The Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA) has embarked on a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Youth Development and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to promote youth participation in agriculture.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on youth empowerment and food sustainability.
BORBDA’s Managing Director, Dr. Olufemi Adekanmbi, led the Authority’s management team on courtesy visits to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, and the Director-General of NDE, Silas Ali Agara.
During the engagements, Dr. Adekanmbi presented BORBDA’s proposal to integrate NYSC Corps members into its agricultural programmes.

The proposal includes providing access to irrigated farmland, mechanized farming services, agricultural inputs, accommodation, security, and other essential support.

The Managing Director emphasized that the initiative will equip corps members with hands-on agricultural training, enabling them to emerge as full-fledged agropreneurs in areas such as crop farming, aquaculture, and poultry production.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande expressed strong support for the proposal and pledged the Ministry’s collaboration.
At the National Directorate of Employment, discussions centered on leveraging BORBDA’s vast resources in partnership with the NDE to empower youth through agriculture.
Adekanmbi stressed the importance of creating the right environment for youth participation in agriculture, stating, “Young people must begin to see agriculture as a business, not merely a vocation.”
He added that training would also include water resource management and agro-logistics to encourage sustainable practices and long-term engagement.
The initiative is set to benefit young people across BORBDA’s operational areas, including Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Delta States.
By integrating youth into the agricultural value chain, BORBDA aims to achieve national food security goals outlined in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that activating vast hectares of arable land under River Basin Authorities through the active participation of young people is crucial to achieving sustainable food security.
The partnership is a significant step towards promoting youth empowerment and food sustainability in the country
