FG will prosecute Boko Haram suspects – NSA

The Federal Government has vowed to prosecute Boko Haram terrorists and others involved in acts of terrorism, using the instruments of the law.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), stated this on Tuesday in Abuja, at the technical consultations on developing comprehensive approach to prosecuting, rehabilitating, and reintegrating former members of Boko Haram terrorists.

Monguno maintained that Nigeria is determined to win the fight against terrorism through its core national values, which includes respect for human rights as guaranteed by Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution and relevant international human rights conventions.

He said, “Whereas violent do not respect human rights, and share no such values, we are committed to ensuring that every suspect charged with terrorism has a day in court.”

He stated that counter-terrorism measures are only effective when anchored within a rule of law and human rights framework, saying Nigeria undertook a holistic approach to strengthening the criminal justice system to serve as the most formidable weapon against terrorism.

The NSA said Nigeria is partnering with European Union (EU), United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and other relevant agencies to find the best “approach to prosecuting, rehabilitating and reintegrating former members of Boko Haram.”

“We are therefore looking beyond the ongoing counter-insurgency campaigns in the Northeast to the next phase where Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs) who had either repented or had passed through the criminal justice process were rehabilitated and reintegrated back to the society,” Monguno stated.

Tinubu seeks final push against Boko Haram

    •APC stalwart greets Muslims

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has called for a final push against Boko Haram members to bring their dastardly acts against innocent lives to an end.
He spoke yesterday in a statement felicitating with Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-el-Maulud Festival, birth of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
He urged the Muslim faithful to imbibe the virtues of Prophet Muhammed, which include love, peaceful coexistence and sacrifice and to support President Muhammadu Buhari as he tackles the nation’s problems, particularly the challenges posed by the economic recession.
Praying for the souls of the victims of the suicide bombings in Madagali, Adamawa State and Maiduguri Monday Market in Borno State, Tinubu said it was regrettable and hurtful to see hundreds of lives lost needlessly.
The statement reads: “I felicitate with Muslim faithful in the country on this occasion of Eid-el-Maulud Festival (Birth of Prophet Muhammed) (PBUH). I urge them to imbibe the virtues of Prophet Muhammed, among them love, peaceful co-existence and sacrifice, and to exhibit those attributes as we relate with one another.
“Let us also use the occasion to pray for the country and for President Muhammadu Buhari as he boldly confronts the challenges facing the country. The government needs our support, understanding and indeed sacrifice to end the present economic recession. Surely, there would be light at the end of the tunnel.
“I enjoin Muslims, indeed all Nigerians to be on the alert: pay particular attention to their security by being mindful of movements around them, being watchful of their surroundings and neighbours, by cooperating with and giving security men information when they suspect untoward developments.
“Boko Haram terrorists will be defeated as they engage in the antics of a drowning man. I salute and encourage our men and women in uniform not to relent. Nigerians are proud of their exploits.
“As we pray for the country and our troops for Boko Haram to come to an end, I call on our Muslim brothers and sisters across the country to also endeavour to get involved in providing support for the physically- displaced persons in the Northeast. This war will and must come to an end.
“I seek prayers for the souls of victims of the suicide bombings in Madagali, Adamawa State and Maiduguri Monday Market in Borno State. It is regrettable and hurtful to see hundreds of lives lost needlessly. These dastardly acts against innocent lives must be condemned and those behind it brought to justice. That is what we all should be about and united over – bringing these attacks to an end. On this, I stand united with President Buhari in his concerted effort to restore security to the Northeast and other parts of Nigeria.
“I wish all Muslim faithful happy Eid-el-Maulud celebration.”

Army declares ‘no more time to waste’ on Boko Haram

The troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have entered the heart of Sambisa forest from various fronts. They are recording huge successes clearing out the last frontier of Boko Haram terrorists’ hideouts.

During several operations, including Operation Rescue Finale, which is the continuation of Operation Crackdown aimed at rescuing all the Chibok school girls and other hostages held deep inside Sambisa Forest, troops have rescued 801 hostages, between November 23 and December 5. However, it is still unclear if there are any Chibok girls among them.

