The Police Command in Lagos State has debunked a publication in some newspapers dated April 17, 2025 asserting that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects have been apprehended in Lagos.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin refuted this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

He said that following the publication, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed an immediate investigation into the report to ascertain the true position of the claim.

“The outcome of the investigation reveals that there is nowhere throughout Lagos State that the group mentioned in the report – Boko Haram – were seen or sighted or arrested.

“Furthermore, in the trailer park communities mentioned, the leaders, operators, and drivers in the indicated places in the report clarified to the police that there were no such elements of Boko Haram seen or arrested in those localities.

“The command, notwithstanding, deployed surveillance police detectives, the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department (SID), and other formations of the Force to the mentioned places for the purpose of verification of the claim.

“No one confirmed the presence or arrest of such group members as reported in the write-up throughout Lagos State.

“Therefore, the report in its entirety is false, malicious, and ill-intended to cause fear and apprehension in the minds of the public,” he said.

Hundeyin enjoined residents to disregard and discountenance the write-up as untrue and a figment of the imagination of the writer which was very unfortunate and despicable and should be outrightly ignored.

“Members of the public are encouraged by the Commissioner of Police to go about their duties and other means of livelihood without fear or apprehension, ” he said.

The image maker enjoined the media not to allow the use of their esteemed publications to incite fake news, and outright falsehood that could jeopardise the peace and tranquility being enjoyed in the state.

“The writer of the story is advised to verify facts and truth of any information before going to the press,” he said.

The spokesperson assured residents of their safety and the police commitment to protection of lives and property in the state.

He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or call the control room on 08063299264.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) has renewed its call for heightened security across Nigeria, particularly in light of the renewed activities of Boko Haram and continued attacks in Plateau and Borno states.

Condemning the persistent and senseless killings of innocent citizens, the Foundation described the violence as unacceptable and called for urgent action to protect lives and restore peace in affected communities.

Speaking during an interactive session with select journalists at the Foundation’s headquarters in Kaduna, Director General Engr. Abubakar Gambo Umar stressed the importance of strengthening national security.

“I urge us all to recognise the necessity of enhanced security measures, especially to address the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Borno State as well as permanently uprooting banditry across the nation,” he said. “The safety of our citizens should be a priority, and we must call upon our leaders to ensure that effective strategies are implemented to protect our communities.”

On a more positive note, Umar commended government efforts aimed at reducing the cost of food commodities.

He noted that the initiative is critical in easing the economic burden on families and called for continued progress in that direction.

“As we gather here today, we cannot ignore the socio-political climate of our country. We are witnessing troubling attempts to sow disunity and disharmony among our citizens for political gain. This is a moment to reflect on the importance of solidarity in our diversity.

“Moreover, the recent killings in Plateau State have brought about a wave of sadness across our nation, resulting in the needless loss of precious lives. We must collectively denounce violence and work towards peaceful coexistence,” he stated.

“Hitherto, they were holding territories especially in the north eastern part of Nigeria—local governments, towns, cities—now its no longer the case.

“They’ve largely dissipated; they’ve ran into the bushes and coming to take some soft targets.

“We’re not saying we have 100 percent exterminated Boko Haram, but I think that we have degraded Boko Haram significantly for them to pose any significant challenge for us as a country.”

The minister also roped the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) among terrorist organisations that are standing “on their last legs” while adding that security agencies would soon “crush” the Lakurawa group.

Borno Gov concerned over resurgence of Boko Haram attacks

Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has raised concern over resurgence of Boko Haram activities in the State.

The Governor raised the concern during a Special Expanded Security Meeting in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The high-level meeting was attended by the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Maj.-Gen Abubakar Haruna; sector commanders, the Commissioner of Police, other heads of security agencies, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, and other first class traditional rulers in the state.

The Governor described the recent terrorist attacks on military formations in the state as “disheartening” and a “setback in the fragile state of Borno and the North East region.”

He called for a military’s technology upgrade to tackle the activities of Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the state.

Zulum believes that advanced technology was key to bolstering the military’s capacity to combat terrorism ravaging Borno and other neighbouring states.

“More efforts have to be put in place through equipping and deploying of technological warfare to the military to stem the tide of all renewed attacks bedeviling parts of the Sahelian Borno, which shares an international border with three African countries of Chad, Niger, and Cameroon,” he said.

The Governor praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued support to the military and other security agencies to fight insecurity in the country.

Shehu of Borno acknowledged the military’s efforts in fighting Boko Haram and other terror groups in the state.

The Shehu, however, raised concerns over some local government areas still without civil authorities due to the ongoing insurgency.

He appealed to the Federal Government to prioritise the reconstruction of critical road networks, including the Biu-Damboa-Maiduguri, Maiduguri-Dikwa-Ngala, Maiduguri-Monguno-Kukawa, and Biu-Damaturu highways, to enhance security and development of the State.

Solve Boko Haram’s issue in Zabon Gari Damboa first, Karimi advises Ndume

Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) on Tuesday took a swipe at Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South), over the latter’s smattering remarks about President Bola Tinubu and those he described as the President’s “attack dogs”.

Ndume, who appeared as a guest of Arise TV programme “Prime Time” show, criticised what he termed illegality and excesses of government under Tinubu’s leadership.

He warned that Nigeria is standing on the precipice with three budgets running concurrently, huge government borrowing often without the approval of the National Assembly and what he described as gross infraction on the federal character provisions of the Nigerian Constitution with more than 70 percent of Tinubu’s appointees allegedly coming from just the South West.

He also said security is being ignored with the wave of killings of dozens in Plateau State in the aftermath of the tragical occurrences in Edo State and the resurgence of the Boko Haram and ISWAP  in his home state, Borno.

“As a Nigerian, I have the right to voice this out, but Tinubu’s attack dogs will attack me and not the message. It is not personal,” he said.

Reacting, Karimi who like Ndume is a member of

the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate caucus, said rather than playing to the gallery and criticising government, Senator Ndume, as a leader of his people, should go back, liaise with his people on solving Boko Haram problems.

He noted that the country has lost a lot of soldiers and trillions of Naira fighting insurgents in Ndume’s Senatorial District in the last decades.

“In fact I lost one of the young officers, a captain in the Army from my Senatorial District serving in his community three weeks ago.

“Lots of young Nigerians had lost their lives fighting to defend the territorial integrity of our country.

“Over 50 percent of Nigeria’s earnings in the last few years are being expended on fighting insurgency.

“Rather than playing to the gallery and criticising government, Senator Ndume, as a leader of his people, should go back, liaise with his people on solving Boko Haram problems. Every security-related issue has a local solution,” Karimi said.

JUST IN: Suspected Boko Haram insurgents raze villages in Adamawa, loot property

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have launched an attack on Kwapre and surrounding villages in Hong local government area of Adamawa state, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attack began at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, and lasted into the early hours of Wednesday, February 26, during which schools, houses, and businesses were set ablaze and valuable assets were looted.

The village head of Kwapre, Joel Kulaha, and his counterpart from King village, Abalis Jawaja, told our correspondent how the heavily armed terrorists stormed the communities, burning buildings and carting away valuables.

It was gathered that no lives were lost, as residents had been forewarned of the attack and fled their homes before the insurgents arrived.

“We escaped with our lives, but everything we own is gone,” Kulaha lamented.

A source said soldiers stationed in nearby Garaha town responded after some time, engaging the attackers in a gun battle and forcing them to retreat.

However, the intervention came too late to prevent the extensive destruction.

Recall that Kwapre has suffered multiple Boko Haram attacks in the past, as Adamawa remains one of the three northeastern states hardest hit by the insurgency.
