  • Oshiomhole, Saraki clash over bribery allegation

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and Senate President Bukola Saraki are locked in a big row over bribery allegations arising from the APC primaries.

Saraki, a former member of the APC, has defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He said: “Nigerians are waiting to see how the President will handle the serious allegations against his party chairman. We expect the President with his anti-corruption campaign to institute thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations against his party chairman.

”The failure of the President to get to the root of the matter will finally destroy his ability and that of the party to continue to talk of any anti-graft battle. The President should let the investigation be thorough, open and transparent. This is no time for any cover-up,” Saraki said in a statement by Yusuph Olaniyonu.

A Presidency source said yesterday that no compliant had been received against Oshiomhole.

The party chairman, who has been battling some governors seeking tickets for their favourites, challenged the Senate president to give proof of his corruption allegations or face a law suit.

A statement by Oshiomhole’s Media Adviser Simon Egbebulem said: “Whereas, the basis on which he made those comments was tenuous and unjustifiable, it is on record that Saraki has been in the eye of investigations by the EFCC and the ICPC for sundry cases of corruption. That is the same man that has taken it upon himself to question Comrade Oshiomhole’s credibility.

“We challenge him to mention one person who has claimed that he gave money to Oshiomhole to influence him and the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in the just-concluded primary elections.

“We insist that Saraki with his kind of prebendal politics is nothing but a monumental disgrace to the nation’s democracy.”

Saraki kicked off the outbursts when he told reporters in Ilorin after the prayers to mark the sixth anniversary of his father’s death that Oshiomhole should quit politics because he lacked the moral right to continue to lead the APC following the allegations levelled against him.

He said: “Oshiomole is somebody, who we are told  been collecting not even naira but dollars from candidates and he is being accused by his party’s aspirants and governors. I don’t think he has any moral ground, even to continue to be in politics not to talk about being a chairman of a party.

”I remember in those days, even Oyegun, they never accused him of something like this. I have left that party. I’m sure the President, based on integrity, knows the right thing to do. So, on moral ground, he cannot speak on moral ground.”

Saying Saraki should name any member of the APC who offered him bribe either in foreign or local currency to influence him and members of the National Working Committee to take a decision in his favour before, during and after the party primaries or face legal action, Oshiomhole described as pathetic and irresponsible the resort to what he called petty politics by the Senate President who he described as a usurper of and pretender to the position he occupies.

He said Saraki, who has been in the eyes of  investigation by the EFCC AND ICPC, has no moral ground to call for his resignation.

The statement added: “It is sad that Saraki, who just woke up from slumber occasioned by his crushing defeat at the Port Harcourt presidential primary election of his party, could degenerate to such a low level.

“It is equally sad, but not unexpected, that Saraki, who is politically drowning, would make such  libelous comments against the national chairman of the APC. And I challenge Saraki to mention one name of an aspirant that gave money to the National Chairman or we file a legal action against him.”

Alluding to a rash of libellous reports by disgruntled persons aimed at maligning Oshiomhole’s hard-earned reputation.

“The primary elections of the APC, which were at the root of these malicious attacks, have come and gone, but it is understandable that those who lost out in the transparent exercise conducted by the party under the leadership of Comrade Oshiomhole have been exercising their rights to protest.

“It is curious to note that some elements in the top hierarchy of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) appeared to be too eager to see the exit of the APC Chairman from office and may be working in tandem with certain APC members. While it makes sense for PDP to wish for cure for their headache that Comrade Oshiomole has become, it should not be taken for granted that anyone can get away with any action that is capable of tarnishing the unassailable integrity of the APC Chairman.

“We are aware that part of the strategies discussed in Dubai, where the PDP leaders recently visited and held their meeting, was to continue to dish out lies against top APC leaders with a view to distract the leadership of the APC ahead the 2019 general election. But they have failed because the National Chairman and APC leaders are focused and will never be distracted.

“However, It is time these irresponsible lies stopped; otherwise, anybody who continues to make unsubstantiated allegations against the person and character of the National Chairman should be ready to provide proofs in a court of law. It cannot be just a political game to smear the character of Comrade Oshiomole by people whose track record is unenviable.

