  • Saraki’s acquittal: Judiciary is working, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the judiciary for its commitment despite various challenges.

Buhari, reacting yesterday to Friday’s acquittal of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the Supreme Court of wrong declaration of assets, said the judicial system is truly working irrespective of the challenges it is facing.

No one, he said, should therefore be allowed to undermine or break it.

“I have seen many instances where individuals and groups seek the destruction of the judicial institution in the foolish thinking of saving their skin, instead of going through the painstaking process of establishing their innocence,” Buhari’s  Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted him as saying in a statement in Abuja.

He added:”In the case of the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, I have seen him take the tortuous path of using the judicial process.

“He persevered, and in the end, the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court, says he is not guilty as charged.

“This is what I have done in the three elections in which I was cheated out, before God made it possible for me to come here the fourth time I ran for the office.”

The president said the Senate president’s journey from the lowest to the highest court of the land provides an important example for Nigerians to emulate.

  • Buhari right on June 12, M.K.O – Akarigbo

The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, has said the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the late Chief M.K.O Abiola and recognise June 12 as the authentic Democracy Day in Nigeria is a brilliant decision that has further showed the world that Nigeria is capable of resolving its differences and move on to greatness as a nation.

The monarch also rejoiced with the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Gbadebo, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and all the people of Ogun State on the occasion, saying the soul of the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 election can now rest in peace.

Oba Ajayi, in a release made available to reporters from his palace in Sagamu, said the timing and motive of the recognition is irrelevant. “The basic question to address is whether it was the right thing to do. By any stretch of imagination reasoning and logic, it is indeed the right thing to do. God bless all those behind the decision. The Abiola family, the good people of Ogun State and indeed Nigerians can now take solace in realising that that MKO Abiola did not die in vain,’ Kabiesi said.

  • Buhari checkmated corruption in petroleum sector -IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) at the weekend said President Muhammadu Buhari has checkmated the corruption in the petroleum sector.

Its national secretary, Alhaji Danladi Pasali, who is also the National Coordinator, Buhari Campaign Organisation, spoke while receiving members of the National Youth Council in his Abuja office.

He called for the re-election of Buhari, saying under his watch, the nation has stopped spending 60 per cent of its budget on corruption -ridden fuel subsidy otherwise known as Petroleum Support Fund (PSF).

He noted with the intervention of the current administration, there is glut of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) market, which the retail outlets now beg motorists to buy.

His words: “It is clear now that petrol stations beg people to come in and buy products. Go round now, all the petrol stations have products and they are calling people to come and buy.

“It is better because there are no more queues. There is no more spending 60 percent of our budget to pay for subsidy.

“We don’t experience this. So, the corruption aspect in the system has been checkmated.”

  • Youth group: Buhari can end killings

The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO) yesterday affirmed their stand with the current administration, saying that President Muhammadu Buhari is capable of ending the killings across the country.

The National Secretary of BYO, Engr. Garba Umar, said this during a briefing titled ‘Support Buhari 2019’ held at the organisation’s secretariat in Abuja yesterday.

Umar said that the present administration has done much more than its predecessors in terms of security and ending violence, especially in the northern part of the country.

He said: “Before this administration, we all knew where we were in Nigeria. We spent almost three years in curfew in Borno and Yobe states because of insecurity. Killings were the order of the day.

“However, today, with President Muhammadu Buhari, we can roam the streets in the Northeast as you can roam the streets anywhere in Nigeria.

“Nobody can remember the last time we heard of a bomb blast in any of the major cities in the northeast.

“This tells you that this government is doing much better than the 16 wasted years of governance which could not even contain a small problem.

“Today, the issue of Boko Haram is 75 per cent tackled, and I can say this authoritatively because I come from Yobe.

“Since this government has succeeded in combating the issue of Boko Haram, I am sure that they will resolve the issue of the killings going on across the country.”

The organisation which is centered on youth empowerment in Nigeria is planning its official launch in a ceremony at Eagle Square, Abuja on July 10.

Its National Chairman, Ali Barakat, said the purpose of the ceremony is to bring together all the members of the group to show solidarity for President Buhari.

