  • I am not fighting Buhari, Tinubu, Oshiomhole – Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has said he enjoys the best of relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Fayemi described the claim of a political pressure group, Buhari Support Group that he is working against the President as “baseless and unfounded.”

The Ekiti governor also dismissed the allegations that he is working to remove Oshiomhole and that he is fighting Tinubu.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Olayinka Oyebode, Fayemi wondered how the group came about the alleged feud with the three senior party figures.

Fayemi said he holds Buhari, Oshiomhole and Tinubu in high esteem noting that the trio contributed immensely to his victory in the last governorship election in Ekiti.

He said: “Governor Fayemi holds President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu and Comrade Oshimohole in high esteem and he still maintains a good relationship with them which is not hidden.

“We don’t know where the Buhari Support Group got their story from; Governor Fayemi has the best of respect for these eminent party leaders and he has no reason to be working against them.

“Let us ask ourselves, on what basis will Dr. Fayemi will be working against the President? This was the man who appointed him Minister and supported him to regain the governorship seat.

“Why will he fight Comrade Oshiomhole? It was under his chairmanship that APC won back Ekiti and everybody knew the role played by the national chairman.

“Asiwaju Tinubu is a mentor to the governor; both of them had come a long way in a relationship that has lasted over two decades.

“In fact, Asiwaju attended the governor’s inauguration last week and the roles he played in the APC victory in Ekiti election cannot be forgiven in a hurry.

“Governor Fayemi has no reason to fight or work against our revered President, our respected national chairman and our revered national leader.

“The allegation is false, baseless, unfounded and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it.”

  • APC’s victory in Osun shows democracy at work – Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu says the party’s victory in the Osun governorship election shows that democracy is at work in the country.

Tinubu said this after he received Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun and the newly elected state Governor,  Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola at his Resident in Ikoyi, Lagos on Friday.

Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared as winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the end of Thursday’s re-run election in seven wards.

He polled a total of 255,505 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, who polled 255,023 votes.

Tinubu said that the people of Osun exercised their rights and chose the best candidate to drive development in the state.

”The people of Osun, the state of ‘Omoluabi’ demonstrated their strong determination, they have good judgment, they exercised their rights to choose the best candidate necessary for developmental programmes in the state.

”When you look at those who were running, you have the best, the most brilliant, the most qualified, competent, calm and great candidate.

”That is what they have done to show that democracy is at work.

“Democracy is about the people, and the people have equally exercised their right to be tolerant, patient, persevere and do what is necessary to develop the economy of the state.

”And you need the most competent person that will perform.

”In leadership, you need a thinker and a doer that must be present in the mind, body and soul; that person who will carry the responsibility of the state and I feel that Mr. Oyetola fits perfectly,” he said.

Tinubu urged the people of Osun to encourage and give maximum support to Oyetola.

”The rest is for the people of Osun state to rally round and give him the necessary support and encourage him to do well following the legacy already built.

”He already has a blueprint for development agenda,” he said.

On the APC presidential primary, the Party National leader said the huge support from party faithful in Lagos State was a signal that the party would emerge victorious in 2019.

“Democracy is at work and we have managed the party till now.

”Here in Lagos, about 2.3 million people including myself, as I am standing before you supported and participated in voting for President Muhammadu Buhari.

”And I want to tell you that this has sent a tone or signal to what will come in February 2019,” Tinubu said.

Meanwhile, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and Mr Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence were also on ground during the visit.

  • Ambode eulogizes Ovia, Tinubu

Apparently to douse the tension surrounding  the 2019 All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Lagos, the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday acknowledged the political status of the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at Zenith Bank’ chairman, Jim Ovia’s book launch.

Ambode did this at the launch of the book titled ‘Africa Rise and Shine’, held at Victoria Island. It was chaired by Christopher Kolade, and attended by Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, Publisher of Vanguard newspaper, Sam Amuka, Oba of Lagos Akiolu and others

Ambode noted that he wasn’t prepared to address the gathering since his political Godfather had spoken glowingly about the author.

He asked: “Actually, I didn’t prepare to come and say anything here… And who am I to speak after the Jagaban had spoken?’

Aside that, the governor also ensured that he stood beside Tinubu during the launch of the book to buttress his earlier stand that there wasn’t any rift between them.

