Buhari commended the company for taking full advantage of the pro-business policies put in place by his administration aimed at attracting domestic and direct foreign investment which have already started yielding positive results for the people of the country.

He said: “Your competitive and aggressive activity has brought you success. I am pleased that you are investing in a critical area, the oil industry, in which I have developed interest. I am happy you are training Nigerians and giving them respectful jobs. What you are doing shows that whoever tries will succeed.”

The Chairman of the company, Chief Oladipo Jadesimi said the management  had come to thank  Buhari for creating an enabling environment and anti-corruption regime that have enabled their business to create a $10 billion investment and 50,000 new jobs.

  • Buhari approves N6.5 billion for irrigation projects

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has approved N6.5 billion for some irrigation projects, Minister of Water Resources Suleiman Adamu has said.

The minister said the N6.5 billion was part of a N13 billion counterpart funding needed to implement the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria Project (TRIMING).

He said the World Bank was ready to invest $495 million as a credit facility for the TRIMING project.

Adamu stated this yesterday while reeling out his three years scorecard as a minister and also to celebrate Nigeria Media Water Week in Abuja.

He said the Buhari administration initiated the National Irrigation Development Programme to aid diversification of the economy, guarantee food security and create employment.

The minister added that the administration’s effort on irrigation would enable it deliver 42,000 hectares of irrigated farmland in 2018 and 41,000Ha in 2019.

He said the target is to achieve 500,000Ha irrigated farmland by 2030 under the project.

The minister said: “To aid diversification of our economy, guarantee food security and create employment, we have initiated the National Irrigation Development Programme which is aimed to establish additional 100,000Ha of irrigated farmland by 2020 and another 500,000Ha by 2030.

“We also plan for additional 1,000,000Ha of irrigable land to be developed by the private sector and state governments within the same period. Our current effort will enable us to deliver 42,000Ha in 2018 and 41,000Ha in 2019.

“The World Bank is supporting the implementation of TRIMING with a credit facility of $495 million. The project involves rehabilitation, expansion of about 42,000Ha of irrigation land under the first phase to be completed by 2022.

“The counterpart funding required for TRIMING is in the region of N13 billion and President Muhammadu Buhari has graciously approved 50 per cent of that counterpart funding.

“We expect the project to proceed at the speed of light.”

The minister said on assumption of office in 2015, he undertook a technical audit and review of projects in the water sector and discovered that there were 116 abandoned and uncompleted water projects left behind by past administrations.

The minister said this enabled his ministry to prioritise the 116 uncompleted and abandoned projects.

He added that the ministry, under his watch, only added two new projects – which he did not name, to the ones he met on ground.

The minister also said his ministry under its National Water Resources Masterplan and Roadmap identified that Nigeria had hydropower potential of 12,220 megawatts.

He said only 1,930MW of this potential has been developed at Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro dams.

“We are currently making progress for the concessioning of 30MW Gurara Hydropower plant, which is planned to come into full operations soon. We are also progressing on our collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to concession the 40MW Kashimbila hydropower plant, recently completed.

“We are in advanced discussions with potential investors for other hydropower projects, including Gurara II (350MW), Lokoja (750MW) and Makurdi (1,000MW), among others,” the minister added.

  • PDP accuses Buhari, APC of plots to liquidate party’s stakeholders’ accounts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has  alleged plots by the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to procure frivolous court orders from “compromised” judicial officers to garnishee accounts belonging to PDP and critical stakeholders, perceived to be against the President’s re-election bid.

The opposition party said it’s already aware of how instructions have been given to certain agencies of government to trail and throw up fabrications in order to create an impression of financial infractions around the said accounts.

A statement last night by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said already, accounts belonging to critical stakeholders were being frisked with a view to having them liquidated ahead of the general elections.

The statement said, “It is clear that the only reason for this is to ensure that our party and candidates are deprived of access to funds for campaigns, but the APC and the Buhari Presidency fail to realise that the 2019 election is now a battle between them and Nigerians, who are the bastion of the PDP.

“Nigerians have since taken over the saddle for the quest to rid the nation of this incompetent, vicious and vengeful administration, for which they are now freely making contributions and sacrifices.

“They have collectively resolved to vote out President Buhari and not even the APC’s on-going vote-buying strategy and intimidation can scuttle that resolve”.

  • Traders plan Dec. 6 one million-man march for Buhari

The Grassroots Mobilisers for Buhari (GMB) and the Abuja chapter of the Arewa Traders’ Association plans a one-million man march in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection on December 6.

