  • Ambode’s wife welcomes first baby of the year

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode on Tuesday, 1st of January welcomed the first baby of the year in the State that was delivered at 12am to the family of Mr and Mrs Adegbesan at Island Maternity, the baby weighed 3.7Kg.

The annual celebration of the first baby of the year in the State held separately at Shomolu General Hospital, Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC), Gbaja, and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital Tuesday.

The governor’s wife restated her call for pregnant women in the State to always patronize government health facilities for safe delivery and also immunize their children against killer diseases.

She said it was important for mothers to give quality attention and priority to the well-being of their children in the overall interest of the society.

“The huge government expenditure on infant and maternal health infrastructure, could only be justified by commensurate use of the modern facilities by the women, their babies and the children”, she said.

She noted further that government’s efforts in stemming maternal and infant mortality would be slow in materializing, if expectant mothers did not go to the centres to use the facilities.

According to her, “I wish to note that Lagos State Government has continued to strengthen the health sector with the provision of neonatal care units, equipment and resources to our State hospitals, to enhance the quality of maternal and child care services in our State.

“The workers in the Primary Health Care centres and General Hospitals are committed and determined to provide quality care, but you have to go there and use the facilities. Mother and Child Centres are also being located in nearly every neighbourhood of the State, for excellent infant and maternal health care delivery.”

Stressing the need for immunization, she said: “My passionate appeal to mothers, therefore, is to ensure they complete the full course of immunization for their children, to prevent childhood killers like measles, diarrhea, pneumonia, tuberculosis, tetanus and hepatitis, to mention a few. In addition, parents must avoid the use of contaminated water, malnutrition and poor sanitation, as they also contribute to childhood mortality.

The Governor’s wife also commended the National Population Commission (NPC) for registering newborns at Lagos hospitals, urging parents to always cooperate with the agency, for accurate data compilation.

Besides, she urged expectant mothers to maintain good hygiene and health-promoting lifestyle in pregnancy, to ensure the well-being of their expected babies.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris said as part of efforts to facilitate access to health care, the State Government recently implemented the Health Insurance scheme, and urged all residents to take advantage of the initiative.

“It is our hope in this New Year, with the implementation of the Lagos State Health Scheme; more Lagosians will have access to improved services and enjoy the kind of care they would have been unable to before now.

“With the exemplary leadership of His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, you can be confident that the State will continue to stimulate the required quality of health service delivery that is poised to address existing health gaps and even new health challenges that might emerge in the future,” Idris said.

Also speaking, wife of the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for next year’s gubernatorial election in the State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu commended Governor Ambode for his commitment and investment in provision of infrastructure to scale up the health sector.

Ibijoke, who is the Chief Medical Director of Shomolu General Hospital, said it was on record that the facility had enjoyed tremendous support from the State Government, while the Governor recently approved funds to demolish and rebuild the distressed main building, among others.

At Shomolu General Hospital, the first baby was delivered by the family of Awofeso Adara Ojo by 1:47am with a weight of 3.0kg, while at Gbaja MCC, the first baby was delivered by the family of Amudalat Ojo by 1:58am with a weight of 2kg.

Aside the gifts given to the first babies, the wife of the governor also distributed Special Mummy’s Pack to all the babies at the three hospitals.

  • XMAS: Only humility, love, selflessness can stop violence says governor’s wife

Pray for peaceful elections, WIFE of the Lagos State Governor Mrs. Bolanle Ambode yesterday urged Nigerians to imbibe the teachings of humility, love, selflessness and fairness, saying that it is only in practicing them that violence can give way for unity and love to reign supreme among all people.

Speaking at the 2018 Christmas Carol Service at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, Mrs. Ambode said that despite Jesus awesome glory, He came into the world with disarming humility, reflected in His carriage, interaction and all that He did, saying that if people could do same, the world would be a better place.

She said: “Dear brethren, imagine what the world would be if everyone had the qualities of Jesus Christ. It would be a world without hate and violence, where love reigns supreme, ensuring joy, peace and complete harmony, among all people and all nations.

