Babalola urged the Federal Government to include students of private institutions to benefit from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) programme.

He lamented over the discrimination against research outputs of Nigerian scholars, hence urging Western research suggestions and recommendations to be embraced in the process of policy formulation in the country.

Also, he pleaded with the Osun State Government over the taxation of the institution’s radio station, saying: “The mast meant for radio programmes for educational purposes is being taxed, when you are looking for money you don’t look for it anyhow – this is a very serious appeal. The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Jonathan Babalola said: “56 students were inducted today and I’m very confident of their abilities. They were made to pass through all they needed to pass through.

“The government has to do more especially for private universities. The policy of government shying away from assisting private institutions is not good. The students in the private institutions are also Nigerians and they are being trained to help the country.

“So, if we are producing people who will help the world and conducting research that will impact the society, then the government should also have an input in whatever we do.”

  • ANDP Presidential candidate pledges ideological revolution

The Presidential candidate of the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), Prof. Yusuf Ameh Obaje on Tuesday said the country needed ideological revolution to turn its fortunes around.

He said such ideological revolution should affect the economic, social and political prosperity of Nigeria.

Prof Obaje, who was a pioneer Chancellor of Bowen University, made this known on Tuesday during a press briefing in Abuja.

He said: “We must engage in non-violent national ideological revolution. We must work to restore our consciousness of the sacredness of life.

“We have wasted too much time in over-exaggerating and unduly promoting our differences, instead of appreciating and celebrating our unity in diversity and our diversity in unity, while rebuilding a Nation of fulfilled citizens and of true greatness for all Nigerians.

“This is what we should have done and continue to do regardless of our natural, legitimate, and minor differences of ethnic or tribal identity, religious persuasions, political commitment, gender classification and cultural expression.

“We have lost it.  We are killing human beings like we are killing rats, as a matter of fact, lizards and rats have become more valuable than human life in our society; a society that claims to have millions of Christians and Muslims.”

Concerning vices such as corruption and terrorism affecting the country, Obaje explained that unless “we deal with the fundamental and foundational crisis of national ideology, we cannot move forward as a people.”

He added: “We are still a country of underdeveloped resources, abandoned projects and shattered hopes of a people perpetually struggling to become united, prosperous, secured and experiencing uncommon peaceful co-existence with one another.

“Unfortunately, we have individually and collectively succeeded in creating a culture of widespread godless behaviour, deep-seated non-existential religiosity, largely unproductive leadership, chronically uncommitted followership and pitiably schizophrenic lifestyle.”

Prof. Obaje added that he has adopted a non-violent revolution not only in creating a national ideology, but in bringing about a political, economic, agricultural, infrastructural and national policy revolution.

The National Chairman of the party, Barr. Charles Ogboli, said Nigerians were waiting for an alternative President that will solve the country’s problems.

He said: “Here comes the alternative you have been looking for. We have a God-fearing and transparent candidate; one that God himself has provided us with.

“We do not have the intention to form a coalition or merger with any political party. We are going to face the political race to win. We are recreating Nigeria.

“Concerning the issue of vote buying, Nigerians need to take a position on what truly belongs to them. Vote buying is not only self-enslaving, but an enslavement of Nigerians. It is true that money answereth all things; however, it is not the solution to all things.”

81 students bag first class at Bowen University – VC

The Bowen University, Iwo, Osun, on Saturday awarded first class degrees to 81 graduating students at its 12th convocation.

The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mattews Ojo, stated this while delivering his convocation speech at the university’s premises in Iwo.

Ojo said 96 graduating students were awarded with second class upper degrees, 382 with second class lower degrees, while 136 were awarded with third class degrees.

He added that 15 were awarded with MBBS Degrees and 29 awarded with Master Degrees.

Ojo urged the graduating students to be focused and to be good ambassadors of the university wherever they found themselves.

‘‘Equally important, do not dwell anymore on the grades attained in the courses in the university but focus your attention on the knowledge gained, skills acquired and character that has been moulded.

‘‘No doubt, Bowen University has prepared you for leadership. Indeed, our nations, at this time, needs people like you that will make a positive difference,’’ Ojo said.

Earlier, the Chancellor of the university, Dr Olumide Kehinde, urged the new graduates to create new opportunities for themselves through self-employment.

Also, the Pro-Chancello of the university, Mr Oluwole Abegunde, urged the new graduates to be focused and be agents of positive change in the society.

In his remarks, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, represented by his deputy, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori, urged private universities to engage in research and development, saying these were critical intellectual needs for society’s growth.

In his exhortation, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Baptist Convention, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, urged the new graduates to empower themselves to make them relevant in the country.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Mrs Joan Ayo, said that the Federal Character Principle, if properly implemented, would ensure effective service delivery in the country.

Ayo said this while delivering the 12th Convocation Lecture of the university with the theme: “Governance, Service Delivery and Development in Nigeria since Independence.’’

“It is my firm conviction that if properly implemented, the principle will ensure authentic development in Nigeria.

“It will douse the numerous agitations that, unfortunately, we are accustomed to. It will remove the cliché of marginalisation, reduce the tension in the country and promote peace,” she said.

Ayo, however, debunked insinuations that the Federal Character Principle sacrifices meritocracy for mediocrity in order to accommodate everybody in the country.

‘‘In practice, Federal Character Principle ensures picking out the best from each Local Government or Senatorial District or Zone, as applicable,” she said.
