  • Plateau killings: Buhari calls for peace

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for calm in Plateau State after 86 people where killed by Fulani Herdsmen.
The President said this on Tuesday in Jos at a meeting with stakeholders on the current security situation in Plateau.
It would be recalled that scores of the people were killed in several communities across four local government areas of the state.
Vice President Yemi Osibanjo was in the State on Monday where he  assessed the situation and also interacted with stakeholders.
“I contested elections to protect lives and properties and that I will do.
“As Commander-in-Chief, I will continue to put pressure on the security chiefs to do what is needed of them,” he assured.
The President appealed to the people of to bury their differences and work together for the peace of the state.
He urged the residents to learn to live in peace with one another.
Buhari condemned the killings and charged the leadership at every level to be awake to their responsibility of driving the peace process.
He commiserated with the bereaved urging the leaders to  pass his message of condolence to those who lost their  loved ones.
Gov Simon Lalong thanked the President for coming personally after the visit of the  Vice President where far reaching decisions were reached after exhaustive discussions, attended by key stakeholders.
Lalong outlined steps taken by the government to descalate the crisis with support from the federal government.
He also  thanked the President for considering appeals for the establishment of Police Mobile Unit at Gashish, a flash point, and for the plans to compensate victims of the crises.
He, however, appealed to him to ensure those found to be behind the crises face the full wrath of the law.
“Mr President those who have been arrested and found guilty should be punished.”
Lalong said that all the parties involved in  the killings were guilty as there was no justification for their actions.
The governor condemed acts of  annexation of ancestral lands saying that his administration would not allow anybody to take another persons land.
He also condemned cattle rustling and other vices that negate peace building.

The President was accompanied on the visit by the governors of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, and Niger, Sani Bello.

Others, were the ministers of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazzau and Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed.

  • Insecurity: Time to separate the reality from the myth

If President Buhari is a novice in security management, probably by now he might have exhausted the list of the high ranking officers of the armed forces by daily substitution of its leadership going by needless calls for such removals for as little as road skirmishes. Going by the same demand, by May 2019 President Buhari would be searching among the rank and file of the armed forces for suitable candidates to manage Nigeria’s security.

For a rare kind of “blessing” every Nigerian is a security “expert” with all the requisite credentials to understand the enormity of the security management of a complex country like Nigeria. You find people with zero understanding of the security architecture of Nigeria calling President Buhari names when his decisions, generated by decades of training and experience, did not match their “computers games” or tales by moonlight idea of security management.

Among the current leadership of the armed forces are some of the finest officers that are respected across the globe. One of such officers is Lt-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai. Buratai didn’t happen by accident. He’s the end result of a careful and meticulous search for a meritorious officer to fill the serious gap between Nigeria’s quest for peace, the huge resources expended in that regard and the almost conquered nation inherited by President Buhari.

Whereas, Gen. Buratai is a celebrated officer across the globe, in Nigeria he is yet to be appreciated by cynics and “roadside security experts”. To Gen. Buratai’ credit, he is the only Nigerian military officer to have the honour of being invited to deliver a paper at the annual RUSI Land Warfare Conference in United Kingdom. Even more, he’s the only African to be invited to deliver a paper at the event twice in a succession – 2017/2018.

To the large collection of Nigeria’s “roadside security experts”, RUSI Land Warfare Conference is an annual event conducted by the UK Chief of the General Staff. The conference reflects on the breadth of challenges confronting today’s land forces in a global security environment characterised by constant competition and unpredictability. Making the list of speakers at the event is not “eating beans”. It’s an assemblage of the world best.

Even a blackened pot could appreciate the feat of achieving the honour of presenting a paper twice in a succession to the august conference as achieved by Gen. Buratai. Yet, this is the Nigerian military officer we love to bash for falling below our undefined and diverse expectations.

On a more practical term understandable to a layman, Nigeria of 2014 is not so distant a history for Nigeria’s assorted collection of “experts” to ignore the success of Gen. Buratai in halting and reversing the disintegration of Nigeria. Forget the lies about people electing President Buhari for any reason other than to save Nigeria from Boko Haram.

Who cared about poor healthcare services, poor education, poor electricity and almost absolute collapse infrastructure and other social services back in 2014? The only worry back then was, when (not if) will Boko Haram come knocking on our doors. The issue back then was how to get from point “A” to “B” without being blown to pieces. I’m sure majority Nigerians would have elected Diezeni Alison- Madueke president and expressly adjust the constitution to make it legal for her to steal as much as she could had she exhibited minimum capacity to save Nigeria from Boko Haram.

