Rivers APC to Buhari: halt intimidation of tribunals’ witnesses

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the alleged intimidation of witnesses who testified  before the election petitions tribunals in Abuja.

Rivers APC, through its Chairman, Chief Davies Ikanya, in a statement yesterday in Port Harcourt, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, said the witnesses wanted to assist the tribunal to ensure justice.

APC in Rivers said: “Photos of the APC witnesses at the tribunals in Abuja are being posted on Facebook by a group known as The Youth Coalition For Good Governance. They held a demonstration and tagged our witnesses with all sorts of unprintable names and accused them of being saboteurs.

“Today, these men (witnesses) live in hiding and can no longer do their businesses freely to maintain their families.”

It urged Buhari to institute a probe into the murder of 97 persons during the 2015 polls in Rivers State.

APC said:  “We passionately plead with President Buhari to hasten to make good his promise to Rivers people on May 13, 2015 when he vowed to revisit the issue, saying: ‘We will confront them with facts and figures. We will not forgive and we will not forget those who perpetrated killings and arson in Rivers State during the elections (of March 28 and April 11, 2015).’

“We demand that the Prof. Chidi Odinkalu Commission of Inquiry report be revisited urgently,”

Rivers APC also called on all the security agencies to take necessary preventive measures, to guarantee the safety of the witnesses testifying at the various election petitions tribunals in Abuja.

  • Buhari is not a dictator – Ogbeha

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, Senator Tunde Ogheha, has disagreed with those describing President Muhammadu Buhari as a dictator.

He said the President’s actions since assuming office has been far from being dictatorial.

Speaking with journalists in Lokoja, Kogi State, the two-term former senator, said it was too early to begin to assess the President, urging Nigerians to wait until after two years before doing that.

He said Buhari has barely stayed in office for more than 100 days, adding that it will be too early to start judging his performance.

Ogbeha said, “I think it’s too early to start assessing him, he has four years to go. He has barely done 100 days, how can I assess him? But maybe when he reaches his mid-term after two years, we will be able to know what he has done and what he is capable of doing.”

Buhari expresses full commitment to national security, IDPs’ welfare

President Muhammadu Buhari  yesterday reiterated the full commitment of his administration to the rehabilitation and well-being of all persons who have been displaced or adversely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He was reacting to the erroneous impression by reports that the Nigerian delegation to the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly missed a meeting on help for displaced persons.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president said that the war against terrorism, improved security across Nigeria and additional  measures to give succour to  internally displaced persons have been central to his discussions with other world leaders since his arrival in New York on Thursday night.

The statement reads: “The issues were dominant  in  the president’s  conversations on Friday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the King of Spain, His Majesty Don Felipe VI and former Prime-Minister Gordon Brown who came with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss the actualisation of the safe schools initiative, which is of special interest in parts of Nigeria most vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

“President Buhari is handling his duty as leader of the Nigerian delegation to this year’s General Assembly with the greatest possible diligence and will certainly not tolerate any  tardiness on the part of the delegation in seizing every possible opportunity to advance Nigeria’s interests.

“This notwithstanding, it must be realised that it will be near impossible for any national delegation, no matter its size, to participate in all  the meetings that are simultaneously happening in and around the General Assembly in New York,” it added

The statement also pointed out that the meeting, which Nigeria was reportedly absent, was not one the official events of the United Nations for which President Muhammadu Buhari and his delegation are in New York.

While stressing that the meeting referred to in media reports is commendable, the statement said it was not the only one or the most important of such meetings in New York that are paying attention to the problem of insecurity, migration and violent extremism in the Lake Chad area and the rest of the world.

“Nigeria was represented earlier today  at an important side event devoted to the North-East called by the UN Population Fund, UNFPA on ‘Building Stability and Resilience in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin Countries.’”

President Buhari, the statement said, is fully conscious of his responsibility to Nigeria and will accept nothing short of the best for Nigerians in the meetings taking place in and around the United Nations.

“Anyone trying to create an impression of dereliction of duty, based on the Nigerian delegation’s absence at an unofficial meeting, is only being mischievous and uncharitable,” it stated

  • Buhari lauds Nigeria’s removal from polio-endemic countries’ list

Buhari lauds Nigeria’s removal from polio-endemic countries’ list

President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed the announcement by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria.