“Of course we cannot be Jesus Christ, but we can imbibe His teachings and strive hard to emulate His qualities of humility, love for all, fairness, selflessness and consideration for fellow humans, among others.

“If we succeed in doing these, we would do less of preaching to bring non-believers to the vineyard, as our lives would be perfect examples and model that would convince the multitude to come to God. This way, we would have a world where love and Godliness reign supreme.”

Making reference to the theme of the Carol Service: “The Light of the World”, the governor’s wife said the event was put together to appreciate the magnitude of undeserved suffering that Jesus went through for mankind and express same with solemn songs of praise.

  • Abstain from cultism, drug abuse, Ambode’s wife tells students

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Tuesday appealed to students to abstain from cultism, drug abuse and other career-ruining ventures, stressing that no excuse could justify indulgence in social vices.

Mrs. Ambode, who made the appeal in her keynote address at the second Distinguished Lecture of the Lagos State University (LASU) in Ojo, identified social vices as the bane of proper youth development in the country, urging them to resist the temptation to engage in social vices as they will only ruin their future.

According to her, “No matter the peer pressure, emotional challenge or psychological issues you may be facing, I urge you to say no to drugs, cultism and other vices. One moment of indiscretion is enough to ruin a life. Your lives will not be ruined”.

She urged them to make best use of the knowledge gained today, for their self-development tomorrow.

Mrs. Ambode, an alumna of LASU, rated students of the University very high, describing them as some of the best, capable of holding their own anywhere in the world.

Mrs. Ambode filled with nostalgia, recalled her student days when “I walked the same road as you do, eat at the same joints as you eat, attended lectures in some of those classes that you use today; I am a proud alumna of this great institution”.

She reflected that the founding fathers of the school had a vision of academic distinction for all students that would pass through it, hence the robust academic agenda and phenomenal rise of the institution, when compared to its peers around the country.

She said because of the quality of education in that institution, many products of the school had gained global recognition and doing very well in coveted professions around the world.

Encouraging the students she said, “I can see seated before me this morning future presidents, governors, captains of industry, great researchers and accomplished technocrats.

“The Lagos State Government in conjunction with our University has given you the platform to challenge yourselves to face the future, by offering you practical classes through the ‘Ready Set Work’ initiative, and series of lectures and programmes like we are having today,” she said.

She commended the university authorities for the establishment of a Career Development Centre, for continuous improvement of LASU graduates, for professional efficiency and effectiveness.

In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun reeled out several scholastic and professional achievements recorded by the institution, through outstandingly brilliant male and female students, who have continued to make waves locally, continentally and globally.

He noted with pride, that the United Nations had just chosen a cohort of millennium fellows from the University, to support its Sustainable Development Goals.

Other such exploits according to him, included an on-going exchange programme with Indiana University, USA, among other inspiring achievements.

Prof. Fagbohun stressed that the Centre for Career Development was established to entrench the potential of students, with a vision to chart career pathways and produce employable and marketable graduates, for national and global relevance.

Guest speakers, Joke Silva, Segun Arinze and Mrs. Dan-Faparusi Ogugua Enitan, unanimously counseled the students to adopt the five Ds of Desire, Determination, Diligence, Dedication and Discipline, in their pursuit of career success, adding that they should get rid of fear and be prepared to start small.

  • Ambode’s wife appeals to women to stand against corruption

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode has appealed to all mothers and women in the state and the country at large to take a stand against corruption.

She spoke at Protea Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, during a one day seminar and award presentation, organized by Fight Against Corruption Organization (FACO), with the theme; “The role of women in the fight against corruption”.

Ambode, who was represented by Titilola Ayinla, said the fight against corruption should start from the home front by discouraging any act, behaviour and attitude that aid and abet corrupt tendencies.

According to her; “If we succeed individually in our various homes, there will be no room for corruption and corrupt practices in the larger society.

