Army sends 760 Boko Haram suspects to Borno govt

The Nigeria Army on Friday said it has transferred 760 suspected Boko Haram members to Borno State Government for reintegration into the society.

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement in Maiduguri.

Nwachikwu said the suspects were handed over to the government at the Bulunkutu State Rehabilitation Centre, Maiduguri.

He disclosed that the suspects were arrested during the ongoing crackdown on the insurgents in the North East by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole.

He said the suspects were cleared after interrogations and investigations by the Joint Intelligence Centre (JIC) of the Theatre Command.

He added that the suspects were handed over to the state government by the Coordinator of the JIC, Brig.-Gen. Abdulrahman Kuliya.

“The JIC has cleared 760 suspects. The crackdown on Boko Haram terrorists is yielding positive results, culminating in significant reduction in terrorists’ activities in the North East,” the statement quoted Kuliya as saying at the forum.

He urged members of the public to provide useful information to security agents on suspicious activities in their communities.

Military has secured North East from insurgents – NAF chief

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said on Friday the military has successfully stabilised and secured the North East from Boko Haram insurgents.

Abubakar stated this at a graduation ceremony for 150 participants of skills acquisition and vocational training programme in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The training was organised by the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA).

Sadique attributed the success to recent air and ground bombardments of Boko Haram stronghold as well as combined efforts of other members of the Armed Forces.

“We are not aware of any national security issue in the North East. What I am aware of is that we have done substantially well in stabilising and securing the North East.

“Looking at Maiduguri itself, you will never believe that there was any security challenge there. This is so because there is no security challenge.

“What we are just doing is to mop up what is still remaining (insurgents). We are doing substantially well and making substantial progress.

“We had the Operation Ruwan Wuta – a 10-day bombardment day-and-night operation that substantially reduced suicide bombings and eliminated organised attacks by insurgents,” he said.

The NAF chief said the military has recorded successes in the North East and in other regions of the country since the current administration took office in 2015.

He commended NAFOWA for its support to the less privileged, particularly the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

Troops Kill 4 Boko Haram members in Borno

Four Boko Haram members were on Thursday killed by troops operating in the Northwest of the country, Nigerian Army Spokesperson, Brigadier General Sani Usman has said.
One of the insurgents was killed in an ambush laid by soldiers along Firgi-Pulka road in Bama local government of Borno state, while three others were eliminated as they disguised as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with the aim of penetrating a military barrier.
He said a major disaster was averted by the troops in one of the operations as they prevented the Boko Haram members from carrying out a suicide mission.
Brig. General Usman, in a statement, said the troops of the 151 and 202 Battalion of 21 brigade and the crack troops of 22 Brigade of operation Lafiya Dole both displayed gallantry in the operations.
He said: ” The Troops of 151 and 202 Battalions of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army, under Operation LAFIYA DOLE in furtherance of clearance and blockade Operation DEEP PUNCH II in separate but well-coordinated attacks simultaneously on Wednesday, 4th October 2017 at about 10:00am laid ambush on unsuspecting Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) along Firgi-Pulka road in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
“The Troops engaged the terrorists with a heavy fire causing the terrorists to abandon their weapons and flee in disarray with Gun Shot wounds. In the first instance upon exploitation, troops recovered from the ambush site one General Multi-Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and one motorcycle.
“They also successfully discovered and safely detonated an unexploded ordnance. However, the troops followed with a hot pursuit, neutralized one terrorist and recovered 6 bundles of zinc.
“In the same vein, crack troops of 22 Brigade of Operation LAFIYA DOLE displayed gallantry on 4th October at about 6:05pm by intercepting 3 Boko Haram terrorists disguised as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and trying to infiltrate a barrier.
” The vigilant troops engaged the suicide bombers forcing them to hastily detonate their suicide vest. The troops recovered 2 AK-47 rifles, 2 magazines with several rounds of ammunition and amongst other items.
“The troops’ action saved what would have been another evil machination of BHTs ploy to utilize suicide bombing to inflict heavy casualties on soft targets”.
  • Nigerians united to defeat Boko Haram – FG

Nigerians united to defeat Boko Haram – FG

The Federal Government says Nigerians from are united in their resolve to defeat the Boko Haram terrorist group.