The theater commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Leo Irabor, gave a full account of the operations in Maiduguri. His verdict: the offensive against Boko Haram has been successful.

Gen. Irabor said the operation into the heart of Sambisa forest is in several fronts and it included collaborations with the  Air Force, which has been deeply involved in the fight against the insurgency. He also revealed that the two Boko Haram factions have been fighting each other, causing disarray in the rank and file of the insurgents.

Maj.-Gen. Irabor said: “On one of the fronts, on 30th November, the troops cleared Goneri before harbouring at Goni Kurmi. While at harbour at Goni Kurmi the troops were attacked by the Boko Haram terrorists with the hope of slowing down their push.  The attack was successfully repelled with the Boko Haram terrorists suffering casualties. The troops recovered one AK 47 rifle, different calibers of ammunitions and magazines.

“The advance continued the following day and our troops successfully cleared Alafa 1, 2 and 3 respectively before harbouring at Bula Bello.

“On December 5, the troops cleared Boko Haram terrorists delay positions before capturing Njimia. At Njimia our troops were attacked by the terrorists with Anti-Aircraft guns and small arms fire.  The attack lasted for about 30 minutes but was successfully repelled with Boko Haram terrorists suffering heavy casualties in both men and equipment before retreating. However, one soldier and 2 Civilian JTF were wounded.  The soldier and one Civilian JTF later died while being evacuated to the hospital.

“Yesterday (last wednesday), at about 4.00pm, Intelligence Surveillance  and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft identified Boko Haram terrorists massing up to attack own troops at Njimia.  Our Artillery and air assets were used to engage the Boko Haram terrorists who led to the destruction of 4 vehicles, a fuel tanker likely laden with Improvised Explosive Devices. The Air Force also strafed and killed many fleeing insurgents.

“Meanwhile, I can confirm to you that the BHTs are in total disarray due to our current military operations. Even the Maman Nur and Shekau factions clashed again recently which has further forced the Boko Haram terrorist’s remnants at Kafa to disperse in confusion and desperation.”

The troops entered Sambisa forest on the second front through Amdaga and cleared the initial Boko Haram camps in the axis before camping for the night. However, Boko Haram terrorists carried out a probing attack on the troops which was swiftly dealt with before the Boko Haram terrorists retreated.

The following day, the troops cleared and occupied Dure and have been operating in the general area to intercept fleeing Boko Haram terrorists.

The third front moved from Bitta through Sassawa to Tokombore. The troops cleared all Boko Haram terrorists’ camps on their axis and subsequently occupied blocking position towards Sambisa “S” Shape. The Army Special Forces (SF) consisting of specially trained and tested operatives continued with the offensive and entered the River Line “S” Shape in the heart of the Sambisa forest.

Tragedy struck when the troops on this axis stepped on Boko Haram terrorists Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) which was immediately followed by Boko Haram terrorists attack. The attack was successfully repelled with several Boko Haram terrorists killed during the encounter battle.

“Unfortunately, we lost a soldier and 9 others were wounded from the Improvised Explosive Devices incident. The dead and wounded soldiers were evacuated by the Nigerian Air Force. The wounded are currently receiving treatment in our Hospital,”Maj.-Gen. Irabor said.

    Sambisa Gate 1

On November 30, the troops pressed forward towards Sambisa Gate 1 but had to clear Boko Haram camps at Jefe, Ndenema and Turori villages and subsequently stayed at Kazalamari village. The advance continued the following day with the troops clearing the Boko Haram terrorists from Sambisa Gate 1.

At about 10:55 am, the troops successfully cleared and entered Sambisa Gate 1, during the advance, the  troops encountered (IED) and had contact with the Boko Haram terrorists at Garin Dinya village.  A total of 19 Boko Haram terrorists were killed while four  AK-47 rifles and eight magazines including other weapons of the Boko Haram terrorists were captured. However, one officer, a soldier and 2 Civilian JTF were wounded in action and were airlifted by helicopter for medical attention.