“We want the public to note that if the exercise of the APC primaries were to be about money-taking or money-making, the state governors, some of whom are embittered about the outcomes in their states, were in a better position to dish out mega bucks. But the National Working Committee of APC under the leadership of Comrade Oshiomole was motivated by higher ideals and the pursuit of noble democratic principles.

“It is sad that instead of commending the National Chairman for resisting criminal overtures to compromise him, he is being relentlessly harangued, abused and accused of receiving phantom bribes.  This is a callous and wicked enterprise. The National Chairman’s credibility is unassailable. His reputation as president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is a matter of fact.

“Significantly, as NLC president, he fought the PDP-controlled Federal Government in furtherance of pro-people policies without collecting money to compromise the struggles. He rode on the crest of his credibility and reputation to step in the saddle in Edo State as governor for eight years where he turned around the fortune of the State.

”Indeed, owing to his performance in Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was able to get the people’s support to ensure victory for APC governor as his successor.

“The National Chairman views the current attempts to tarnish his image as uncalled for and has vowed that he will seek legal redress against anybody or media, whether the traditional or in the social media, who makes such unsubstantiated allegations henceforth.

“Enough is enough. We urge our respected media outfits to exercise caution not to be used by unscrupulous elements. Except such persons or media house can provide evidence.”

  • Bailiff collapses in court over bribery allegation

A bailiff with the Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Mkpat Enin Judicial Division, Mr. Uko Ekpo-Nyo, collapsed yesterday in court at the hearing on a bribery allegation levelled against him.

Ekpo-Nyo was accused of collecting bribe from suspected kidnappers to subvert justice against their victim, the Director General of the Centre for International Integrity, Peace and Development in Nigeria, Dr. Ime Stephen.

There was mild drama during the court session as the presiding judge, Justice Felicita Ibanga, struggled to exonerate herself of the allegation.

According to the judge, Ekpo-Nyo acted on his own, adding that she never asked nor requested bribe from the families of the suspects, Stephen Asuquo and Dennis Harry.

It was gathered that the bailiff passed out when the judge openly disowned him and his alleged action.

Stephen was reportedly kidnapped following the case of his 15-year-old niece, Mary Udo, who was allegedly raped at gunpoint by a police inspector, Joseph Etuk, on her way from a church service.

Udo was said to have been detained for some days by the inspector, who allegedly collected N10,000 for bail from Stephen.

Etuk was said to have been dismissed from the police after an orderly room trial by former Police Commissioner Murtala Mani.

It was learnt that few days after the incident, 16 suspected  cultists  invaded his house at Nyaodiong Village in Mkpat Enin at 10:30 p.m, brandishing weapons and shooting into the air three times.

The hoodlums were said to have forced the doors open to gained entry into his room.

Also, on August 16, 2016, Stephen was kidnapped around 3 a.m by three masked gunmen who reportedly broke the backyard to enter his home.

Stephen urged the public and President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the Ministry of Justice to probe the alleged bribery scandal.

  • Probe $20m bribery allegation against firm, says rights group

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption, (CSNAC) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to speed up efforts its probe of the $20m bribery scam linked to some officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)

CSNAC Chairman Olanrewaju Suraju who made the call in Abuja, said anything contrary will be an embarrassment to the anti-corruption stance of the administration.

He said: “For an administration that prides itself on fighting corruption, leaving a case like this h to drag on forever goes against everything this administration has been preaching. The EFCC must ensure that investigations reach a logical end and those found guilty are made to face the full wrath of the law.”

He added:  ”The bribery scam involved Dredging International Services, a Swiss company in Cyprus, but while the company has been found guilty in Switzerland and fined one million Swiss Francs since 2012, the EFCC investigation is still pending and the culprits continue to walk free.”

The management of NPA has confirmed writing the Office of Attorney General for legal advice on the legitimacy of continued interaction with Dredging International services in the new dredging contract announced by the NPA.

The CSNAC queries, the rationale for the legal advice since it is confirmed that Switzerland has completed its own investigation and prosecuted the culprits since 2012.

The group recalled that Nigeria sanctioned Halliburton and Siemens in the past after they were indicted in bribery cases and prevented from participating in contract implementation. “It is curious how NPA is framing excuses for purported involvement of the indicted company in the bidding process for the new dredging contract. The action is capable of sending the wrong signal of endorsing bribery to the international community.

