People bombing pipelines not ordinary Nigerians, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday maintained that the people involved in the blowing up of oil pipelines in the Niger Delta region are not ordinary Nigerians going by the sophistication of equipment they are using.

By going into the sea for almost 70 kilometers to blow pipelines with ease, he said, has necessitated the need for some professional associations with high competences to talk to their members to ensure they were not deploying their skills in a negative way to the detriment of the country.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa after his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE), led by its President, Mrs. Joana Maduka.

He said: “How can ordinary Nigerians go into the deep sea almost 70 kilometers to blow installations, they are not ordinary Nigerians. So you have to talk to your members.”

Disagreeing with the delegation that Nigerian engineers are under utilized, he said that 99 per cent of those that constructed the four refineries in the country were Nigerian engineers.

Stressing that the government has always taken engineers seriously in the task of nation building, he described Nigerian engineers as those whose capacity to learn is unparalleled.

Regretting that none of the four refineries in the country are currently working, he blamed the country’s leadership for the situation and not the engineers.

“Nigerian engineers are competent and cost effective. I respect you all, it takes a lot to be a competent engineers”. He stated

Speaking earlier, Maduka pointed out that Nigerian engineering companies have performed laudably well in the last one year in the procurement and construction of a 600 megawatt power generating plant and a 330KV switching station, the biggest in the national grid.

She said that the role of an academy of engineering all over the world is to serve as Think Tank for the technological and economic development of a nation.

“Countries like China, USA, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia are examples of nations that have harnessed the benefits of their engineering academies for economic progress. Fellows of the Academy of Engineering are Engineers who have reached the peak of their careers and are invited to join”.

She noted that the anti-corruption efforts of the administration was a move in the right direction as it will bring about economic transformation of the country.

The group also backed the move by the Buhari’s administration to fix all the infrastructural deficit in the country.

She said: “This effort is very germane to the development of our nation. For this to be done effectively and efficiently, inputs are required from all cadres of engineering disciplines.

“The physical indices of development of any country are engineering based like roads, railways, water supply, power, housing and other infrastructure. However, Nigerian Engineers are underutilized for the tasks and challenges of nation building.

“For the country to attain sustainable growth status, the Nigerian engineers need to be adequately engaged in planning, policy formulation, consultancy and construction as well as industrial processes of production and manufacturing.

“Furthermore, the fact is that Nigeria is grossly under-engineered as there are insufficient engineering professionals taking the population per capita basis. For example, in China, between 2000 and 2013, all the nine members of the Standing Committee (Ministers) of the Politburo were trained engineers.

“Currently, about half of the cabinet ministers in Singapore are engineers and in China,  70 per cent of the cabinet are engineers”. She stated

She disclosed that the Nigerian Academic Engineering is currently made up of 140 fellows.

The meeting was convened by the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig- Gen. Paul Boroh with the Phase one, two, three ex-militants of the Amnesty Programme from Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and the Edo states.

He added that there were plans to provide welfare and housing scheme for the ex-militants.

Brig.-Gen Boro said: “This amnesty programme is our programme and what has brought us so far is something that is happening now that affects all of us, whether you are living in the creek or outside. It is the issue of pipeline vandalism which I understand some people do it to make people feel bad or get recognised.

“If you have issues, if you have misunderstanding, if you have anything worrying you at all, you should discuss it with the person you fell can solve the problem rather than go an destroy pipeline that is affecting the whole environment.

“The common factor is security challenges we are facing in our areas, in our region that is affecting the economy of the country. It is another aspect that we should not be indulging in. if you have an issue with anybody please discuss it with the person better than bombing pipeline that would affect the environment. Personally it makes me feel bad that we don’t know how to solve our problem.”

Brig.-Gen Boroh, who was optimistic about the meeting, said: “We have all resolved that we will put our heads and hands and all in all together to prevent the re-occurrence of this type of thing.

Brussels Bombing: Nigeria Police caution airport users

The Lagos Airport Police Command on Thursday advised passengers and other airport users to be more vigilant following the recent terrorist attack on the Brussels Airport in Belgium.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Joseph Alabi, gave the advice while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that no fewer than 30 people were killed and many others injured when the departure hall of the airport was bombed by suspected terrorists.

Alabi told NAN that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, had ordered for the beefing up of security across all airports in Nigeria as a result of the incident.

He, however, said that passengers and other airport users had a duty to promptly notify the police about anything unusual, particularly within the airport environment.

“Our men are always on ground. The officer in charge of operations is on duty 24 hours.

“The Divisional Police Officers are always in their offices at the airport and they can report any incident to them and prompt action will be taken,’’ Alabi said.

According to him, two sniffer dogs and additional police officers have been deployed to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport to ensure the safety and security of the place.

