I didn’t betray Atiku by working for Buhari — Garba Shehu

Former presidential spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, has dismissed allegations of betraying former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by accepting an appointment under President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Speaking ahead of the launch of his memoir titled “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience”, scheduled for public presentation on July 9, Shehu clarified that his decision to join Buhari’s media team was not a betrayal but a product of circumstance.

Shehu, who had served as Atiku’s spokesperson before the 2014 merger that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC), explained that after Atiku and other aspirants lost the APC presidential ticket, their media campaign assets—including his—were consolidated and donated to Buhari’s campaign.

“All the aspirants, including Atiku, Rochas Okorocha, Kwankwaso, and the late Sam Nda-Isaiah, contributed their media assets to the Buhari campaign. I was part of that pool,” he said. “The President had the grace to appoint me as campaign media director. That’s how I came on board.”

Shehu also addressed why he refrained from attacking Atiku during his eight-year tenure under Buhari. He said loyalty and discretion were essential in public office.

“If I had attacked Atiku, how would Buhari trust me? He would assume I could do the same to him one day. I learned from history. Even during the fallout between Abiola and IBB, did you hear the presidential spokesman vilify Abiola?” he said.

The former Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) president stated that his forthcoming book not only documents his experience with the Buhari administration but also serves as a resource for aspiring journalists and public relations professionals.

“The book ‘According to the President—Lessons From a Presidential Spokesman’s Experience’ is not a personal biography but a guidebook written to inspire students who aspire to have a career in journalism and public relations.

“It is also an authoritative account of what President Buhari did with his eight years in office.

“This book tries to build on what Femi Adesina and several others have done, which is to authoritatively document the achievements and some of the historic decisions of the Buhari administration in eight years. It brings President Buhari up close: how did he govern? What did he eat? And the clothes he wears for some occasions?”

He added that the book is analytical, informative, and academic in its approach and comes packed with personal anecdotes and shared experiences of a cross-spectrum of reporters and editors in dealing with the author in his work as presidential spokesman.

He maintained that it was not possible for the 260-page book to explain the significant work, policies, and programmes undertaken by the administration in its eight years. He argued that Buhari brought the nation to a new pinnacle in the efforts to lay the foundation for a self-reliant Nigeria.

This, according to him, includes bringing a culture of personal integrity and setting new benchmarks in transparency with the institution of the Treasury Single Account, Tax Identification Number (TIN), BVN, IPPS, Whistleblower, the usage of NIN, and various other transparency-enhancing schemes.

Buhari’s administration excessive money printing responsible for Naira collapse – Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) has attributed the collapse of the naira to the “excessive printing of money” by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, citing the controversial Ways and Means policy.

Speaking at the Progressives Governors Forum’s meeting and interactive session in Benin City, Edo State, on Saturday, Oshiomhole criticised the CBN’s reliance on the policy, which allows the Federal Government to borrow from the apex bank to cover short-term fiscal deficits.

“We are coming from a country that was almost like Zimbabwe or Idi Amin’s Uganda where he asked the Central Bank governor ‘go and print more money for us to share to the people’. And the governor said, ‘if we print more money, Uganda currency will be like a sheet of paper’,” Oshiomhole said.

“This is what the immediate past CBN governor was doing. In the Senate, we have the record that they printed over ₦31 trillion which they called Ways and Means,” he continued. “You know when the government wants to deceive people they use jargon. They called it Ways and Means but I can tell you what it means: it means a situation in which the government prints banknotes, not based on what we have earned or any resources, just print banknotes to go and share to the people to meet their money illusion.”

Oshiomhole stressed the “excessive printing of banknotes” was the root cause of the naira’s steep depreciation.

“To understand the root cause of the present cost of living and the exchange rate regime, you must trace it and locate it in terms of the excessive amount of banknotes through so-called Ways and Means which the past government created and which this government has eliminated,” he added.

He also highlighted the burden now placed on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to repay loans incurred by the previous government, stating, “Nigeria was borrowing every day the way fish drink water,” and it has now become Tinubu’s responsibility “to pay back those loans in order to guarantee the sovereignty of Nigeria.”

The battle for peace in the northeast has taken a new dimension with men and arms coming in hordes from the Sahel countries around us.

I think we should enlist the genius of military contractors, and let those mercenaries come back and tackle the beasts of death and plunder. The fellows were driven home by the Buhari administration, and their expertise has been missing in the region.