The CSNAC chief called for immediate disqualification of Dredging International services from bidding for any contract in Nigeria.

  • Bribery allegation rocks Reps panel’s probe of centenary project

Bribery allegation rocks Reps panel’s probe of centenary project

An on-going probe of the  controversial Centenary City Project by the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory ended in a fiasco yesterday.

The Chairman of the committee, Herman Hembe and the immediate past  Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim were locked in a war of words after Anyim objected to  Hembe presiding over the hearing.

Anyim later walked out on the panel.

The immediate past Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),Alhaji Bala Mohammed  had his own brush with Hembe whose conducted be branded as childish and unrepresentative.

The multi-billion dollar Centenary City Project was initiated by the Goodluck Jonathan Administration to mark the 100 years of the amalgamation of Nigeria’s Northern and Southern protectorates by the United Kingdom.

    It was cited in Abuja.

The Reps Committee is probing alleged irregularities in the project implementation.

Anyim accused Hembe of harassing  him because he (Anyim)  refused to sack the former Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission, Ms Arunma Oteh as allegedly requested by Hembe after she accused Hembe of demanding  bribe from her.

“When the former Managing Director of Security and Exchange Commission accused you of demanding bribe from her, you pushed for her sack and I refused to sack her as Secretary to Government of the Federation. I will not allow you to use the platform of this committee to victimize me,” Anyim charged as tension began to rise at the session yesterday.

    Hember would not have that.

He shot back at Anyim, who had once served as Senate President saying:”Point of order, point of order, point of order. No, no, no, no, no.

“Hold on. The former Senate President cannot assume the chairmanship  of the committee. It’s not fair. Please sir, I have the privilege to be heard…”

Anyim: “Okay, let us not get overheated. Mr. Chairman, distinguished Hon. members, let me just say briefly…”

Hembe: “Hold on, I am going to allow you  to finish but hold on. Let me just say that we are a House of free laws, we are a House of order. We are a House of due process. This is not an avenue…. Let me just say to the former President of the Senate and the former SGF that in my opening remarks, I tried to show you courtesy…Please, don’t interrupt, as far as this hearing is concerned, I’m chairman here. I am chairman and I would not allow you to usurp that position!”

But the former Senate President was unrelenting.

He said: “M.r Chairman, you have been threatening to conduct this public hearing for over a year now. In fact, you ended last year with it and this year, you started again with it. You scheduled it for 27th of January and you later moved it to 1st of February  and again moved it to 3rd of February.”

“Mr Chairman, we only discovered your game plan for all the postponements when you started sending messages to the  Managing Director to come and see you privately. It was after all your efforts to get the Managing Director to come and see you privately failed that you confirmed this date. I want you to know that nobody will see you privately, rather we are ready for the hearing.”

Anyim said Hembe  should disqualify himself from sitting on the committee. “Mr. Chairman, you can handover to the Vice Chairman and excuse us so that hearing can proceed.”

But Hembe insisted on chairing the hearing.

What followed was Anyim walking  out of the venue leaving his aides behind.

Anyim had earlier told the committee that the manner of his invitation as a former Chairman of the National Assembly was disrespectful and wondered why Hembe insisted on the probe when the Senate had concluded same.

The former Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, who initially declined to speak on the issue, faulted Hembe’s approach.

He said:”You’re putting the cart before the horse, we have procedures here. The minister of the FCT ( Mohammed Bello)  is here, yet you’re behaving childishly.”

Efforts by members of the to make Mohammed withdraw his words fell on deaf ears.

“I will not take it back. You can take me to court,” he retorted.

Hembe chided Mohammed saying: “We expect that as an elder, as a Senator and a former Minister, your conduct should be above board.”

A member of the committee, Linus Okorie ( Ebonyi State) was incensed as Hembe would not allow him conclude his questions to the stakeholders present.

Hembe said that the Centenary Project comprising 1, 267 hectares was owned by two companies – Basic Start Limited and Company First Limited – with 10000 share capital each to two persons: Boma Ozobia and Paul Oki.

He questioned how two persons were allocated such a huge expanse of land.

The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) he said, must provide the committee with answers at the next sitting which scheduled for Tuesday