Amb. Hussein Abdullahi, former Under-Secretary, Regions and International Organisations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated this while delivering Nigeria’s statement on ‘Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism’ at the UN headquarters, New York.

Abdullahi regretted that Nigeria was confronted with the challenge of terrorism as manifested in the brutality of Boko Haram activities against the population.

He said, however, the Nigerian Government introduced many measures to fight the terrorist group from different fronts and in compliance with human rights obligations in the fight against terrorism.

“In August, 2016 President Muhammadu Buhari launched the revised National Counter Terrorism Strategy ( NACTEST ) and urged Nigerians to team up to win the psychological battle against terrorism.

“The President called for multi-sectoral collaboration and urged all government establishments to cue into NACTEST for maximum achievements.

“The revised strategy was meant to confront the dynamism of the perpetrators and involve all stakeholders in the battle by encouraging Nigerians to unite against terror in spite of their religious, tribal and political leanings.

“Since the president’s launch of this revised National Counter Terrorism Strategy, Nigerians have equipped themselves psychologically to win the war against the terrorist group.

“The strategy succeeded in uniting Nigerians from all walks of life towards defeating Boko Haram.

“It also encourages religious leaders to use their various places of worship to enlighten their followers through change of mindset to embrace morality and love of God,” he said.

Abdullahi said with the measures taken by Nigerians and the Federal Government in confronting the Boko Haram terrorist organisation head-on, their activities had been completely degraded.

“Nigerian forces have been able to clear Boko Haram out of many areas in the northeast by reclaiming territories captured by the organisation and restoring peace and stability in the affected states.

“Today, residents in the North-Eastern states now move about their daily businesses in relative safety,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria has trained and equipped the military forces in counterterrorism and counter-insurgency on subjects ranging from urban patrol to unarmed combat and humanitarian law.

He said the Special Forces of the Nigerian military had been training a mobile strike team of some officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps and the Nigerian Police.

“As additional measure, Nigeria has developed huge capacity for the prompt and timely prosecution of Boko Haram suspects.

“This has been made possible by the establishment of a Complex Case Group to specifically address all terrorist-related matters.

“The Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force of the UN has successfully trained many government officials in the areas of human rights, rule of law and counter-terrorism,” he said.

The Nigerian official also said that there was a programme for de-radicalisation, rehabilitation, reorientation and re-integration for repentant Boko Haram suspects.

“In order to assist the victims of Boko Haram, government initiated a Victims Support Fund and the Presidential Initiative for the North East as well as the Safe Schools Initiative.

“These initiatives have facilitated the provision of humanitarian relief, socio-economic stabilisation and resettlement of persons displaced by the terror organization.

“It is remarkable to note that Nigeria has indeed recorded significant progress in the fight against terrorism through international cooperation from some friendly countries around the world,” Abdullahi said.

He pointed out the closer cooperation Nigeria enjoyed with its neighbours,  Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic, within the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission to form a Multinational Joint Task Force ( MNJTF ).

“Consistent with our faith in the need for a collective fight against terrorism, I like to re-affirm Nigeria’s commitment to work closely with all UN counter-terrorism entities.

“These include the United Nations Centre for Counter Terrorism as well as the Centre and the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force,” Abdullahi said.

Days of Boko Haram’s menace over – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Tukur Buratai, said on Wednesday that the military is now on the verge of completely routing out Boko Haram terrorists and other criminal elements across the country, insisting that their operations have been contained.

He, however, said it is important for the media to support the military in its ongoing campaigns to secure the nation.

According to Buratai, the misunderstanding and misconception by various human rights organisations and journalists about the ongoing military operations in the country will be a thing of the past once the narratives about military operations take a positive dimension.

The army chief made the remarks while declaring open a two-day Media Workshop and Second/Third Quarters Directorate of Army Public Relations Study Period 2017 with the theme: “Enhancing Human Rights during Internal Security Operations Through Effective Information Management.”