“If we do not kill corruption, it will eventually kill us. The short and long term effects of corruption are too severe for any country and its citizens; hence the need to take steps to redress the situation before it’s too late.”

She added that the fight against corruption must be seen as a priority in which everyone is a stakeholder and actively involved, if we truly desire to address the issue of pervasive poverty and make the economy work for everyone.

Ambode congratulated and urged the awardees to intensify efforts to fight corruption in their respective capacities while also commending FACO for the initiative.

Executive Chairman, FACO, Dr Francis Shopekan said the nation cannot go well without the impute of women, whom he described as home builders and future leaders.

“Women build the home and the family, if we exempt them in the fight against corruption, we will go nowhere. Some women have a stronger heart than men. Giving the women platform and support will go a longer way to encourage them to rise to the full task and capacity in this nation.”

According to him, to curb corruption, government has to pick all those that have a foreign account, freeze the accounts and have a dialogue with them and make it mandatory that they should establish businesses in the country where they will employ a minimum of 100,000 youths.

“To fight corruption is a collective responsibility and government cannot do it alone. We all need to do the right things and leave the right legacy behind for the next generation,” he said.”

The keynote speaker, a Human Right Activist, Funmi Falana, said no country is free from corruption.

She noted that the prosecution process in the country is faulty; adding that it is one of the reasons corruptions is still the way it is in Nigeria.

She said women have always been in the fore front of fighting corruption, noting that women are the custodian of virtues in the society.

“We are the ones that brought up the children right from cradle to adulthood and whatever we put into the children as cradle is what they take up to become responsible citizens. Women should teach the virtue and let children know that corruption is something they should have nothing to do with. We must take away the love of money but imbibe in them hard work.”

She said women should be given the chance in the country, noting that men have failed the country but women will do it better. “Women must be involved in politics and be a part of decision making process. The presence of women in politics will help curb corruption in our country.”

“What we have in Nigeria is not democracy, it is moneycracy. We must address our system of politics and the entire process must be changed. We can only deal with corruption if we all fulfill our roles in the home and the society at large. Corruption will continue except we all stand up and take necessary steps to curb corruption,” she said.

Former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof Ibiyemi Bello said corruption is in all sectors, urging all to vote their conscience in elections.

She urged women never to give up on any situation, noting that women have to work twice as hard as men.

“Women should get busy, compete with men in their field and do extra work,” she said.

  • Ambode’s wife donates shoes, socks to Lagos school pupils

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, on Tuesday commenced the distribution of 50,000 shoes and branded socks to primary one pupils of public schools across the state.

Ambode, in her remarks at the Cherubim and Seraphim Primary School, Ikorodu, where the project commenced, said the initiative, tagged “Project Bright Steps,” was to boost the morale of the pupils.

She said it was also to sensitise the society on the importance of the pupil’s welfare in getting the best out of them in their academic pursuits.

“We observed with pain, that many pupils were less than properly dressed to School, as some turn up in bathroom slippers, with many others barefooted.

“This sort of daily appearance for school activities certainly cannot guarantee them the desired self-esteem or confidence to excel in their academic work,” Ambode said.

She explained that it was in view of the above that the foundation settled on the mass procurement and distribution of shoes and socks to the pupils to prepare them for school.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Project Bright Steps initiative is part of Ambode’s pet project Hope for Women in Nigeria (HOFOWEM).

Ambode urged the pupils to be serious with their studies and not make excuses of challenges and limitations.

“You can learn something new every day, if you listen attentively in class and with strong determination, you can overcome all barriers to achieve your desired dream.

“Keep your eyes on the stars and feet to the ground, do small things in great ways. It is about your attitude of mind,” Ambode said.

The governor’s wife said the exercise was an annual event aimed at touching as many pupils as possible in the public primary schools.

HOFOWEM is hinged on hope, with focus on issues of children, women, widows, youths, aged women and the sick.

“It also carries out economic empowerment for youths, support for pregnant women and mothers of multiple births, among others,” she explained.