Alabi said this was in addition to the screening of passengers outside the terminal which was being done by the Police Anti-Bomb Squad in collaboration with other security agencies.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police, MMIA, Mrs Victory Menta, has deployed more of our men to every nook and cranny of the airport and they are on 24-hour surveillance.

“I believe that by God’s grace, there will be no evil occurrence here because our men are fully on ground to monitor the situation of things.

“My advice to all travelers is that they should not be afraid of any evil occurrence at the airport. The airport police command will not allow any untoward event and so they should remain calm’’.

2010 bombing: Victims disclosed at trial

About six years after they were killed in the 2010 Independence Day bomb explosion in Abuja, the Federal Government yesterday disclosed the identities of some of those killed in the incident.

They are Onnah Alfred, Romanus Alumonah, John Arua, Verty Bala, Joshua Umaru, Onyema Ozioko  and Haruna Tijani.

Their names were contained in documents tendered yesterday by lead prosecution lawyer Alex Iziyon (SAN), at the resumed hearing in the trial of Charles Okah and Obi Nwanbueze.

The Federal Government accused Okah and Nwanbueze of being behind the bomb explosion.

The documents included certified true copies of contact details of the bomb blast victims,  receipts issued by the National Hospital,  a document, titled: ‘Form B -Death report to coroner, particulars of coroner and particulars of deceased.

Others are certified true copies of post-mortem examination, order for post-mortem examination, report of doctors and warrants to bury the deceased.

The prosecution tendered the documents through a witness, Dr. Jubrin Paul, identified as the chief pathologist of the National Hospital. He was subpoenaed.

Led in evidence by Iziyon, Paul tendered a list of victims, including the dead and survivors.

Defence lawyers Samuel Zibiri and Oghenenovo Otemu did not oppose admission of the documents.

Paul, the 10th prosecution witness, put the number of dead at seven.

He said although the bodies were brought to the National Hospital on the day of the incident, autopsy was conducted on them on October 12.

At cross-examination, Paul denied participating in the evacuation of bodies.

He said: “Investigative police officers came with a request for autopsy which bore names of the deceased.”

The witness said the bodies could still be identified when they were brought.

The prosecution also called Fatai Adeyinka, who sold the Mazda 626 salon car, allegedly used to convey the bombs to the scene on October 1, 2010.

Adeyinka, the 11th prosecution witness, described himself as an auto-electrician, who sold fairly-used cars.

The witness said the Mazda  belonged to Mr. Ogundimu.

Adeyinka said he sold the car on behalf of Ogundimu to the second accused (Obi)   on September 17, 2010.

At cross-examination, Adeyinka confirmed that the change of ownership was not signed by the alleged buyer (Nwabueze).

  • 10 killed in Adamawa suicide bombing

No fewer than 10 people were killed yesterday when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a busy market in Gombi, Adamawa State, residents and a Red Cross official said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the attack bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram, which has been using suicide bombers since the army, helped by neighbours Chad and Cameroon, expelled the group from territory it had captured previously.

A male suicide bomber attacked the market, killing eight people and wounding 28, said a local Red Cross official.

Two traders at the market put the death toll at 10 while a police spokesman said four had been killed and 17 wounded.

Gombe lies near the border with Borno State, where the insurgency started.

Two suicide bombers had on Wednesday caused 18 deaths in Chibok, Borno State.

The military authorities confirmed yesterday that the Chibok bombers were men wearing hijabs with explosives strapped to their backs to look like babies.

Such attacks are blamed on Boko Haram Islamic extremists who have turned to suicide bombing of soft targets since troops last year forced them out of towns and villages.

On Monday, four suicide bombers attacked a market and town in northern Cameroon, killing at least 35 people and wounding 65, according to officials who said the bombers came from Nigeria.

On Thursday, two female suicide bombers targeted a school in northern Cameroon. Officials said they killed only themselves and wounded some students.

Chibok community leader, Pogu Bitrus, said the toll was higher than originally given: 17 civilians, one soldier and three suicide bombers.

Bitrus said six bombers entered the town. Military spokesman, Col. Mustapha Ank, confirmed two were disguised as women.

Chibok and Boko Haram came to the world’s attention after the Islamic extremists’ mass abduction of schoolgirls in April 2014.

  • Outrage over bombing of Kogi radio station

Outrage over bombing of Kogi radio station

•IG orders tight security around media houses

THE Federal Government and Kogi State yesterday led other eminent personalities in condemning the bombing of TAO FM radio station in Okene by unknown assailants.

The radio station was bombed at about 8p.m on Monday by unknown gunmen, who pretended to have come for commercial transaction.

Information Minister Senator Patricia Akwashiki described the attack as a criminal act of arson and an assault on democracy and the freedom of expression.

