    Expectations for the week

Many Nigerians who slept early yesterday evening must just be finding the news of the departure of President Buhari shocking this morning. The Nigerian President has gone on medical leave and has handed over power to the Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. After a few weeks of not appearing in public, many Nigerians felt concern for their President’s health, his absence at Federal Executive Council meetings further fueled suspicions that all was not well with him.

Last Friday, he appeared in mosque for the Jumaat prayers but he still wasn’t looking too good. Now that he’s gone abroad for further treatment, people are glad that the President will get the best medical attention and the country will still be in capable hands.

Nigerians are hopeful that the country will experience positive changes under Acting President Yemi Osinbajo just like the last time President Buhari went on medical leave in London.

Yesterday, 82 Chibok girls abducted by Boko haram were swapped by the Federal Government for some commanders of the sect. This cheering news has brought smiles to the faces of many Nigerians who have been concerned about the whereabout of the girls.

Just before his departure for London, President Buhari addressed the girls in Aso Rock. Of course, there has been many questions asked which includes – Why did the Nigerian government have to negotiate with a terrorist organization? Why did it take so long before these girls were released? When will the remaining girls be released?

Anyway, we cannot but give kudos to the Federal Government for rescuing these girls. Their friends and family members must be highly delighted to have them back; hopefully, the other captured girls will be brought back safe and sound.

The National Assembly has proclaimed that the 2017 budget will be ready this week; in fact, it will be ready by Tuesday, 9th May 2017. Members of the Senate have assured Nigerians that the budget will be ready tomorrow. Already, the budget is behind schedule and should have been in operation by now. However, it remains to be seen if the budget will be passed tomorrow as promised or not.

Last week, many Nigerians received with delight the news by Musician cum actor, Bankole Wellignton and actress, Adesua Etomi that they were going to get married. Both celebrities took to their Instagram accounts to announce their love story to the world, they both gave a history of their story and this received pleasant goodwill messages from fellow celebrities and many Nigerians.

Last Saturday, Bankole and Adesua had their introduction ceremony and many celebrity friends of the couple were in attendance. From this corner, we are wishing them a happy married life and we are praying they keep the status despite the many challenges that may be faced.

•Saraki,  Dogara, Atiku,  BBOG, ACF, others happy

Two options came up for the Federal Government during the talks that led to the release of 82 Chibok girls on Saturday, The Nation learnt yesterday.

They are: •swapping the 82 girls with detained Boko Haram members; and

    • paying ransom.

The government chose swapping because, a source said, it did not want a repeat of ransom payment as the case was during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Besides, it took negotiators some months to agree on swapping  because the two sides were consulting.

A source, spoke of how the negotiation took many months because each side was going back and forth to consult on the terms for the release of the 82 girls.

“As a matter of fact, the insurgents wanted ransom and the government had to weigh its implications,” the source said, pleading not to be named, adding:

“At the end of the day, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari opted for swapping instead of payment of ransom to avoid a mistake of the past. The government also felt ransom could further lead to the acquisition of more equipment and ammunition by Boko Haram.

“Above all, the government was guided by the fact that swapping is in line with international best practices. Many countries, including the United States, have undergone some situations like this before.

“So, we saw swapping as cost-effective since Boko Haram has been largely degraded.”

In response to a question, the source said: “Both parties agreed to manage the release of the girls in a no winner, no vanquished manner. We don’t want to jeopardise the chances of freedom for others.”

Amnesty International (AI) yesterday asked the Federal Government to ensure the privacy of the released girls.

AI gave the advice in a statement by its Nigeria Director,  Osai Ojigho.

The statement said: “It is vital now that they receive adequate physical and psychosocial counselling and support so that they can fully reintegrate in their communities.”

  • Chibok community celebrates return of the 82 girls

Members of the Chibok community in Borno on Sunday lauded the Federal Government for securing the release of 82 girls out of those abducted on April 14, 2014 by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

Across section of those interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Chibok, specifically commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the gesture.

“Sincerely speaking I am overwhelmed, this is the kind of information that we have long waited for.

“We appreciate God first and appreciate the government especially the presidency which championed the negotiations,” Mr Ayuba Alamson a community leader said.