Earlier in her welcome address, Mrs Oyefunke Olayinka, the Chief Executive Officer of HOFOWEM, said that the programme was aimed at increasing school attendance by equipping pupils for school.

Olayinka said this would serve as a means of support for indigent parents who might find it difficult to provide the basic school needs required by their children and wards.

She commended Ambode for her love and care for children and to ensure that they have a secured future.

We also reports that with the flag-off of the project in Ikorodu, the initiative will be extended to other centres in Agege, Maryland, Yaba, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Epe and Lagos-Island.

About 175,000 shoes and socks were distributed to all primary one to three pupils of public primary schools in 2016.

  • Another 257 Nigerians arrive from Libya

Another 257 Nigerians arrive from Libya

A few hours after 144 Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya, another aircraft carrying 257 of their compatriots on Wednesday landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The spokesperson for the Lagos Airport Police Command, Mr Joseph Alabi, confirmed this in an interview in Lagos.

Alabi said the returnees arrived aboard a Libyan Airlines aircraft at the Cargo Wing of the airport at about 1.30 a.m.

He said they were assisted back to Nigeria by the International Organisation for Migration ( IOM ) and the European Union ( EU ) after being stranded in the volatile North African country enroute Europe.

Alabi said “We received another batch of Nigerians early this morning from Libya.

“They comprised of 65 adult females, 179 adult males, seven children and six infants.”

He also confirmed that four of the returnees had medical cases and were promptly taken away on an ambulance for treatment.

According to him, the returnees were received by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

Report says another set of 144 Nigerians had arrived on Tuesday at about 6.45 p.m. aboard a chartered Buraq Airlines aircraft with registration number 5A-DMG.

They were received at the Hajj Camp area of the airport by the Wife of the President, Haija Aisha Buhari, represented by the Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode.

Also on ground to receive them was the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa and officials of other government agencies.

Report also says the Federal Government said it has a record of 2,778 Nigerian migrants registered in “accessible” detention camps in Libya, ready for repatriation.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Mr. Tiwatope Elias-Fatile on Tuesday, said the country’s embassy in Libya had been visiting detention camps to identify Nigerians for registration.

The ministry stated that those registered were issued Emergency Travel Certificates.

The ministry also explained that the embassy, in collaboration with the IOM, repatriates 250 migrants weekly and had returned 3,000 of them so far.

“From the 2,778 registered Nigerians who are still in detention camps, another set of 250 Nigerian migrants will be arriving on Tuesday December 5 via the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, at 7.00pm, to be received by NEMA officials.

“The Embassy, in collaboration with the IOM, repatriates 250 Nigerian migrants by flight to Lagos weekly – each flight can accommodate only 250 passengers.

“The repatriation is a continuous exercise and the Embassy routinely issues the requisite travel documents to the migrants.

“The Embassy will continue to engage the legitimate government in Libya and other stakeholders in addressing the plight of Nigerian migrants in that country.”

The ministry further said the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, had invited the Nigerian Embassy’s Head of Mission, Mr. Iliya Fachano, to Abuja for consultations.

“He is in Abuja already and during the period of the consultations, arrangements have been made for him to address press conferences on the issue.

  • Bolanle Ambode: A profile in humility

Bolanle Ambode: A profile in humility

INSPIRING. Instructive. Food-for-thought. Those words kept reeling round my mental horizon, as one delved deep into the compelling persona of none other than the current First Lady of the Centre of Excellence, Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode. And why not? Like all the biblical virtuous women she must have learnt a lot from, such as Sarah, Hannah, Abigail and Esther; she has had her fair share of life’s challenges but she never capitulated to their whims and caprices.