Very few people seem capable of recalling where we came from or how we got to where we are today otherwise, Gen. Buratai would be a national hero not the punching bag he is today. Today, to his credit, people could drive through Damaturu and Benesheikh to reach Maiduguri safely without incidences. These places were turned into human abattoirs where innocent commuters slaughtered in the most barbaric manner imaginable before the coming of President Buhari and Gen. Buratai. Ask any citizen from the N’Eastern Nigeria if back in 2014 he/she wouldn’t trade his/her Nigerian citizenship for a refugee status in Afghanistan or Iraq. Yes, it’s that bad!

Security is an ever evolving phenomenon which requires evolving methods to tackle. Solving security issues by blind debates of the applicability of measures put in place by the government to restore normalcy from behind the safety of iPads screens and without the requisite background to understand the complexities involved is the worst injustice being meted President Buhari and members of the armed forces supervising the process. We carelessly condemn the efforts of these officers and hardly appreciate the sacrifices they are making for us to live. We demand to know even critical informations that requires utmost secrecy and could mean the difference between life and death to the gallant officers fighting a war on our behalf.

We should appreciate that each time we carelessly hit the keyboard to condemn these officers, there’s a high chance that one (or more) of them is dying just for you to survive. If the best support you could offer them is sharing their pictures on the social media when they are gunned down, please save your support. What they require is our collective encouragement and appreciation. Certainly, twisting the narratives to suit our political whims is unpatriotic. No matter how effective President Buhari and his service chiefs could be, peace could only be achieved if the people agree to live in peace and harmony.

Those who should know and those with the requisite capacity to assess the situation properly and its professional context would certainly applaud the achievement of this administration in the area of security given the constraints involved. Very few (if any) of the social media “pundits” know that the combined strength of the NPF and the Nigerian is below 800,000 for the entire 190 million Nigerians much less, debate the success of the armed forces in this context. Given that, the police and the Army need to be magical to produce the speedy and conclusive result these pundits propagate in the virtual world.

Debating the complex Nigerian security problem doesn’t end with the simple ability to write flowery grammar nor does it end with having a having a “video game” generated professionalism. It’s a real problem that requires a real solution and we should leave that for the true professionals to handle. Stop being fooled by unpatriotic elements who have no problem using a national tragedy to promote their diabolical ambitions.

  • Buhari orders overhaul of Zamfara’s police

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered massive transfer of police personnel in Zamfara state as part of deliberate measures to address cases of armed banditry in the state.

The President disclosed this when a delegation of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria visited him at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

President Buhari was reacting to the burning issue of violent conflicts in some parts of country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zamfara state has been battling cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent months.

Armed bandits and cattle thieves have been terrorizing villages in the state in the past months with many innocent citizens killed and villages burnt or destroyed.

NAN reports that worried by persistent killings, Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara State had on June 15 said he had dropped his responsibility as Chief Security Officer of the state as he had no control over security machinery in the state.

Yari said that his decision was occasioned by the seeming helplessness of his administration and the people to check the persistent killings in the state.

He, therefore, frowned at the prevailing situation in the state where as the chief security officer of the state he could not take decisions on strategies for protecting the state and its people, and had it implemented.

However, President Buhari told the Shari’ah delegation that he was putting in his best to address all security challenges in Zamfara and other parts of the country.

He said that following his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Police in Zamfara State, he ordered a massive transfer of officers and men who had stayed three years and above in the troubled State.

The President also revealed that he had received a “stiff bill” from the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for the restoration of the dilapidated infrastructure and facilities of the Federal Government-owned radio stations in all states of the federation.

He pledged that something would be done about the situation.

Spokesman of the delegation and the Vice-President of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Sheikh Hadiyyatullahi Abdulrashid, had commended President Buhari for his efforts toward uplifting the quality of life of all Nigerians.

He, however, appealed to the President to address the pathetic state of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna

  • No one can accuse me of stealing, says Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that nobody can accuse him of stealing.

Buhari, who was  receiving a delegation of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria at the State House, Abuja, said: “You cannot accuse me of stealing.”

He said he had no regrets being a person of honesty and integrity.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said: “I am satisfied with what I am. I am happy I have kept myself and people close to me from benefiting from government’s contracts.”

The President added that he did not award contracts and did not care about who got them so long as they did a good job at a cost that is justifiable to the nation.

He said: “I have been in many places, including Ministry of Petroleum. I would have gone to jail, if I had taken an oil well. For integrity and honesty, I have no regrets. By this, I have contributed to my social safety. I won’t go to jail.”

The President, who said he had been accused of many things, said his critics cannot accuse him of stealing.

He went on: “I have appointed ministers and they are in charge. I appeal to their integrity. When they come here (Federal Executive Council) Chambers, we ensure they follow the due process. If I owned an oil well, I would have gone to jail.”

Buhari also responded to a number of issues raised by the delegation, including complaints that Muslims had been marginalised in appointments to government institutions such as the military and the civil service.

The President said this illustrated how difficult his job is because he faced the same criticism from adherents of other faiths.