“The members in rural areas need to know the executives of the organisation. That is why we are coming together.

“We also want to show Nigeria that we are strongly behind President Buhari and we will continue to support him in the upcoming 2019 elections,” he said.

  • Buhari’s Executive Order a descent to fascism – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday rejected the sixth item of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order dealing with the seizure of suspicious assets.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party condemned the Order, describing it as illegal, unconstitutional, reprehensible and in total disregard to the provisions of the Constitution.

According to the PDP, the Nigerian Constitution does not, under any section, confer such fascist powers on the President in a democracy.

It added that there can be no legitimate latitude of interpretation placed on sections 5 and 15 (5) of the 1999 Constitution cited as justifications for the order, that can excuse it.

The statement said: “Therefore, President Buhari’s unilateral Executive Order is a travesty of justice and rule of law, as it vehemently seeks to hijack and usurp the powers of both the legislature and the courts and vest it on himself so that he can use same at will, as a political instrument, to haunt, traumatize, harass and victimize perceived political opponents.

“In order words, Mr. President wants to change our democratic governance to a military regime, in line with his lamentation, two days ago, that the fight against corruption will be better under a military regime than under a democracy.

“It is instructive to emphasize that the PDP is not in any way opposed to the fight against corruption. Rather, the party holds that the imposition of this Executive Order, which is radically at variance with the provisions of the constitution, is totally unacceptable.

“PDP takes this Executive Order 6 of 2018 as a reenactment of the obnoxious Decree 2 of 1984, which incidentally was also an enactment under then military Head of State headed by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and this must not be permitted in our current democratic dispensation.

“If allowed, this Order will confer limitless powers on Mr. President, whose administration’s penchant for violation of rules and order already suggests a readiness for autocracy and a drive towards fascism.

“In a democracy, the role of the executive arm of government is to enforce court orders/judgments handed down based on the interpretation of existing laws. Any suggestion to the contrary, as clearly intended by this Executive Order, is totally an aberration and inconsistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We invite Nigerians and the international community to note the deliberate attempts by the Buhari administration to side-step the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), usurp the powers of the legislature, the judiciary and impose an autocratic regime on our nation.

“The PDP therefore charges the judiciary and the legislature to save our dear nation and her people from an imminent fascism by rejecting this obnoxious Executive Order.

“Nigeria is a democratic state run by the dictates of the law and the constitution and not by the rule of the thumb of any elected officer.

“Already, our lawyers are considering a legal action against the Federal Government on the illegality of Mr. President’s action in the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.”

  • Buhari vows to punish politicians sponsoring violence in states

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday promised to fish out and punish politicians instigating violence in some states as a way of seeking relevance in the country’s politics.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the closing events of the 2018 Army Day celebrations, the President repeated what he told Christian leaders on Thursday, that a solution is being found to the deadly clashes between farmers and herdsmen and whosoever is found culpable would be prosecuted.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, President Buhari thanked the armed forces for keeping the country safe.

He acknowledged that there were still challenges faced by the nation.

He said: “This does not mean there are no challenges. There are pockets of violence in several states. Some deliberately instigated by disgruntled politicians who have lost all arguments and are desperate to cause mayhem as a way of seeking relevance. We shall fish them out and punish according to the provisions of the law.”

Making a self-assessment of his administration in the last three years, the President said “we have worked tirelessly to ensure and preserve the dignity and sanctity of life. When I was sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I promised that this administration would tackle the challenges of insecurity, poor economy and fight corruption.

“We are all witnesses to the fact that our once battered economy as a nation has exited recession and is once again vibrant. Our nation is safe again, thanks to the efforts of our security agencies.

“I want to use this opportunity to reassure the world, Nigerians and the families of the remaining kidnapped Chibok girls and Leah Sharebu of the Dapchi School girls that this administration would not relent in our efforts to see that they are all released.

“I also want to reassure all Nigerians that the issue of farmers and herdsmen clashes is being tackled and all those found culpable would be brought to justice. Let me quickly remind us at this point to always be tolerant, loving and ready to give peace a chance,” he added.

