EPL: Bottom side Wolves fight back to draw at Brighton

Wolves staged a dramatic late fightback from 2-0 down to rescue a point and lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League in a thrilling game at Brighton.

The home side looked to be coasting to three points and a place in the top four after goals by in-form Danny Welbeck and substitute Evan Ferguson put them firmly in control.

That left Gary O’Neil’s Wolves staring at a sixth successive league defeat.

But Rayan Ait-Nouri reduced the deficit in the 88th minute before Matheus Cunha capped an impressive performance with a deflected shot which went in off the underside of the bar in the 93rd minute.

The point was enough to lift Wolves off the bottom of the table after a horrible run of results left O’Neil under serious pressure.

EPL: Brighton beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park

Danny Welbeck’s first-half goal proved decisive as Brighton condemned Newcastle to their first Premier League defeat at home since January.

The result lifts the Seagulls up to fifth in the table with the Magpies remaining in eighth.

Brighton had spent most of the opening period defending when Welbeck’s quick thinking made the difference.

The former England forward, who turns 34 next month, played a clever one-two with Georginio Rutter before placing the ball in the bottom right corner with the visitors’ first effort on goal of the afternoon.

Welbeck, who was withdrawn on a stretcher late on after appearing to injure his back, has now scored five goals in eight appearances in the top flight this term.

However, Brighton’s victory was also down to some resilient defending and profligate finishing from the hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side carved out several promising openings with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon both going close but they were unable to find a way past visiting goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

EPL: Ipswich draw Brighton 0-0 at Amex Stadium

Unbeaten Brighton were left frustrated after being held to a goalless Premier League draw by Ipswich at the Amex Stadium.

The home side dominated possession but clear cut chances were at a premium and it was the visitors who came closest to finding a winner on the south coast.

Liam Delap broke forward early in the second half and, with no team-mates up in support, just kept running and burst into the box, but his fierce shot across goal came back off the post.

It would have been a goal completely against the run of play with Fabian Hurzeler’s side enjoying much the better of the play in the first half and the start of the second.

The closest they came to a goal, though, was 10 minutes before the break when Georginio Rutter ran onto Yankuba Minteh’s cute pass and worked space in the box but saw his shot parried by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

It fell to Kaoru Mitoma six yards out and the winger looked certain to score but Muric sprung up to repel the rebound as well.

The Seagulls continued to press for the decisive goal, with Evan Ferguson curling narrowly wide late on, but it would not come.

Brighton stay unbeaten with two wins and two draws from their first four games, while Ipswich are still searching for their first win back in the Premier League.

EPL: Hurzeler starts Brighton career with win at Everton

Brighton’s young manager Fabian Hurzeler started his Premier League career with an impressive win that meant Everton began their final season at Goodison Park in miserable fashion.

The venue has been Everton’s home ground since 1892, but they will move to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the start of next season.

Hurzeler, the Premier League’s youngest ever permanent manager, and his Brighton side were in no mood to provide any sentiment towards the opposition.

Tackles flew in during a thunderous first half in which Everton’s Jack Harrison had an early goal ruled out for offside, while at the other end Joao Pedro rattled the post with a stinging low drive.

The visitors took the lead courtesy of Kaoru Mitoma’s easy finish at the back post following fine work from debutant Yankuba Minteh, who was heavily linked with a move to Everton before joining Brighton this summer.

Everton had a penalty award overturned at the start of the second half despite Lewis Dunk appearing to catch Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as referee Simon Hooper reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Feeling hard done by, Everton were then punished further as Idrissa Gueye misplaced a pass in midfield, allowing the Seagulls to counter, and Danny Welbeck stroked in a lovely finish from the edge of the box.

Everton’s Ashley Young was sent off as the last man for pulling back Japan international Mitoma, and Simon Adingra slid home a third goal late on to inflict a thoroughly desperate opening defeat on the home side.

Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi announces departure

Head coach Roberto de Zerbi will leave Brighton after their final Premier League match of the season at home to Manchester United on Sunday.

