•Maximum use of local intelligence, by security agencies, will help to defeat Boko Haram

For a city that has had more than its fair share of terrorists’ onslaught, last week’s attack, by Boko Haram, on the Central Mosque in Kano during the Jumat service, speaks to the fierce urgency of collective action to bring the activities of the murderous group to an end.

Black Friday indeed it was, when three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) — two reportedly planted inside the mosque and the other outside — ripped through the hallowed ground of the ancient mosque, where the Emir of Kano traditionally leads the Friday prayers.

In the end, more than 120 worshippers lay dead, with multiple scores injured. There have since emerged reports – although uncomfirmed – of residents foiling an attack by female bombers on Murtala Specialist Hospital Kano, where many of the injured were taken for treatment.

Considering that it has been nearly five years since the Christmas Day bombing in Madallah, a suburb of Abuja, the Kano massacre immediately indicates how far the nation still has to go in its battle against the Boko Haram sect — and what little dent we have made on this murderous menace.

Between then and now, the terrorists have grown bolder and more sophisticated; just as their capacity to inflict damage on the nation and the Nigerian military have since gone on steady rise. Inversely, the state’s capacity to deal with them appears greatly and tragically diminished.

Today, they have somehow upped their pyschological advantage choosing, as it were, soft targets whenever and wherever it pleases them. In the course of their murderous activities, nothing is seen or held by the group as sacrosanct; schools, hospitals, churches and mosques are simply fair game in their warped vision to create their Islamic enclave.

Ominously, the group has since gone from hit-and-run guerilla tactics, with bases in the bush, to as far as carving up strategic towns and villages as their territories.

There have, understandably, been a lot of condemnations in the aftermath of the latest bloodbath by the maniacal group.  These condemnations are in order. Boko Haram’s ritual of shedding innocent blood deserves to be condemned by every right-thinking citizen.

If it seems ironic that a group that describes itself as “Islamic” would not see anything wrong with mass slaughter of Muslim children as we have seen in Buni Yadi, Gujba, both in Yobe, or even the School of Hygiene in Kano among others, it seems even more unimaginable that the group would ever care to draw the line when it came to a mosque.

Beyond the routine of angry denunciations and the resort to the blame game, however, it seems about time citizens banded together to confront the menace which threatens us all.

It is in this context that we find the statement credited to the Emir of Kano to the effect that the attack took over two months in planning rather puzzling, if not unsettling.

We are minded to ask: how did the revered monarch come by the information? What use did he make of them? Did he alert the security agencies when he got the information?

If no, why not? If he did, what steps did the security agencies take to forestall its occurence? These questions are pertinent because in matters of intelligence, every piece of information is supposed to count. And to the extent that absence of critical intelligence is said to be a major issue in the current war against the insurgency, it is expected that those who have privileged information should make them available to the security agencies.

Going forward, there are important lessons to take from the collaboration between the Civilian Joint Task Force and the Military Joint Task Force.

While it may seem premature to conclude that the collaboration would sooner extirpate the activities of the group, there is increasing evidence to suggest that local knowledge and intelligence from the Civilian-JTF are actually helping in the war against the terrorists.

We urge the military to work more closely with the local people in its continuing engagement with Boko Haram.

  • Today’s bomb

I am going down the street to pick a piece of bread

The crowded street will only stall my  steps

and hunger, my morning companion, has  a few minutes to say goodbye.

Boom, boom, I heard amidst cries

    Was that a bomb?

    Yes, screamed a scurrying back

I am in no mood for the body count

Some people scampered about in fear

I stood still and saw in the distance a                             bloodied face

and another man lifting a child limp of                       limbs in

hurried alarm for a car to take the dying to                the hospital

If, that is, the car does not bear a hooded                      omen

    Of unexplored men and shrapnel

I looked at myself, crown to toe, I am

as new as the morning dew

I have nothing to worry about, and I move                on

To pick my piece of bread and wish the                      morning companion goodbye

    Today has had its bomb.

  • Bomb blast in Bauchi, several dead

A bomb blast has been reported in Azare, Bauchi state on Sunday evening.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Lawal Shehu, who confirmed the blast said rescue operation was in progress.

    •Ize-Iyamu: governor to blame

Edo State has described the claim of a bomb attack in Benin, the state capital, and subsequent statement credited to a politician, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as another phase of alleged desperation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to causea crisis.

The government said it was intended to spread falsehood and sow fear in the minds of the people to simulate a crisis.

Commissioner for information & Orientation Louis Odion said this in a statement yesterday after Ize-Iyamu spoke to reporters in Benin, blaming Governor Adams Oshiomhole for the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) at a mini-estate belonging to him.

The explosion reportedly occurred at about 10:30pm on Saturday night at the estate located on Dennis Osadebey Avenue in the state capital, which also houses Shalom Dental Clinic, being operated by Ize-Iyamu’s wife.