Rather, she simply turned her stumbling blocks into stepping stones. She mustered the needed courage at every twist and turn of immanent Fate, with absolute faith in God to weather the storms. Like raw iron, she has been purified through the fires of affliction to assume the inner strength of steel. As reflected in the book of Isaiah 48:10 KJV: God stated that: “Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction”

And by scaling over what would ordinarily have constituted the hitches and hurdles along her chequered life, she was drawn closer to God. Those challenges served as the tonic to reinvigorate her faith in Him. Now, by that special grace she stands solidly as the pillar of unflinching support behind her loving husband, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, now widely acclaimed as one of the best performing governors in the country.

The lesson to glean from this is that as Christians, there are some miracles that we may not have the capacity to carry, unless we have been adequately prepared to do so. Such preparation would definitely involve having to pass through some trying times. As Henry Ford rightly puts it, “we learn more from our challenges than from our successes”.

What therefore, define her today are catchy phrases such as; “ a prayer warrior”, “an epitome of care and love as the chief host in the State Government House”, “a virtuous woman”, “a  lesson in humility” and “mother to all”. For those who are close to her, these words do not connote hyperbole. They are apt descriptions of her true character. According to Patricia Ennis, “A virtuous woman isn’t ruled by her passions-she passionately pursues an incomparable God.”

For instance, she has used the power of prayers to propel her husband in his quest to become the state governor. Throughout the hectic periods of campaigns back in 2014 and early 2015, she never for once stepped foot in the campaign office. She attended only important rallies and seminars but was at the background galvanizing the good women of Lagos to cast their lot for her husband. As she told them and others who offered their support, his ambition was informed by “the will of God”. She would also add that, “this is God’s project and He will see it through”. What a woman of faith!

Indeed, her legendary humility was exhibited during those trying moments when she had to personally cook the delicious meals for various visitors and members of the campaign team. She would welcome each of them with her genial smile, exuding her alluring meekness and modest lifestyle.

It is on record that even at the monthly thanksgiving service at the State House Chapel, she would lie down flat for prayers and stand up to take part in the singing of songs to which she would dance to the admiration of God and man.

It is also worth noting that she has in no small measure inspired her husband’s uncommon passion in the determined drive to rid Lagos of all forms and vestiges of crimes against women from rape to domestic violence. She is an advocate of a happy and peace-loving family being a good example of one herself.

And as part of her pet project, Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative, (HOFOWEM)  she has commenced the distribution of 175,000 educational kits, consisting of school shoes and socks to children across the state public primary schools. The foundation had in September last year launched “ Project Bright Steps’’ for public school pupils in Lagos State, during which Mrs. Ambode made the promise. Speaking at the Central Primary School, Oba Akinjobi Ikeja, one of the venues slated for the distribution exercise, Mrs. Ambode also renewed her call to parents and well-meaning Lagosians to pay adequate attention to the welfare of school pupils in the state.

In a similar vein, she has flagged-off the state’s mass  de-worming exercise for primary school pupils in the state, charging parents in the state to encourage hand-washing among their children, as well as maintain a clean and healthy environment so as to prevent them contracting worm infections..

According to her, “De-worming children helps them to develop well and boost their learning capability. This is a great advantage that cannot be ignored because good academic performance will to a large extent determine the future of a child”.

She has in addition, twice successfully hosted the coming together of all the wives of the top-notch political office holders in the state to carry them along in her dream to make governance more people-friendly.

And as one with a burning desire for one, united and peaceful country, she has enjoined Nigerians to embrace peace and love. She said this during the past Ramadan Season. “For any country to thrive, she needs love and peaceful co-existence to strengthen the social bond, and overcome any challenge confronting it as a nation. It is only when we allow love to grow in our hearts, irrespective of religion, language and tribe barrier that we can collectively as a nation surmount any challenge confronting us”.

Little wonder that she has, through her humility, demystified the exalted office of the First Lady in Nigeria. Not for her are the apparatchiks of office. Not for her is the loudness or frivolities normally linked with such political platform but to be the true soul-mate to her hard working and resourceful husband. She is there assisting in his daily sensitive and critical leadership choices and actions, with powerful prayers.

