  • Brace up, Mr. President, in order not to be rubbished

This piece of advice is necessary because the spate of mindless killings in the land now seems to me a deliberate, planned and sustained action to obliterate the gains of the Buhari administration in the last three years and rubbish the man of the moment and get him consigned into the garbage can of infamy.

Will Buhari allow that? Isn’t he allowing that? Only Buhari can supply the answer. But as a firm believer in his integrity and honour, I suggest to him strongly that he shouldn’t allow that.

Perhaps, he’s set to change the growing perception in the minds of many that he had become weakened and had therefore surrendered his authority to the enemies of this country who are wreaking untoward havoc by the second, not anymore by the day.

The hint dropped by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, the other day he and the ubiquitous other President, (sorry I take that back), the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, were on a working visit to the Villa, that the nation’s security architecture was to be re-jigged, gives a ray of hope that our President is now fully conscious that the buck stops on his table, and no one else.

I once believed that herdsmen, once known to carry ordinary sticks, otherwise known as ‘sa-n-da’, but have now graduated to carrying sophisticated weapons like AK-47, were the killers on the prowl in the land but I’m beginning to have a re-think, given the latest clinical mowing down of some 100 people or thereabout in Plateau State.

Miyyeti Allah group was said to have claimed responsibility for the cold -blooded murder of innocent citizens. Perhaps so; in which case, those who go by that name should by now be cooling their heels in police custody, ready to answer charges of pre-meditated murder. Perhaps not, because that claim could be a deliberate plan to divert people’s minds and thoughts away from the direction from where this deadly action is actually coming from.

It is not going to be enough to re-draw the security architecture of the country by taking a look at the lopsidedness in the composition of the key commanders of the various security and intelligence formations, but it behoves this government to allay increasing fears that subtle but sustained efforts are afoot to Islamise this country.

I don’t believe in the postulation, but granted that it is on anybody’s cards, let it be said here unequivocally that the thought be perished, as  it is a dream that cannot and will not come through, except some people don’t believe in the continued existence of a country called Nigeria. And, I want to trust in the patriotic and nationalistic blood running in President Buhari’s veins that he loves Nigeria to allow her Islamisation and inexorably her destruction.

Most of us love the mutual and cordial cohabitation of all the major religious faiths we profess in this country and have cemented this love over time with inter-tribal and inter-religious marriages; that should not be permitted to be suicidally sacrificed on the altar of religious experimentation and rabid fundamentalism.

The prayer of most Nigerians is that Buhari, having begun a good work of governance and restoration of vital values needed for meaningful socio-economic development, should successfully run out his term or terms in office. He should therefore not permit anyone or anything that will put spanners in his works, as the fallout from that will be too catastrophic to imagine.

Brace up for real development, Akeredolu urges academics

Ondo State governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN),  yesterday charged the nation’s tertiary institutions to brace up to the challenges of real development. He said there appeared to be increasing disconnect between the curricula adopted for the training of the citizenry and the current realities. Akeredolu, who spoke during the 15th convocation ceremonies of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, noted that the country was confronted  with  the  inexplicable  situation, leading to millions of the nation’s youths being unemployed.

The Governor said “the tragic reality borders on the level and quality of training received by these wonderful creatures who excel so easily whenever they find themselves in an environment which encourages education.” He maintained that while it is important for government at all levels to concentrate on the education of the citizenry, there is also the need for the academics to descend from the ivory tower to interact with the society with a view to come to terms with realities.

According to him, “The character of the curricula of education must be such that addresses basic challenges of existence in any given environment. Acquisition of knowledge must be seen as integral part of the quest for the development of a society. The process is too important to be reduced to a carnival-like fiesta, which is mere evidence of participation in the certification rites, culminating in the award of degrees and diplomas of varying degrees. An educated person should be able to solve specific problems.”

Akeredolu, who was conferred with a honourary Degree of Doctor of Law by the management of Igbinedion University, said it was high time the nation stopped undue romanticisation of the role of government in funding education.

He said: “It is correct to hold that any society owes its citizens a bounding duty in ensuring that their welfare shall be the sole reason for governance. If we all agree that there can be no substitute for good education if a society is truly desirous of joining the rest of the civilized world, then it is patently unrealistic to expect a benevolent phantom called government to provide everything, while procreation remains the only active index of participation of a large percentage of the populace.”

ITTF World Tour: Quadri, Onaolapo brace up for Swedish Open

After a disappointing start to his campaign in the French League, Aruna Quadri and his compatriot, Ojo Onaolapo are at present bracing up for this month’s International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour tagged Swedish Open.

From the three league matches played by his French team, Jura Morez this season, Quadri was on the losing side but the 2014 ITTF Star Player managed to win one of his matches. However, his team was on the team losing side in their third league game against Pontoise-Cergy.

