  • Atiku’s witnesses claim presidential election results were falsified

Nine witnesses called on Thursday by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar insisted that results of the elections were falsified to favour the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari.

The witnesses, who said they served as Local Government and state Collation Agents of the PDP,made sunday allegations of result manipulation, voters’ intimidation and harassment, mutilation and tearing of result sheets, and cancellation of election where the petitioners won.

At cross-examination, majority of the witnesses were however unable to substantiate the allegations as contained in their written statements, which they adopted as their evidence in chief before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Nicholas Msheliza, who said he acted as PDP’s state collation agent for Borno State claimed that virtually all the result sheets from the various local governments in the state were mutilated.

Msheliza also claimed that accreditation of voters did not take place in over  200 polling units out of the 3,933 statutory polling units in the state.

Also alleging over-voting in the state, Msheliza said the 911, 786 declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “was well over the accredited voters across the state”.

But, under cross-examination, lawyer to INEC, Yunus Usman (SAN), the witness said he did not have the true figures of votes actually scored by the parties.

When asked by lawyer to APC,  Adeniyi Akintola (SAN),if he visited all the polling units in the state  during the election, Msheliza said, “I could not have visited the polling units because of the peculiar security challenges in Borno State.”

The lawyer drew Msheliza’s attention to part of his statement, where he said he “observed in the course of transmitting the results from local government result sheets to the state result sheets wrong figures were being entered by INEC officials.”

Akintola then asked the witness to reconcile his claim that the results were already collated before he got to the collation centre with his assertion,in his written statement,  that he observed when the figures were being tendered, Msheilla said “They were merely announcing the results to the hearing of people present.”

John Makama, who served as the PDP collation agent for Sanga Local Government Kaduna, claimed that results were wrongly cancelled by INEC officials in some polling units won by his party, with the intention of reducing the votes of the petitioners.

When asked by Usman to produce the actual scores of his party, which he claimed were cancelled, the witness said he did not have them.

Makama said the result sheets containing the actual scores were submitted to his party, but that they were not attached to his statement that was tendered before the tribunal.

When asked by Buhari’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali (SAN) whether he would be surprised to know that cancellation of results is not one of the grounds of the petitioners’ case in respect of his Local Government, the witness kept mute.

On how he knew that the allegedly cancelled results belonged to his party, the witness said it was generally known that the PDP was popular in most part of his Local Government, where the results were cancelled and that the APC was only popular in three wards

Bukar Petrol, said he served as PDP’s collation agent in Dambowa Local Government of Borno State.

Petrola claimed that the APC took advantage of the series of bomb explosions carried out by boko haram a day before and on the morning of the election to manipulate the election results.

When asked how he knew all that happened in all the 10 wards and 100 polling units in his Local Government, the witness said the whole election was conducted in the LG Secretariat, because of the problem of boko haram.

Under cross-examination by Ali, Petrol said all the ward collation centres were also located within the LG headquarters, which made it easy for  him to move around all the voting points and know witness what was happening.

When questioned further, the witness said although devoted after being accredited with card reader, the electoral process was disrupted later when explosions occurred.

He said everyone ran away when bombs exploded, “and the 2nd and 3rd defendants took advantage of the situation, with the alleged collaboration of members of the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).

When asked how he was able to monitor what happened during the election, even when he claimed the explosions chased everyone away, the witness said he hid and watched from a distance.

Yau Yusuf said he was PDP’s collation agent in Dass Local Government of Bauchi State.

He said although he was fully accredited and voted, voters were intimidated and harassed.

On why he was able to vote if his claim of intimidation and harassment of voters were that pronounced, the witness said: “the intimidation did not stop me from voting, but it altered the result after the voting process.

“The original result was torn by agents of APC in the office of INEC right at the presence of INEC officials,” he added.

When asked where he kept the torn results, he said they should either be with INEC or the police, who collected the torn results and promised to investigate.

On whether the person, who tore the results has been prosecuted and  convicted, the witness said no, “because he is still moving around town.”

When asked why he excluded the information about torn result sheet from he written statement, Yusuf said he did not because the statement was a summary of what happened and that he was at the tribunal to elaborate.

The witness, who claimed to have visited most of the polling units in his local Government, said under cross examination, that “there are 116 polling units my his Local Government. I visited minimum of three in each of the 10 wards in the Local Government.”

When asked why he signed the result sheet if he was not happy with the results, the witness said he signed to obtain a copy of the result sheet for the purpose of the tribunal.

Jafar Abbas Ibrahim, who said he was a collation agent in Zaria Local Government of Kaduna State, also claimed the election process was manipulated against his party.

On whether the alleged vote switching, which he claimed took place in his presence, Ibrahim said he witness some and some were contained in the result sheets passed to him by the party agents at the polling unit and ward levels.

When asked whether the agents were still alive, the witness said they were at home and not before the tribunal.

On why he signed the result sheet, Ibrahim, who said he has been a lawyer since 1981 and was once the Chairman of the Local Government, said he signed just to indicated his presence, “not to authenticate the result.”

    Further hearing continues on Friday.

The president was particularly delighted by the Mega Primary schools constructed for children orphaned by Boko Haram in the state and expressed hope that the orphaned children will surely get quality education and brighter future with the educational facilities.

He however regretted that other girls are still being held captive by Boko Haram.

He assured that the Federal Government under his watch is doing everything possible to free the remaining girls in the hands of Boko Haram.

The president said: “I am pleased to be in Borno state on a state visit. I sincerely appreciate the good people of Borno state and as well commend your loyalty and support at all times.