GMB is a political association saddled with the task of ensuring electoral victory for the President in the February 2019 election.

National Chairperson of GMB Dr Fatima Goni said the agreement was reached at a meeting between the leaderships of the two associations in Abuja.

The Chairman Arewa Traders’ Association, Abuja chapter, Alhaji Adamu Hassan, said the association, with membership from 63 market areas in the FCT and its environs, voluntarily agreed to join GMB to ensure electoral victory for Buhari in 2019.

He said:  “Apart from organising the one million-march in support of Buhari/Osinbajo ticket on Dec. 6, we are also working towards mobilising about 23 million of our members across the country to vote for Buhari/Osinbajo in 2019.

“We will be doing all these in partnership with the GMB with our little resources because of our love for President Buhari and the achievements of his administration so far.’’

Goni, who is popularly referred to as Mama GMB, said the association would soon commence public procession in major streets across the country in support of the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket.

She said: “Our campaign strategies include polling to polling mobilisation of voters and continuing sustenance of public enlightenment through media support.

“Our strategies will also use structures across the federation to counter the negative narratives being propagated by retrogressive forces.

“We require your kind understanding and patriotic support which shall be adequately complemented by our personnel resources to achieve a dynamic result in the monitoring and countering of anti-government propaganda.

“This is the time for all who are deeply concerned about the prospects and challenges of our democratic growth and national progress to rise and be counted on the positive side of history where the Buhari administration has steadfastly striven to place our great country, Nigeria.’’

She commended the leadership and members of the association for being part of the forward-looking, pragmatic and progressive cause which the Buhari administration had continued to represent.

Goni pledged to forward all the challenges facing members of the association to relevant authorities with a view to addressing them.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the GMB, Alhaji Umar Farouk, said the association had intensified efforts to mobilise over 10 million of its members nationwide towards ensuring electoral victory for President Buhari in the presidential election.

Farouk said the political association was formed in 2014 to promote President Buhari’s political ambition and good governance.

Also yesterday, National Coordinator of Buhari Achievement Awareness Forum, one of the support group working for the second term bid of the President, Alhaji Bashir Bale, said the achievements and development stride of President Buhari would ensure his victory.

Alhaji Bale who spoke at the lunch of the Forum in Suleja said however that it was unfortunate that majority of those living at the grassroot were unaware of the vast development stride of the President hence the establishment of the forum.

He said the forum had so far, identified 5,000 viable people-oriented projects of the Buhari administration which it would be showcasing to the people during the tour, using pamphlets and other instruments.

He said the pamphlet had been printed in the country`s three major languages of Igbo, Yuruba and Hausa and in pidgin English for better understanding.

In Enugu, the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) launched Zikist-Buharist-Movement (ZBM) to mobilise massive votes for Buhari in the South-East.

A communiqué after the BSO South-East Summit by Chief Stanley Ohajuruka and Godwin Onwusi, South-East Coordinator and Acting Secretary of BSO, said:  “Our study shows that the total membership of all the political parties APC, PDP, APGA, UPP et al is less than 30 per cent of the electorate.

“And that the turnout of registered voters in the previous elections has been very poor, which makes it imperative that we have to mobilize in order to achieve 2019 massive vote for President Buhari and 2023 Presidential Turn of Ndigbo.

“In this connection, we today launch the Zikist-Buharist-Movement (ZBM), a non-partisan movement aimed at mobilising Ndigbo both at home and abroad.

“The ZBM in the best tradition of the great Zik, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, want to reopen the ancient North-East political alliance, which without the exclusion of any geopolitical zone earned Ndigbo indelible laurels in the 1st and 2nd Republics.

“BSO South East proclamation that 2023 is our turn to produce Nigeria president of Igbo extraction is based on equity, natural justice and good conscience.

“For it is our considered view that the rotation of president convention from Southern Belt to Northern Belt introduced by patriots in 1999; 4th Republic, when Nigeria returned to civil rule, is for equity, natural justice, and harmony of our dear country.

“It is based on equity, natural justice and good conscience that we remind ourselves that since 1999, the South East geopolitical zone is the only geopolitical zone in the Southern Belt which has not presided over Nigeria.

“And it is on record that despite the truism that His Excellencies, Dr Alex Ekwueme and Dr Ogbonnia Onu, were shoved aside in Jos and Kaduna presidential primaries, respectively. Ndigbo albeit voted overwhelmingly for the winner, ex-President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of the South West, who served for eight years’’.