Buhari, who was delighted by the announcement which followed the absence of any case of the wild polio virus in Nigeria since July 24, 2014, applauded the concerted efforts of government officials, health workers, volunteer groups, civil societies, religious leaders, traditional rulers and international partners which resulted in the historic achievement.

The president, in a statement yesterday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, urged  continued vigilance to ensure that Nigeria maintains the new status.

He also directed all government ministries, departments and agencies involved in the polio eradication effort to remain proactively engaged and on guard against the re-emergence of the polio virus in Nigeria.

Buhari assured the WHO and the global community that the federal government will ensure that immunisation and surveillance activities continue across Nigeria to keep the country polio-free.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the public-private partnership leading the effort to eradicate polio, called this a ‘historic achievement’ in global health.

As recently as 2012, Nigeria accounted for more than half of all polio cases worldwide. Polio, which can cause lifelong paralysis, has now been stopped nearly everywhere in the world following a 25-year concerted international effort. Polio remains endemic in only two countries – Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, WHO said, “The outstanding commitment and efforts that got Nigeria off the endemic list must continue, to keep Africa polio-free. We must now support the efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan so they soon join the polio-free world.”

Also, Dr Ado Muhammad, Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said, “We Nigerians are proud today. With local innovation and national persistence, we have beaten polio. We know our vigilance and efforts must continue in order to keep Nigeria polio-free.”

Pharmacists urge Buhari to reconstitute PCN board

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Oyo State branch, has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to reconstitute the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) which was recently dissolved alongside the boards of other parastatals. The chairman of the society, Pharm Ishola Adeyinka, spoke yesterday in Ibadan on the occasion of the 2015 World pharmacist Day with the theme” Pharmacist: Your Partners in Health”.

According to him, practice in the sector  has gotten to a most wretched level which logically cannot afford another vacuum in terms of regulatory control. Adeyinka said disciplinary procedures must be a continuous phenomenon on erring Pharmacists or pharmaceutical companies.

“The absence of PCN governing council in a strategic profession like ours boosts the fake drug syndrome, albeit tragically. The situation in our profession is replicated in some other healthcare professions which are now justifiably issuing ultimatums.

“Other issues like the accreditation of training facilities for pharmacists and support staff in the pharmacy are almost jeopardised. The routine practice in the area of monitoring and control are not in the best of health as it has also been impossible to get council to strategise to boost efforts of the registry of PCN,” he said

Adeyinka implored federal government to halt the drift in the operational efficiency of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria by reconstituting its board now and subsequently invoking the spirit of the law that provides for perpetual succession in the enabling act.

  • Buhari, Saraki, PDP, others mourn victims

Buhari, Saraki, PDP, others mourn victims

President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Yussuff Lasun, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and other eminent Nigerians yesterday expressed sadness over Thursday’s stampede that killed 725 pilgrims, including eight Nigerians, during the hajj.

They called on Saudi authorities to review the safety rules governing activities around places where the hajj rites usually take place.

The Saudi authorities confirmed the death of 725 pilgrims following a stampede that occurred during the ritual, known as “stoning the devil” in a tent city in Mina, about two miles from the holy site in Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.

Two Nigerians – Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf and Professor Tijjani El-Miskin – were first thought to be the only Nigeria victims of the incident, reports yesterday, however, suggested that no fewer than eight Nigerians may have lost their lives.

President Buhari, according to his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, extended condolences to the families of all the pilgrims who lost their lives in the disaster and those who died when a crane collapsed on worshippers in Mecca two weeks ago.

He commiserated with the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on the loss of Hajiya Bilkisu.

The President described Bilikisu as “an exemplary, dedicated, knowledgeable, very credible, highly-respected,  outstanding editor and columnist who, even in death, will remain a glittering role model for journalists, within and outside Nigeria.”

He took “note of the assurance by the Government of Saudi Arabia that Thursday’s catastrophe will be investigated and urges King Salman to ensure a comprehensive and thorough exercise that will identify any flaws in Hajj organisation with a view to avoiding a recurrence of such tragedies during the annual pilgrimage.”

