• Boko Haram insurgents in Jos – Troops

Residents of Jos, the Plateau state capital have been alerted by the federal troops known as Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) of the presence of Boko Haram in the city.

The federal troops reported that the insurgents may be planning to detonate bombs through suicide bombers or car bomb at crowded places like markets, relaxation centers, motor parks and schools.

There have been several cases of multiple bomb explosions in the city in recent past which led to the deaths of hundreds of residents including car bombs, suicide bombing and throwing of grenades.

The last of such attacks was during the last Ramadan fast which killed many worshippers listening to sermon at Dilimi Mosque Jos.

In a statement released in Jos on Sunday by the spokesman of the OPSH, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, the federal troop has called on citizens of the state to be security conscious and tighten security around public places.

Boko Haram: Army chief decries troops’ attitude in Geidam

    • Says deadline to end insurgency achievable

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has condemned the attitude of troops deployed to Geidam in the fight against terrorist group, Boko Haram

He stated this in Lagos at the weekend during his maiden tour of units and commands under the 81 Division of the Army.

Referring to the poor performance of the troops, Buratai emphasised the need for serious review of the attitude of the troops towards the ongoing war.

He noted that despite having the necessary weapons and equipment that will enable them protect themselves, civilians and properties, the troops failed to attack the insurgents.

He said: “About two or three days ago, I was in Geidam and the attitude of our troops calls for a serious review, because they have the equipment, weapons, everything they require to protect themselves and indeed citizens that are there, the whole community and villages around. But they just went and sat down without adopting the proper battle procedures.

“I have given them a very strong warning; and some of you may find yourselves around that area. If you go there, you must behave very professionally. You must apply all the battle principles that you have been taught, deploy the weapons and equipment properly.”

While fielding questions from reporters after addressing his soldiers, Buratai said he went to Geidam to see things for himself, while assuring that the loopholes identified are being addressed.

“Immediately after my visit, the following day (Friday) they (terrorists) attempted to move into Geidam, but the soldiers stood up and conquered that attack. They pursued them and the terrorists have been on the run.

“So, that issue has been addressed and we want to maintain that capability to ensure we repeal and equally pursue them to wherever they go to,” he assured.

Buratai also warned army personnel to remain apolitical, stressing that their moves were being monitored and anyone found romancing politicians will be dealt with accordingly.

The army chief also insisted that the December deadline given by President Muhammadu Buhari for the military to end Boko Haram was achievable.

He noted, “Fighting insurgency requires a lot of resources and initiatives. The renewed commitment of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, increased equipment that we have been providing to the troops, increased troops with the deployment of Special Forces in key and critical areas have contributed in motivating the troops.

“We are addressing their welfare needs as at when due, so all these contributed and it is changing the tide against the terrorists. We will definitely meet the target.”

Boko Haram: Transport union to collaborate with government

The Chairman of Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Lagos State Branch, Alhaji Mohammed Musa, has spoken of the willingness of the transport body to partner with the National Union of Roads and Transport workers (NURTW) in the fight against insurgency.

Musa made this known to journalists at the weekend during the flag off campaign for the elections of the Motorcyclists and Riders Association executive members in Lagos State. He stated that this has become imperative, as every hand must be on deck to assist the federal government in its efforts to tackle the menace of Boko Haram and insurgency in the North East.

While pledging to work with his NURTW counterpart, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, to establish a taskforce in collaboration with the government and security agencies to ensure adequate security at all motor parks, Musa added, “An arrangement has been put to place to work with my counterpart in NURTW, Lagos State branch to form a taskforce in partnership with the government and security agencies to keep watch on people coming and going into our parks.

“This would checkmate activities in our motor parks; we would also know who drops a particular load within the park and the content. The recent unfortunate incidents in motor parks in some states where lives and millions of properties were lost is sad and totally unacceptable.”

Musa, who is also the Deputy National President (Administration) of RTEAN, further disclosed that as part of measures to eradicate violence in motor parks, several reforms have been introduced to sensitise members on the issue, adding that the incidence of violence has been reduced to the barest minimum since he was elected as the Chairman of the transport body in October last year.