“Since my arrival in Borno state, I have commissioned different projects. I am highly impressed by governor Kashim Shettima’s unique approach towards establishment of educational centers particularly at the primary level.

“As demonstrated by Governor Shettima, it is essential to give priority attention to primary school education in order to ensure formidable education at the tertiary level in line with international best practices.

“Borno state focusing on education is very imperative due to the peculiar security challenges posed by Boko Haram terrorists whose ideology is against girl child education. The terrorists in their crusades of malice against girl child education abducted Chibok Schoolgirls in Borno and Dapchi Schoolgirls in Yobe state.  And unfortunately, some of the girls are still in captive.

He also noted that all that have been achieved in the state including relative peace and growth could not have been achieved without the support of President Buhari.

Shettima also appreciated   the support and fatherly role played by the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Ibn El Kanemi in the restoration of peace in the state and region.

Shettima noted that Borno people are indeed highly indebted to Mr. President for his support and concern while appreciating the royal father for his royal blessing.

According to him, “lack of access to education and high rate of unemployment are the root causes of Boko haram Insurgency which informed our government commitment and investments to center on education and job creation (industrial hub) before others”.

The governor added that he was very passionate about education and welfare of the citizenry expressing hope that, “in the coming few years, the benefits of the educational, health, industrial and agricultural facilities provided will be yielded”, stressing that, “the incoming governor is a seasoned educationist, versed and competent to continue from where we stopped”.

  • There is hope for return of Leah Sharibu, remaining Chibok girls, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says his promise to ensure the release of Leah Sharibu and the remaining Chibok girls in captivity of Boko Haram remains valid and will be fulfilled.

The President renewed the pledge in a message by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, to mark the fifth anniversary of the abduction of the Chibok girls.

About 210 school girls of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State were kidnapped on April 14, 2014, with 107 of them later released following successful negotiations between the Buhari administration and the abductors.

Buhari had promised the parents of the kidnapped girls when he met them at the beginning of his first term as president, that he would ensure their daughters returned home.

The President acknowledged that it was this promise that made the people of Chibok vote for him overwhelmingly in the February presidential election.

He said that though his government had so far succeeded in securing the release of 107 of the girls, ”it will not rest until the remaining are reunited with their families”.

The President assured the parents of the girls that his administration is still on the matter.

”Diverse efforts are being intensified to secure the release of the Chibok Girls, along with all hostages in Boko Haram captivity, including Leah Sharibu, who was kidnapped from her school – Science Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State, on Feb. 19, 2018.

”On Leah Sharibu’s abduction, the interlocutors have reported encouraging progress so far.

”The report reaching us says her return to her family has unfortunately been hindered by the fear of the militants.

”They worry that heavy military presence in areas where they previously moved about freely could affect their safety after they return her to the government.

”At the same time, the military cannot jeopardise the security of the entire north-eastern region by halting their operations to accommodate Boko Haram’s fears,” he added.

According to him, Leah Sharibu will be reunited with her family as soon as any conclusions are reached on a number of options being considered for her safe transportation.

“The success of the Nigerian military in subduing Boko Haram is evidenced by the large numbers of militants who have surrendered recently, especially in neighbouring Cameroon and Niger.

“A similar mass surrender of militants is expected to happen soon in Nigeria.

“While Nigerian military operations are ongoing, the government is also engaging with the militants but the talks have been affected by the factionalisation of Boko Haram – with one group adopting a hard line posture and intensifying attacks on Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad, and another group engaging with the government for peaceful resolution,” he said.

Buhari used the opportunity of the commemoration of the Chibok tragedy to commend the girls, now women, saying they had triumphed over it all.

He also saluted the 106 girls sponsored by the Nigerian government to continue their studies at the American University of Nigeria, Yola.

He encouraged them to stay focused on becoming women, who could inspire other girls in Nigeria and around the world to triumph over “the daily battles they face in a world that often unfair to the girl-child”.

The President also extended his best wishes to the Chibok girls in other schools in Nigeria and around the world.

He congratulated Yaga Bitrus, who has excelled beyond expectations in her college in Maine, USA, and who is soon to receive a special ‘Against All Odds Award’ from her school.

  • Democracy a mirage with continuing attacks, abductions – EYN Church

Attacks and abductions by Boko Haram and herders are still constant and the government has a lot to do in curbing them if it means business about protecting the citizens and democratic governance, a church group has said.

The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, otherwise named Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’uwa A Nijeriya (EYN), which took the position during a conference of its leaders at the church’s headquarters in Kwarhi, in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, said Nigeria had failed woefully in the restoration of peace to troubled communities.

The President of the EYN, Rev Joel Billi, who delivered a speech at the 72nd General Church Council (GCC) Conference currently holding in Kwsrhi, said, “Boko Haram attack is almost on a daily basis. Thilamakalama (in Chibok LGA, Borno State) suffered several attacks before they were finally displaced from the village. Ngurthlavu (in Danboa LGA also Borno State) was attacked on March 13, 2019 where many houses were burnt and the terrorists left with two girls.”

He said people in government who had failed to secure the country were going about heavily guarded on public account while the rest of the people were left almost completely at the mercy of incessant attackers.

“Nigeria is drifting day by day towards state of anarchy while we are busy blowing big grammar that we are practicing democracy. Honestly, we are far away from real democracy,” the EYN president asserted.

The EYN General Church Council Conference, which started on Tuesday March 2 and will run up to Friday March 5 under the theme, ‘Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith,’ attracts about 1,500 pastors and other church leaders from about 700 congregations of the EYN in Nigeria and abroad.
