  • Breaking: Bolton players threaten boycott over unpaid wages

    Bolton’s players are threatening to boycott Saturday’s Championship clash with Brentford and the final-day game at Nottingham Forest over unpaid wages.

    A statement from the players read in part: “With deep regret we have decided not to fulfil our remaining fixtures until we are paid.

    “The long running financial crisis at our club has been well documented. As has the fact that we, the playing staff have yet to receive our March salaries.

    “Five of our coaching staff are also yet to be paid for March. We have endeavoured to continue our training and playing commitments during this extremely difficult time, with seemingly no resolution in sight.

    “We have been operating in a near untenable environment for some time and it is the accumulation of these issues that have resulted in our decision.” (Skysports)

    Close to a decade after hanging his boots, former Super Eagles Captain Jay Jay  Okocha is still a major reference point in terms of contribution to the game with his free transfer from PSG to Bolton dubbed the second best free transfer after that of Sol Campbell from Tottenham to Arsenal.

    In top 10 best free transfers dished out by the Mail, Monday, the former Eintracht Frankfurt ace was engaged by Sam Allardyce for free at a time when he was Africa’s most expensive player

    In 1998, French side Paris Saint-Germain spent around £14 million to sign Okocha, making him the most expensive African player at the time. During his four-year stint with PSG, he played 84 matches and scored 12 goals.

    The report recalls that there was amazement in the soccer world when the midfield maestro joined Bolton for free and became a legend at Bolton alongside fellow free transfers Ivan Campo, Fernando Hierro and Youri Djokaeff, and helped the club to three top-half finishes in a row. He is best remembered for a handful of stunning strikes and sensational tricks, which made him a favourite among all fans.

    Other players who made the lists include current Manchester United Sensation, Zlatan Ibrahimovic who moved on free transfer interestingly from PSG.

    A giant of European football, with titles in Holland, Italy, Spain and France, Ibrahimovic arrived with all his showmanship, but with plenty of doubters. Now 35 years old, he had been impressive in Ligue 1, but there were questions over whether that would prepare him for Premier League football.

    Four goals in his first three games was enough response and and 24 in 36 so far became a mission statement. On the players in the list include Ruud Gullit (Sampdoria to Chelsea), Gary McAllister (Coventry to Liverpool),Gianluca Vialli (Juventus to Chelsea), Michael Ballack (Bayern to Chelsea), Demba Ba (West Ham to Newcastle),Kevin Davies (Southampton to Bolton) and Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough to Fulham.

    Bolton sign Shola Ameobi

    Championship side Bolton Wanderers have signed Nigeria striker Shola Ameobi on a short-term deal.

    The ex-England Under-21 international had impressed on trial at the club. The 34-year-old has spent the majority of his career at Newcastle after progressing through their academy and spent time on loan at Stoke in 2008.

    After leaving the Magpies he moved to Turkish side Gaziantep BB and spent the final six months of last season at Crystal Palace. He scored 11 goals in 21 games during Newcastle United’s season in the Championship in 2009-10.

    Ameobi, who has 10 Nigeria caps, joins a Bolton side currently bottom of the table with just one win in all competitions so far this season.

    Mbong happy with Bolton training

    Nigerian striker Joseph Mbong has said he is delighted that he was immediately accepted by the Bolton Wanderers old timers when he began practicing with the Championship side on Monday.

    Bolton Wanderers, who once had Austin Okocha and Lateef Elford-Alliyu on their payroll, will run the rule over the 17 – year – old until Sunday.

    “They have treated me professionally since I came here. I enjoyed the first day of training since it’s different from what I experience in Malta.

    “I wasn’t treated like a stranger by the players I met. They all asked my name, guided me through training and all that,” Mbong told SL10.ng. Joseph Mbong comes off contract with Hibernians in Malta at the end of this season.

    Dougie Freedman joins Bolton

    Dougie Freedman has left Crystal Palace and become the new manager of Bolton, the London club have confirmed.

    Freedman, 38, was given permission to talk to Wanderers on Monday afternoon after a U-turn from Palace, who had initially refused to allow contact hours earlier.

    And Bolton have wasted little time coming to an agreement with the 38-year-old, with Palace breaking the news via an official statement.

    “Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that first-team manager Dougie Freedman has joined Bolton Wanderers,” read the statement on the club’s website.

    “The board of the club would like to put on record their thanks to Dougie for all his efforts over the past couple of years and their disappointment over the events of the past few days.

    “The search for a replacement starts immediately.

    “The team at tonight’s game against Barnsley will be taken by assistant manager Lennie Lawrence and first-team coach Curtis Fleming.”

    Freedman succeeds fellow Scot Owen Coyle at the Reebok Stadium after Coyle was sacked on October 9.

    Having been unable to keep Bolton in the Barclays Premier League last term, Coyle presided over just three wins from the club’s opening 11 games in all competitions this season.

    Caretaker manager Jimmy Phillips duly took charge of Saturday’s 3-2 home win over Bristol City as the Trotters showed spirit to come back from two goals down.

    But the rumour mill was already in full swing over the weekend and Bolton chairman Phil Gartside made his move for Freedman on Sunday.

    The former Palace striker was named Eagles manager on a permanent basis in January 2011 and led the club to a League Cup semi-final last season.

    His credentials have continued to rise this term with Palace currently riding high in fourth place in the npower Championship and on an eight-match unbeaten run, which included a 1-0 win at Bolton on September 29.