“I am in a difficult situation,” he admitted.

On the burning issue of violent conflicts in some parts of country, Buhari said he was putting in his best to curtail them.

He said that following his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Police in Zamfara State, he ordered a massive transfer of officers and men who had stayed three years and above in the troubled state.

The President appealed to the religious leaders to instruct their followers on the importance of possessing their own voters’ cards, which he described as a “national entitlement”.

He also urged them to preach justice to all, which is an instituted pillar of Islam.

Buhari, who revealed that he had received a “stiff bill” from the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for the restoration of the dilapidated infrastructure and facilities of Federal Government-owned radio stations in all states of the federation, promised that something would be done.

Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria Vice-President Sheikh Hadiyyatullahi Abdulrashid, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, hailed Buhari for accomplishing much of what he promised before his election.

He likened him to the captain of a capsizing ship and the messiah needed by the country.

Sheikh Abdulrashid also spoke about the alleged marginalisation of Muslims, violent conflicts between farmers and herders, the problems of drug abuse among youths, the fate of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna and other issues.

  • Urhobo Progress Union to Buhari: restructure Nigeria

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) yesterday tabled a number of demands before President Muhamamdu Buhari, including the restructuring of the country.

They also pleaded for a ministerial slot, boundary adjustment and the stoppage of the sale of their land by military officers.

Buhari said the military officers selling the land donated to the military in Delta State would be dealt with.

The UPU members and Urhobo members in the All Progressives Congress (APC) were led to the Presidential Villa by Dr. Laiyeguen, Ogbon-Ogoni Oghoro 1, the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom.

The president pleaded with the Urhobo nation to protect oil installations in their communities the way they protected it during the 16 years administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The calls for restructuring, he said, may not have caught his attention because of the parochial interest with which stakeholders were making the request.

He said some of the views expressed by different interest groups for the restructuring were uncoordinated, stressing that such clamours may not be backed by the constitution.

He also told the group that the request for Urhobo person to be in his cabinet may not be possible as the Constitution has specified that there will be one person from every state of the federation.

The President said: “I have taken note of your representation that the land given to the military is being sold. You are not the first to make this representation, so  by this representation, I am constrained to tell the responsible ministry to check and find out, whoever is responsible in abusing the generosity extended to the military will be brought to book. I assure you of that.

“Firstly, the corporate existence of the country is its resources. We need your cooperation like I said for the 16 years of previous administrations who enjoyed relative peace and a lot of resources, when we came the militants suddenly realize their powers and it affected our production from 2.1 million barrels.

“But I think they have realised and have listened to you, they are prepared to give this administration a chance. I assure you that whatever this country realises through whichever resources whether agriculture or petroleum, we will use it to ensure we improve the standard of living of Nigerian.

“I have noted your representation but like I said, please persuade the so called militants to please give peace a change and stop sabotaging installations because like I said if we pollute the waters it will affect more of your people including those who depend on fishing.  You don’t need money from Central Bank; what you need is secured coastlines that will enable the people earn decent living through fishing.

“So the government and you as representatives of the people have equal duties persuading those under our influence to please restrain themselves and make a lot of sacrifice for the sake of the whole country.”

He went on: “You mentioned something which is topical these days, the cause of restructuring Nigeria. For every group asking for restructuring has got their own agenda and I hope it can be accommodated by the constitution. I assure you that you are not forgotten and I’m pleased you appreciate the appointments by this administration of some citizens of your kingdoms.

“Boundary adjustments you asked for is a constitutional problem as well as the ministerial slot you asked for. If you look at the result of the election that brought this administration in, you will see that this administration has a lot of restraint in the sense that the constitution made a provision that there would be a representation in the executive council of each state. It is not possible to make each tribal group because I suspect they are around 250. 250 ministers will be too cumbersome to handle, so it is limited to the constitution. So, the only thing we can do is to pick one person per state and that is one thing we have to accept.”

The Urhobo nation, in their address read by the President General of UPU, Olorogun Moses Taiga, said:

“Grinding poverty is still a fact of life in nearly all our communities. Our youths are unemployed and frustrated but we rein them in regardless in the hope that tomorrow might be a better day.

“Hunger, despair and disease stalk our lands and our waterways which have been devastated and poisoned by years of oil exploration conducted quite obviously outside global best practices.

“But we keep the peace because we believe tomorrow will be a better day. In the past few years, our children have started asking us when tomorrow will come.”

He said the Sapele Port, which was once a bustling economic hub in the old Midwestern region, has become camotose.

“It is presently used as a naval facility with only a small part of it serving the navy’s needs. We therefore request the Federal Government to reactivate and make the port functional. This will help to decongest the Lagos ports and boost the economy of Delta and neighboring states,” he said

On boundary crisis between Delta and Edo states, the Urhobo nation sought for the intervention of the President in resolving the issue as it relates to boundary adjustment.