  • Niger Delta leaders urge Buhari to sack service chiefs

Some prominent Niger Delta leaders on Friday told President Muhammadu Buhari to sack his service chiefs as part of solution to the bloodletting in the country especially in the North Central.

The leaders said Buhari’s decision to renew the tenures of the service chiefs compounded the security challenges because it created internal rivalries in the key security agencies.

A renowned youth leader and former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, insisted that Buhari got the service chiefs’ tenure renewal wrong, adding that the action dampened the morale of subordinate officers in such agencies.

Eradiri said by the renewal, military officers felt shortchanged and were likely working at variance with the security chiefs.

He said: “The President is responsible for the conflict based on the actions that he took. When he extended indefinitely the tenures of service chiefs, it went a long way to kill the morale of subordinate officers who thought that they needed to put in their best because one day they would get to the top as service chiefs.

“But unfortunately the Presidency extended the tenures of the already expired service chiefs. Some of them had retired and some are already retiring but the President extended their tenures.

“In the Department of State Security (DSS), the President went and brought an officer who wasn’t doing so well while in office and was retired. He brought him to head DSS that requires loyalty from subordinates. He also killed the morale there.

“The same thing happened in the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). So, largely, the blame should be on the doorsteps of the presidency. I don’t like playing the ethnic cards even though it is sticking now. When you tell a story for too long it begins to stick. Everybody is adopting the narrative of ethnic cleansing.”

An elder statesman, Chief Thompson Okorotie, said the unabated killings of innocent Nigerians under whatever guise was condemnable.

“We have seen a lot in this country but it is easy to say we have not seen this kind of killings across the country. We are praying on a daily basis for the unity and peace of this country. We hope that the security agencies are also praying.”

  • Ex-minister Adamu Ciroma dies at 84

Former  Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Adamu Ciroma is dead.

The Minister of Finace (1999-2003) during the first term of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidency, according to family sources, died in a Turkish hospital in Abuja yesterday after a protracted illness. He was 84.

The late Ciroma, also a minister under President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic, was a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In 1979, Ciroma was one of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) presidential aspirants.

He came third in the primary, behind Shehu Shagari and Maitama Sule.

Ciroma was briefly the secretary of the NPN before serving at various times as Minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance.

Ciroma was born on November 20, 1934 in Potiskum, Yobe State. He graduated from the University of Ibadan and served in different capacities in the Public Service.  He was appointed to the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1970 where he served as a Director before his appointment as the Governor in 1975.

His remains were buried in Abuja yesterday.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Governors, All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Aiwaju Bola Tinubu, among others reacted to Ciroma’s passing.

In a statement by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President extended sincere condolences to the Ciroma family, the government and people of Yobe State on the passing of the elder statesman.

The President described Ciroma as a political leader and Federal cabinet minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance, at various points in his remarkable life, will be long remembered for his remarkable service and dedication to the country’s unity, progress and stability.

President Buhari also affirmed that he will be honoured for his contributions in promoting democracy in Nigeria and his legacies should be a constant reminder to politicians who wish to work for the good of their communities and our great country.

Senate President Bukola Saraki described the late politician’s death as monumental loss to the country.

In a statement, Saraki said: “Although death is painful, but it gladdens my heart that late Ciroma lived a worthy and successful life,” Saraki said.

“As a public servant, the late Ciroma’s integrity was unparalleled, as a politician, he was unblemished and as a journalist, he was among the finest breed.”

“Indeed there is no word or adjective that will be enough to describe late Ciroma, considering his invaluable contributions to the development of the country.

“We have lost a detribalised Nigerian, bridge builder and a strong pillar for nation’s unity. He will surely be remembered for his forthrightness and integrity. We shall miss him greatly”.

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara expressed sadness over the demise of an “icon of transparency and an epitome of integrity who lived an incorruptible life.

“Indeed we lost a great man, a patriot, leader par excellence and  a shining star.  Malam Adamu Ciroma was one of the few surviving close associates of the late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello and he remained a consistent advocate for the struggle to see Nigeria achieve the dreams of her founding fathers”.