Ambode’s comment elicited a resounding applause from the audience.

The governor, however, while eulogizing the author said “the truth is, there is no person that has actually gone through the profession of accountancy that would not have had anything to do with Uncle Jim, and that is the truth.

“There is nobody that will read this kind of book and will not be inspired and I want to recommend it to everyone.

“It is always very good when people who have been successful in their careers or profession decide to say something about how they really toiled to get to where they are.

“Some people just think people get to be successful without knowing that they actually toiled to become successful and this kind of book inspires our younger ones to become more resourceful and then more inspiring,” Ambode said.

Earlier, Osinbajo stressed that the Nigerian dream was captured by Ovia in his autobiography, detailing his journey to success and importance of leadership to development of any nation.

He said: “The Nigerian dream is captured in this book because this is a man that started from nowhere and now worth $16 billion. The most of the wealthy men that Nigeria has didn’t come from wealthy home but humble background.

“Though personnel achievements are known everywhere but what is rare about him was the will to build others without the least apprehension that they could surpass him in the business sector,” the vice president added.

According to him, Ovia has used his own story and many others to describe the trajectory of a continent that has often appeared to be overcome by its challenges and contradiction.

While stressing the importance of leadership, Osinbajo argued that every leader considers service to the public than the benefits that they gain from their action.

“The course of service over self, indicates sacrificial leadership; neither a financial empire or a nation could be built successfully if the leadership cannot delay gratification or keep their hands off the capital of the common man.

“Sacrifice of self is for the greater goal for all and has become the bedrock for great nations and men but sacrifice for self is the most pathetic hollow imagined, with the imagination of men and women who would have been great but perished.”

Also speaking, Tinubu, while describing Ovia as Godfather of Nigerian Banking industry, stressed that he doesn’t portray himself as an hero that couldn’t be emulated “but one that his footpath could be followed to achieve greatness.”

He said: “This title is fitting and proper because not because he was born into the sector but he properly acquired it. The book explained his journey to greatness despite the challenges he faced.

“This is a man that believes in Nigeria and Africa. And that is why I want to thank you for writing this book to show others of what is necessary for the continent to grow. You have opened the door to success and your life teaches many wonderful lessons,” Tinubu added.

Urging the next generation to read and emulate the doggedness of Ovia, the APC national leader stressed: “It is up to the next generation to work through that door in order to create a greater and prosperous Africa.”

Reacting to the accolades showered on him, the author disclosed that his reason for the book title was to change the negative narration about Africa and document historic activities that occurred within the continent.

According to him, the story told about Africa had previously been pathetic because we were often described as a dark continent characterized with coup and conflicts.

“But today, the narrative has started changing. The record showed that the continent has embraced democracy. And that shows that the continent has started rising.”

He noted that acceptance of democracy has positively affected the Gross Domestic Product, GDP of the continent and made the world take notice of the benefits abound in Africa.

  • No rift with Tinubu – Ambode

…Attends APC delegates’ election In Epe

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday totally played down speculation of rift with the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, saying reports to such effect were untrue.

Both the social and traditional media have been flooded with news of a major rift between Tinubu and Governor Ambode over alleged disagreement on the second term bid of the Governor.

Addressing party faithful in Epe during the election of delegates for the Presidential primary election and national convention of the party, Governor Ambode said the reports indicating a fight between him and Tinubu were out of place and that there was no fight anywhere.

“I want you to know that there is no fight anywhere. The National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and my good self we are not in any fight, we are not in any controversy.

“We are praying to God that the best is yet to come and the best will be what Lagos State deserves and I want you to just continue with your prayers that at this time, God will show His hand and make sure that everything that is of blessing to Lagos State and also blessing of Epe will come to pass,” Governor Ambode said.

He specifically commended all the leaders and party faithful who contributed to the success of the delegates’ election in Epe, saying APC remained the party to beat in Lagos and Nigeria.

“We have just concluded our Delegates’ Election in Epe Local Government and by consensus, we have picked our three delegates that will be going to the National Convention come October 6 for the Presidential direct primaries and the convention for all other people.