     Subsidiary Operations

In the fight for the heart of Sambisa forest, troops also conducted subsidiary operations aimed at intercepting fleeing or relocating terrorists. In several clearance operations, one insurgent has been arrested and has been providing several intelligence to the troops on the operations of the terrorist cells.

On November 28 2016, the troops conducted a clearance patrol in Dogon Chukwu general area. During the encounter with the insurgents, one Boko Haram was killed, one wounded and others fled. The wounded, dressed in camouflage uniform, is receiving treatment and helping with useful information for the operation.

On December 1, 2016 at about 1.00pm, while conducting raid operation in Daban Giwa, Daban Masara,  Gratte and other adjoining villages, troops encountered Boko Haram terrorists coming out of the creek to mount their horses in the general area of Gratte. A fire fight ensued and the Boko Haram terrorists fled into the creeks with gunshot wounds. However, 32 of their horses died in the cross fire. An officer was wounded in action by grenade fragments during that operation.

Arrest of Fleeing Boko Haram  terrorists members

General Irabor said the tenacity of the troops have led to the successful arrest of fleeing members of Boko Haram. Irabor said:  “On 28th November 2016 at about 3.55pm, troops in conjunction with vigilante on recce/fighting patrol to Kadauri, Yuramti and Mandari Villages intercepted and apprehended 13 Boko Haram terrorists/Boko Haram terrorists Sympathizers and 51 of their family members at Yuramti village. Also, on 29th November 2016, troops deployed at Buni Gari in conjunction with the vigilantes apprehended 14 Boko Haram terrorists escapees made up of three men, three women and eight children from Gorobcha Village, North East of Ajigin. One of the men was found to be involved in rearing of livestock for the insurgents.

“Similarly, on the same day at about 1.20pm a Boko Haram terrorist suspect, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed was arrested at Helma Jibir village in Biu LGA by own troops. The suspect was arrested with provisions, drugs which are mostly analgesics/sedatives and 31 wraps of weed suspected to be cannabis. Suspect has since been undergoing investigation.

“On December 1, 2016 at about 1.30am, own troops in conjunction with Civilian JTF arrested two Boko Haram terrorists suspects. The suspects were arrested while trying to move some items into the bush for Boko Haram terrorists.

“Items recovered include 5 packets of Trammol, 4 new wrappers, 14 pairs of slippers, a world receiver radio, 5 packets of Maggi star, 7 rolls of Klin detergent, a packet of 1.5v battery, 2 packets of matches, 2 sets of children wears, a bicycle tube, tyre/free wheel, really extra tablet, kola nuts and 2 half bags of salt.

“On December 3, 2016 at about 11.00am, own troops in conjunction with local vigilante, while on fighting patrol along Kafa-Goniri road arrested seven confirmed Boko Haram terrorists members. The arrested Boko Haram terrorists pretended to be Internally Displaced Persons in order to gain access into Goniri so as to escape the current military operations. They were arrested with 50 women and children. They are currently in own custody giving useful information necessary for our operations.

“Likewise, on 4th December 2016 at about 1.35pm, own troops in conjunction with local vigilante intercepted 5 men, 29 women and children heading towards Goniri from Kafa. The men were screened by the local vigilante and 2 of the men were confirmed to be BHTs. They have since been taken to custody and are undergoing interrogation.”

Boko Haram terrorists  ambush on convoy

“On December 4, 2016 at about 3.35pm, the rear element of the civilian convoy being escorted by own troops was ambushed by fleeing Boko Haram terrorists  from Alagarno general area. Reinforcement from troops deployed at Komala and Musafanari immediately mobilised to clear the ambush. After exchange of fire with the insurgents, own canter vehicle carrying a faulty motorcycle was carted away, while a civilian was injured and has been stabilised.