He expressed the hope that every other person in captivity of the insurgents will also be set free.

“We pray that this will lead to the release of the remaining girls and all the people that have been captured by the insurgents.

“Our prayer is all of them will be released,” Alamson said.

Alhaji Zanna Modu the District Head of Chibok corroborated the feeling,

“We want to commend all those individuals, organizations the Federal and the Borno State Governments for their role in ensuring the release of the girls.

“Our prayer is for God to give them more wisdom to intervene, so that this thing will come to an end completely.

“I also pray for the president for God to grant him good health, so he can  fulfill all the promises he made to Nigeria like the release of all the Chibok girls and ending Boko Haram insurgency”.

Also speaking Elder Solomon Samuel, also a community leader, described the latest released of the girls as a big surprise.

“Most people did not sleep yesterday in Chibok, they were praying, praising God and some were even shedding tears of joy because of the news.

“I did not sleep until 1 a.m. because of the report on the release of the girls,” Samuel said.

He added:”Sincerely speaking we cannot quantify the level of joy in the community.

“We pray that the next information we will get is that the remaining girls have been released.

“I want to call  on all Boko Haram members that violent campaign will not help them.

“It is high time for them to embrace dialogue let them surrender and embrace dialogue so that peace will return”.

  • Borno elders commend Buhari on Chibok girls release

The Borno Elders Forum, on Sunday described reports of the release of 82 Chibok school girls from the Boko Haram insurgents as a good omen.

Dr Mali Gubio, the Secretary of the forum told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that credit must go to President Muhammad Buhari.

“We are extremely happy to hear the news on the release of the girls; we are grateful to God for showing us this day.

“We believe that Buhari deserve great commendation on this.

“The President has done so much and he is doing well in piloting the affairs of the nation.

“We pray to Almighty Allah to grant him good health, so that he can continue the good work he is doing.

“For the girls we are very happy, we hope they are not traumatised in anyway.

“We believe that it is time the abductors release all the people in their custody; I think they have no reason to keep holding them for no just cause.

“These are helpless vulnerable people who are supposed to be in their villages and hamlets waiting for the rainy season to return to farm.

“It has taken so long, I think that they should have a change of heart to make sure that they end the insurgency.

“There is no reason for us to continue to destroy ourselves, what they are doing is an act of self-destruction, destroying themselves and the society at large,” Gubio, a former Head of Service said.

He said that the insurgents had succeeded in showing their grievances to the world and “it is now time for the insurgency to end even without the military force.

“The insurgents have expressed their grouses or whatever problem they have with the society,” he said.

  • PPA chieftain hails Buhari, Red Cross, over release of 82 Chibok Girls

A chieftain of Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), in Enugu state, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari, Red Cross and Non-Governmental Agencies for the release of 82 Chibok Girls.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Boko Haram members in 2014 abducted more than 200 secondary school girls of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno.

Twenty one of the girls were released in October 2016, while President directed the security agencies to continue the search until all of the affected girls were released and re-united with their families.

Ezeemo told NAN in Enugu on Sunday, that the release would help to check the emotional trauma the parents of the released girls might be facing for over three years.

He noted that the release of this “massive number’’ was an indication that the Federal Government and its partners had the capacity to release the remaining girls.

“I am overwhelmed with joy when I heard about the news.

“It is a good development, coming, timely, before emotional trauma sends the parents of these girls to their early graves.

“It is going to bring a lot of emotional and traumatic relief to these families that had anticipated the return of their daughters,’’ he said.

According to him, the release will also give Nigeria commendable respect in the international circle, once more.

Ezeemo, also a leading industrialist, commended the government of Switzerland for its special interest in ensuring a fruitful negotiation with the insurgents.

“I urge other countries and friends of Nigeria to follow the example of government Switzerland in helping Nigeria, practically, in solving its national challenges.”