But Odion said no sooner had the purported “bomb attack” been reported by an online medium with further claim of bomb explosion within Government House, whenIze-Iyamu quickly called the media briefing to accuse the governor as the explosion’s mastermind.

The commissioner noted that the report of a bomb explosion at the Government House was “patently false”, adding that “by Ize-Iyamu’s account and his haste to accuse Comrade Oshiomhole of culpability for a supposed crime yet to be investigated, we are persuaded to believe he is merely acting out a script”.

The statement said it was “laughable that any sane man” would be “targeting an obscure clinic that is, at best, now moribund.”

It also reads: “Mr. Ize-Iyamu’s wild allegation fits into PDP’s jaded style of stage-managing assaults on its agents to be used as pretext by its thugs to attack officials of Edo State Government and agents of the APC.

“Again, Mr. Ize-Iyamu’s reference to cultists being engaged against PDP is ironic and laughable. Even as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Oshiomhole was known for his non-violence philosophy. On the contrary, Edo people know those with the history of cultism and violence dating back to their school days.

“Against the backdrop of this latest purported attack on his wife’s clinic, which we believe was stage-managed, we wish to alert the police to put Pastor Ize-Iyamu and his co-travellers under close watch as allegations of this nature had always been the prelude to staging an attack on APC members in the past.

“Again, we call on the PDP to look within its ranks to get to the root of the attack on a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Rasaq Momoh.  We also call on the police to thoroughly probe top leaders of the PDP for the attack on the Edo State Legislative Quarters penultimate Saturday.”

Ize-Iyamu, while briefing reporters on the explosion, alleged that Oshiomhole had consistently threatened him ever since he dumped the APC for the PDP.

“This is a clinic built by my wife. Oshiomhole cannot destroy my property. I received a call from one of the occupants of the house at about 10:45 yesterday (Saturday) that an explosive had been detonated at the compound. I quickly rushed there and I actually found out that a bomb was detonated.

“The security agencies saw the wires and batteries used across the road as well as the footprints of the people. The target obviously was my wife’s clinic, but the bomb detonated at the gate house. To God be the glory, the security had strolled to parade the compound when they bombed the gate house.

“I want to say that I am not too surprise at what happened, though the dimension is shocking. I categorically say that I hold the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, responsible for what has happened.”

Also, the state Police Command confirmed yesterday that an improvised explosive device (IED) was responsible for the explosion at the estate.

Deputy Public Relations Officer, Ejiroro Ahwara, in a statement, said the IED was made up of two tiger batteries of 1.5 volt each connected to a long wire, adding that it was thrown into the estate from the outside.

It said the explosion only affected the surrounding ceiling boards at the estate security post and part of the main gate.

He said some suspects have been arrested while the IED has been recovered by the bomb disposal unit for analysis.

  • Chile condemns bomb attack

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has condemned a bomb attack on a shopping centre in a busy metro station in the capital Santiago on Monday.

The attack, in which 14 people were injured, is one of the worst since democracy was restored in 1990.

Ms Bachelet called it a “terrorist act, one of the most cowardly we have seen”.

There have been around 200 bomb attacks in Santiago in the past decade, with anarchist groups claiming responsibility for many of them.

No-one has so far admitted carrying out this latest bombing. There have been about 200 blasts in Santiago over the past decade, but this is the most serious so far

The president said she would convene a meeting of her security committee on Tuesday to decide how to proceed.

“What’s happened is horrible, an abominable act, but Chile is and will continue to be a safe country,” Ms Bachelet said.

The explosive device went off at lunchtime at a fast-food restaurant in an underground shopping centre at the Escuela Militar metro station.

About 150,000 people pass through the station daily.

Joanna Magneti, who works in the centre, described the scene: “I was having lunch when I felt the bang. When I went to see what had happened, I saw lots of smoke, people running and shouting, a youngster who was badly injured and a woman with an injured hand.”

Workers said the corridors of the shopping centre were filled with smoke following the blast

Three people were badly wounded in the blast, and another 11 are also being treated. Ms Bachelet said it was “one of the most cowardly acts we’ve seen because it had as its objective to maim, spread fear and even kill innocent people”.

Chile’s Interior Minister said Ms Bachelet mother, Angela Jeria, had been in the area at the time the bomb went off.

He said she had been shopping in the centre, but had not been injured. However, he did not indicate whether she may have been the target of the attack.

