  • Akeredolu’s wife offers maternity kits to indigent pregnant women

    Wife of the Ondo state governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu has identified gender inequality as bane of development in the country.

    She noted that though gender equality is a great catalyst for sustainable development, women continue to live as second class citizens in a male-dominated Nigeria.

    Mrs Akeredolu who spoke in Akure, the state capital during the 2019 International Women’s Day lecture noted that the inequality lapses was the reason why the country has not made substantial progress in national development.

    At the event, maternity kits running into several thousands of Naira were distributed to expectant mothers from across the state.

    The founder, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) said gender parity gap was even worse in developing countries where cultural norms and traditions spelt out well constructed gender-biased system.

    However, she noted that to change the narrative, effort should be made towards empowering women.

    According to her” in the wake of the gender-parity realities in the state, the Forum of Wives of Ondo State Officials and Female Political Appointees (FOWOSO) has been working tirelessly to improve the socioeconomic status of women in the state.

    She disclosed that thousands of women across the 18 local government areas in the state have been empowered with skills acquisition, empowerment items, and health information.

    Mrs Akeredolu said even though FOWOSO has been the major group galvanizing actions for the elevation of status of women in the state, she however maintained that the quest for gender equality was not the responsibility of women alone.

    She said” We must all take our stand against traditions and norms that discriminate against women.

    The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on Women Affairs, Mrs Titi Adeyemi called for equal opportunities for women to participate in decision-making.

    Mrs Adeyemi noted that the 2018 International Women Day was unique in the state because of new innovations of Public Lecture and distribution of Maternity Kits to Indigent expectant mothers across the 18 local government areas.

    The Lecture entitled” Inspiring Women for greater inclusion was delivered by Prof (Mrs) Helen Ogunsuyi of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

  • ‘How we saved breast cancer victims’

    Ten women out of 40 breast cancer ‘patients on queue’ in Ondo State have been rescued through the crowd-funding scheme of the founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu.

    Mrs Akeredolu, a survivor of the deadly disease and wife of the Ondo State Governor founded the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in 1997 to fight the scourge through advocacy.

    At a news conference  in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the BRECAN chairperson in the state, Dr Toying Arimoro extolled Mrs Akeredolu  for her humanitarian service to the society.

    Some of the survivors, Mrs Oye Temitope, Mrs Grace Dolapo  Meroyi, Mrs Grace Lasisi and others were at the occasion where they narrated their ordeal, and how Mrs Akeredolu saved them from untimely deaths.

    Dr Ayimoro recalled that the association was inaugurated in May, 2017, while they combed all nook and cranny of the 18 local government areas to preach that “cancer is not a certificate to death’’.

    She said: “We sensitised market women and even visited religious organisations for assistance, women are more vulnerable, and they do not have resources to fight the disease.

    She noted that since there was no resources to tackle the disease, the BRECAN founder initiated crowd-funding minimum of N200 per head through which 10 women were treated and become survivors.

    “Treatnent for cancer is too expensive; no single family can tackle it except through collaborative effort to save women’s lives.

    Breast Cancer Consultant at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo, Dr Katung Abba said a cancer patient would need about N1.3 million for treatment, adding that names of affected women are being compiled across the state to know the statistics.

    One of the beneficiaries and survivors, Mrs Oye Temitope, 41, appreciated Mrs Akeredolu for her kindness, stressing that she got N136,000 through BRECAN for operation.

    She urged well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with the association to save more lives, even as she called on women who are affected by the disease to present themselves for treatment to avoid untimely death.

    100 days in office: Akeredolu gets passmark

    The Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, gave Gov. Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, a pass mark for for performing beyond expectation within 100 days in office.

    Mrs Morenike Alaka, the Caretaker Chairperson of the council area, made this commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Okitipupa.

    Alaka said that Akeredolu had brought real governance to the masses in the state, especially those at the grassroots.

    Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who emerged winner in the Nov. 26, 2016 governorship election, was inaugurated as the sixth executive governor of the state on Feb. 24.

    She said that the governor swung into action by paying the salaries of civil servants, who were being owed several months of salaries by the previous administration.

    According to her, the state is now wearing a new look, as Akeredolu has completed most of the state road projects abandoned by the past administration.

    “The Akeredolu administration has brought a fresh breath and succour to the masses of this state in 100 days.

    “Commercial activities have become active, as civil servants now receive their salaries as at when due and some of the arrears owed by the past administration have been paid.

    “Put politics aside, sincerely, this government has performed well in just 100 days in office,” she said.

    The chairperson also lauded the wife of the governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu for inaugurating the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to detect and treat breast cancer in women.

    She also hailed her initiative in skill acquisition programme, which she said, would go a long way to better the lives of the women.

    Alaka urged the residents of the state to continue to cooperate with the present administration and pray for its success.
