Argentina World Cup-winning captain and Inter Miami forward, Lionel Messi last night won the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time at an impressive ceremony in Paris , France while Spain and Barcelona star Aitana Bonmati won her first Ballon d’Or Feminin award.

Messi who won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009 and his seventh in 2021, masterminded Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, scoring twice during the match before scoring again during a penalty shoot-out, to help his team defeat 2018 winners France.

He also scored 32 goals in 55 league games for PSG, helping the side clinch the Ligue 1 title.

The 25-year-old Bonmati, on the other hand, won the Champions League and Spanish title with Barcelona last season plus the World Cup with Spain.

Other winners on the night include England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham who was handed the Kopa Trophy as the best young player in the world.

The Socrates Prize which identifies the best social initiative, was won by Vinicius Jr won for helping under-privileged Brazilian children.

Barcelona was named Women’s Club of the Year as the Spanish outfit won the UEFA Champions League and Spanish title last season and they had six players on the Ballon d’Or Feminin shortlist.

The night also belonged to another Argentine, the former Oxford United loanee Emiliano Martinez who helped his country to clinch the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 won the Yashin Trophy for the best keeper in the world.

But it was Norway’s international, Erling Haaland , that got the Gerd Muller Trophy for his prolific scoring form that saw him scored some 52 goals for Manchester City, who in the meantime was named the men’s club of the year after bagging the Treble last season.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen made history as the first Napoli player to make the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or rankings as the Super Eagles forward finished 8th overall.

The Nigeria international significantly contributed to Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years becoming the 2022-23 top-scorer in the league with 26 goals in 32 appearances. Napoli also reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season, the best result for the Partenopei in Europe’s elite competition.

Osimhen netted five times in six Champions League games last season and individual achievements, combined with Napoli’s results earned the 24-year-old a spot in the top 10 of this year’s Ballon d’Or.

His placement is reportedly the best result ever for a Napoli player according to journalist Giuseppe Pastore, given that the previous record belonged to Ruud Krol, who ended 15th in 1980.

The other players included in the top 10 are Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Lylian Mbappé, Leo Messi, Luka Modric, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Vini Jr.

Osimhen’s teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished 17th , while Inter stars Lautaro Martinez and Nicolò Barella finished 20th and 27th respectively.