  • Eid prayers: Police uncover bomb in vehicle near Mosque

Eid prayers: Police uncover bomb in vehicle near Mosque

The Kano State Police Command has uncovered a bomb laden vehicle, parked very close to a mosque by suspected terrorists.
The explosives were planted in a white Peugeot 406 car at about 1.am on Sunday which the terrorists would have detonated during the Eid prayers attended by thousands of worshipers.
Speaking to reporter at the Bompai Police Command Headquarters on Sunday in Kano, the State Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba said:” We are here to explain some of the activities the Kano Police Command have been engaged in and part of the achievements we recorded over the night.”
”We are aware that there is going to be Eid-Fitr prayers at the various praying grounds in Kano. We have been all out before now to ensure that we have a hitch-free sallah celebrations.
”We have mapped out our strategies, which yielded a very positive result. The vehicle you are seeing here is a white Peugeot 406 car, which was primed with high calibre Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and was parked strategically at a spot, an area where there is going to be a very heavy crowd this morning for the Eid prayers .
”Their motive is to blow up as many Muslim faithful as possible but to God be the glory, we were able to move round and examined the vehicle, screened it properly and discovered that there are explosives in it.
”So my anti-bomb squad swiftly moved to the area where they quickly detonated it by 1: am and moved the vehicle out of the scene to the Police Headquarters.
”We thank God we have been able to save a lot of lives as a result of this discovery, as the vehicle was primed at 1:am for the purpose of blowing it off this morning during the Eid prayers.
”The location of the primed vehicle is close to the Isyaku Rabiu Jumat mosque. The explosive is of high calibre and it was a big one that was primed in the vehicle.
”At the time the anti-bomb squad was trying to detonate it after breaking the side glass to gain entrance into the vehicle, it caused a collateral damage. And that collateral damage would have been on the people of Kano.
”So, we want to us this opportunity to express our very deep appreciation to the good people of Kano for the support they have been and still rendering to law enforcement agencies in the state, and hope that it will be sustained and we can assure you that we will do our very best to give our best to the people of Kano.
”This information came through a responsible Kano indigene,” Shinaba explained.

  • The unfortunate Kaduna twin bomb attacks

The unfortunate Kaduna twin bomb attacks

The twin attack on the two prominent Nigerians which took place in Kaduna could be described as dangerous, callous and unfortunate to the peaceful and cooperate existence of this country.

The attempt on the lives of the two highly respected Nigerians who are revered in different parts of this country for political and religious affiliations, shows those desperados of this dastardly act are out to throw this country into political and religious crises, which would not augur well for the peaceful co-existence of this country.

Both Sheik Dahiru Bauchi and Gen. Mohammed Buhari have contributed to the development of this country in their chosen fields, hence their being accorded esteemed respect across the country.

The activities of those responsible for the twin attack did not take into cognisance the great implication of what they intend to do the collective interest of the country, which would have a great impact on the stability of this country.

We must appreciate that God in his infinity mercy did allow this unpatriotic persons to achieve this myopic and undesirable desire of plunging this country into another mayhem, which no responsible Nigerian will support.

We should continue to be vigilant in our daily activities to stem the ugly trend we are witnessing at this critical period of our nation’s history, that has never been seen, not even during the civil war that took place in the 60s.

No sane Nigerian would support these dastardly acts of spilling blood of innocent Nigerians who are already impoverished going about securing their day-to-day means of livelihood.

We pray that those who lost their lives in the Kaduna twin blast would have peace of grave and God would console their families, while also praying for those injured to recover quickly.

The government should not rest from its responsibilities by assuring the citizens of providing security to all. Nigerians should report any form of suspicious movement within their environments.

Nigeria will surely overcome such agonising period she finds herself and

It will continue to remain steadfast in loving one another.

  • Bomb explosion: 24 hrs curfew imposed on Kaduna

Bomb explosion: 24 hrs curfew imposed on Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor,  Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has condemned Wednesday’s the twin bomb blasts in the state capital,  describing it  as the height of ‘cowardice’ by those bent on creating tension in the state.

He announced  a 24 hours curfew on the metropolis to enable security agencies restore normalcy to the town.

A statement issued by his media aide, Ahmed Maiyaki read that, “following the unfortunate situation, a twenty four (24) hours curfew has been imposed on Kaduna metropolis with immediate effect, to enable security agencies restore normalcy”.

The Governor said the blasts were clear manifestation of the resolve by ‘agents of darkness’ to soak the land with blood of innocent people for no just cause.

He said “enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives. This blast, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life”.

Governor Yero said despite the success recorded in improvement of security in Kaduna State, it is obvious that more still needs to be done to ensure safety of our people at all times and in all places.

He therefore called on people in the state to see such unwarranted attacks on innocent people across the state as aggression by evil against good that must be collectively condemned by all.

The Governor urged  people in the state to be more vigilant with happenings around them and to also avoid unnecessarily crowded areas.

“The time has come for us to eschew all our differences and confront these brazen attacks as united people.
Those behind these attacks have no regards for whatever diversity as their victims cut across all ethnic and religious divides. It is a responsibility on all of us to unite against this common enemy.”

Yero commiserated with families of victims of the blasts and directed security agencies to intensify surveillance while they pursue perpetrators of the blast.