It recalled that in 2010 and 2015, Ndigbo repeated the same voting pattern by voting overwhelmingly for ex-President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, adding that it was clear that Ndigbo supported their two Southern brothers, even when South West in 1999 refused to vote for Obasanjo, meaning that `Ndigbo has paid their dues’.

The communiqué stated further: “BSO South East in deep reflection asked ourselves, what option in a scenario where two Fulani-Muslim brothers – Buhari and Atiku – are front liners in the 2019 Presidential Election, who could the great Zik choose if he were alive?

“In answering this germane question, we said two major critical issues will readily come to Zik’s mind – one, whom between the two of them has the support of the North; two, what is their programmes?

“As a pragmatist, the great Zik would readily choose President Buhari who has uncommon cult followership in the northern belt. This choice is based on the pragmatism that for us to achieve the Igbo presidency, we need Buhari’s supporters not only in the north but nationwide.

“On the second issue, the great Zik would be attracted by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar’s promise to restructure the country in six months in office; but as a pragmatist he will reason that it cannot be achieved by Fiat-Executive-Order.

“Whereas the Atiku restructuring mantra is appetizing, the truism is that it cannot be done by Fiat-Executive Order, but by the amendment of the rigid 1999 Constitution. All that glitters is not gold, the sage says’’.

The statement said that APC and by extension President Buhari was not against restructuring, otherwise they could not have set up the Malam El-Rufia Committee on Restructuring and its report receiving attention.

On the issue of four years, it said that Buhari’s remaining four years after 2019 is cast on constitutional stone, while Atiku’s is at best pledge.

“In summary, we call on Ndigbo both at home and abroad, to join the ZBM to actualise this noble objective of over 80 per cent massive vote for the performing president, President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ it said.

The summit was attended by BSO and APC chieftains including Chief Osita Okechukwu of Voice of Nigeria (VON); the Director-General, Nigerian Film Commission, Mr Chidia Maduekwe; National Commissioner of National Population Commission, Mr Ejike Eze, and National Chairman of BSO, Dr Abubakar Mahmood.

Others are Enugu State BSO Coordinator, Mr Anike Nwoga; Imo State BSO Coordinator, Adaobi Obi; Enugu State APC Publicity Secretary, Mrs Kate Offor, and the Senatorial Candidate of APC in Enugu East, Prince Lawrence Eze.

Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) South East Zone at the weekend launched the Zikist-Buharist-Movement (ZBM), in a bid to guarantee victory for the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari.

The movement was launched at the South East Zonal Summit of BSO, held in Enugu to mobilise APC members and non partisan Ndigbo at home and Diaspora to vote for Buhari in 2019.

This move, BSO posited, would reinforce their bid for Nigeria president of Igbo extradition when it gets to the turn of Ndigbo in 2023.

The group explained that as a Pragmatist, the late Owelle of Onitsha, Nnamdi Azikiwe would readily have chosen President Muhammadu Buhari of APC who has uncommon cult followership in the northern belt, ahead of his Fulani kinsman, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

BSO noted that whereas the Atiku restructuring mantra sounds appetizing, restructuring cannot be done by Fiat-Executive Order, but by the cumbersome amendment process of the rigid 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a communiqué released after the summit, signed by Stanley Ohajuruka, South-East Coordinator and Godwin Onwusi, Acting Secretary, the ZBM, the BSO proclaimed “is a non-partisan movement launched to go beyond the party lines in mobilising and scaling up votes for Buhari.”

According to the communiqué, BSO South East in order to actualise this noble objective adopted pragmatism as the key strategy, in the sense that the 2023 President turn of Ndigbo Project is a non-partisan bid.

The communiqué read in part: “Our study shows that the total membership of all the political parties APC, PDP, APGA, UPP et al is less than 30% of that of the electorate. And that the turnout of registered voters in the previous elections has been very poor, which makes it imperative that we have to mobilize in order to achieve 2023 President Turn Ndigbo.

Ndigbo albeit voted overwhelmingly for the winner, ex-president, Dr Olusegun Obasanjo of the South West, who served for eight years”.

BSO recalled that in 2010 and 2015, Ndigbo repeated the same voting pattern by voting overwhelmingly for ex-president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

The group made it clear that Ndigbo supported their two Southern brothers, even when South West in 1999 refused to vote for Obasanjo, meaning that Ndigbo had paid our dues.