He said: “I became chairman of RTEAN, Lagos State branch in October last year and between then and now, we have introduced reforms to forestall violence among our members”

“This would checkmate activities in our motor parks. We would know also know who drop a particular load within the parks and its content.”

  • Why Nigerians must support Army

    Why Nigerians must support Army

I just watched the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai on Television after he visited troops in Geidam Community of Yobe State, as a result of Wednesday’s attack by Boko Haram militants who over-ran the military.

Tn the attack, the insurgents killed 3 soldiers, carted away many weapons and ammunition abandoned by the military on the run and looted mostly food and petroleum products from the popular Wednesday market.

I was particularly touched by the honesty of General Buratai who was obviously angry with the troops who had run away from Geidam town.

In his words, the General said “How can you allow these criminals over-run you? How can you run away from this rag-tag and untrained criminals? You allowed them to operate here for 12hours unchallenged. You refused to come back until they withdrew.”

On the surface, the words of COAS Buratai are very hurtful to the image of the Nigerian Army but this is the painful reality today.

The Nigerian Army seems to be overwhelmed and demoralized.

The image of the Nigerian Army has suffered so much damages in the eyes of Nigerians and the international community mainly because of the way they have handled the war against Boko Haram in the past 3years.

These insurgents have repeatedly, for over 2years, embarked upon massive propaganda using social media to demonize the Nigerian Army.

They have through so many online propaganda and campaigns portrayed our army as a weak and a cowardly army that cannot stand to fight.

Many online media and personalities helped the insurgents to achieve their propaganda campaigns either intentionally or otherwise.

It is important for us to know that all wars are fought both on ground, air, sea, land and in the minds of all parties involved in the war and most importantly in the psyche of the citizens. To win this war against Boko Haram, we must conquer the minds of Boko Haram with fear, win over our allies and friends by convincing them our army is capable and reliable and also boost the confidence of our troops through citizenry support since the morale of our troops are boosted when they know the citizens of their country are solidly behind them.

The Nigerian Army and our other security agencies are our last line of defense against these barbarians since we cannot defend ourselves against their satanic attacks. If not for the efforts of the Nigerian Military and our other security agencies, these barbarians would have taken over the entire nation, enforced their barbaric and misguided religious tenets on all of us, restricted us to their false Sambisa sharia law system, forced our Sisters into sex slavery like they have done to the Chibok Girls and make us live in perpetual fear of terror.
We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us.”  ― Winston S. Churchill
If not for the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, many Muslims and Christians across our country would not be able to go to the mosque on Fridays or the church on Sundays.

Boko Haram seeks to destroy Christianity and Islam and do not wish any of us well, Nigerians, irrespective of religious consideration, party affiliation and tribal affinity, must realize that Boko Haram are our common enemies and not just the Nigerian Army’s.

The Army means well and are doing their very best to protect us all despite the overwhelming odds, they need our support at all times.

This was what the opposition party in the days of President Goodluck Jonathan was admonished with but they refused to listen. They politicized everything.

Sadly, they politicized the attempt by the former president to list Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO); they politicized the procurement of arms to prosecute the war; they politicized appointments of service chiefs; they politicized State of Emergency in the North East; they politicized Chibok and turned it into a campaign tool against Jonathan.

The PDP-led Federal Government and the Nigerian Army, for inexplicable reasons, chose to see issues as an appendage of the PDP rather than the federal government.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, now governor of Kaduna State and many leading APC chieftains then referred to the Nigerian army as Jonathan’s army. They politicized everything as regards the fight against the deadly sect.

At some point in time, their presidential candidate now President Muhammadu Buhari called an attack against Boko haram an attack against Northern Nigeria.

If the political class and all Nigerians had supported the then Federal Government and our security agencies in the fight against Boko Haram, may be we would have long won the war.

The politicization of the war against Boko Haram caused more damage than good on the whole nation. Those who saw the war against Boko Haram as an avenue for them to keep scoring needless and cheap political points in the North, sabotaged the efforts of our security agencies.

They got the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to issue endless press releases kicking against the ban on Boko Haram and the plan of the then FG to list Boko Haram as an FTO which was needed to get arms from our allies to effectively prosecute the war.