As Proverbs 31:10 states “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies”.  Stretching it further Proverbs 31:11-12 states that: “Her husband trusts her completely. With her, he has everything he needs. She does him good and not harm for as long as she lives”.

She was born into the Odukomaiya family in Epe, Lagos, on February 15, 1964. She attended St. Theresa’s College, Ibadan, Oyo, for her secondary school and Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos, where she graduated in Physics/Mathematics for her first degree in 1989 and later Masters Degree (MSc) in Public Administration in 1994.

Until her emergence as the wife of the Governor of the State of Lagos, she worked as staffer of the now defunct People’s Bank of Nigeria before she left to join Instant Finance Nigeria Limited and later Aguagem Consulting. She is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Rehoboth Chops and Confectioneries Limited. The Rehoboth bread is said to be very popular among Lagosians.

It would interest Nigerians to know that she and her husband were born at the same General Hospital in Epe! What a coincidence, many would exhale. But the truth of the matter is that their union is God’s own project that can never fail.

Her life is therefore, most inspiring to the younger generation of Nigerian ladies; instructive to those praying for a brighter future and food-for-thought for all lovers of God, willing to humble themselves at His feet and who He would raise, to stand  up to anything!

    • Ajanaku Idowu is the S.S.A Media & Strategy to Gov. Ambode
  • Bolanle Ambode’s heart of gold

    Bolanle Ambode’s heart of gold

That Lagos State First Lady Mrs. Bolanle Ambode really cares about the people is an understatement. This is, perhaps, why she is fondly referred to as ‘mother hen’ by her admirers.

Currently, Mrs. Ambode is expanding the definition of service to humanity through her different life-impacting programmes and projects. Contrary to flawed stereotyped opinion about First Ladies and their activities, Mrs. Ambode has demonstrated that compassion and passion truly make the difference.

Empathy is an integral part of her nature. She can’t just close her eyes to the sufferings of others. Her heart is full of compassion for people, especially the downtrodden.  She has had course on numerous occasions to extend hands of love and fellowship to many who had suffered diverse losses. In this case, her empathy for such people does not only lie in what she has to offer, but really in the manner she does so. She feels and bears other’s grief like it is a personal loss. That is her person. That is who she is.  It is no pretence or make- belief. It is real!

While some unduly raise their shoulders high when they are privileged to occupy transient public positions, others have the distinct trait of being able to remain calm and modest.  Considering the nature of my job, I have been privileged to interact with many ‘powerful’ individuals across the country. I am talking about men and women that traverse the corridors of power like colossus. Not mean men by any means!

But I make bold to say that Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, no doubt, operates at a different dimension in humility. I once had an appointment with her at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja office in the company of a few colleagues. As we were ushered into her office, I was expecting to see a woman gorgeously dressed and seated in the fullness of glory. But, how wrong! By the time we got into her conference room, she was standing just in front of us, waiting to usher us in with a warm handshake and a shy smile.

As a humble leader, Mrs. Ambode serves without allowing the office she occupies makes her look down on others. Both in outlook and behavior, she exemplifies unbelievable humility. She dresses modestly and addresses others reasonably.  It is, indeed, her humble mien that makes it quite uncomplicated for her to serve others. When we act out of humility, we give ourselves to serve no matter the personal costs in terms of reputation, time, money or other inconveniences.

The amiable First Lady has never used her position to lord it over others. She is more humble than haughty, more elegant than arrogant, more serene than snobbish, and inclusive rather than exclusive.  She is a thoughtful spokeswoman, glamorous hostess, cool and amazingly humble. Her voice has a smooth timbre and she speaks directly: no grandiloquent rhetoric.

Through her Foundation, Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative, HOFOWEM, Mrs. Ambode is giving a new definition to the art of social work and community development in the country. HOFOWEM’s key area of influence is Lagos State, particularly rural communities. One of the themes for the actualization of HOFOWEM’s goals is “Hope for Children through which it seeks to help rehabilitate Vulnerable Children and encourage the education of disadvantaged children in the society.  Similarly, the wellbeing and health care of deprived children is also one core aspect HOFOWEM deems vital in its plans. The “HOFOWEM Scholarship Scheme is another central part of the Hope for Children initiative.

