The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was yesterday described as a worthy politician with outstanding attributes in the history of political development of the country.

National facilitator, Presidential Support Committee (PSC), Rt. Hon Gideon Sammani, and its Director, Media and Publicity, Engr. • ‘Next Level can’t be achieved by blindly’

Text of All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a colloquium organised yesterday at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, as part of activities marking his 67th birthday.

Next Level is not just a trendy campaign phrase to be quickly discarded once victory has been achieved.

It has a much deeper and more profound meaning, perhaps even more than its authors contemplated. This is because we are a nation still in the process of defining itself politically and economically.

In this process, it is tempting and easy to borrow indiscriminately from those nations that seem to have mastered the art of democratic governance and to have achieved economic prosperity.

However, to achieve durable progress, we can’t afford to work hard but in mindless devotion to the ways of other nations.

This truth is particularly acute when these very nations now face fundamental political and economic questions that cast doubt on the social utility and viability of the economic model under which they have travelled for the past 50 years.

The global economy faces stiff headwinds. Factors, not of our making, now cast the world economy towards low growth

Consumer spending is slipping. Aggregate private debt has attained historic levels. America and China are in a trade tug-of-war. Brexit looms imminent. Whatever form Brexit takes, economic dislocation will emerge from the political confusion now underway.

Even without Brexit, the European Union (EU) itself has entered a rough patch. The Eurozone may already be in recession. Stock markets experience wild swings that speak to an underlying weakness and pessimism about the immediate future.

Forecasters are predicting a global recession within the next 12-18 months.

I render these observations not to frighten anyone but because they ring true. Wisdom requires that we accept reality instead of obscuring it under the cloak of wishful thinking. We must build policies that interact with the world as it is, and not with the world as it should be.

We must recognise these harsh economic tidings as advance warnings to the wise. Hence, we must think deeper and work harder for our people in Nigeria.

I would be a most wicked friend if I knew a storm was approaching yet convinced you to ready your family for an outdoor picnic under the tallest tree. The truth is always a more valuable guardian than fantasy.

Mr. President, you have warned several times that the storm that approaches is not inevitable. It is born of a human folly and reckless greed. This means that it can be rectified by human wisdom and prudential action.

At this point, we must recognise a fundamental truth of our time. The economic model upon which the world is built is unraveling. The coming downturn is just a symptom of this great upheaval.

The global economy faces either genuine reform or gathering ruin.

Because of this, the economic cohesion of Western nations is weakening. Income inequality has reached levels unseen in a century. The middle class in most countries is shrinking.

Wages stagnate while prices are on a ceaseless march upward.

In America, progressives champion a Green New Deal – a massive government programme to modernise that nation’s aging energy infrastructure and to create job programs to keep the middle class from becoming an endangered economic species.

In France, the yellow vests protest the austere policies of the Macron government. The vests have the sympathy of the people.

Brexit, no matter how misguided, was in large part a primal scream by people who feared the EU was responsible for their diminished economic conditions. The frustrated British would have been more accurate had they pointed the finger at a culprit closer to home – the austerity policies of two consecutive Tory governments.

People the world over are questioning the centre-right conservative model that has, with few exceptions, governed the world for the last half century. In one form or another, people are protesting the way things are, and progressive politicians are trying to help the people change things for the better.

The Next Level must be seen as part of this global and historic dynamic.

Our pursuit of the Next Level cannot be achieved by blindly following the economic path of other nations. That would be tantamount to racing to live in a building just as its long-term occupants were frantically rushing out, screaming that the edifice was mean and crumbling.  If we are smart, we dare not enter.

Instead, we must construct our Next Level on a progressive ideology and vision that will take our people out of penury, diversify our economy more aggressively, and empower and retrain our youth.

To be the great nation we purport to be, we must reform and retool our economy according to our definition of what is best for our own people. We cannot assign that duty to anyone else.

Here, I must ask for a little liberty to amend the fine title of this colloquium: “Work for the people.” We must do more than simply work for the people.

Government must “work for the people in a way that enables them to better work for themselves.”

We must amend our basic ideas about the economy.  We must divorce ourselves from our fixation with GDP rates and similar statistics. These things were initially intended to be indicators, suggestive measurements. However, we have misinterpreted these road maps by treating them as if they were the destination itself.

This has caused us to distort the organic relationship between the people and the economy.

This dominant train of thought has made the people servants to the dictates of abstract economic theories. In a more effective system, the economy would be fashioned to serve the concrete needs and legitimate aspirations of the people.