“I want to say a very big thank you to all our delegates that are present here; I want to say a big thank you to all our leaders that have also supported us to make sure that this event has come and is done very successfully.

“I want to reiterate once again that our party, All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the party to beat; we are the party at the national level and we are going to remain the party in the State,” the Governor said.

Youths in the division also staged a peaceful protest displaying placards of various inscriptions to affirm their support for the Governor’s second term bid.

  • ‘Tinubu, Amaechi didn’t impose Tonye Cole on Rivers APC’

Contrary to claim in some quarters, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has stated that the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, did not impose the Chief Executive of Sahara Energy, Pastor Tonye Cole, as governorship candidate of Rivers APC.

He stated this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, while describing last Thursday’s endorsement of Cole in Lagos by stakeholders of Rivers APC as a step in the right direction, in order to easily take over from Governor Nyesom Wike next year.

Eze urged some displeased members of APC in Rivers to give peace a chance and embrace the popular choice of the Abonnema-Kalabari-born Cole, in order to move the state forward.

Wike, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), while responding to Cole’s adoption, described him as Amaechi’s business partner, with the intention of looting Rivers treasury, while alleging that Asiwaju Tinubu recommended and imposed Cole to enhance his (Tinubu’s) business activities in Rivers state.

Eze asked Rivers governor to desist from attemping to bring the character and persons of Asiwaju Tinubu and Amaechi, a former Rivers governor, into disrepute.

He said: “The reaction by Wike is unacceptable to the leadership of APC in Rivers State, as it presents the leaders of the party in the state as incapable of selecting and electing our candidates on our own terms.

“Wike’s reaction on the coming of Cole shows that he is already frightened. I will not be shocked if he considers resigning before the 2019 election, to avoid the embarrassment of awful defeat that awaits him, if he summons courage to contest.

“Politics truly is a serious business to be left in the hands of a person like Wike. It comes to me a great relief for Pastor Tonye Cole to accept to offer himself to rescue Rivers State from its present pitiable state, under the hold of some misfits that do not understand what governance is all about.

“It is time to put our best to work. I am convinced that with Tonye Cole’s global connections, he will attract investments and woo his friends in the private sector to Rivers State for the creation of Rivers State of our dream. So, let us leave sentiments aside and support him for a better Rivers of opportunities.”

Eze also hailed the vision of Amaechi, the leader of APC in Rivers and Southsouth zone, as well as all other leaders of the party for agreeing on the brilliant choice of Cole.

He noted that the choice of Cole was the answer to the perceived injustice done to the riverine part of the Rivers, which had not had a shot at governing the state since 1999, but being dominated by their upland brothers.

The APC chieftain also lauded the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, an oil magnate, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Prince Tonye Princewill, Davies Sokonte, Dr. Dawari George and others eminently qualified to govern Rivers, for coming together to achieve the unity of purpose and agreeing to support Cole’s candidacy.

He noted that Cole stepping down from Sahara Group as the chief executive officer, to enable him to participate actively in the Rivers state’s governorship race, was a positive step towards sacking Wike next year.

Eze said: “It is gladdening to note that Cole’s candidature has been accepted by most key stakeholders of the APC in Rivers State, which will surely enable him to clinch the party’s governorship ticket during the primary election. This is a good sign, which demonstrates total departure from the normal practice in which politicians aspire for offices without any defined vision on what to do with governance, when they eventually get power.

“With the resolve of APC to field a riverine candidate of Ijaw extraction, particularly from the great tribe of Kalabari Kingdom, the injustice of upland governing Rivers State for twenty years to the determent of the riverine area would have been addressed.

“The choice of the party to settle for a candidate like Architect Cole, whose intimidating credentials are something that will aid the party in its efforts and mission to change the fortunes of Rivers State positively, is commendable. The internationally-acclaimed billionaire and son of a former Managing Director of Daily Times Newspaper and former Ambassador of Nigeria to Brazil, Pa Patrick Dele Cole, will actually send shivers down the spine of Wike and his allies.”

The APC chieftain also described Cole as God fearing, highly cerebral and uniquely unassuming, while expressing optimism that he would lead Rivers State into a new era of prosperity, when the youths would be empowered to work hard and earn a living, rather than carrying guns.