The Oyo State-born Quadri has put this behind him while hoping for a better outing in the forthcoming Swedish Open holding in Stockholm.

Despite dropping to 50 from 45 in the latest ITTF ranking, Quadri has been seeded 22 in the men’s singles event of the Swedish Open and he will partner Onaolapo in the men’s doubles for the tournament.

At present, Quadri has helped his Portuguese club, Sporting Lisbon to top the league table in the Portuguese league having won all their four matches this season, while the return of the Portuguese Super Cup to Lisbon has been firing the team to aim for the title this season.

A confident Quadri believes taking part in the Swedish Open would help him to improve his rating for the December  ranking while hoping to remain at the top 50 in the world.

The next league match for Quadri’s French team is at home against Garde Du Voeu Hennebon on November 17.

Onaolapo’s last major tournament was at the last African Games in Brazzaville where he was edged out in the quarterfinal by Egypt’s Khalid Assar for him to miss out from the Olympics slots.

Onaolapo will commence his campaign at the Swedish Open on Wednesday from the preliminary round where he will slug it out for a place in the main draw, while Quadri will kick-start his title chase from the main draw having been seeded among the 32 top players in the world.

  • Nigerians should brace up for challenges ahead, APC chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and Baba Adinni of Ikeja Division, Chief Ayo Akande, has advised Nigerians to brace up for the challenges ahead in the country.

Akande gave this advice on Sunday at the turbanning ceremony of Sheikh Sulaeman Bayonle Husain as the new Chief Imam of Aguda Oke-Ira Muslim Community Central Mosque.

The party chieftain, who solicited for the cooperation of the Muslim community in praying for the success of the new administration, warned that Nigerians should not expect overnight miracles from  the Muhammadu Buhari administration, adding that “the next one year will be tough and sweet”.

“For those who are willing to adjust to positive changes in our nation, it will be sweet for them, but for those who cannot adapt to changes and still want to bask in the euphoria of the past, it will be tough”.

The APC ,he said, won the last presidential election in the country based on moral grounds hinged on President Buhari, hence he is the hope of Nigerians.

“In the light of this, Nigerians should co-operate with the president to make their hope a huge success”.

Akande, who is also the Baba Adinni of Oke-Ira Aguda Muslim Community Central Mosque, implored Muslim clerics to participate in politics to fight bad leadership and the oppression of the poor.

He said the philosophy upon which every religion is based “is humanity, hence clerics should join politics to practise the goodness in religion in order to improve humanity”.

He enjoined Muslim clerics to take a cue from the Vice President , Professor Yemi Osinbajo, a lawyer and pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

  • Home loss: Brace up, Lawal charges players, coaches

Home loss: Brace up, Lawal charges players, coaches

Kaduna United General Manager, Garuba Lawal has said he would demand explanation from the Crocodile Boys’ technical crew and the players for their lukewarm attitude during their home league encounter with Sharks which the hosts lost 1-2 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.

Kaduna United were almost dead and buried by the end of the first half after they went into halftime with two goals down in a home match against the Blue Angels.

Speaking with SportingLife from Kaduna, the former Super Eagles’ midfielder said he would want Kaduna United’s players to explain why they do not deserve to be sanctioned for putting up such ridiculous outing against Sharks as if there was nothing at stake.

He queried the rationale behind the wayward back pass by Kaduna United’s defender, Peter Ambrose to Sharks’ striker, Pyagbara which led to the opening goal and the former international is also demanding answers from the rest of the players for their low productivity during the match against the Blue Angels last Wednesday.

Lawal hinted that the meeting would be conveyed before the team’s trip to Gombe United where he stressed the team must go with the ambition of securing an away win to make up for the home loss.

The Super Eagles one time engine room said he reckoned that in football, games must be won and lost but that he was at a loss on why the players soft pedalled against Sharks.

“I am not happy with our display against Sharks at all. I am not saying that a club must always win at home but the whole team played a very disappointing game against Sharks and they must explain why they played in such a manner before our next league fixture to stop as a deterrent.

“The game was nothing to write home about and the players played as if nothing was at stake. The situation that led to the first goal we conceded was very funny. Our defender(Peter Ambrose) under no challenge and pressure decided to give a back pass to Sharks’ striker (Pyagbara) and this led to the first goal. I am calling the technical crew and the players to a meeting to explain why they couldn’t lift their game against Sharks.

“Peter Ambrose must also come out to explain why he played so badly and also gave away that cheap goal. This kind of performance cannot be tolerated if we want the club to achieve tangible results this season.”

Lawal, however, says he believes that the loss to Sharks won’t disturb the club’s preparations for their next match against Gombe United where they are expected to recoup their lost points.

Kaduna United are 18th on the log with seven points from eight games.