And finally, when Boko Haram was listed as an FTO, they began another campaign against the army saying former Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Ihejirika was also a sponsor of Boko Haram and was the one supplying arms to Boko Haram on the orders of former president Jonathan.

Their allegations were so scary and consistent that our allies became skeptical of supplying us with arms, and the United States and Israel refused selling arms to us to fight the deadly sect.

We had to turn to Russia for help. As if that was not enough, the former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako even did the unbelievable, accusing the FG of genocide against Northern Nigeria and suggested that federal troops were the ones dropping arms for Boko Haram with helicopters.

Furthermore, it was Mallam El-Rufai that built a propaganda foundation which suggested that former President Jonathan was the one sponsoring Boko Haram against the North.

He also tried to bring in the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ex-Niger Delta Militants and others as possible sponsors of the terrorist group. El-rufai ensured he poisoned the minds of young people from the North and many of his followers on social media against the then president Jonathan by maintaining this lie. He further justified this lie when he spoke at Chatham House by presenting a table to justify his propaganda theory.

The questions all Nigerians must now begin to ask those who refused to support the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan and our security agencies in their fight against Boko Haram then and who are suddenly supporting the Federal Government and the army now is, what has changed? Is Goodluck Jonathan still the one sponsoring Boko Haram with the help of his Niger Delta ex-militants? Is CAN still the one sponsoring Boko Haram? Explanations were offered to APC on why they should see the battle against the terrorists as a national issue rather than treated as a political one just for parochial and mundane reasons, that where national security is concerned, we must not play politics with it but they did not listen.

They threw caution to the wind and were playing loudly to the gallery. Now see where that has gotten us to, in just 120 days of president Buhari taking over, the deadly group has killed more than 1,300 Nigerians and bombed Abuja twice.

The message here is this, the enemy is Boko Haram, not the Federal Government, not president Buhari, and definitely not our ever caring Nigerian Army and the security agencies who daily spend their days in the heat and their nights in the cold while the rest of us spend times with families in the comfort of our homes.

The military deserves our respect and support as they remain in the forefront in the fight against these barbarians.

The fund which also promised to assist the National Hospital, where most of the victims are receiving treatment to build a burnt theatre to handle server burnt.

‎The fund was put together by the last administration to assist the victims of activities of Boko Haram.

Gen. Danjuma who led members of his team to the National Hospital to commensurate with victims of the Friday bomb blast in Kuje and Nyanya both in Abuja, also revealed that the fund has given out N500 million since its inception.

He said: “the pledge is part of the efforts at strengthening the medical institutions to be able to respond to emergencies.

“We are going to assist in the feeding of the victims and also we are going to help in the procurement of medications that the hospital may be lacking.

“We are also assisting in the area of housing and accommodation, schools and also pregnant women.”

When asked if there were areas that the committee would be assisting the victims afterwards, he said “we would decide in consultation with the hospital.”

The retired General also maintained that the work of the committee is to support institutions to be able to treat victims.

Explaining the intervention of the committee, VSF Executive Director, Dr. Agbonye Ochoche said that the fund was working assiduously to empower medical institutions in the country.

He said: “we would be assisting the hospital to upgrade the burnt theatre in the trauma centre.

“Right now a total of N12 million has been pledged to the hospital that we will give immediately to support the hospital. That we will give immediately to support the trauma unit. (The Details of the management of that we will discuss with the hospital.

The support fund he also revealed has also given considerable support to seven medical hospitals in the North-East, which according to him “has helped them to respond to emergency cases like this when it is ready and there is no question of anything is out of stock or no fund.”

This gesture he also assured “will be extended to other hospitals that are located to areas that are prone to attacks like this.”

He explained further that the primary concern of the fund “is to support the hospital to enable victims have complete recovery before leaving the hospitals, which is the medical component that we are looking at.

“We have other programmes for other categories of victims‎. Much of our focus is to help them recover completely ‎without reference to whether they have financial capacity or not but as much as possible provide all that they might have within the limit of medical facilities in the country.