  • Refusal of court orders and refusal to prosecute ‘protected’ criminals: the buck stops with the AGF and the President, but only in the last instance!

It was Olusegun Obasanjo that first drew my attention to perhaps the single most troubling wart or disfiguration on the body of the rule of law in the post-military period that began in 1999. I am talking of course of the open and notorious defiance of court orders by the federal government of the federation. If I remember correctly, the casus belli was a serious disagreement over control of the local governments of the country, either by the government at the centre or the state governments, with particular reference to Lagos State, the prime disputant or litigant in the case. The Supreme Court ruled in favour of Bola Tinubu and Lagos State, but Obasanjo completely refused to obey the ruling of the highest court in the land, a bad omen for a nation that was just returning to civilian, democratic rule after the long reign of the military dictators.

I look back to that faceoff between OBJ and the Supreme Court and I must admit to a naivety on my part because I had thought then that Obasanjo could not get away with it. I confess now that I didn’t exactly know who was going to stop Obasanjo and how they were going to achieve that necessary task. All that was on my mind was the expectation, the hope that since we were no longer under military rule, since this was a president in mufti and not in battle fatigues, Obasanjo would be forced to obey the ruling of the highest court in the land. He wasn’t; and moreover, he got away with it, just as if we were still in the age of the all-powerful military autocrats.

Well, following last week’s column on the Buhari administration’s steadfast refusal of court orders granting Sambo Dasuki bail while being prosecuted for what is perhaps the worst case of mega-looting supervened by one man in our country, my mind went back to this whole issue of defiance of court orders by the federal government in what is supposed to be a post-military, democratic epoch. In my great unease about this matter, I spoke with and exchanged emails with many compatriots. It was in the process of these “conversations” that it occurred to me that there is actually a flip side, an underbelly to the impunity and notoriety of refusal of court orders and this is the unwillingness and ultimately refusal to prosecute protected criminals. This recognition came to me after someone reminded me of the cases of Babachir David Lawal, Abdulrasheed Maina and Ayo Oke all of whom, in spite of the enormity of their crimes, have never been prosecuted by the Buhari administration.

Dear readers, which is worse – refusal of court orders or an unwillingness amounting to refusal to prosecute protected criminals? Is it even productive to compare and weigh the scale of justice aborted and denied involved in each of them when in fact the two refusals are perpetrated by the same institutional agents? And speaking specifically of the refusal to prosecute, isn’t it probably the case that what we know, what we see is only the tip of an iceberg? For one politically exposed case like that of Babachir Lawal or Abdulrasheed Maina, how many hundreds – perhaps thousands – of unknown miscreants go unheralded and unknown? This is for me the bottom line: the refusal to prosecute proven criminals is the enabling foundation, the condition of possibility for the refusal of court orders that is much better known and more widely condemned simply because it ostensibly carries a much greater political punch against the Buhari administration.

If all I have so far been saying or arguing in this piece seems rather despondent, let me hasten to say that actually, despondency is not the emotion, the sentiment that I feel. And what is the basis of my optimism, you might ask? Well, simply this: following the “conversations” that ensued after the publication last week of my column on Sambo Dasuki, I went and downloaded a PDF copy of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015 and reread all the 48 Parts and 495 Sections of it, hoping to find something in it that could provide a way out of the dilemma. It was in the process of this probe into the provisions and intricacies of this exceptionally humanistic and idealistic law that is ACJA that I made a discovery that startled and enthused me. What is this discovery? This is it: whoever is the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has enormous powers to make the rule of law work in our country, the rule of law in its own right but also with regard to justice, fairness and equity to the downtrodden and the underprivileged in our country.

To give a sense of the philosophical and ethical bases of ACJA, I quote from the so-called “Explanatory Memorandum” that serves as a sort of preamble to the document:

This Act provides for the administration of criminal justice system which promotes efficient management of criminal justice institutions, speedy dispensation of justice, protection of society from crimes and protection of the rights and interest of the suspect, the defendant and the victims in Nigeria.