She said the young girls would need psyco-dynamic counselling sessions before being re-integrated into their various communities. (NAN)

Respect the privacy of released Chibok girls, Amnesty tells Fed Govt

Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian government to respect the privacy of the 82 Chibok girls released on Saturday by the Boko Haram insurgents.
In a statement by the Osai Ojigho, Amnesty International’s Nigeria Director, the organisation said it is vital now that they receive adequate physical and psychosocial counselling and support so that they can fully reintegrate in their communities.
He said the government should ensure that the released girls are reunited with their families and not kept in lengthy detention and security screening which can only add to their suffering and plight.
“Boko Haram members have executed and tortured thousands of civilians and raped and forced into marriage girls and women. They have been indoctrinated and even forced to fight for Boko Haram. The Nigerian authorities must now do more to ensure the safe return of the thousands of women and girls, as well as men and boys abducted by Boko Haram,” Amnesty International stated.

Don urges foreign support for rehabilitation of released 82 Chibok girls

A don, Dr Mustapha Hussaini, has called for assistance from the international community to complement Federal Government’s efforts towards rehabilitating the released 82 abducted Chibok girls.

Hussaini, a Criminologist and Head of the Department of Sociology, Federal University Dutse made the call in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

He said that for more than three years in abduction have affected the abducted girls psychologically.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the 82 abducted Chibok girls were released after negotiations and the release of some suspected Boko Haram members in government custody.

The Nigerian security operatives received the girls at the Banki village in Bama Local Government of Borno on Saturday.

The lecturer said developed countries and philanthropists should support Nigerian government in rehabilitating the abductees and remedy the damage done to them.

Hussaini, said that having stayed long in captivity, the girls’ perception about normal life must have changed.

“They must have been used to life in the jungle for three years.

“The girls are now in a state of confusion; coming to be exposed to normal life after they were used to another life with insurgents for three years.

“Most of these girls were Christians before they were abducted by the terrorists that may have indoctrinated them with their (terrorists) misguided faith.

“Being detached from their parents for three years, their mode of life and thinking must have changed by now,’’ he said.

The lecturer further remarked that the release of this batch of abducted girls was a demonstration that Boko Haram group was still intact and well organised.

Hussaini, therefore, charged security to be more alert and improve on their intelligence gathering to rescue the remaining girls. (NAN)

Buhari to receive freed 82 Chibok girls exchanged for Boko haram suspects

President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to receive the 82 Chibok girls released on Saturday by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
A statement on Saturday night by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that the girls were exchanged for some Boko Haram suspects in custody.

    •BBOG: our hopes, expectations high

One thousand, one hundred and eighteen days after their abduction by terror sect Boko Haram, freedom yesterday came the way of 82 more of the Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, students.

The girls were among the 227 kidnapped from their dormitory on the night of April 14, 2014.

They were let go by their abductors after another lengthy round of negotiations with the federal government, seven months after the release of the first batch of the kidnapped girls.

Twenty-one were in that first batch set free in October last year.

The 82 girls were released at Banki at the Nigeria/Cameroun border and are currently in the custody of security agencies and 152 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in the town.

A security source confirmed the release, saying: “more Chibok girls have regained their freedom from the insurgents. I think about 82 of them.”

Some foreign news agencies put the figure of the released girls at 50.

Security sources said last night that they will be flown to Maiduguri today before being relocated by the military and security agencies for de-briefing and rehabilitation.

A source, speaking on the development said: “It is difficult to tell you how the freedom was secured because it was a covert or intelligence operation.

“All I can say is that the latest negotiation was well-protected to avoid leaks which could jeopardize the release of the girls.

“Actually when the 21 Chibok girls were released in October 2016, another batch of 56 was expected to follow but the leakage made the insurgents to change their mind.

“This time around, all the parties to the agreement strictly kept to the terms without leaks.”

The source confirmed that the girls were “set free in Banki town, which is a border town with Cameroon and Chad. In fact, on both sides of Banki, you might not know the difference between Nigerians and Cameroonians. This shows that the insurgents are still operating not only in Sambisa but some border villages.

“Banki also hosts an international cattle market. It cannot be ruled out as a strategic supply route for the insurgents.”

Asked which of the factions of Boko Haram granted freedom to the girls, the source added: “I cannot say now.”

Highly placed military sources have confirmed the release of a group of Chibok school girls abducted three years ago by the Boko Haram Terrorists.

The source however could not put a figure to the number of girls released saying “they are more than 50.”

However, Military authorities told The Nation that the news of the release cannot yet be confirmed.