“Also, a white Hilux vehicle in the convoy was carted away while a Boko Haram terrorists buffalo gun truck mounted with Anti-Aircraft gun and spare barrel were captured by own troops. One soldier is currently missing following that encounter.

“In the last two weeks, our troops have so far provided 38 escorts duties to several humanitarian agencies, staff and logistics within the Theatre. Troops have equally carried out patrols along the main road to ensure safe passage of logistics and commuters.

“During the period under review, 3 additional units were generated to improve on the manpower holding in the operations. Recently, additional special force battalion on completion of Theatre specific training was inducted. Furthermore, in-theatre training for troops is being conducted to boost the operational capacity of the Theatre,” Irabor said.

The theater commander also revealed that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai Goodwill Message titled: “No more time to waste” has boosted the morale of troops. “Let me therefore; reiterate my earlier admonishment to the misguided Boko Haram terrorist’s elements to give up their ignoble adventure. They are advised to surrender to the military or other security agencies without further delay.

“I wish to re-assure them that they would be humanely treated in line with international best practices and in accordance with the International Humanitarian Law. Failure to do so would be unpalatable for them. I wish to equally state that plans have been concluded to give those who surrender, a purpose-driven rehabilitation which will make them lead a responsible life with other citizens,” he said.

  • Buratai charges troops to finish-off Boko Haram quickly

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai has charged Nigerian soldiers to finish off Boko Haram remnants on time to enable Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) return to their homes.

The Chief of Army Staff gave the charge when he visited troops of the 81 battalion in Damboa Local Government Area in Borno state.

Buratai who reiterated the determination of the army towards enhancing the welfare of troops, said rotation of soldiers would take place after every six months of deployment.

“I am sure you have read and heard the message I sent across. If you are aware of it then we must work to get out of this place. We must work to get out of this operation very quickly. We must defeat Boko Haram.

“I was in one of the barracks and many of the troops were already there and I have assured your families that many of you will go back next Year.

“81 battalion is my unit too when I was a lieutenant Colonel. This unit has seen it all. You fought along with the Cameroonian troops in this battle which means you are better placed to deal with this criminals.

“We must continue with the aggressive actions, patrol and ambush. You must move into all the hideouts of these criminals and fish them out. Some of your colleagues in Sambisa Forest are dealing with them properly.

“You are better equipped, better motivated and mobile. The army has provided you with better equipment to fish Boko Haram out and deal with them completely.

“I wish to commend your effort and I urge you all to maintain the momentum and keep it high. Nigerians are proud of you. President Muhammadu Buhari the Commander in Chief is also pleased with you,” he said.

The COAS also visited Alpha Company of 25 brigade in Damboa where he assessed the newly constructed permanent headquarters of the brigade. (NAN)

  • Boko Haram plc?

Numerous titles assailed me, so to speak, as I was about to start this piece. In fact, the issue on my mind was something to do with the need for President Muhammadu Buhari to tweak his cabinet quickly (we may yet return to this someday soon) but this Boko Haram (BH) puzzle suddenly seemed to fall into place and one dove into it.

The news of the fall of Lt. Col. Abu Ali supposedly in a BH fire fight recently, once again brought to the fore, a thought that had tortured one since this so-called terror insurgency took a fierce turn in 2009. In fact one had actually written tangentially about all these over this period.

“So there are elders in Borno?” (The Nation Friday, July 29, 2011), is a peek into the roles of the elite and elders of Borno. Way back then, Boko Haram had made one of the early peace overtures. They had demanded that 12 states be ceded to them to govern under Sharia law. They asked that the Joint Task Force in the Northeast be withdrawn.

Following on the heels of BH demands, a group known as Borno Elders and Leaders of Thought (BELT) emerged from its shadowy corners to support BH’s demand for the withdrawal of troops as a condition for peace. Not a few were distraught by the intervention of this group that had maintained an ominous silence in nearly two years of wanton blood-letting and human carnage in the Northeast.