Buratai, who was represented by the Commander of Army Garrison Headquarters, Major Gen. John Malu said: “I am particularly delighted that this study period is coming at this time that the nation and the military are at a very critical phase of various security challenges affecting our nation.

“It is critical since the military is on the verge of completely routing out Boko Haram terrorists and other criminals from the nation’s territory. This comes with a very important role for the media and the DAPR tasked within the information management of the Nigerian Army.

“It is pertinent to state that the Nigerian Army in conjunction with other security agencies had reached a very important stage in the war against terrorists, having contained their operations to desperate, albeit murderous, suicide attacks and attacks on soft targets with a few futile attempts to portray themselves as a coherent force.

“We will continue to engage and degrade them up until they are completely no more. We are determined to achieve this within a shortest possible time.

“At this point, let me call on citizens of our nation, particularly human rights activist and media practitioners to partner with the Nigerian Army and the DAPR in the collective effort to bring to an end the menace of various security challenges affecting the nation.

“The reportage and editorial dimensions taken by journalists will in no small measure aid the efforts of the military. While carrying out your role as the fourth estate of the realm, I implore you to do your part in the collective effort to stamp out evil from our nation.”

  • Judge withdraws from Boko Haram leader’s trial

Judge withdraws from Boko Haram leader’s trial

Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has withdrawn from the trial of the alleged leader of a Boko Haram breakaway group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (aka Ansaru), Mohammed Usman (aka Khalid Albarnawi), his second wife, Halima Haliru and six others.

The judge announced his withdrawal on Tuesday while ruling on an application filed by six of the eight defendants for him to transfer the case to another judge because he had exhibited element of bias having allegedly changed his earlier position on the matter.

The Federal Ministry of Justice had earlier this year arraigned the accused persons before Justice Tsoho on an 11-count amended charge relating to terrorism.

They were accused of taking hostage and murdering nine foreigners, including some British and Italian nationals between 2011 and 2013 in Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and other states in the northern part of the country.

Following their arraignment, Justice Tsoho ordered their remand in prison.

But, upon an application by the prosecution, the judge changed his mind and directed that the defendants be kept in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) and adjourned for trial.

When parties got to court on Tuesday, the lead prosecuting counsel, Shuaibu Labaran, said the prosecution was ready to commence trial.

He told the court that his witnesses were available.

  • Students unhappy over state of the nation

Students unhappy over state of the nation

The Student Union Government of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife has shown displeasure of the state of nation even despite the celebration of Independence.

This was contained in a Public Statement obtained by The Nation, signed by the Public Relation Officer Okediji Simon and the President  which reads, ” Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union uses this medium to congratulate all Nigerians, at home and in diaspora, on the independence anniversary of our dear country.

Today, it is importance that we all engage in sober self-reflection and thorough introspection to judge the need for celebration or otherwise of this year’s independence anniversary of our fatherland.

While it is obvious that our nation has nothing inspiring and rejuvenating to mark its increasing age on yearly basis, we believe that the voices of over thirty five thousands students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife as well as demands of Nigerian masses deserve a befitting amplification to register our displeasures and grievances to the Nigerian government and all well meaning international communities.

Dear citizens of noble country, it is most unfortunate to note that after 57 years of independence from the solipsistic British colonial rule, we still taste from the bitter plagues of hunger, disease, illiteracy, poor economy, internal insurgency, terrorism, etc. Our nation has been ploughed into enormous debts, national embarrassment and global mockery as a result of bad governance and irresponsible leadership across all the three organs and tiers of government.

Not to economise the truth, Nigeria is fast losing her relevance in the comity of nations due to a drastic fall in her economic strength; her inability to combat and overcome the protracted Boko Haram insurgency that had claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the North Eastern part of the country; lack of foresight and progressive mentality of most Nigerian politicians which are key to attaining economic growth and political advancement, and lastly; the failure of the government to put all the existing institutions to work towards the path of progress.

From the foregoing, it cannot be gainsaid that our nation has suffered heavy blows of setbacks in politics, science and technology, commerce, innovation and invention.