President Buhari prayed that  ”Almighty Allah will comfort the families who lost their beloved ones in the stampede and receive the souls of all those who died in the Holy Land while fulfilling the religious obligation of the Hajj.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said he was pained and saddened that such tragic incident could still occur despite the safety instructions the Saudi Arabian authorities issued to pilgrims.

In a statement issued by his media office, Saraki said: “We are pained. The death of pilgrims who came to worship from different parts of the world is too much for us to bear.

We recorded over 100 deaths and 331 injured others when a crane crashed in Kaaba, Mecca about two weeks ago and now, hundreds of Muslim faithful lost their lives while performing the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual.

“My heart goes out to the families of those that lost their lives in this tragic incident as I pray Almighty Allah to grant Aljannah Fidaus to souls of all those who lost their lives.

“I also pray for quick recovery for those that sustained injuries during the stampede. May Allah give the families of the victims the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Saraki stated.

Saraki charged the Saudi authorities to organise a comprehensive review and update of the safety rules and security arrangements around the holy places where many pilgrims visit at the same time.

He said this was necessary to avoid unnatural disasters like the two that had happened in the last one month.

He also called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria to be more proactive in the training and orientation of intending pilgrims, stressing that safety instructions and guide to pilgrims during hajj, particularly in specific areas, will help forestall future occurrence of such human surge and any other form of crises.

Senator Saraki called on the Saudi authorities to intensify measures to guarantee the overall safety and welfare of pilgrims in future exercises.

“Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and compulsory for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to undertake it. Tragic incidents like this may create fear and panic in the minds of prospective pilgrims,” the statement said.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Wole Oladimeji, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yussuf Lasun, prayed for the repose of the souls of the dead, urging the government of Saudi Arabia to step up its apparatus aimed at ensuring the safety of all pilgrims during the holy exercise.

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who is also performing this year’s hajj, expressed his condolences to President Muhammadu Buhari, Governors Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State and Kashim Shettima  of Borno State, whose pilgrims were victims of  the tragic incident.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr Taiwo Adeoluwa, Governor Amosun expressed concern over the death, which he said could have been avoided.

While urging pilgrims across the world to always observe codes that would engender an incident-free pilgrimage, Amosun called on the Saudi authorities to further improve safety measures in order to prevent recurrence of the unfortunate incident.

“I pray to almighty Allah to comfort the families across the world that lost their loved ones at the Grand Mosque and Mina and grant the deceased Aljannah firdaus. I also wish those that sustained injuries a speedy recovery,” Governor Amosun said.

Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, described Hajia Bilkisu Yusuf, one of the victims, as a role model for northern women. He said her contributions would be greatly missed.

According to Sani, the deceased, who was the first woman Editor from Northern Nigeria, lived an exemplary life of service and sacrifice to humanity. He added: “She was a gift to our country and our generation. She was a woman with a voice like no other and a pen like no other.

“She was a professional with conscience. She was a restless soul in the quest for human dignity, equity and justice. She lived for us and proved a life of synergy of modernity and morality.

“Death hath not just snatched a prolific writer and a dogged fighter, but it has taken out an outstanding pacesetter. She was a flame for women’s rights and a torchbearer for humanitarian service. She was a silent rebel who combated conventions and stereotype and triumphed.

“Death stampeded her out of our sight, but she rises and stands permanently in our memory and our conscience. Bilkisu’s life was a challenge to our life- to live for an ideal and be eternally remembered for it. In the north and beyond, she advanced the frontiers of freedom and inspired a generation of women and youth to defy and to match forward and onward in dignity and grace.”

Sani added: “We triumph over death when our life become a journey of accomplishments in the service of God and humanity. Hajiya Bilkisu is free, free from the burdens and attributes of fears associated with mortality. Bilkisu spoke to our conscience and wrote on the inner layer of our heart. We belong to a nation where the living are wasted and the dead are eulogized; This is among the few climes in the world where you need to die to be noticed, recognized or be appreciated. She was a treasure we underutilized for the betterment of our country. May her gentle soul and that of others consumed in the tragedy rest in peace.”

The Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Asiwaju Khamis Olatunde Badmus, who said he was pained by the tragedy, enjoined the bereaved families and Muslims across the country to take the loss with equanimity.