The communiqué stated further: “BSO South East in deep reflection asked ourselves, what option in a scenario where two Fulani Muslim brothers – Buhari and Atiku are front liners in the 2019 Presidential Election, who could the great Zik choose if he were alive?

  • Buhari a responsible leader, says HYPREP coordinator

The Project Coordinator of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), Dr. Marvin Dekil, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as a responsive and responsible leader.

He spoke in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the weekend, during the 23rd Ogoni Martyrs Day, marking the hanging of a renowned environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and eight Ogoni activists at Port Harcourt Prisons.

They were executed during the regime of the late Gen. Sani Abacha on November 10, 1995.

At the remembrance organised by Movement for Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Dekil said: “The Ogoni fallen heroes paid the supreme price for the wellbeing of their people. They left a worthy legacy by laying down their lives for a cause they believed in. What they fought for is gradually coming to fruition, with the setting up of HYPREP, to address the issue of environmental pollution, which was one of the demands of Ogoni people, as presented by Saro-Wiwa to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“President Buhari came to power five years after the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) submitted a world-class report on the state of the Ogoni environment to the Federal Government, with sets of recommendations on the clean-up of the oil impacted environment of Ogoniland.

“As a responsive and responsible leader, committed to correcting the wrongs that the people of the Niger Delta have suffered over the years, President Buhari, on assumption of office, immediately constituted the Governing Council, the Board of Trustees and the Project Coordi

  • Jail terms no longer deterrence for illicit financial flow, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said that the sanctions of jail terms for illicit financial flow is no longer sufficient to fight the menace.
According to him, stringent actions should be taken against perpetrators of illicit financial flows, including crackdown on safe heavens and return of stolen assets to countries of origin.
He spoke while delivering his statement on “Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) and Corruption: The Challenge of Global Governance’’ at the Peace Forum attended by about 70 world leaders in Paris, France.
The Forum was organised by the French Government and a number of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

It was based on the simple idea that international cooperation is key to tackling global challenges and ensuring durable peace.

Buhari warned that continuous impunity will encourage more pilfering of countries’ resources to the detriment of poor and vulnerable populace.

Nigeria, he said, has strengthened its laws and institutions to fight corruption, fast-track recovery of stolen assets and punish offenders.
He called for more commitment from governments and international organizations.
He said that illicit financial flows pose a risk to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as many countries grapple with the challenge of gathering resources to improve their Human Development Index, while a few privileged individuals continue to explore the weaknesses in financial systems.
He said “Our experience in Nigeria is that financial crimes, such as corruption and fraudulent activities, generate enormous unlawful profits which often prove so lucrative that the threat of a jail term is not sufficient to deter perpetrators.

“A more powerful deterrent is to ensure that profits and assets generated from illicit financial flows and corruption are recovered and returned to countries of origin.

“This is not to under-estimate the value of strong institutions. It only indicates that asset recovery represents significant deterrence compared to the traditional focus on obtaining conviction by the law enforcement agencies of the countries of origin.

“As we take stock of the strengths and weaknesses of domestic, regional and international mechanisms against Illicit Financial Flows, I seize this opportunity to recall the Global Declaration Against Corruption made in London in 2016 and our commitment thereto.

“Among other things, the Declaration encapsulates our collective commitment to the principles of Open Government Partnership, especially the National Action Plans to actualize beneficial ownership transparency, enhance the capacity of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), reinforce Independent Reporting Mechanisms and support the activities of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes. We should remain resolute in our commitment to the aforementioned goals.

“Similarly, we must crack down on safe havens for corrupt assets. I also advocate sanctions by professional bodies against transactional middlemen (lawyers, bankers, brokers, public officials, etc.) who facilitate Illicit Financial Flows.

“I would like to reiterate that the Government of Nigeria remains open and is ever willing to continue to identify and share experiences and strategies to give life to the ideas that will lead to winning the fight against corruption.” he said