It is with this “preamble” in mind that one can appreciate the weight that the Parts and Sections dealing with the powers and responsibilities of the Attorney General of the Federation exert on us with their comprehensiveness, their thoroughness and their acuity. Relating this observation to the subject of this discussion, I propose the following reading of the text of ACJA that goes to the heart of the grave dereliction of duty behind the crime of refusal to prosecute protected criminals: it is the AGF not the President, it is Abubakar Malami and not Muhammadu Buhari that is responsible for prosecuting all known cases of criminals in Nigeria. As simple as that? Yes, as simple as that!

Dear readers and compatriots, many, many times we read or hear of complaints that Buhari it is who does not permit the prosecution of politically exposed criminals like Babachir Lawal and Lawal Daura.  We read of powerful, heartrending protests about thousands of murder suspects in many areas of the country, some of them arrested, that are never prosecuted, with the protests directed at Buhari and not at the AGF. But please, go to the text of ACJA and you will find that the document is very clear, very specific as to where the responsibility lies – with the AGF and not the President. As a matter of fact, there is not a single mention of the post of the President in the text of ACJA!

Of course, there will be readers who will assert that I am merely quibbling here, that since the AGF is the appointee of the President, non-performance of crucial duties and obligations pertaining to life and death, crime and punishment by the AGF should, in the final analysis, be laid at the feet of the President. I am not quibbling here and neither am I being disingenuous. If ACJA so deliberately and extensively specifies on whose shoulder lies responsibility for justice, fairness and equity for all in the administration of the criminal justice system in Nigeria, why shouldn’t we make that high public and legal officer – the AGF – the primary object of our complaints and protests when justice is aborted and denied? To put this in very concrete terms, what indications do we have that AGF Malami has ever tried at all to have Babachir Lawal prosecuted and was only prevented from doing so by Buhari? None, no indications at all!

Right now, newspaper headlines and banners are rife with hints that Buhari is about to decide the fate of Lawal Daura. Well, let’s be clear about one thing, at least as far as the law is concerned: it is the AGF and not the President that should take the action necessary to prosecute Lawal Daura for the siege on the National Assembly. Yes, behind the scenes Buhari may direct his AGF not to have Daura prosecuted but in the first instance, calls for Daura’s prosecution should go to the AGF, not the President.

For those who may still be inclined to think that there really is no serious and consequential distinction to be made between Buhari and Malami on responsibility for the grave dereliction of duty that is behind the refusal to prosecute protected criminals, there is this unassailable aspect of ACJA: it actually stipulates, very extensively, that whoever is the AGF must be a person of great uprightness, conscience and compassion, especially in the interest of the oppressed and the downtrodden of our society. Please, compatriots, do not forget that ACJA came into being on the heels of the great injustice, unfairness and inefficiency that pervade the administration of criminal justice in our country.

And do not forget, compatriots, that, even now as we are debating these issues, ACJA 2015, in its full dimensions, is yet to be implemented by our law courts, which in effect means that ours is still one of the most unjust legal orders in the world. Think, compatriots, of the thousands killed and or maimed in the herdsmen’s attacks on farmers and their communities, in comparison with the paucity of those arrested for these murderous onslaughts, together with the even more rare instances of their prosecution. Think also, dear readers, of the other thousands murdered through political, militia and inter-communal rampages. These are the things people have in mind when they state that for most of its peoples, Nigeria is not only one of the toughest places on the planet in which to live, it is also one the most regrettable lands in the world in which to die. Also, these are the things that prompted those who drafted ACJA and saw it through from draft to legislation to make the AGF the one on whose shoulder lies its actualization.

Please do not get me wrong. In the final analysis, the buck stops with both the AGF and the President, with both Malami and Buhari. But only at the very last instance. In the first, second and third instances and up to even the thirty-seventh instance, the buck stops with the AGF and all the Attorney Generals of the 36 states of the federation. In ACJA, the AGF has the responsibility to coordinate the activities of all these other chief law officers of the country. This means that in reality, Abubakar Malami or whoever is the current incumbent of the post at any point in time is the one on whom lies the responsibility.

In conclusion compatriots, I have one very simple “solution” for this dilemma: push hard, very hard on Malami; insist that so far in his tenure, he has been a great misfit, an unconscionable obstacle to the execution of the obligations and responsibilities of his office; if Buhari stands by him – as I expect that he will – know only then, compatriots, that the buck has moved from the AGF to the President. Only then will we at last come to see that the refusal to obey court orders is nothing if not the other side of the refusal to prosecute protected criminals.

