plan has been put in place as far as I am aware   from either the Nigeria Airforce component from the Theatre.

“Between Wednesday and today, only ten of the victims can be confirmed to be alive. The five oil workers that escaped the attack Wednesday were hospitalized at the Borno State Specialist Hospital.

“Also this morning around 5:00 precisely five others who escaped also called and told us their location.

“The five victims at the state specialist told us that out of the ten vehicles conveying the team from magumeri, only their vehicle escaped the attack with bullets shots, flat tyres and smashed wind screen.

“They said the insurgents had chased them for more than ten kilometers adding that most of the vehicle and the persons involved did not make it out of Magumeri,” the source disclosed.

The Nation recalls that President Buhari last year issued directives to the NNPC to resume the exploration of oil in the Lake Chad Basin and River Kolnami.

In compliance with the Presidential Directives, the GMD of NNPC sent a delegation to Borno State in May this year who paid courtesies on Gov. Kashim Shettima and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi with the assurance that the exploration will begin in six weeks’ time as peace was gradually returning to the state.

The latest attack has however cast a dark shadow on the prospect of the continuation of the exploration with renewed Boko Haram attacks and the increasing insecurity in the Lake Chad.

UN Security Council urges support for Joint Task Force

The UN Security Council has welcomed recent efforts by the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to combat Boko Haram and called for support by UN member states for the team.

The Security Council President for the month of July, Liu Jieyi, in a  statement, expressed the body’s concern over the threat of terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin.

Liu  condemned all terrorist attacks in the West African sub-region, especially in Northern and Central Mali and the Lake Chad Basin by Islamic State in Iraq and Boko Haram respectively.

He expressed concern over attacks on civilians, the primary victims of terrorist violence and urged a holistic approach to degrade and defeat the terrorists in compliance with international law.

“The Security Council encourages member states and multilateral partners to lend their support to the MNJTF to ensure its full operationalisation.

“This includes the provision of modalities to increase the timely and effective exchange of intelligence to further the region’s collective efforts to combat Boko Haram, whenever possible and appropriate,” Liu said.

He expressed the commitment of the Council to work through the UN Office in West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) to strengthen cooperation in addressing cross-border security threats and curbing the spread of terrorism.

“The Security Council notes the collaboration undertaken between UNOWAS and the Peace-building Commission and encourages continued close and effective cooperation in support of sustainable peace in the region,” Liu said.

He said the Council noted the dire humanitarian situation caused by the terrorists’ activities in the Lake Chad Basin.

He called on the international community to “immediately support the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance for the people most affected by the crisis in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria”.

Liu said support to provide urgent humanitarian assistance for Boko Haram victims included honouring the UN appeal for the Lake Chad Basin region.

He urged regional governments to facilitate humanitarian access and to work with the UN in developing aid delivery options.

  • Shettima to northern elite: what awaits us is worse than Boko Haram

Shettima to northern elite: what awaits us is worse than Boko Haram

Borno State Governor Kashim Shetima has warned that a catastrophe greater than Boko Haram insurgency would befall the North if the elites and public officials do not deliver good governance and cater for the masses in by providing quality education.

The governor spoke at the graduation of 76 girls from secondary schools, including 42 Chibok girls and 34 others who were victims of sectarian violence in Plateau State, yesterday.

The girls were sponsored by an Abuja-based Non-Governmental Organisation, Girl Child Concerns (GCC).

Shettima, who chaired the occasion, lamented that there are at least 100,000 orphans and widows, occasioned by the insurgency, who must be provided for to stop them from becoming a menace to the society.

His words: “By 2050, 70 per cent of Nigerians will live in northern Nigeria. Presently, only 53 per cent are there, with desertification, endemic poverty, pervasive illiteracy, you don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that what awaits us is a fate worse than Boko Haram.

“Women and children bore the brunt of madness in Borno. According to statistics by the World Bank, in partnership with the European Union and the Presidency, Boko Haram created 54,911 widows and 52,311 orphans. If we don’t care for these orphans and widows now, 10 or 15 years down the line, they will become the Frankenstein monsters that will drive us out of this land.

“Seated here are 42 of our girls from Chibok, they are here with other vulnerable girl-child victims of sectarian violence in Plateau State.

“One other painful aspect of the Chibok abduction is that it exposed my concern about the poor quality of our public schools, only those who have been to the deepest valley will appreciate what it is to be on top of the mountain.

“If not for access to western education, I might be rearing goats or be a Quranic scholar somewhere in Maiduguri, because I am a son of a Quranic scholar but today, I am a first generation graduate in my family.”

The governor reiterated there is no option than to fund public education. “For us in Northern Nigeria, we have no option than to invest in education, it is the greatest game changer. For us the elites, we have to invest in the poor or the poor will keep us from sleeping.

“We are the elites, if we go to the interiors, and meet with the common man, there is contempt in their faces for us. We must wear our thinking cap and work for the people, and the most important yardstick is the quality of governance. There is more to leadership than primitive accumulation of capital, there is a certain point when the lifestyle of somebody with N20 million is virtually the lifestyle of somebody with N100 million.