“Our focus remains to empower the institutions (hospitals) to be able to deliver the best possible medical care to the victims.”

Raise panel to find sect’s backers

The Northern States Governors’ Forum has inaugurated a committee to identify the sponsors of the Boko Haram sect and ensure their prosecution.

The Chairman of the Forum, Governor Kashim Shettima who inaugurated the committee at Kaduna State House, Kawo, on Friday, also said the days of the sect are numbered considering the dislodgement of its members from their strongholds by the military.

Shettima said the committee which would operate under the aegis of the Committee of Attorneys-General and Commissioners of Justice of the 19 northern states had the mandate to review the criminal justice system in the region as agreed by the northern governors during their last meeting.

He said the inauguration of the committee has become imperative considering the complex problems of insurgency, cattle rustling, armed robbery, inciting preaching, and kidnapping confronting the northern states, adding that the panel has two months to complete its assignment.

He said: “The committee should also look at the condemnable activities of the so called sponsors of the insurgency and come up with legally pragmatic, appropriate and proportionate punishment. The committee should also focus specifically on parents who because of pittance sacrifice their children as suicide bombers. Such parents must be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Specifically, the Borno State Governor said the committee should conduct a “thorough and meticulous review of the penal code as it exists with a view to pointing out its weaknesses and constraints in the overall administration of Criminal Justice System in the Northern states. ”

  • Beware of Boko Haram packaged bombs, DHQ warns

Members of the public should beware of the Boko Haram sect’s newly-devised lethal combination of packaged bombs, the Defence Headquarters has warned.

Referring to some of such cluster bombs being recovered in Adamawa state by Nigerian Army Engineers, the Defence Headquarters stated that   some of such items packaged in pots or metal containers are aimed towards simultaneously wreaking havoc on many targets, such as columns of vehicles, marketplaces, places of worship or large concentration of troops.

In a statement issued by the DHQ’s spokesman, Colonel Rabe Abubakar on Thursday, he emphasized the deceptive nature of the deadly bombs and urged citizens to report discovery of any such objects instead of going near it.

“The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to inform Nigerians living in the North-East and any other parts of the country to keep a lookout for cluster bombs sometimes called ‘scatter bombs’ as the Nigerian Army Engineers serving in Adamawa State have recovered some caches of these bombs in the contested areas in recent time.

“The military high command has discovered that the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) in the areas have used such lethal instruments over time to push their callous terrorist cause.

“For easy identification, it is important to note that cluster bombs are bombs that house sub munitions, that is, smaller explosives contained in individual cases.

“These bombs are used against large areas containing many targets, such as columns of vehicles, marketplaces, places of worship or large troop concentration as the case may be.

  • ACF backs Buhari on stolen funds recovery

ACF backs Buhari on stolen funds recovery

President Muhammadu Buhari has again received support from Arewa Consultative Forum, (ACF), on the steps taken so far by his administration to recover stolen public funds.

The ACF described the President’s steps as appropriate and timely to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of stolen public funds, saying the method would “sanitize the system and revive prudence and discipline in the conduct of public officers”.

The northern socio-cultural group also applauded the United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, France and other western nations for helping Nigeria to track down, recover and repatriate stolen funds.

The ACF Board of Trustees headed by elder Statesman, Mallam Adamu Fika made the observations on Thursday in Kaduna at the end of its meeting with members from the 19 northern states of the country.

According to Mallam  Fika, who is also the Wazirin Fika in a statement: “The meeting therefore applauded the international cooperation and support the Federal Government is receiving in the effort to recover and repatriate all stolen funds”.

The ACF said it noted with ‘dismay recent embarrassing and divisive statements from some elder statesmen which are capable of causing disaffection among the various components of Nigeria and called on such elements to employ civility and caution in their utterances for peace and harmony to prevail in our fledgeling democracy’.

“It (ACF) was particularly unhappy with the activities of MASSOB and other ethnic agitators who are fond of calling for disintegration of the country after 55 years of independence”, the ACF lamented.

The statement reads: “ACF reaffirmed its belief in one Nigeria and the need for all hands to be on deck to move the nation forward.