“He was an intellectual genius and highly cosmopolitan public servant who exhibited high sense of patriotism, passion and enthusiasm for the progress and development of the country while serving as first indigenous Editor and Managing Director of New Nigerian Newspaper, CBN Governor and Minister of various portfolios in different administrations in Nigeria.”

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele described Ciroma as a very good man who was still of immense service to the apex bank. He said Ciroma was a firm believer in the sanctity and independence of the CBN.

“While we mourn the loss of a very good man, an astute central banker and a patriot, we also celebrate his remarkable life and contribution to the banking industry in Nigeria,” the CBN said.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said the country has lost one of its finenest elder statesman, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life.

“The late Mallam Ciroma was a quintessential civil servant and politician who served Nigeria in various capacities in the first and second republics as well as the military regimes and the fourth republic.

“The late elder statesman was a man of great intellect vision and politician who was a strong pillar that continues to support the unity and stability of Nigeria.

“The late elder statesman would be remembered for his political doggedness, commitment to national unity and selfless service to his father land. Nigeria has lost one of its finenest elder statesman, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life. He needs no thumb stone to remind us of his legacies. Yet the best remembrance is for those he has left behind to live up what he stood for.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki said: “I am saddened by the loss of elder statesman, Adamu Ciroma, whose passing was announced today at an Abuja hospital.

“Ciroma was a respected leader, who rose to serve Nigeria meritoriously when the occasion demanded. This can be gleaned from the number of public service offices he held and the panache with which he dispensed his roles.

“I hereby extend my condolences to the government and people of Yobe State, his hometown, Potiskum, and his immediate family. I pray that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said.

Obaseki noted that “Ciroma’s role as one of the architects of modern Nigeria cannot be controverted,” calling on youths to emulate his commitment to the Nigerian project.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola described Cirom as principled, recalling his famlus statement in the heat of the June 12, 1993 election annulment crisis, that Ciroma said the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the election “fatr and square.”

In a statement by his Media Adviser Sola Fasure, Aregbesola said: “The death of Mallam Adams Ciroma came to me with a rude shock.

“This was a highly respectable and influential politician and a reputable voice from the North.  He had been around since after the independence, taking part in major decisions that had shaped the country both in trying moment and in peace.

“He had witnessed Nigeria’s political development from the First Republic to the present democracy and participated in all, which made him one of the most highly experienced and informed politicians living in the country until his exit on Thursday. History will be kind to him”, adding:

“There is no denying the fact that the nation will in some days and years to come miss the experience and interventionist roles of this man of immense wisdom and political knowledge.”

Former Anambnra State Governor Peter Obi, described Ciroma as an elder statesman “that served the country creditably as the Governor of the Central bank and the Minister of Finance. While urging  the younger ones to emulate his spirit of service, he prayed for the repose of his soul.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said his world view was largely influenced by early contacts and mentorship that he received from the late Ciroma.

He said: “A lot of what I have turned out to be in life today was as a result of the early contacts and mentorship that I had with Adamu Ciroma, who graciously offered me vacation job in my formative years”, Atiku said.

Atiku said Ciroma’s honesty and patriotism were among his greatest virtues, adding that the deceased had left behind untainted public service record for which he would always be remembered.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed grief over the passing of the former Finance Minister and a chieftain of the party.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said the country has lost one of its finest; an incontrovertible patriot who spent his life making inestimable sacrifices for the unity and development of our dear country.

The PDP said, “Mallam Ciroma lived as a committed citizen; an astute administrator and highly disciplined politician, who  discharged all responsibilities vested in him with unequaled forthrightness and loyalty to the nation.

“On the political sphere, this great Nigerian will be remembered for his roles in ensuring the stability and growth of our nation, and particularly, the roles he played in the formation and growth of the PDP. He played a leading role in Group of 34 eminent Nigerians, otherwise called the G34, that formed the PDP.

“He was an embodiment of the ideals and visions of our great party in our pursuit of a prosperous nation where unity, equality and justice prevail.