He urged the world leaders and global institutions to remain resolute on the Global Declaration Against Corruption made in London in 2016, which encapsulates the collective commitment to the principles of Open Government Partnership, especially the National Action Plans to actualize beneficial ownership transparency and enhance the capacity of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs).
Buhari also called reinforcement of the Independent Reporting Mechanisms and support for the activities of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes.
“As we take stock of the strengths and weaknesses of domestic, regional and international mechanisms against Illicit Financial Flows, I seize this opportunity to recall the Global Declaration Against Corruption made in London in 2016 and our commitment thereto,’’ he said.
According to him, tremendous progress has been achieved through the enactment of global instruments, adding that some fundamental technical issues have remained unresolved.
“These revolve around the formulation of policy and regulatory frameworks that cut across different jurisdictions. We must not lose sight of the role played by secret companies, banks and law firms, all too often based in developed economies and their related offshore centres.
“Recent studies reveal that flaws in the global financial system enable corrupt individuals to hide details of their financial dealings under the noses of governments and law enforcement agencies.
“This underscores the need to urgently address the issue of Mutual Legal Assistance, as well as continental legal frameworks, in the context of safe havens for illicit transfers,’’ he said.
The Whistle-Blowing policy in Nigeria, he said, has facilitated recovery of billions of naira from corrupt persons, which had been redirected to the development of critical infrastructure and programmes that will benefit all Nigerians and realisation of the SDGs.
At the continental level, the President said the African Union had bestowed on him the honour to champion the fight against corruption, which would be focused on strengthening international cooperation on asset tracing, recovery and repatriation, and enhancing cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations’ anti-corruption monitoring mechanisms.

“Finally, let me reiterate the importance of unity and collective action. It is only together that we stand a better chance to win the fight against the menace of Illicit Financial Flows and corruption.” he stated

The President is scheduled to meet Nigerians living in France on Monday.

  • Group explains why South must return Buhari for second term

Apressure group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Ifesowapo Society, has explained why the people of the Southern part of Nigeria must return President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term. In a statement by its President, Samuel Jegede, the group said if a Northern candidate different from Buhari is voted into office in 2019, the South will have to wait for another eight years to produce a president. He said it is wise for the people of the south-east and south-west geo-political zones, to support the second term bid of Buhari in their own common interest. Jegede said, now is the time for the Southern politicians and people to rally support for Buhari to complete the eight-year tenure which is due constitutionally for him rather than allow a fresh candidate from the north to open a new chapter of another two term tenure. He advised Nigerians to make the Buhari administration continue its fight against corruption in order to consolidate on its gains so that Nigeria could regain respect among comity of nations. The leader of the group described Buhari’s integrity as uncommon, stressing that he fears no man but only God, and therefore, needs “the support of every Nigerian to succeed.” He maintained, that, no one among the current presidential candidates, could match Buhari’s integrity, patriotism and commitment to Nigeria. Jegede, who also commended Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, for his commitment to good governance, said, that his contribution to the development of Osun in the last eight years would remain evergreen.

  • Buhari declares state of emergency on water, sanitation

•’Nigeria ranks second in global open defecation’

Nigeria cannot afford to allow water borne diseases to keep decimating its population, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.

The President, who stated this while inaugurating National Action Plan for Revitalisation of Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector at the State House, has, therefore, declared a state of emergency on water supply, sanitation and hygiene sector.

He decried the country’s No. 2 rating in the global report on defecation, which claims that about 25 per cent of Nigeria’s population  practising open defecation.

Buhari said the declaration has become imperative to reduce the high-prevalence of water-borne diseases in different parts of the country.

He noted that the situation is causing preventable deaths, adding that he was aware that Nigeria did not meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)  targets for Water Supply and Sanitation that ended in 2015.

While emphasising that the provision of potable water supply, adequate sanitation and hygiene were primarily the responsibilities of state and local governments, he directed government at all levels to redouble efforts and work towards meeting the nation’s water supply and sanitation needs.

He said available statistics on open defecation, access to pipe borne water services and sanitation in the country ‘’were disturbing’’.

The President warned that henceforth, the Federal Government’s support to state would be based on their commitment to the implementation of the National Action Plan for Revitalisation  of the Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector in their respective state and plans to end open defecation by 2025.

He lamented: “Access to pipe-borne water services, which was 32 per  cent in 1990, has declined to seven per cent in 2015; access to improved sanitation has also decreased from 38 per  cent in 1990 to 29 per  cent in 2015.

“Our country now ranks No 2 in the global rating on Open Defecation as about 25 per  cent of our population are practicing open defecation.

‘’WASH services at the rural areas are unsustainable as 46 per cent of all water schemes are non-functional, and the share of our spending on WASH sector has been declining from 0.70 per cent of the GDP in 1990 to about 0.27  per cent in 2015, which is far below the 0.70 per cent at the West African regional level.”

He added: “However, these are not being given the required attention judging from the high prevalence of water-borne diseases that are being reported in different parts of the country.

‘’We cannot and will not continue to allow these preventable occurrences to decimate our population…

‘’I call on all state governments to complement this effort by according the sector similar recognition to enable us work together to achieve the SDG targets for WASH by 2030.”