“That the effort of the Federal Government in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency through the joint multinational military task force of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, global counter terrorism support by the international community and the gallantry of our military and other security agencies is most highly commended.

“It particularly salute the Military for repelling the recent attack on our troops at Goniri in Yobe state on Tuesday 6th October, 2015 where many terrorists were killed and dangerous  weapons recovered.

“It noted that the success being recorded by the military and other security agencies in combating insurgency in the northeast must have been as a result of the support and encouragement from the Federal Government and the determination of the field commanders to end the insurgency within the time frame given by Mr. President.

“The meeting also condemned the rampant kidnapping and ritual killings of innocent people and urged the security agencies to not only track down perpetrators of such crime but ensure that they are brought to book.

“That the steps taken by the Federal Government to investigate, prosecute, perpetrators and repatriate stolen public are not only appropriate and timely but will also sanitize the system and revive prudence and discipline in the conduct of public officers.

“The meeting therefore applauded the international cooperation and support the Federal Government is receiving in the effort to recover and repatriate all stolen funds.

“That to boost economic activities and generate employment opportunities, the meeting appealed to the state governments to directly channel Federal allocations to the Local Government Councils to enable them execute projects that have direct bearing on the welfare and development of the people rather than the use of joint accounts that have in most cases been a conduit pipe for misapplication and abuse of state funds.

“It urged State governments to respect the constitutional autonomy of the local government councils for grassroots development.

“The meeting also called upon all tiers of government to address the issue of payment of back log of domestic debts especially local contractors bills, workers and pensioners emoluments which will equally revive the economic activities and make it to thrive.”

  • 18 killed in Boko Haram multiple attacks

18 killed in Boko Haram multiple attacks

Boko Haram struck again yesterday in Yobe State capital Damaturu, killing no fewer than 18 people in multiple attacks.

But troops killed about 100 fleeing sect fighters at Goniri, also in the state.

Yobe police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin said the Damaturu attack also left eight people injured.

He said: “What happened this morning was caused by three suicide bombers who detonated their devices at three different places.

“There were two suicide attacks in different places at Buhari Estate while the third one took place at a Fulani settlement behind Zanna Zakariya Housing Estate –  all in Damaturu.

“The first blast at the Fulani settlement killed 11 people while the two others at Buhari Estate killed six people (four at the shopping centre and two near a community mosque) and one at the hospital.”

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency management Agency (SEMA), Musa Idi Jidawa, said the attack was carried out by some teenagers in three places.

“I can confirm to you that so far, we got 18 people that have been confirmed dead. The number of injured persons is 10,” he said.

The army said troops of the 120 Task Force Battalion in Yobe killed more than 100 fleeing terrorists at Goniri. The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman, in a statement, said seven soldiers died while nine others were injured  when the terrorists attempted to invade the military base at Goniri early yesterday.

“The fleeing Boko Haram terrorists, in a desperation and to create an impression that they remain relevant, early today made a futile attempt on 120 Task Force Battalion troops at Goniri, Yobe State.

“During the encounter, our gallant troops successfully repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualty on the invaders, as all of them were killed.

“More than 100 terrorists died but unfortunately however, seven of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price while defending our father land. One officer and eight soldiers were also wounded.’’

According to the statement, the troops recovered arms, ammunition and other equipment from the terrorists.

The arms and ammunition recovered include, one general purpose machine gun; two rocket propelled grenades, nine AK-47 rifles and belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunition.

Wires used for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), seven Primed IEDs, various types of spanners and a torch light were also recovered.

The statement said the troops had consolidated on the encounter and would continue blocking any fleeing terrorist using the Nigerian Air Force aerial bombardment and other troops artillery fire.

The statement stated that troops of 21 Brigade on fighting patrol from Bama to Ngurosoye destroyed Boko Haram terrorists’ camps along that axis.

It stated that soldiers on patrol came across some of the terrorists’ hideouts that also served as fabricating area for IEDs and the terrorists’ training area along Bama-Kawuri axis.

The statement said the army with the support of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies would not relent in the determined effort of defeating Boko Haram insurgents.