“We must work for the people, create jobs, invest in education, and create the work station for our youths. There is nothing special about oil; human resource is the most important. Chibok is 70 per cent Christian and that is why we have a moral obligation to cultivate the culture of tolerance and inclusivity. That is why I am paying undivided attention to the Chibok girls.”

Shetima praised GCC and its Board chairperson, Dr. Mairo Mandara, describing her as a “daughter of Borno in whom we are well pleased.”

Dr. Mandara said the group’s specific intervention include providing educational opportunities for girls from poor rural communities, mentoring and life skills development, sensitisation on civil rights, and gender equity.

Mandara, who is also the Country Representative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), said the organisation has had a strong focus in the last six years, on meeting the educational and social needs of young girls affected by social unrest in Plateau, and by insurgency in the northeast.

According to her, GCC has been supporting 500 women living in various IDPs camps, saying her organisation was given the responsibility of catering for the escapee Chibok girls.

Mandara said: “It was difficult getting a school for them. When we got custody of these girls, schools refused to accept them for fear of consequences which could follow if the girls were discovered there.

“In another school, some parents threatened to withdraw their children if the girls were offered admission.”

  • Boko Haram: Clerics flag off 40 days fasting in Abuja

Nigerian clerics, numbering over 500 stormed the city of Abuja on Wednesday to pray for the capture of Boko Haram kingpin, Abubakar Shekau.

The clergymen, drawn from many religious backgrounds also called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for the safe return of the remaining Chibok girls.

Recall that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai had given a marching order to the military for the capture of Shekau.

Addressing newsmen at the Unity Fountain in Abuja after the prayer, the National Coordinator, Bishop Musa Fomson said the prayer became imperative following the recent declaration by the army that Shekau must be captured dead or alive in not more than two months

According to Bishop Fomson, the clerics had the burden of seeking God’s intervention to end the menace of Boko Haram in Nigeria at a time when it was wrongly passed off as a conspiracy to frustrate the then President Goodluck Jonathan-led government.

He said, “At that time, Boko Haram had seized so many Nigerian Local Government Areas that were the equivalent of three states; the groups atrocious activities had spread across the northern parts of the country and had reached southwards as far as Okene in Kogi State.

“It is also on record that before our intervention, the group continued to abduct and take women, children and the aged into captivity from their villages into captivity.

“The intercession made by the Northern Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace on behalf of the country were not in vain. We have a God that answers prayers, who is indeed our God. God did not only answer the prayer of the saints and faithful but gave further revelations on actions that this group has to take on behalf of the country.

“We stood in the gap for Nigerians in line with the mandate that this group to holds a nationwide prayer for the President and our country. The outcome of heeding God’s leading is that we were able to make supplication for God to enthrone the leader of his choice for Nigeria, a leader that would end that reckless era of killings, blood and sorrow in our country.

“The result of this intervention is the landslide victory that led to the ascension of President Muhammadu Buhari and this administration.
We are gladdened that God has proven his words in diverse ways with the most outstanding being the defeat of Boko Haram within the first one year of this administration in office.

“It is obvious to all and sundry that the prophecy given to his servants and prophets have once again be proven right and God is never a liar. It is now obvious that peace has returned to the north east and people are now returning home to continue their normal life despite the attendant hardship and pains at the recollection of the bad things that happened in the past. We recognise this as another area where God is calling on his ministers to intervene in bringing succour to his children.

“We are gladdened that we live in a country that has backed our prayers up with action. We prayed for God to end the scourge of Boko Haram and our troops went to battle to decisively deal the dangerous group the blows that has reduced powers of the demons that had blighted the land with the blood of the innocent.

“Our belief is that everything in life is possible with hard work and prayer, we are therefore confident that the arrest or capture of Shekau is a matter of time and this shall manifest to the glory of God.

“We therefore declare today as the commencement of 40 Days National Prayer for the success of Nigerian Troops, return of the remaining Chibok girls and arrest of Shekau and other recalcitrant Boko Haram commanders.”

  • UN pledges to avert worsening food crisis in North-East Nigeria

UN pledges to avert worsening food crisis in North-East Nigeria

The UN says it is doing everything possible to avert further deterioration of the food scarcity by victims of Boko Haram crisis in the North East.

Mr Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated this at a press briefing on Monday in New York.

According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, the food crisis in the northeast is going to deteriorate between now and the end of August, if there is no any action to prevent that.

The deputy spokesman said “we have raised attention, as you know, including at the level of the Secretary‑General, to the food crisis there.

“We have been trying to get humanitarian contributions to Nigeria.

“As you know there are four countries – Nigeria, South Sudan, Yemen and Somalia.

“We have tried to get more assistance to areas in need so that there is no food crisis, and we will continue with that,” said.

Haq said, however, that the UN had no specific deadline to get the funding for the food supplies in the northeast.

“This is something that we and the various agencies of the UN system have been pursuing and will continue to pursue until the material conditions on the ground improve,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that U.S. President Donald Trump recently approved 121 million dollars in aid to feed people facing food crisis because of drought and conflict in Northeast.

The fund was approved through the U.S. Agency for International Development and the project would be carried out by the World Food Programme.