Buhari assured that his administration would keep placing priority on infrastructure growth, including water supply, sanitation and hygiene services towards ensuring a better life for Nigerians.

Minister of Water Resources Suleiman Adamu said open defecation reduced the dignity of a nation and has reduced school enrollment and attendance due to loss of time in search of water and frequent episodes of water and sanitation related illnesses as well as poor access to hygiene management facilities in schools.

Deputy Country Representative of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria, Pernille Ironson, who spoke on behalf of development partners on WASH, said: “The Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of Environment and state governments need to work together for all Nigerians to have clean water and sanitation.”

Presently, the WASH programme is operational in six states of Imo, Abia, Delta, Taraba, Niger and Sokoto.

  • Buhari express concern over increase in terrorism, organised crime

    •Saraki canvases continental synergy

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed concern over rise in menace of terrorism, arms banditry and other organised crimes.

He challenged African parliamentarians to develop strategies to assist African governments to combat such menace and ensure the continent’s growth.

Buhari spoke at the 73rd session of the Executive Committee and 41st Conference of Speakers of National Parliaments of African Parliamentary Union.

The President said the proliferation of arms, aided by abuse of the ease of movement of persons across freer borders to encourage unity, has given rise to acts of terrorism by groups like Al-Shaabab, ISIS and Boko Haram.

He told them that working in collaboration with neigbouring countries, Nigeria has done a lot to reverse the terror trend and halt the advancement of Boko Haram.

The collaboration, he added, has strengthened the countries’ armed forces as well as initiated programmes to address widespread poverty, which, he said was identified as a significant factor fueling unrest and boosting terror recruitment.

He stressed that in spite of the progress so far made, “we are not unmindful of the remaining challenge of armed invaders, who ransack villages and small farming communities and commit terrible acts, including the cold-blooded murder of women and children”.

Buhari expressed delight at the plan to promote girl-child education as a way of addressing the menace of early marriage by the APU panel of Women Parliamentarians.

The President assured that Nigeria and others countries were ready to consider input on the subject with a view to improving the condition of the African girl-child.

Buhari, who is also the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of Governments, also expressed the willingness of his leadership of the regional body to fast-track the adoption of the APU resolutions at the ECOWAS sub region and African Union (AU).

  • Minimum Wage Saga: Stiff judgment awaits you at polls, Presidency tells Atiku group

The Presidency has criticised the concocted controversy over President Muhammadu Buhari’s position on proposed N30,000 by some political actors to score cheap political goals, saying “stiff judgment awaits them at the polls’’.

Mr Femi Adesina, made the condemnation in a statement in Abuja on Thursday while reacting to comments apparently made by the Atiku media office.

In a statement issued by his media office, Atiku had allegedly claimed that “President Buhari cannot be trusted to implement the ‘new’ minimum wage of N30, 000’’ recommended by the Pepple tripartite committee.

Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said “Buhari may not have the political will to implement the new wage’’.

However, Adesina said: “Those who have latched onto the concocted controversy to play cheap politics, we appeal to them to remember that elections are not won through loquaciousness, and trying to demean the President at every drop of a hat.

“But then, it is not surprising, as they have nothing else to sell to Nigerians, if they don’t ride on the name of the President. Stiff judgment awaits them at the polls.’’

The presidential aide therefore frowned at the recurring reports alleging that Buhari had reneged on earlier acceptance of the N30,000 recommended as the new National Minimum Wage by the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.

He noted that these reports were contrary to what transpired on Tuesday when the committee presented its Report to the President.

He said the president, while acknowledging the concerns raised by government on affordability and labour’s focus on meaningful increase, stated clearly in a speech, which was made available to the media that:

“In a way, both arguments are valid. I want to assure you all that we will immediately put in place the necessary machinery that will close out these open areas.

“Our plan is to transmit an Executive Bill to the National Assembly for passage within the shortest possible time. I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.

“As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report. I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks.”

Adesina observed that: “From the above, and throughout the report-submission ceremony, the President never mentioned any figure. What he committed himself to was a new minimum wage, and only after the Report of the committee has been reviewed by the executive and legislative processes of government and an appropriate bill presented to him for assent.

“Until the proposed minimum wage has gone through the whole gamut of law-making, President Buhari, who is a stickler for due process, will not be caught in this unnecessary web of controversy, which amounts to putting the cart before the horse and hair-splitting’’.