The UPU appealed to the president to adequately fund the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurum, Delta as a special institution.

“We note that the Delta Steel Company, Aladja has been privatised. However, it is regrettable that the new owners have failed to revitalise it.”

Speaking with State House correspondents after the visit on whether the demands were pre-conditions for the Urhobo nation to vote for Buhari in 2019, Taiga said : “Well, they are not pre-condition, they are requests. We are making requests that these are the needs of the Urhobo nation. So, once anybody willing to do those things as we said in our speech, we are partners in progress and we will work with him to ensure continuity of the nation.”

  • Buhari, Akufo-Addo, Osinbajo, others for NBA conference

President Muhammadu Buhari, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Ado, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar ( rtd) are among dignitaries expected at the 2018 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA).

It will hold from August 26 to 30 at the International Conference Center, Abuja, with the theme: Transition, Transformation and Sustainable Institutions.

A statement by NBA Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) chairman Mr. George Etomi said Akufo-Addo will give the keynote address, while there will be a “conversation with President Buhari.”

“The conference theme has been carefully chosen to reflect the global, socio-economic, technological and political shifts that underpin current contextual realities in governance, business and politics.

“Debates around the challenges to the assumed global order or the developmental difficulties in Africa reinforce the need for sustainable institutions to manage transitions and transformations.

“The theme similarly speaks to the role various stakeholders can play in ensuring peaceful and successful transitions, drawing references from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. The Conference will therefore focus on how transitions are handled in critical spheres of human endeavours and the strength of institutions to withstand the shocks that may be incidental to change.”

He said the conference will have five sub-themes, including Political Transition and Governance; Rule of law and security, sustainable economic development, technological disruptions and diversity and inclusion, with 35 sessions.

Gen Abubakar, who Etomi said is generally acclaimed to have overseen one of the most peaceful transitions of power from military to civilian authorities, will also speak.

“The conference will also feature high level panel discussions by renowned global and industry leaders in various fields, while we will also have a complement of young minds who will be making robust contributions to nation-building from their perspectives.

“The NBA is Africa’s largest body of lawyers with over 106, 000 members and the Annual General Conference remains a melting pot for intellectual and policy shaping discourse.

“This year is going to be no different as we expect more than 10,000 delegates to converge in the city of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria to chart the course for transformation of law, politics and the economy in Nigeria and Africa.

“For ease of participation at this year’s conference, we have launched our new website which will leverage cutting edge technology and mobile applications, to cater for registration, conference enquiries, hotel and event bookings and details on conference speakers at the click of a button.

“We will also continue to update the website with exciting features such as tourism guides and activities to expect at our Friendship Centres, among other details as we progress.

“Please visit the conference website at www.nbaconference.com to take full advantage of the early bird registration offer which remains open up until 31st July, 2018.

“The NBA is also working in partnership with notable hotels who are offering fantastic concessionary rates that you will do well to take advantage of by making a reservation through the website,” Etomi said.

  • Lagos Assembly hails Buhari for honouring Abiola

THE Lagos State House of Assembly has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

Raising the issue as a matter of urgent public importance, Majority Leader Sanai Agunbiade said it was gratifying that President Buhari recognised the late Abiola as a hero of democracy with an award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) reserved for Presidents bestowed on him.

He said: “President Buhari has crowned the agitations of the Lagos State House of Assembly over the years that the late Chief MKO Abiola should be recognised.

“We are glad with what President Buhari did on June 4. The President did what the presidents that have ruled Nigeria since 1999 failed to do. So, we are glad that our dreams have finally been realised.”

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, supported the issue on behalf of other members, saying  the Assembly had always been canvassing the recognition of the late Abiola and other unsung heroes of democracy.

  • Buhari to punish military officers selling Urhobo lands

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said the military officers selling the lands donated to the military in Delta State would be dealt with.

He made the declaration while receiving the Urhobo Traditional Rulers, Leadership of Urhobo Progress Union (UPUp) and Urhobo members in the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja

Buhari said his government would not forget Urhobo nation in its developmental agenda.

He also pleaded with the Urhobo nation to protect oil installations in their communities the way they protected it during the 16 years administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But he told the group that the request for Urhobo person to be in his cabinet may not be possible as the Constitution has specified that there will be one person from every state of the federation without mentioning a particular community the person should come from.

The Urhobo nation in its address read by the President General of UPU, Olorogun Moses Taiga told the President to ensure the restructuring of the country.

Taiga said the serious hunger and poverty in the country required immediate solution.

The group also demanded that President Buhari should appoint an Urhobo indigene in his cabinet, adding that Urhobo is the biggest ethnic group in Delta State and the fifth biggest ethnic group in the country.