Mercenaries know no mercy. They know stealth and strategy. They evince ruthlessness and result, and they have no respect for the enemy, especially because they are cultural agnostics.

The Supreme Court ruling, which marks the end of a 20-year dispute over the Gwandu throne, has been widely regarded as a decisive resolution to one of Nigeria’s most prolonged traditional leadership cases.

The legal dispute began following the deposition of Major Haruna Jokolo by the Kebbi State government in 2005 and the subsequent appointment of Major-General Bashar as Emir.

Jokolo challenged the legitimacy of the new appointment, leading to a protracted litigation process that only concluded this year.

Major-General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, a retired senior military officer and respected traditional leader, has continued to serve as Emir throughout the legal proceedings.

Buhari hails Tinubu at mid-term, urges Nigerians to be patient with reforms

Former President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for steering the country through tough times.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the reforms of the administration, saying that they are yielding positive results.

The former leader, who handed over to President Tinubu, two years ago, led the pack of statesmen and political leaders who felicitated the President on his second year in office.

Also, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau,  House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, and Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, hailed President Tinubu’s efforts at tackling the economic challenges.

But the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which lamented the insecurity, urged the president to reverse his economic and fiscal policies.

Buhari said in a statement by his spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, that the bold reforms are yielding fruits, urging Nigerians to continue to give support for the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.

Lauding the president for steering the country through tough but necessary reforms, he said the “desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics.”

Buhari added:”Reforms take time to yield results. The task of reducing poverty and inflation, which have hit the poorest families the hardest, is immense and must not be left only for the government. The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can. Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy.

Barau: Nigeria on the path to prosperity

Barau said Nigeria is on the path to prosperity, saying that President Tinubu has laid the foundation for the restoration of the glorious days.

The Deputy Senate President said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, said the National Assembly would  continue to support President Tinubu in implementing his Renewed Hope Agenda and consolidating the gains recorded in the last two years.

Highlighting President Tinubu’s achievements,  Barau said: “The country in the past 24 months under the able leadership of President Tinubu, the visionary leader of our time, has been repositioned. Of course, he inherited a lot of challenges. But he has come up with programmrss and policies to surmount these challenges.

“We’ve seen how he has genuinely dealt with our twin main challenges: security and economy. We know we are not where we want to be, but the journey has started. It’s a work in progress. Mr President is working hard, day in and day out, to surmount the insecurity challenge.

“ Hundreds of terrorists have been neutralised, especially in the North West geopolitical zone. Most areas that have been tagged as no-go areas have been recovered. The instances of incessant kidnapping on the Abuja/Kaduna road have become history.

“In the Southeast, the activities of unknown gunmen terrorising the region have been on the downward slide. Boko Haram was almost completely eradicated until the recent attacks coming from the terrorist group in some parts of Borno State.”

Barau said the establishment of development commissions in the Northwest, Northcentral, Southeast, South west, and Southsouth would accelerate even development.

Barau noted the President has established several tertiary health and educational institutions to increase access to education and health facilities.

Describing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as unprecedented, he said records from the agency showed that over 300,000 students had already benefitted.

Barau said the president’s endorsement for a second term by all APC stakeholders was to give him enough time to complete his laudable policies and programmes.

He added: “I, therefore, call on Nigerians of all persuasions to continue to pray for our leaders and the well-being of our country and to offer their full support to President Tinubu as he resets our dear nation for peace and socio-economic prosperity.”

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has lauded Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State and two-term minister of transportation, as an invaluable asset to his administration, describing him as a “golden fish” whose contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure development will remain enduring.

In a congratulatory message issued on Wednesday marking Amaechi’s 60th birthday, Buhari praised his former cabinet member for his unwavering commitment to transforming Nigeria’s railway sector and bridging longstanding infrastructure gaps across the country.

“Amaechi shared with me the aspiration of strengthening infrastructure,” Buhari said in the statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.

“He played a pivotal role in reviving the railway system from a comatose state, completing long-abandoned projects, and initiating major new ones, many of which reached completion before he left office”, he said.

Buhari highlighted Amaechi’s central role in ushering in what he described as a “new era of railway infrastructure,” crediting him for restoring life to a system that had been “killed and buried for decades.”

Under Amaechi’s stewardship, the railways, once the economic lifeblood of towns and cities, witnessed a resurgence that boosted passenger and freight services, introduced new rolling stock, and enhanced safety.