Speaking through his media aide, Alhaji Dawood Ajetunmobi, Badmus said, “Though the incident is painful, as Muslims, we have to submit to the will of Almighty Allah. Saudi authorities over the years have been making concerted efforts to see that there is hitch-free hajj every year, but it is unfortunate that the stampede happened at the time the hajj rites were almost completed.”

He, however, urged the Saudi authorities to put in place mechanism that will forestall a reoccurrence in the future, adding that adequate compensation should be paid to the bereaved families.

“The Saudi authorities should pay compensation to the family of those who lost their lives in the incident as they did for those who were affected in the Makkah crane incident.

“I commiserate with the President Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, His Eminence Alh Abubakar Sa’ad on the death of the Council’s Assistant Secretary General, Professor Tijjani El-Miskin and the entire Muslims in the South West. I pray to Allah to admit the deceased to Aljanat firdaos and give their families fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

In its condolence message, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed sympathy with the Muslim community worldwide over the tragic stampede.

In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa

  • Shittu: Buhari’s on rescue mission

    Shittu: Buhari’s on rescue mission

Adebayo Shittu, a lawyer, was the Oyo State governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) in 2007 and 2011 elections. In this interview with Jeremiah Oke, he speaks on the Buhari administration and the challenges facing the Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC.

Why did you take your party to court?

The original intention of the parties that came together to form the APC was to be equal partners, particularly when it comes to constituting the executives at both national and state levels. But, that principle was not adhered to. If you look at the party’s caretaker committee at inception, you will see that CPC was not fairly represented. I am particularly concerned about the composition of the executives in Oyo State, which is my primary constituency. We were sidelined by the governor and other party stakeholders. Before the party congress, the governor invited us and urged us to agree with some arrangements of the party and that he would find ways to compensate those of us in CPC and ANPP. He said he doesn’t want elections to hold and that members of the executives would be adopted by consensus. As a result, some members of ANPP had to leave the party for Labour party because they felt marginalised. Myself and numerous of CPC supporters elected to remain in the party because of our commitment to General Buhari. I cannot lead my supporters out of the party because I have been with Buhari for decades. As a member of the merger committee, I participated actively in bringing about the birth of APC. So, no one can chase me out of the party. Now, our agitation is that since most of the ANPP members have left the fold, we in the CPC should be given 40 per cent of the positions at various levels, starting from ward, local government and state level because we are all over the place. But, the governor refused, arguing that some people might still come up to claim that they belong to the defunct ANPP. Rather, he said he would other ways to take care of us. Unfortunately for us, we did not agree on a specific percentage. The governor gave us his words, but he added that nobody should think the APC is his own property. Secondly, he said the chapter would be fair to our members, particularly by rotating of chairmanship and secretary position within the merged parties. Thirdly, he said if any leader of ACN brings any list which is unfair to us, he will correct it by himself. But, here we are today, no fair play. We are now calling on the national working committee to help us in Oyo State.

Did you approach the national executive before you resorted to the court action?

Yes, I did. I went to court after writing the national leadership without reply. I discovered that the governor was untouchable then. But, now that the party is reviewing and settling issues in-house, I believe so much in the leadership, especially President Buhari, Senator Bola Tinubu, as well as the National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun. I am sure they are working on our issues here in Oyo State too.

Would this not affect the party in subsequent elections?

The good thing is that we have Muhammadu Buhari as the President of this great country. It is the Buhari factor that binds everybody together. This is to the extent that even none APC members are backing the party for that reason. After the 2015 election, many of the opposition parties are now moving to join the change we are clamouring for and some of them have pledged their support for us. I believe that the Buhari magic will continue to work for us and nothing can affect the unity of our party. I am confident that with his anti corruption mantra, his antecedents and the confidence that Nigerians now repose in him, he will succeed.

Do you share the view of those who call President Buhari baba go slow?

This is slow and steady government. That should capture President Buhari’s style of government. To start with, he has not disappointed Nigerians. They expected a thorough-bred politician who will take his time to plan very well with a view to attending to the challenges of governance. The first challenge if you agree with me is the issue of insurgency in the Northeast. Undoubtedly, he has given a lot of encouragement to the military at the war front and we are beginning to see the result. For instance, you can see that the insurgents are resorting to guerrilla tactics. Also, with the new service chiefs, Buhari will succeed in crushing Boko Haram soon. Secondly, in his anti-corruption struggle, honestly Nigerians are pleased with him. For the first time, we have a President who is saying anybody who steals will face the music even if he is from his party. Nigerians are happy about this. The EFCC had been in hibernation because they had no support of the previous government, but now they are active.