And many kicked not because of the outrageous statement of this group, but the weight of its membership. Here is a roll call: Babagana Kingibe, Mohammed Goni, Abba Kyari, Maina Ma’aji Lawan, Ahmed Alghazali and Ibrahim Bunu. In their self-deprecating chicanery, they compared BH to the Niger Delta militants.

But speaking about BH at that time and lending credence to my thoughts, the then governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, noted that “the social insecurity that has engulfed Nigeria is planted and perpetrated by the elite against the majority of the population.” Late last year, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, had cried out, accusing Borno elders of sabotaging the ongoing military operations in the Northeast of Nigeria in order to prolong the BH insurgency.

Buratai said: “The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hail from Borno State in particular and Northeast generally that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.

“It has come to our knowledge that they are employing every means to see that the operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.”

Until the Buhari administration gives a thought to the possibility that BH may well be a huge scam being perpetrated by half smart people in a semi-failed country, he would spend his term, wasting our time and resources, yet this voodoo would outlive his office. Until you probably diagnose an ailment, you may well be treating a boil instead of cancer and vice-versa.

The fact of BH which we all know (including PMB) is that it is the brainchild of a certain Governor Modu Sheriff and some of his aides and acolytes. After the death in police custody of the ring leader, Ibrahim Yussuf, the gang was fiercely militarised and all sorts of carpetbaggers joined the bazaar.

In a situation where the government at the centre was weak and stupid; and had lost control of a large swathe of its territory in the Southeast, the place was left open to be plundered by anyone who could acquire sizeable quantity firearms.

Since the situation was badly compromised, even government agencies and institutions joined in the pillage. It therefore became Boko Haram plc. That is how come the office of the National Security Adviser under the late Gen. Owoeye Azazi and Col.Sambo Dasuki became the honey pot of the federation. Out of desperation, the government of the day in fact wayward, merely played around with the cash.

Thoroughly exasperated at that time, I had asked on this page (March 7, 2014) “Where on earth is Dasuki?” “Where is the NSA? becomes urgent and strident if we consider that in the attack in Mafa Local Government of Borno last Sunday, it was reported that the locals got information about the impending mayhem about two weeks earlier. It was indeed for this reason that just about 35 people were killed when the marauders came rampaging, otherwise it would have been the mother of all slaughter, we learnt. Most women and children were said to have vacated the community.

We cry in disgust because despite about two weeks’ notice, the terrorists overran and torched the military camp in Mafa as our soldiers reportedly fled. How many innocent Nigerians (including military and security personnel) have been slaughtered in the Northeast in the last two weeks and hurriedly dumped in mass graves like mere dirt?” This was over two and a half years ago.

This column wagers that the racket of Boko Haram has continued even till now. So many unanswered questions support this supposition: one, why are we still buying jets and even more jets if we are told that BH has been technically defeated? And why would the West not sell arms to Nigeria again; are they seeing massive corruption?

More questions: who are the financiers of Boko Haram; how come not one person has been traced? Kabiru Sokoto was once arrested in a state government’s liaison office in Abuja, what was the connection? Why is there no expedited and public trial of some arrested kingpins like Sokoto?

More questions on Chibok and Sambisa: who were the negotiators in the recent? Who did they negotiate with? Does this suggest that the core of BH is still active and resident somewhere in Nigeria? Are we to believe that the rest of the Chibok girls are still being kept in some camp somewhere in Nigeria?

Finally, why has this so-called Sambisa forest proved impregnable and so difficult to wire up and combed through. Are we to believe that the Nigerian military, security and intelligence establishments are so worthless that a band of hoodlums would camp in a forest and terrorise the nation for seven years without let?

Honestly we are sick of this Boko Haram racket. I suggest the President must do one of the following quickly: order that Sambisa forest be cleared or set ablaze; cede the forest to Cameroun; or disband the entire Nigeria military and get a battalion from Israel to clean up the Northeast in three weeks flat.

I am sure that one of these options will work!

    Where is the Aviation Minister?

Do we still have an Aviation Minister? How come I do not even know his name after one year in office? How come he does not seem to know that his sector is in turmoil and may well be on the verge of a major calamity if nothing is done quickly?