Nigerian government has totally disregarded the place of the youth in nation building through its open insouciance and insensitivity to their plights.

Nigerian government has failed to understand that a nation that refuses to educate its youths is certainly toeing a path of social perdition, political doom and economic disaster.

By choosing not to properly fund the education sector, the government is depriving the youth of the essential weapons required to fight oppression, selfish leadership regime and tyrannical tendency of the ruling class.

Therefore, it is our duty as youths to take our destinies into our own hands.

As we celebrate this year’s independence anniversary, the following are our demands to the Federal Government of Nigeria as well as the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University:

    1. That education should be properly funded in order to raise the current standard of Federal Government-owed institutions across the country

    2. That Federal Government should invest more of its energy in charting a new course of development in the country that will encourage massive and effective diversification of Nigerian economy

    3. That Nigeria Government should immediately revisit the recommendations of the last National Confab organized during Goodluck Jonathan-administration or fast track other means of engaging the public on important national discourses such as Restructuring, Devolution of Power, etc.

    4. That the Federal Government should sincerely combat insecurity in the Country as Nigerians are tired of constant vitriolic Boko Haram attacks, Fulani Herdsmen ambushes, Badoo Ritualistic killings, etc.

    5. That the Federal Government of Nigeria honours its agreements with all trade/professional unions that just suspended their nationwide strikes in order to ensure smooth running of our various institutions

    6. As a matter of fact, the Federal Government should consider more peaceful and diplomatic means of attending to IPOB agitation for balkanization of the Country rather can deploying the military to the zone when the situation hasn’t gone beyond the competence of the Nigerian Police Force

    7. We demand the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University to make learning and living condition of students on campus more conducive by building more lecture theatres, well-equipped laboratories and hostels

    8. We demand the University Management to ensure students have constant water and power supply

    9. We demand the University Management to constantly embark on cutting of grasses and clearing of bushes to guarantee a safer, and healthy living environment

    10. We demand the University Management to renovate all the existing halls of residence

Finally, we encourage all Nigerians to keep their hopes alive. We should also bear in minds that all hands must be on deck to attain progress and greatness for our dear nation.

Our Union can be strong again and our nation will definitely redeem her dented image in global scene only when we have a unity of purpose and untiring drive, fully devoted to promoting the cause of peace, development and progress.

And in the end, our  nation will come of our this Stygian darkness.

  • Another Boko Haram suspect arrested in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command yesterday said it had arrested another suspected Boko Haram member, Mohammed Basha, at Isua-Akoko in Akoko South East Local Government Area.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph said the suspect was arrested by the men of the anti-crime patrol while he was loitering on Isua-Ifira Akoko road.

He said: ”When the suspect was arrested, he was interrogated and he confessed that he was a member of the Boko Haram sect. He said his father is from Niger Republic while his mother is from Maiduguri in Borno State.

“He said when Maiduguri was hot for him, he ran to Nasarawa State last month and that he left Nasarawa yesterday and came down to the Southwest to hide here.

“He also confessed that a man he called Daffo is his team leader while Abubakar Shekau is still the overall leader of the group.”

Joseph said items suspected to be charms were recovered from Basha.

The spokesman said the suspect was still in the command’s protective custody for further investigation.

He added that the suspect would be paraded soon.

  • Agitations: Buhari disappointed at leaders of communities

Agitations: Buhari disappointed at leaders of communities

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed disappointment at leaders of communities where agitations have sprout in the country in recent times.

The President made this known on Sunday in his Independence Day message to the nation.

According to him, those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which the country went through.

    The message reads in full:

    My dear Nigerians,

October 1st remains a special date for all Nigerians as this marks the day when we attained one of the most precious of human desires — freedom.

Over the years the country has gone through trials and tribulations, but October 1st is always a day for celebrations.

It is a day for thanks giving, reflection and re-dedication.

It is also a day for remembrance. We should remind ourselves of the recent journey from 1999 – 2015, when our country happily returned to democratic rule.

However, in spite of oil prices being an average of $100 per barrel and about 2.1m barrels a day, that great piece of luck was squandered and the country’s social and physical infrastructure neglected.