Chairman Tony Bloom said the Premier League club and De Zerbi “have mutually agreed” that the Italian will depart.

Former Shakhtar Donetsk coach De Zerbi, 44, joined the Seagulls in September 2022 on a four-year contract.

Brighton finished sixth last season, with the club’s highest ever top-flight finish securing European qualification for the first time in their history.

“Roberto has given us two excellent seasons of service in which he has led the club to new heights, not least our first ever European campaign which will live long in the memory of Albion fans,” said Bloom.

“We have mutually agreed to end Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future.”

BBC Sport understands that one manager on Brighton’s list to replace De Zerbi is likely to be Kieran McKenna, who has just won promotion to the Premier League with Ipswich.

Brighton enjoyed Europa League wins over Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens this season to top their group before being knocked out in the last 16 by Roma.

They are 10th in the Premier League before their final game on Sunday and can finish no higher in the table.

“I am sure our fans will give Roberto and his staff a wonderful and fully deserved send off at the Amex before, during and after tomorrow’s match,” Bloom added.

“In the meantime, I’d like to thank Roberto and his staff for all their hard work in the past two seasons. They all leave our club on good terms and with our very best wishes for the future.”

De Zerbi was appointed after Graham Potter left for Chelsea and Brighton have since sold the likes of Leandro Trossard, Alexis Mac Allister, Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo for a combined total of more than £200m.

“We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that suits each of us best, following our own ideas and visions, as well as our work and human values,” said De Zerbi.

“Leaving now provides me with time to take a break before deciding on my future plans.

“I am very sad to be leaving Brighton, but I am very proud of what my players and staff have achieved with the support of everyone at the club and our amazing fans in the past two historical seasons.”

Seven members of De Zerbi’s coaching staff will also leave but first-team coach Andrew Crofts and goalkeeper coach Stern will remain with the club.

Andrew Omobamidele scored an own goal to gift Brighton victory and dent Nottingham Forest’s chances of Premier League survival.

The Forest defender turned Pascal Gross’ curling free-kick into his own goal in the 29th minute.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side pushed in search of an equaliser after the break but a lack of quality in the final third meant they failed to salvage a crucial point.

EPL: Brighton beat Palace as pressure grows on Hodgson

Brighton scored three first-half goals as they beat rivals Crystal Palace comfortably in the Premier League to heap pressure on Eagles boss Roy Hodgson.

Palace started poorly and went behind in the opening five minutes for the second successive game when Lewis Dunk rose highest to head in a corner from Pascal Gross.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side dominated the ball throughout the first half and they doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Jack Hinshelwood headed in Tariq Lamptey’s cross at the back post.

It got worse for the visitors a minute later when deadline-day signing Adam Wharton was caught in possession, and Gross teed up Facundo Buonanotte to score easily from close range.

EPL: Brighton beat Man United 3-1

Manchester United were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford as the home crowd turned on manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag has enjoyed the overwhelming backing of United fans since his arrival last summer and the majority have supported the Dutchman in his current dispute with winger Jadon Sancho.

But they let Ten Hag know they did not agree with his decision to replace new signing Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial 19 minutes into the second period in no uncertain manner, as a cacophony of boos rang round the stadium before the Dane was applauded off.

The change didn’t make much difference for United, who were behind thanks to a first-half goal from one-time home favourite Danny Welbeck, which was followed up after the interval by efforts from Pascal Gross and substitute Joao Pedro, who were both given far too much space around the United penalty box.

Hannibal Mejbri’s first United goal gave the hosts some hope, but in a frenetic finish it was the visitors who came closest to finding the net again as Andre Onana made four excellent saves, the best of which came in injury-time to deny on-loan Barcelona man Ansu Fati a debut goal.

It was United’s first home defeat in 13 months, when Brighton again triumphed here. The Seagulls are now on a run of four successive Premier League wins over their hosts, and this victory brought more boos at the final whistle, though not on anywhere near the same scale as when Hojlund was withdrawn.

Ten Hag’s side have now conceded 10 goals in their last four games, and have also conceded more than one in four successive league matches for the first time since 1979. BBC