Thirdly, with his visit to the United States of America and some European countries. Certainly, we are optimistic that our economy will begin to pick up again. On our debtors, we have had many promises from international communities that they will return those monies in their respective country. Foreign investors have also emphatically promised to come and invest in our economy to help address the issue of unemployment. Buhari is also trying to curb wastages in the system.  At 73, Buhari has no new house to build, he has no new wife to marry and he is not interested in amassing wealth; all he is concerned about is to transform the lives of Nigerians positively.

Are you saying American support is not for selfish interest as some Nigerians insist?

Those who are saying that are enemies of Nigeria and they are saying it for their selfish interest. Anytime they are on holidays, they will like to go to America, if they can get a visa. We refuse to appreciate that America is one of the major countries of the world. For instance, our democracy is modeled after that of America. We also try to make our children attend American schools. Many foreign investors are also coming into Nigeria from America. In terms of agriculture and sophisticated technological equipment, we need them. They have willingly agreed to come to our rescue and there is no reason for us to doubt them. I don’t think it lies in our mouth to criticise America. Besides, anybody who has a better alternative from America should step forward and approach Mr. President. But, if not, let us support him in his quest to move Nigeria forward.

With the power struggle among your members in the National Assembly, do you think Buhari will get the needed support from them?

Let me start with the statement of Mr. President that he was ready to work with anybody who emerged as the leadership of the two chambers. God guided him to come out with such resolution. That does not translate to the fact that he did not support the party decision, but he knew that both camps were loyal to him. But, you will see more collaboration between the Federal Government and the National Assembly for betterment of Nigeria soon.

You’ve contested for governorship twice, are you still interested in governing Oyo State?

By the grace of God, I will be governor one day. I believe it will be sooner than later. President Buhari tried it and succeeded only in his fourth attempt. I am sure if I try it for the third time, I will make it. If you look at my antecedent, you will agree that I have what it takes to rule the state. I was a member of the state House of Assembly between 1979 and 1983 and I was an active member of the assembly. With all sense of humility, I am proud to say that I was one of the colleagues of Governor Ajimobi’s father in the assembly in 1979. He was a respected father to me. I received all the encouragement from him. In 1983, I became a commissioner. I was commissioner for home affairs tourism and culture and if you ask people who know me then, they will tell you that I was a formidable member of the state executive. My governor them was Omololu Olunloyo and he can testify to the fact that I was the eyes and ears of his government. Again, I recall that all the commissioners who were my colleagues referred people to me for employment and I did my best. Towards the tail-end of Ladoja’s regime, I was appointed as the Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice and when he was unlawfully removed from office, I played an active role to ensure that justice was done. So, I have more than enough experience to rule the state. I am looking up to 2019, which I believe to be my year of divine transformation. I will run and become the governor of this great state. My prayer all the time is to become the governor and care for the needy. If truly God likes the poor masses of this state, he will make me governor because I really want to help my people.

  • IPMAN praises Buhari on fuel supply

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN), Kogi State chapter, has commended the Federal Government and President Mohammadu Buhari for ensuring availability of petroleum products across the country.

The Chairman of IPMAN,  Joel Olufemi who made the commendation while speaking  with newsmen in Lokoja yesterday, said the long queues that used to be the order of the day in petroleum stations across the country have become a thing of the past.

He explained that the federal government has ensured that petroleum products is made available in abundance, noting that it has made easier for motorists to buy without stress.

He said during the holidays, including the October 1st Independent Day anniversary, there would be enough fuel for motorists travelling to different parts of the country.

He refuted allegations  that the officers of Weight and Measurement Department, Ministry of Trade and Commerce, are in the habit of collecting bribe from members of the association.

He described such allegation as baseless and a figment of the imagination of those making it.

He said that it is only the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) that has the mandate to visit filling stations, regulate price and ensure correct measurement of fuel discharged to motorists at the official pump price of N87.00 per litre.