We were left with no savings and huge infrastructure deficit.

The APC Government’s Campaign rallying cry to restore security, re-balance the economy and fight corruption was not all rhetoric.

The country must first be secured. The economy must be re-balanced so that we do not depend on oil alone. We must fight corruption which is Nigeria’s Number One Enemy. Our Administration is tackling these tasks in earnest.

In the past two years, Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom. A political Party at the Centre losing elections of State Governor, National Assembly seat and even State Assemblies to the opposition parties is new to Nigeria. Added to these are complete freedom to associate, to hold and disseminate opinions. Such developments clearly attest to the country’s growing political development. But like all freedoms, this is open to abuse.

Recent calls on re-structuring, quite proper in a legitimate debate, has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for dismemberment of the country. We can not and we will not allow such advocacy.

As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in our tragic civil war costing about 2million lives, resulting in fearful destruction and untold suffering. Those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which we went through.

I am very disappointed that responsible leaders of these communities do not warn their hot-headed youths what the country went through. Those who were there should tell those who were not there, the consequences of such folly.

At all events, proper dialogue and any desired constitutional changes should take place in a rational manner, at the National and State Assemblies. These are the proper and legal fora for National debate, not some lop-sided, un-democratic body with pre-determined set of objectives.

Government is keeping up the momentum of dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta to keep the peace. We intend to address genuine grievances of the communities.

Government is grateful to the responsible leadership of those communities and will pursue lasting peace in the Niger Delta.

    SECURITY

On security, Nigerians must be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets.

Nigeria is grateful to its neighbours and the international community for the collective efforts to defeat this world-wide menace of terrorism.

Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world.

But we are not letting up. Our Armed Forces in an effort to enhance the operational capability of troops of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE have established Mobile Strike Teams in the North East. These will ensure the final push to wipe out the remnants of Boko Haram.

In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Armed Forces have established a Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin as part of the coordinated military efforts to curtail the movements or re-emergence of the sect in the area.

Government is working round the clock to ensure release of the remaining Chibok girls, as well as other persons in Boko Haram captivity. Government will continue to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies to fight not only terrorism, but kidnapping, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers violence and to ensure peace, stability and security in our country.

    ECONOMY

With respect to the economy, the Government has remained pro-active in its diversification policy. The Federal Government’s agricultural Anchor Borrowers Programme, which I launched in November 2015, has been an outstanding success with:

    · N43.92 billion released through the CBN and 13 participating institutions,

    · 200,000 small holder farmers from 29 states of the federation benefitting,

    · 233,000 hectares of farmland cultivating eight commodities, namely Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, soya-beans, Poultry, Cassava and Groundnuts, in addition to fish farming.

These initiatives have been undertaken in close collaboration with the states. I wish to commend the efforts of the Governors of Kebbi, Lagos, Ebonyi and Jigawa States for their support to the rice and fertilizer revolutions.

Equally commendable are contributions of the Governors of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Benue, Ogun, Kaduna and Plateau States for their support for the Presidential initiative for palm oil, rubber, cashew, cassava, potatoes and other crops.

With the abundance of rainfall last year and this year, agriculture has enjoyed Divine intervention.

Since December last year, this Administration has produced over 7 million 50Kg bags of fertilizer. Eleven blending plants with a capacity of 2.1 million metric tons have been reactivated. We have saved $150 million in foreign exchange and N60 billion in subsidy. Fertilizer prices have dropped from N13,000 per 50Kg bag to N5,500.

Furthermore, a new presidential initiative is starting with each state of the Federation creating a minimum of 10,000 jobs for unemployed youths, again with the aid of CBN’s development finance initiatives.

Power remains a huge problem. As of September 12th, production of power reached an all — time high of 7,001 Megawatts. Government is increasing its investment, clearing up the operational and financial log jam bedeviling the industry. We hope to reach 10,000 Megawatts by 2020.

Key priorities include better energy mix through solar and Hydro technologies. I am glad to say that after many years of limbo, Mambilla Power Project has taken off.