Director Defence Information (DDI), Major General John Enenche said he was not aware of the information and promised to call back as soon as he was briefed.

Also, calls to the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman were not picked.

But sources say the girls are already in Banki village which is close to the Cameroon border. It was also learnt that the girls will be airlifted by the Nigerian Air Force Mi-35M gun ship helicopter to a safe location.

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, who took part in previous talks to free the girls, was quoted yesterday by PREMIUM TIMES as saying he was aware that “about 85% negotiations had been completed last night (Friday).”

“Although I did not participate in the negotiations, but, I am fully in the know of what was going on,” he said, after tweeting earlier in the day: “Chibok girls shall be free Insha Allah.”

The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group which has been in the fore front of the agitation of the rescue of the girls said last night that it was awaiting confirmation of the girls’ release.

Its spokesperson, Sesugh Akume, said: “We have been made aware of the yet-to-be-confirmed news that a number of our missing 195 Chibok girls in captivity have been released through negotiation.

“It would be recalled that in October last year when the 21 were released, the Federal Government, specifically the Presidency said that 83 more were ‘on their way’.

“We await official confirmation from the Federal Government and a release of their names. We shall go to work to confirm the news to verify its authenticity, and communicate same to the public.

“Our hopes and expectations are high as we look forward to this news being true and confirmed.”

Leader of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign group, Dr Oby Ezekwesili said she was praying hard that report of the release of 80 Chibok girls by Boko Haram group “is true.”

“You CAN’T imagine how HARD my heart is beating right now as I furiously PRAY that this news of release of 80 of OUR #ChibokGirls is true,” Ezekwesili wrote on her Twitter handle, Obyezeks.

“None of us CAN EVER imagine how 80 parents of OUR #ChibokGirls would feel should that news be TRUE. NO. ONLY THEY CAN KNOW THAT FEELING,” she added in another tweet.

Only last month during the third anniversary of the abduction of the girls, the group came hard on the federal government for “not doing enough to rescue the girls from Boko Haram.”

It blasted President Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly failing to fulfil his election promise to get the girls out of bondage.

The president denied the allegation and declared that as a parent, “I feel what you feel.”

He said his government was in continuous negotiations through international intermediaries with the captors.

Buhari vowed that his administration would do everything necessary to secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls.

In a message to mark the third anniversary of the abduction Buhari said he was willing to bend over backwards to make the abductors of the girls release them.

His words: “like I have repeatedly said, the Federal Government is willing to bend over backwards to secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls.

“We have reached out to their captors through local and international intermediaries, and we are ever ready to do everything within our means to ensure the safe release of all the girls.

“I wish to reassure the parents of the Chibok girls, all well-meaning Nigerians, organisations and the international community that as a government, we are unrelenting on the issue of the safe return of our children.

“I trust God that soon, our collective efforts will be rewarded with the safe return of our schoolgirls to their families, friends and their communities.’’

He stated that Nigerians had every reason to celebrate the return of 24 of the Chibok schoolgirls as well as thousands of other Nigerians who were abducted by the terrorists.

He said government was in constant touch through negotiations and local intelligence to secure the release of the remaining girls and other abducted persons unharmed.

“As a parent, I am eternally grateful to God that some of the girls were found alive and have been reunited with their families,’’ he added.

According to the President, government is doing all within its powers to reintegrate the freed girls to normal life.

He expressed appreciation to the parents and families of the abducted girls that had endured three years of agony and waiting for the return of their children.

He appealed to the parents and all Nigerians not to lose hope on the return of the remaining schoolgirls.

The Nigerian military recaptured Banki in September 2015 after fierce battles with the insurgents.

The Defence Headquarters had in 2015 described the town as a major centre of   economic and trading activities between Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African countries.

It said:”The recapture of the strategic town was facilitated by concerted efforts of the Nigerian Air Force and close liaison with the Cameroon’s Army.

“The recapture of this town apart restoring Nigeria’s territory law, would improve the economic activities in that area.”

The release of the first batch of the 21 Chibok girls last year was also effected in that town.

They were handed over to a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross who provided assistance during the transfer of the girls.

A few hours later this group of young girls landed in Abuja.

The government said at that time that negotiations with Boko Haram would continue to free the 197 students who were still missing.
