BAT boosts economy with N500b taxes, 350,000 jobs

The British American Tobacco (BAT) has been lauded for its economic impact on the nation’s economy. This is on the heels of its over N500 billion in tax remittances, the creation of 350,000 jobs, and the generation of $110 million in foreign exchange annually into the country.

The commendations came during a courtesy visit to the company’s factory in Ibadan by the President of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), Otunba Francis Meshioye, and the Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, and other diginitaries. The visit, aimed at strengthening collaboration between the government and the manufacturing sector, highlighted BAT’s role as a dedicated member of MAN and a strategic contributor to Nigeria’s industrial development.

Meshioye praised BAT for its adherence to high operational standards and dedication to excellence, particularly in the areas of safety, quality, and innovation.

“From the moment we arrived, BAT’s dedication to safety, quality, and innovation was evident. The company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) induction process reflects its strong commitment to workplace safety and employee welfare. I encourage BAT to intensify its transition to reduced-risk products. MAN remains committed to supporting BAT’s initiatives and recognises its leadership in the sector,” Meshioye stated.

Echoing Meshioye’s sentiments, the MAN Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, commended BAT for its resilience and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian manufacturing landscape, particularly amid regulatory challenges.

“BAT stands out as a responsible and committed member of MAN, effectively addressing industry challenges. The government needs to support businesses that adhere to regulations, and BAT exemplifies this commitment. We deeply appreciate BAT’s substantial contributions to the manufacturing sector and encourage the company to continue its efforts,” he noted.

The delegation’s visit included a guided tour of the BAT factory, where they observed the company’s rigorous Environmental, Health, and Safety protocols. This tour coincided with BAT celebrating an impressive milestone of four years of zero lost-time incidents at the Ibadan facility – a testament to its strong safety culture and operational excellence.

BAT’s Operations Director, Hasnain Ishtiaq, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability, safety, and innovation.

“At BAT, we are dedicated to building A Better Tomorrow by prioritising employee safety, minimising our environmental impact, and embracing sustainable practices. Our mission is to continue innovating and leading the industry while upholding responsible manufacturing standards,” he stated.

He also highlighted the company’s long-standing legacy, noting that BAT has been present in Nigeria since 1912, with the Ibadan facility commissioned in 2003.

“With N500 billion in tax remittances (2018–2024), we have created over 350,000 jobs and strengthened Nigeria’s economy,” he said.

He further emphasised the factory’s economic contributions, stating, “The Ibadan factory, with 16 production lines, generates up to $110 million in foreign exchange annually.”