Elsewhere in the economy the special window created for manufacturers, investors and exporters, foreign exchange requirements has proved very effective. Since April, about $7 billion has come through this window alone. The main effect of these policies is improved confidence in the economy and better investment sentiments.

The country has recorded 7 consecutive months of lower inflation, Naira rate is beginning to stabilize, appreciating from N525 per $1 in February this year to N360 today. Broad-based economic growth is leading us out of recession.

Furthermore, in order to stabilize the polity, the Federal Government gave additional support to states in the form of:

    · State Excess Crude Account loans,

    · Budget Support Facility,

    · Stabilization Fund Release

to states and local governments as follows:

    · N200 billion in 2015

    · N441 billion in 2016

    · N1 trillion in 2017

    Altogether totaling N1.642 trillion.

This was done to enable states to pay outstanding salaries, pensions and small business suppliers who had been all but crippled over the years.

    In addition, the Government’s current N500 billion Special Intervention Programme is targeting groups through;

    · Home Grown School Feeding Programme,

    · N-Power Job creation to provide loans to small-scale traders and artisans,

    · Conditional Cash Transfer,

    · Family Homes Fund and

    · Social Housing Scheme.

    CORRUPTION

    Fellow Nigerians,

We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic.

In this fight, the Government has:

    · Empowered teams of prosecutors,

    · Assembled detailed databases,

    · Accelerated the recovery of stolen funds.

The Administration’s new institutional reforms include:

    · Enforcing Treasury Single Account,

    · Whistle-Blowers Policy,

    · Integrated Payroll Personnel and Information System.

We have signed multi-lateral cooperation agreements on criminal matters with friendly countries. There are signs of increasing cooperation from the Judiciary. Recently the Chief Justice of Nigeria directed Heads of all our Courts of first instance and Appeal to accelerate hearings of corruption cases and dismiss any judicial officers found to have been compromised.

Justice Salami has just been appointed to chair the Judiciary’s anti-graft committee. Government expects a lot from this Committee.

I commend the National Assembly for refocusing on its oversight committees. They should, in addition, ensure swift passage of enabling corruption laws. But fighting corruption is a bottom to top operation. I call on all Nigerians to combat corruption at every turn. By not asking for and refusing to accept a bribe, by reporting unethical practices or by blowing a whistle, together we can beat corruption. The government for its part will work for accountability at all levels – Federal, State and Local Governments. CHANGE will then be real.

As we enter the second half of our term of office, we intend to accelerate progress and intensify our resolve to fix the country’s challenges and problems.

Thank you and a happy holiday to all of you.

    God bless our country

Troops kill 1, repel Boko Haram attack in Borno

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it had killed one Boko Haram member after repelling an attack by the insurgents at Bocos village in Bama Local Government Area, Borno State.

Lt. Col. Kingsley Samuel, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 7 Division, said this in a statement issued on Saturday in Maiduguri.

Samuel explained that troops ambushed a group of the insurgents while trying to cross Banki Junction along Bama road on Friday.

He said that the troops killed one insurgent and many others escaped with gun shots, adding that a number of items including foodstuff were recovered from them.

Samuel disclosed that the troops also repelled another attack by the insurgents at a security outpost in Bama general area.

He added that one police officer and a female displaced person were killed in the attack.

“The Nigerian Army Mobile Strike Teams (MSTs) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE at about 6:00 pm on Friday, 29th September 2017 laid ambush on Boko Haram terrorists crossing Bocobs village along Banki Junction, Bama Road in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

“The troops sprang on the unsuspecting terrorists and neutralized one of them while several others escaped with gun shots wounds.

”The troops recovered several items including three bicycles, five Jerry cans and two bags of maize.

“On the same day at about 7: 00 p.m. troops of 202 Battalion of 21 Brigade successfully repelled insurgents attack on an outpost within Bama general area.

“Unfortunately a police personnel was killed in action while a female Internally Displaced Person (IDP) was hit by a stray bullet,” Samuel said.

According to him, the Commander of 21 Brigade on Saturday visited the scenes of the attack, attended the burial of the deceased IDP and commiserated with the IDP community. (NAN)