  • Delta APC chieftain commends Oshiomhole, Tinubu over direct primaries

A chieftain of the Delta All Progressive Congress (APC), Hyacinth Enuha has commended the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole for adopting direct primaries in the forthcoming party primaries, insisting that it will bring about progress in the nation’s democracy.

He praised the national leader of APC and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu for advocating it.

Enuha said the party in Delta State is embarking on membership registration exercise to conduct direct primaries where candidates of the party would emerge for the 2019 general election.

He said the party opted for direct primaries to discourage financial inducement of delegates by wealthy politicians which usually characterize delegates’ primaries leading to the emergence of unpopular candidates.

According to Enuha, the registration exercise which is expected to begin nationwide from next week will cover old and new members, adding however that those who registered in 2013/2014, will be required to revalidate their membership.

He said, “After the registration, permanent membership cards will be issued which will be the voting cards for the direct primaries. There will be no more issues of locking delegates in hotel rooms, feed them for three days and induce them with lots of money to vote for a particular person.

Continuing, “It will be difficult to bribe the entire members of the party at any level. So an aspirant does not need to have so much millions to emerge as candidate. What needs to be done is for the aspirants to mobilise the grassroots and convince them to vote for him or her. The direct primary is a popularity contest because the people know who they want.”

The APC leader spoke in Ogwashi-Uku while playing host to an aspirant for the State House of Assembly seat for Aniocha South constituency, Mr. Victor Sorokwu who led his campaign team on a consultation visit.

The APC leader in Delta North, who said he was overwhelmed by the level of commitment by the House of Assembly hopeful, assured Mr. Sorokwu of a level playing field for all the aspirants reminding him that the option of direct primary was adopted to make it easier for only those who are grassroots oriented to emerge as candidates.

Sorokwu, a practicing journalist, had told his host that if supported and given the ticket, he is capable of dislodging the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and delivering the legislative seat to the APC.

  • Direct primary, best option for Ondo APC – Boroffice

A lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof Ajayi Boroffice has said that adoption of direct primary is the only veritable means to elect party candidates in Ondo State and other All Progressives Congress (APC)- controlled states ahead of 2019 general elections.

Boroffice in a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, (CPS) Kayode Fakuyi, maintained that the adoption of direct primary is a ‘settled matter’.

According to him, the national leadership of APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other prominent leaders of the party have declared absolute support for it.

Boroffice said”As the preparations for primary election rev up, it is necessary to reassure members of the APC in Ondo State that the National leadership of our party ably led by Comrade Adams Oshiomole has adopted direct primary as the only means of electing party candidates in the state.

“The position of APC on direct primary is clear. It states that direct primary will hold in APC – governed states while indirect primary/delegate primary will hold in states where the state governments are not governed by APC.

“It should also be noted that President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other prominent leaders of our party have thrown their weights behind the party on the adoption of direct primary. Therefore, the adoption of direct primary is a settled matter. It is unambiguous. It is uncontroversial. It is clear”.

The statement pointed out that the report credited to the Vice Chairman of the APC (Southwest) Bankole Oluwajana that, “The method to be adopted will depend on what the leadership of the party in the state wants”, is untrue.

“It should be understood that the National leadership of APC with the exclusive responsibility to conduct primary elections across all states in Nigeria has adopted the direct primary.

“It is neither the business of the zonal structure nor duty of state structures of our party. All party members are aware the constitution of the APC did not empower state chapters to choose or decide method of selecting party flag bearers.

“Furthermore, the resolution of the National leadership is not subject to discretional amendment or modification by the zonal or state structures of the party”. The statement stressed.

Boroffice contended that the adoption of direct primary by the APC would deepen democracy and ensure popular participation, saying” the national leadership has empowered all party members in Ondo State with voting powers for the purpose of nominating flag bearers of the APC in the 2019 general elections”.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology maintained that  “no individual or group can snatch or hijack such voting powers from members of APC in  the state”.

  • ‘Emulate Tinubu’s political Virtues’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Adeniyi Ayodeji on Saturday urged progressive politicians to emulate the virtues of the former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