Our economy must be redefined to be an efficient yet moral social construct with the primary goal of optimizing the long-term welfare of the people through the sustained, productive and full employment of labour, land, capital and natural resources.

In the current global context, the best translation of laissez faire economics is “let’s stay poor” economics.

To believe that we are at our best when everyone focuses solely on maximising their own position is to believe that one hundred hands can clutch at the same naira note but no one will get scratched.

To pull the nation from poverty, government must play a decisive role. It must at times direct and even develop markets and opportunities. This is nothing novel. I am only restating what the established economies did when they were young and assumed their trajectories toward growth.

Yet, how do we organise ourselves to meet this task?

Like no Nigerian government before, I believe the second administration of President Muhammadu Buhari shall dedicate itself to changing the very structure of our economy for the better.

The single most important sector for the government’s focus is infrastructure. The most important of our infrastructural demands is power. This has been the greatest discovery of humanity in the last thousand years.

    Power

Affordable and reliable power will drive the industrialisation that shall provide jobs in our cities and produce needed goods for all our people. In a more poetic rendering, it will take our people out of the dark ages and bring the nation into the light of a better day.

I believe the second term of the Buhari administration will work to increase electricity generation, transmission and distribution by more than 50 percent within the next four years.

We require serious and bold reforms to achieve this. What is happening to our gas pipelines? Whatever we have to invest now for our future is a task that must be done boldly. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration shared out generation, distribution and transmission to their friends and cronies without very deep and thoughtful research and evaluation. It has now become pork chops. This privatisation must be revisited. Put experts together for a more constructive reform to improve generation, transmission and distribution by any means necessary. We cannot afford to be too legalistic about this.

Also, we should push to end the practice of billing people for electricity they never received. This practice is a vestige of the past that should not accompany us into the future.  A person should be charged accurately and only for the power that they use.

    Infrastructure

The government should continue to aggressively implement its national infrastructure plan. We must commit ourselves to a national highway system linking our major cities and towns, our centres of commerce, with each other. This will save lives, spur commerce, cut costs and bring Nigerians closer together.

Water catchment and retention systems in strategic locations should also be introduced to end the destructive  cycles of flood and drought affecting  many      areas   .

In working to transform the face of our economy, government must also enact policies that encourage industrialisation and modern agricultural practices. We must applaud President Buhari for the historic innovations made in the agricultural sector.

We must further encourage him to do even more. The government funded social security for the aged and government backed affordable housing and mortgage facilities are things we must continue to explore in an aggressive manner.

In the end, our future is uncertain until we enter it and make of it what we will. We can either let the future happen to us or summon the courage to make the future belong to us as other nations have done.

I don’t think we really have a choice in the matter. We must take the people to the next level. It is a promise made and thus a promise that must be kept.

Our goal is nothing less than enabling people to enjoy lives free of penury and lack. We seek to constitute a nation where all have basic sustenance and sufficient food on their tables, a sturdy and sheltering roof over their heads and the fair chance and means to sustain and further enrich their lives as they see fit.  Let it be that all may live in social contentment and tranquillity with his neighbour as well as with himself. This is what we mean by the Next Level.

Thank you for this wonderful birthday present you have given me. I have been enriched and energised by the intellectual exchange. I hope that you have too. Now, let’s move on to the Next Level.

  • Don’t bow to pressure to rig supplementary polls, Group urges Buhari

Nigerians in diaspora  have urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to bow to pressure from any individual or  political party, encouraging him not to meddle in the conducts of the supplementary polls in some States of the federation.
The Nigerians in diaspora under the aegis of Concerned Kano Citizens (CKC) said there were alleged  subterranean moves by some powerful individuals within the ranks of the All Progressives Congress to rig the inconclusive governorship election in Kano State.
The group said the shocking outcome of the governorship election was caused by Governor Abdullahi Umaru Ganduje poor performances and corrupt tendencies that had dogged the APC-led government in Kano State.
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Mohammed Yusuf, is leading in the yet to be concluded poll with a margin of 26,513 votes.
In a letter dated March 15, 2019 and  signed by its Chairperson, Hajia Amina Bambado and Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq from Washington DC, United Stated of America and made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, reminded President Buhari that he would continue to wield enormous influence and in control Kano whether APC wins or not.
The group added that Kano remain one of the strong political base of Buhari, where he enjoys cut-like followership.
“Our fear had been that President Muhammadu Buhari will lose more fans in Kano if he deploys federal might to rig the election.
” It baffles us that President Buhari and APC could allow governor Ganduje to seek reelection in spite of that video evidence that confirmed how he had been collecting kickbacks running into several millions of dollars from contractors .
“The leadership of the party in Lagos, led by APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu prevented governor Akinwumi Ambode, who committed lesser offences from going for second term. Why this disparity?
” Winning election in Kano could have been easy for APC if the right person was fielded. You could see how they supported President Buhari, this was because of his personality and he will continue to enjoy that support.
“We have seen how some governors and APC leaders  have been plotting to use Osun strategy in Kano, this will fail. The will of the people should not be allowed to be subverted”, the group insisted.