It is plain (plane) madness in most of our airports recently as there are probably more rescheduled and cancelled flights daily than those accomplished. Arik Air, Nigeria’s major domestic carrier, is so enmeshed in crises that its offices are invaded by angry passengers daily. On some occasions, flights are physically disrupted.

Where is the minister in the midst of all this? Talk of square pegs in round holes in this administration. In one year of her appointment in 2012, Mrs. Stella Oduah had gone far in a simultaneous massive re-construction work of over 12 airports across the country. In 18 months, Oduah had completed most of what will stand today as the most revolutionary turnaround of the aviation sector in Nigeria since independence.

Three years after she was removed, a few projects she had yet completed remain uncompleted. Even air conditioners in departure lounges can no longer be maintained…

  • That December deadline on Boko Haram

SIR: Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, Nigerian Chief of Army Staff on Sunday December 4, urged the gallant Nigerian Army to embark on the final offensive action and a comprehensive sweep of the operational theatre in the North-east with a view to ending the war against Boko Haram on a high note.

On a similar note, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday December 6, while speaking at a panel of Heads of State in Dakar, Senegal, at the Third Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, assured the international community that the security situation in Nigeria has improved significantly – thus the end of Boko Haram terrorists was in sight. The two generals are not mincing their words; it is a show of political will from the political class and determination from the Nigerian Army to defeat the terrorists.

While some people have questioned the feasibility of completely clearing the remnants of Boko Haram terrorist in the northeast by December, majority of the people in the northeast have confidence in General Buratai; his gallant officers and President Buhari’s political will to win the war against Boko Haram. They are very happy with the level of success recorded by the military so far. The people of the northeast are experiencing the difference between the former administration’s sloppy handling of the war and the doggedness and commitment being shown by the Buhari government.

Anyone who comes to the North-east now will see the obvious resolve of the Nigerian army to win the war; confidence on the faces of the soldiers on ground. The number of war planes and their activities in skies especially from Yola airport will certainly tell any doubting Thomases that Buratai and his men are matching President Buhari’s words with action.

Now Boko Haram is being chased out of villages and their camps in bushes, unlike before when they were capturing big towns and annexing local government areas and renaming them. Boko Haram is no longer holding a single territory in the 774 LGAs in Nigeria. This is a sweet thing to hear and every Nigerian should give Buratai and his men a pat on the back.

The people of the northeast are with Buratai, because they now see the Nigerian soldiers are very confident; fully kitted; well-armed and tackling Boko Haram head on. The people of the Northeast are appreciative of Buratai’s approach to the war- because now, the rights of people and their humanity are always protected by the soldiers while the war rages on. People now see the military as their shield and protectors unlike before when they feared both Boko Haram and the military.

Buratai and his men have a resolve to clear remnants of Boko Haram by December, the people of the North-east are happy and have strong confidence in Buratai, the feet on the ground and the commander-in-chief.

Boko Haram: Nigerian military to reopen key Borno road after 3 years

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno said on Thursday that the Nigerian military is poised to re-open the Maiduguri-Magumeri-Gubio and Damasak roads.

Shettima made this known when the Governor of Difa, Republic of Niger, Muhammad Dandano, paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Maiduguri.

The roads have remained closed to vehicular traffic since 2013 when Boko Haram activities in Borno were at their peak.

He said the state government would commence reconstruction of Damasak in 2017 to enable inhabitants of the area to return to their homes.

    “Rebuilding Damasak is our priority.

“The Borno Abadam, Mobar and Magumeri people are rich farmers; they do not need any help if you return them to their communities.

“We commend the Republic of Niger for hosting about 90,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs),” said Shettima.

Speaking, Dandano said his country had continued to give its maximum support to victims of violence displaced by Boko Haram insurgency.

Dandano said IDPs from Nigeria were at the moment living peacefully and going about their normal socio-economic activities in Difa.

“We are giving the IDPs our maximum support as many of them have taken up farming and other ventures.