Since the inauguration of HOFOWEM, Mrs. Ambode has used the platform to put smiles on faces of the less privileged in the society. HOFOWEM has (and it still does) concentrated on empowering widows and mothers with multiple births and also funded major surgical procedures for many people. This is not surprising as a crucial goal of HOFOWEM is to touch and transform lives as well as create sustainable means for the underprivileged in the society.

One good thing about HOFOWEM is that its focus is all encompassing. For instance, pupils, indigent students, widows, multiple birth mothers, orphans and many others have received varied degrees of helps from HOFOWEM at one time or the other. The Foundation did its maiden empowerment programme when widows, sick women and mothers with multiple births, were supported in various ways. It has since gone ahead to cover other grounds such as assisting indigent students, supporting widows and mothers with multiple births and a host of others.

HOFOWEM creatively covers assorted areas of interests as it comes up with a variety of innovative ideas aimed at bettering the lots of the hapless in the society. Through strategic and inventive thinking, it comes up with robust initiatives to address emerging and critical needs of the less privileged. Considering current economic realities in the country, HOFOWEM’s novel approach to social intervention is quite admirable. A major benefit of this strategy is that as new challenges surface, the people are not left in the cooler for too long before help comes.

Lots of people have benefited from several of HOFOWEM interventions. For instance, 2 year old John Akinbo who had a hole in the heart was sponsored to undergo surgery in India by the Foundation while Mrs. Folake Muritala  also successfully had a hip replacement surgery courtesy HOFOWEM. Similarly,

HOFOWEM has provided financial grants to several other bodies with which it shares same vision. These include Sebeccly Cancer Foundation ( to support cancer cases), Irede Foundation (to provide prosthetic limb for children with mobility issues), Children Development Center (to support children with autism)  Lydia Foundation (to rehabilitate prostitutes) among others

Lagos State is, indeed, extremely fortunate to have such an inspiring and compassionate First Lady who is a role model, an educator and an inspiration to many. As she continues in her service to God and humanity, one would like to admonish her with the words of celebrated American author and writer, Patricia Lynn Reilly: “Hold on to your courage: don’t let others preach it out of you”.

    Ambode empowers 103 widows

The Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), an initiative of Mrs Bolanle Ambode, wife of the Lagos State Governor, on Thursday empowered 103 widows to sustain their means of livelihood.

Ambode said at the empowerment programme in Lagos that the life of widow, especially a young one, was never enviable.

She said that the overall objective of the programme was to ensure that they were able to live happily and depend more on themselves after the death of their husbands.

The governor’s wife said that beneficiaries were divided into three categories, one of them being those that required skill acquisition — relatively young widows.

She said that the other beneficiaries were those that required equipment support to stabilise their businesses and widows that required financial assistance to expand their businesses.

“After careful analysis, we realised that though all the widows need support, the same type of assistance cannot work for everyone because of age differences and circumstances around them,” Ambode said.

She said that it was also the objective of the programme to properly educate and enlighten the women on their matrimonial rights under the law.

According to her, one cannot pretend to be ignorant of the cultural and social problems that women face upon the death of their husbands and in accessing whatever is left behind by their loved ones.

Ambode urged the beneficiaries to make the best use of benefits of the programme,  more importantly, the education on self-reliance, economic empowerment and rights education.

“It is an opportunity to help you rely on yourselves, rather than on external sources,” she said.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of HOFOWEM, Ms Oyefunke Adeleke, said that the programme was in commemoration of this year’s International Widows Day, held every June 23.

She said that millions of widows endure extreme poverty, homelessness, among others, while their situations often go unnoticed and are not captured by demographic statistics and humanitarian programmes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the widows got materials including deep freezers, generating sets, whipping machines, industrial gas cookers, grinding machines and bag sewing machines.