  • With attacks on soft targets, fleeing Boko Haram insurgents determined to go down fighting

With attacks on soft targets, fleeing Boko Haram insurgents determined to go down fighting

The military has 86 more days to deliver on its mandate to crush Boko Haram terrorists. But, with pockets of attacks by the fleeing insurgents, the fundamentalists may be sending a message to the 8,700 man strong Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) that the battle  will not be a walkover, writes BUNMI OGUNMODEDE

SINCE the Presidential marching order to the military to crush Boko Haram terrorists by December, the military has been on the offensive, taking the battle to the insurgents in their hideouts. Many of the camps have been destroyed by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) drawn from five Lake Chad Basin countries of Nigeria, Chad, Niger Cameroon and Republic of Benin.

Hundreds of civilian victims, rescued from such camps after military raids, have been taken to the various Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camps in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

Unlike before when insurgents had all the luxury to map out coordinated attacks on government institutions, markets, churches, schools, police stations and military bases, members of the terrorist group who are fleeing their camps have been attacking soft spots. Uncomfortable with the heat being turned on them by troops, scores of the insurgents have been surrendering to the military in Borno State, the epicenter of the insurgency in the Northeast.

The counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, code-named: “Operation Lafiya Dole”, introduced by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Gen. Buratai Tukur Yusuf, and other Service chiefs have been yielding results.

According to the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, more terrorists and fighters are willing to surrender to the military. He listed the new strategies employed to include: sustained offensive operations; pre-emptive air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF)  and routes blocking by ground troops all geared towards constricting and snuffing out the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Many of the terrorists that willingly surrendered painted images of mass panic and hysteria among their erstwhile colleagues who are feeling the noose tightening on their necks with the relentless efforts of troops and renewed vigour in operations inspired by the personal leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS),” Col. Usman said at a news conference.

“Terrorists also seem to have an inkling of what happens to surrendered suspects as regards screening and de-radicalisation of innocent ones among them,” the army spokesman added.

He said that the Army, in conjunction with the NAF and other security agencies would continue to devise and implement effective strategies to bring Boko Haram’s terrorism to a speedy end.

It will also continue, he added, to receive surrendering suspects and assured innocent ones among them that “surrender” is the only option open to them.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to also appreciate the great support and information it receives from well meaning citizens,” he said.

Besides routing the militants from their enclaves, the military has been cutting off their food and fuel supply channels as well as arresting some of their financiers – all to weaken and decapitate the militants, who have killed more than 15,000 people since they went violent in their agitations against western education in 2009.

But, the recalcitrant fundamentalists among the insurgents appear determined not to go down alone. There have been pockets of attacks on soft targets and, unfortunately, the attackers have turned out to be young girls, fuelling fears that the abducted Chibok schoolgirls may have been radicalised and indoctrinated.

More than 200 girls were abducted by insurgents from their dormitory in a government-run girls-only secondary school in Chibok, Borno State some 542 days ago. Since their abduction in April, last year, nothing has been heard of the girls, which the insurgents threatened to marry off or sell into slavery. The Federal Government has renewed its promise to rescue the girls and reunite them with their parents.

Early yesterday, some terrorists made a desperate attempt to invade the Buhari Housing Estate in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.  They later clashed with the Task Force Battalion troops stationed in Goniri, Yobe State. With multiple bomb explosions, they killed nine soldiers and 18 civilians. Many residents were seriously injured in the multiple attacks, but the insurgents suffered most. The troops killed more than 100 terrorists in the clash, the army said. There was no independent confirmation of this claim.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS),  said the military was on top of the situation, adding that everything would be done to forestall a reoccurrence.

Though the identities of the nine soldiers and the 18 civilians could not be ascertained yesterday, the military casualties may have been members of the 8,700-member MNJTF fighting insurgency in the Northeast.

On August 13, when he decorated Service chiefs with their new ranks at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Buhari gave them a three-month deadline to crush Boko Haram – the sect that has given Nigeria and its neighbours horrors.

Gen Olonisakin and Lt.-General Buratai were decorated as the CDS and COAS . , –Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas and Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar were decorated as Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Chief of Air Staff (CAS).