The concerned citizens charged President  Buhari to do all within his capacity to  ensure that adequate security is provided to thwart any kind of voter intimidation, vote buying or other manifestation of rigging.
” He should also call the APC national  chairman, Com. Adams Oshiomhole to order  and advise him to desist from interfering in Kano’s  politics. We cannot be muzzled  to follow the script of power play aimed at 2023 elections. Let voters  exercise their franchise and vote on the March 23 and whoever wins be declared without delay”.
The group added: “As concerned Kano citizens, we felt duty bound to call the attention of Mr. President, the International community and all well-meaning Nigerians that any attempt to impose the current government against the wish of the people will not augur well for our democracy and could lead to unwanted development.
“If Mr. President could sacrifice his integrity on corruption drive for the sake of Ganduje, instead of strengthening it by punishing him, we don’t believe a single loss of life in Kano because of Ganduje is worth it.
“We humbly demand Mr. President to reciprocate our gesture for being his defenders through thick and thin, to save Kano and our politics in the most trying time of our political history and allow us vote freely for whoever we like”, it said.
  • Support Buhari to build a stronger country – Lawmaker tells Atiku

Chairman of the public accounts (state) committee of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Moshood Oshun, has admonished Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and other opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari to see how they can support the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next four years to build a stronger nation.

Oshun, who reacted to President Buhari’s victory at the polls as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noted that Nigeria has several challenges before it adding that it is the time for leaders and followers to unite ahead of the next four years.

Noting that Buhari has remained magnanimous in victory, Oshun urged the opposition to congratulate the winner of the election and support the move to build a Nigeria of everyone’s dream.

He congratulated the president and the APC for the victory, describing it as well deserved from the citizens who are passionate to see that their country is no longer governed by alleged thieves in government.

“We are going to witness a better four years and my admonition to Nigerians is for us all to unite and support the government. Let’s not distract the administration. I am sure that with our support, we would end the next four years meeting set targets.

“Currently, the government has made several marks on various sectors of the country including agriculture and physical infrastructures. It is, therefore, going to be a smooth continuation of already planned goals.

“I want to comment Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and from him to every other person who played favourable roles in this election. Our party will be ever united to as the battle to rid the country of bad governance continues,” the lawmaker said.

  • Lagos Deputy Gov delivers unit for Buhari, others

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Idiat Adebule delivered her Polling Unit 029 Devince Iba, Lagos for President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Olamilekan Solomon and Yinka Durosinmi.

  • Tinubu: Buhari didn’t order shoot on sight

    On election postponement

By law, we should continue to energise our people. It depends on our resources. Because the Electoral Act allows us to continue to campaign and ask us to stop campaigning only 24 hours before the actual election. And once INEC changed the election date to February 23, they have given us the opening to campaign and energise our people. If you have a garden and you don’t nourish it with water, the grass will remain dormant. We don’t want our party to remain dormant.

This is ability of the leadership to convert adversity to opportunity and prosperity and that’s it; that’s what we must do.

On whether the postponement will affect credibility of INEC

It depends on how it is handled and the new process. How the process is managed? You can convert what appears like a crisis, a situation of adversity, to an opportunity and progress

The INEC, under the law, is empowered to postpone, cancel and do whatever is necessary to ensure free and fair election. No party other INEC has this power. We can express our anger and disappointment, but no party can reverse what has been done. So, we are ready for Feb. 23.

On President Buhari’s statement that those who disrupt the election do so at the risk to their lives…

“ I was in that meeting; the president was just reinforcing the fact that if you you are out there snatching ballot boxes, and causing destruction, you are at risk of your own life. Whatever happens to you, no president will give an order that his own citizens be shot summarily, No! No, its okay, emotions are running high these days. Any individual including myself can be misinterpreted.