“When you go there you will hardly differentiate between an IDP from Nigeria from a Nigerien.

“We have also issued birth certificates to the children, who were born in Niger to enable them to have an identity,’’ said Dandano.

Boko Haram’s end in sight, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Dakar, Senegal, assured the international community that the end of Boko Haram terrorism was in sight.
He also lauded the increased cooperation between Nigeria and its neighbours in the fight against terrorism.
Speaking at a Panel of Heads of State at the third Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, Buhari assured the international community that the security situation in Nigeria had improved significantly.
Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “About a month ago, I spoke with the President of Chad and I was pleased that a number of Chadians and Nigerians, who were Boko Haram members, are surrendering en-masse.
“The good news I have is that the end of the raining season has come in the North eastern region of Nigeria. Members of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) are in their respective positions and, at an agreed time, they will move simultaneously and spontaneously for us to see the end of Boko Haram.
“We are now operating in the Sambisa Forest and as far as Boko Haram is concerned in the Lake Chad Basin area, I think they are done for.” Highlighting the gains of the cooperation among the Lake Chad Basin Commission countries comprising Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Benin Republic and Nigeria, Buhari told the gathering that Boko Haram is no longer holding any territory or Local Government Area (LGA) in Nigeria.
“Those who live in the Northeast know that Boko Haram is no longer holding a single territory in the 774 councils in Nigeria. But they have a system of using Improvised Electronic Devices (IEDs), indoctrinate mostly teenage girls and send them to soft targets to churches, mosques and market places. That too is becoming very rare.
“I think Boko Haram shot themselves in the foot when they gave their ideology a religious connotation by killing children in their schools, people in the mosque and churches and shouting Allahu Akbar.
“This is a major contradiction as no religion advocates hurting the innocent. You can’t kill people and say Allahu Akbar. You either do not know what you are saying or you don’t believe it,” Buhari said.
The president noted that Nigeria is capable of surmounting its security challenges as he appealed to the international community to focus more attention on addressing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and unemployment in Nigeria.
“In the southern part of the country, stolen Nigerian crude is being illegally transported through the Gulf of Guinea and installations offshore are being subverted. We also have the problem of unemployment in Nigeria. With a population of 180 million people of which 65 per cent are under the age of 35, young Nigerians are looking for any kind of job to survive.
“We are addressing the situation (unemployment) by turning to agriculture and solid minerals because we are lucky to be blessed with arable land, water and resources,” he said.

No corps member was killed by Boko Haram, says Shettima

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has said no corps member was killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno in the last five years.
Shettima was addressing the 2016 Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed in Borno State in Bauchi State, yesterday.
The governor, who noted that some of them may be planning to redeploy, assured them of their safety.
He promised that whoever serves in Borno, under his administration, would have his or her best moments as a graduate, adding that a former minister also persuaded his daughter not to redeploy.
Shettima, who passionately sang the NYSC anthem to the amazement of the corps members, announced the donation of cows, 100 bags of rice, beans and other ingredients.
Borno State NYSC Coordinator Lawwal Turawa thanked the Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, for relocating the corps members to the College of Education, Kangere, which he described as convenient.

Highlighting the gains of the cooperation among the Lake Chad Basin Commission countries comprising Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Benin Republic and Nigeria, Buhari told the gathering that Boko Haram is no longer holding any territory or Local Government Area (LGA) in his country.

“Those who live in the North East know that Boko Haram is no longer holding a single territory in the 774 LGAs in Nigeria. But they have a system of using IEDs and they indoctrinate mostly teenage girls and send them to soft targets to churches, mosques and market places. That too is becoming very rear.

You either do not know what you are saying or you don’t believe it,’’ President Buhari said.

He said that Nigeria is capable of surmounting its security challenges as he appealed to the international community to focus more attention on addressing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and unemployment in Nigeria.

“We are addressing the situation (unemployment) by turning to agriculture and solid minerals because we are lucky to be blessed with arable land, water and resources,” he stated.