Buhari, as the Commander-in-Chief, noted that the officers were qualified for the appointments, urging them to end terrorism by December

He said: “Rightly, the armed forces have been in the vanguard of the fight against terrorism. While commending the efforts of the armed forces so far, you need to brace and continue to team up with other stakeholders to come up with a well coordinated joint effort, which will bring a desired end to this insurgency within three months.

“In the course of carrying out this assignment, you must be accountable for all men and equipment placed under your command. Your troops’ welfare must be uppermost in your mind. Take care of them and make available what is due to them.

“Concerted efforts should also be made to make judicious use of resources that are available to you in search for solution to these challenges.

“On our own part, we shall be ready to give you the needed resources to achieve this feat. You will recall I have been to several countries with the sole aim of canvassing for global support to eliminate terrorism from Nigeria.”

The CDS, who responded on behalf of other Service chiefs, said they would not let down the nation just as he asked for the cooperation of all to defeat the sect.

He later told State House reporters that they would try their best.

He said: “We are already strategising on how to handle most of the challenges since we were appointed. And all these strategies we are beginning to put them in place, so we’ll just put in more efforts to ensure that we achieve the desire of the President.”

On if three months was enough to crush Boko Haram, Gen. Olonisakin said: “The President has given a presidential directive.”

The COAS has shown leadership by example, visiting the battle fronts regularly to boost troops’ morale, the latest being on Sallah Day, when Gen. Buratai relocated to Borno to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir with troops. He has also recommended all those involved in the war against terror for automatic promotion.

The nation is not in want of international support in the battle against terror. France pledged military assistance to the MNJTF. It made the announcement during President Muhammadu Buhari’s  three-day visit to talk to France where he held talks about defence, security, trade and investments with his counterpart François Hollande.

Hollande made the pledge after a press conference with Buhari held at the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris. He said France will provide the MNJTF with intelligence and equipment to help defeat the terrorists.

“France’s assistance to Nigeria against Boko Haram focuses mainly on intelligence operations,” a source close to Hollande was quoted by AFP as saying.

United States President Barack Obama also pledged more support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and corruption.

Though the regional offensive has recorded some success, such as the recapture of key towns in Borno and the destruction of camps but nothing much has been hard about the expansive Sambisa Forest, the stronghold of the insurgents in Borno State. In a Sallah Day video posted on the internet, members of the insurgents were seen feasting. The military says it is investigating the video.  Boko Haram Commander Abubakar Shekau did not appear in the video.

He was also missing in a new video released by the sect yesterday. The video which was posted on BBC’s Twitter handle, showed members of the deadly sect pledging allegiance to Islamic State, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

The spokesman of the insurgents, however, said the sect remained under the leadership of Shekau, who was last seen in February.

He also rejected claims that several insurgents had surrendered to the military. The insurgent also said it was untrue that the army had released some women and children abducted by the sect.

Truck loads of victims, rescued from Boko Haram captivity are being taken on daily basis for reintegration at the IDPs.

However, a source urged for sincerity in the war against terror. The source said a distinction should be made between the rescue of victims and the relocation of villagers by the military. The source said those relocated from their community and resettled at the IDPs to avoid possible Boko Haram raid should not be mistaken as captives.

According to the source, “if troops kill scores of insurgents, it is proper to seize from the terrorists weapons commensurate to the number of Boko Haram casualties. You can’t kill 70 insurgents and all you seize from them is seven AK 47. We all know that Boko Haram don’t fight with sticks, they fight with sophisticated weapons.”

Recovered from terrorists who fell to the troops’ superior fire power yesterday were: one general purpose machine; two rocket-propelled grenades; nine AK-47 rifles; belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunitions; wires used for IEDs, seven primed IEDs; different types of spanners and a torchlight.

The CDS, who was on tour of military formations and units in Rivers State,  said the military is re-strategising to meet the December deadline set by the President to end insurgency.

“We are currently working on the December deadline by re-addressing our strategies to ensure that we meet the target,” Olonisakin said in Port Harcourt yesterday.

According to him, the visit to Port Harcourt was to ascertain the readiness and preparedness of troops to combat terrorism and insecurity in the country.