Shoot on sight are not his words; he is a law-abiding person and he understands categorically and clearly what the rule of law is and the lives of individual citizens, he knows that he is in that office to protect. Now, let me say this: he has been fighting Boko Haram, kidnappers and all that before this election, did you hear him asking them to be shot and executed summarily?

If he has gone through that in the last five years, please give him the benefit of the doubt.

  • Buhari deserves second term – Cleric

The Founder, Unity and Peace Movement (UAPM) in Ondo state,  Pastor Sola Okunade on Wednesday urged Nigerians to give President Muhammadu Buhari the opportunity  to serve for a second term.

According to him, a vote for President Buhari in 2019 would save the nation from impending economic crisis going by his resolute to wage war against corruption in the last three and half years.

Okunade recalled how he predicted that even though Chief M. K. O Abiola would win the June 12, 1992 Presidential election, but that some powerful bloc would prevent him from actualizing his mandate.

The cleric noted that he also hinted on the attempted transformation of late Gen. Sanni Abacha from Military to Civilian rule which he said could had slept doom for Nigeria if not for divine intervention.

On Buhari, the cleric assured that there would be peace and stability if Nigerians cast their votes for him in February 2019.

He noted that Nigeria was blessed with good leaders capable of fixing both human and material resources to move Nigeria to greater heights citing  the antecedent of Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, one of the political pillars in the South West.

According to  UAPM founder, Tinubu had plaid a significant role in sustaining peace, unity and Progress of the country by creating political stability across the country as a detribalised leader.

  • 2019: SDP will accommodate Ambode ,says Chieftain

Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, Chairman, Strategy and Mobilization, Social Democratic Party (SDP), South-West Zone, on Friday said that the party would accommodate Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State in 2019 election.

Pearse, a University teacher, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Ambode would be welcome to fly SDP’s ticket if his (Ambode) party, All Progressives Congress (APC) denied him second term ticket.

Ambode’s second term ticket has been facing some opposition within his party following speculations that he has fallen out of favour with his political godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu is said to be currently rooting for a former commissioner in the state, Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu, who has already declared his intention to contest the governorship on the platform of the APC party, where Ambode also belongs.

Analysts view the development as a trying political season for Ambode, who has since announced his readiness for the party’s direct primary on Sept. 30 to slug it out with his opponents.

Sanwo-Olu, the Managing Director, Lagos State Development and Property Corporation, and Femi Hamzat, a former Commissioner for Works, are in the race for the APC’s governorship ticket.

Pearse said: “I have to tell you the truth that our national leaders have asked us in Lagos to reach out to Ambode and to let him know that we will be ready to accommodate him in our party if he so chooses.

“The reason being that Ambode has not performed excellently but we think, he should have an opportunity for second term to complete some of the works he has started.

“More importantly, we see Ambode as a man who seems to be standing up to greed. That’s the reason why we feel Ambode should be given an opportunity.

“They are fighting him because he has not agreed to sell Lagos totally. So, we will welcome him if he comes.”

The SDP’s chieftain, however, said that whether Ambode came or not, the 2019 general elections were going to be the end of the ruling APC in Lagos.

He said that the National Leader of APC and former governor of the state, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu had made a big mistake by allegedly bringing somebody that is totally unknown.

“They can win the primary (against Ambode) but let it come to the general elections, people will show that this state does not belong to them”.

On SDP’s alliance with some other opposition parties ahead of 2019 elections, Pearse said that the alliance at the national level still subsists and would be used to oust the APC in the state.

He said: “We understand that it might be difficult to oust the incumbent that has been there for years. We need an alliance and that alliance by the grace of God will come into being.

“With that alliance we are sure to win 2019 elections for the people and to retire APC in the state.”

On the outcome of Osun poll, Pearse said that the alleged flaws that characterised the election and runoff had shown that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not prepared for 2019 elections.

“INEC is not prepared for 2019 general elections with the conduct of Osun gubernatorial election. INEC is not independent at all and cannot conduct a fair, credible and acceptable elections.

“The reason being that, once the President of the country is the person who appoints the Chairman of INEC, the INEC is already compromised.

“Looking at the decision of INEC on Osun gubernatorial election, do you think if APC had been the party that won with 353 votes in Osun, they would not have declared the party’s candidate as that winner?

“So, INEC must be trustworthy, incorruptible and fair. People must stand firm to ensure that INEC is uncompromising.”