She called on security agencies to immediately launch an investigation into the attack, with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice.

The minister, in a statement by the ministry’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Joseph Mutah, stressed that for democracy to consolidate, citizens must imbibe the culture and temperament for the freedom of expression to flourish without any inhibition.

Mrs. Akwashiki urged the people to follow the part of peace, and where they feel aggrieved, they should approach the law court for redress and claim damages instead of resorting to self-help through criminal enterprise.

The minister called on the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security for media houses and journalists to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

She restated the commitment of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration to the freedom of expression, which she said, is cardinal in a democracy.

She commiserated with the relations of the victims of the bomb attack and prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

Kogi State government yesterday said it would assist security agents to track down the perpetrators that claimed the lives of four workers.

The state government, in an official reaction, said it would do all within its powers to help bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice.

Deputy Governor Yomi Awoniyi, in a statement, decried the bombing.

He said the government has urged security agents not to leave any stone unturned in unraveling those behind the heinous and dastardly act, adding that they must not be allowed to go unpunished.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Michael Abu, the deputy governor expressed shock over the action of the bombers, describing it as despicable and unimaginable.

He said the establishment of Tao FM by the renowned broadcaster and pioneer Director-General (DG) of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Tom Adaba, was the best thing to have happened to the people of Ebiraland, wondering why anybody should think of bringing down the station.

He noted that the radio outfit played a significant role in the peaceful conduct of the just concluded general elections through constant sensitisation, and opened their doors to all candidates without bias.

Sympathising with the management and workers of the media organisation, Awoniyi prayed God to grant the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved ones in the incident.

The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ado Ibrahim, who was at the premises of the radio station, said hoodlums and assailants have been terrorising the land and going away free.

He vowed that the inhuman act would not be allowed to go unchecked.

“This  radio has been serving the people, the workers have done what we did not expect in the area of sensitising the community on how best they can live together in harmony.

“As a traditional ruler, I will not allow this issue to be swept under the carpet. The perpetrators of this heinous act must be uncovered,” the monarch said.

The state Commissioner of Police,  Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, assured the community that the command would go into intensive investigation to get to the root of the situation.

Appealing to the people to assist the police with useful information to aid it in its investigations, the police boss promised to beef up security around the radio station so that the workers can perform their legitimate duties.

The Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, decried the bombing.

Abatemi-Usman, in a statement by Michael Jegede, his special assistant on Media and Publicity, expressed shock over the action of the bombers, describing it as despicable and unimaginable.

The senator said the establishment of Tao FM was the best thing to have happened to the people of Ebiraland, wondering why anybody could think of bringing it down.

He stated that the radio house has since its formation been known for its balanced reportage and presentation of programmes designed to promote peace and unity in the area.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has ordered tight security around the country’s media houses.

Arase, who gave the order in a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Force spokesman, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, expressed concern over the recent attacks on media houses and journalists.

He said the order was in line with the mandate of the force to protect lives and property of the citizenry under the law.

Arase acknowledged the valuable roles of the media in the enthronement of democracy in the country and advised citizens to be more vigilant.

He also advised citizens to be proactive and report any suspicious movement or persons to the police promptly for appropriate action.

  • Peterside condemns bombing of Okrika APC secretariat

Peterside condemns bombing of Okrika APC secretariat

Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has condemned the multiple bomb attacks on the party’s secretariat in Okrika.

The APC candidate was accompanied to the scene of the explosion by the party’s senatorial candidate Andrew Uchendu, House of Representatives candidate Maureen Tamuno, party leaders in the local government and other APC supporters.

He expressed shock at the attack, which he said signalled danger, ahead of next month’s elections, if not checked.

Peterside said: “It is very sad and unfortunate that some persons have chosen this path. If you notice, there has been a pattern of violence. On January 6, when we had our presidential rally at Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium, you would have noted that some of our party members from Abonnema, Degema and Asari-Toru were attacked around Sama Junction. Those coming from Khana and Gokana were also attacked around Sakpenwa Junction. Some other groups coming for the same rally were attacked around Elele.

“Fingers point to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). We have raised these issues with the police commissioner and the security agencies, but not much action has been seen.

“Aside from this, you would have also observed a trend even among them. A few days ago, they were in Abonnema to campaign and a faction of the PDP fought with another faction of the PDP. Two persons have been confirmed dead. They have also exhibited several other acts of violence at many other instances. That portends serious danger for our democracy.

“I don’t want to believe that this signposts what to expect on February 14 and 28 because Rivers people are peace-loving; we reject violence.

“I am optimistic that the police will do something about this pattern of violence we are witnessing. If they don’t, they will force ordinary people to resort to self-help, and self-help does not do anyone any good.”
