  • APC backs Buhari over appointments

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed has debunked reports that some party leaders were not happy over the appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari .

Mohammed, who spoke on a programe-Sunrise Daily monitored on channels Television yesterday insisted that the party is happy about the appointment and stressed that “all the APC members  are behind the President on the issue of this appointment”.

He said it is too early to judge the administration of President Buhari based on about 40 out of 1,000 appointments made so far. According to him, the President will make the right decisions on appointments and he will be gender-friendly.

The APC spokesman disagreed with the statement credited to Chief John Odigie-Oyegun that APC will be more involved in other appointments. He said: “I read the full statement of the National Chairman of my party, and what he said was that these are personal staff. It’s too early to make a judgment, you do not take part to be the whole. Future appointments will be different but these are personal staff.”

Talking about personal staff, Muhammed said: “I have been a Chief of Staff, and as the Chief of Staff, I was the first person the Governor saw in the morning and the last he saw at night almost on daily basis. As the Chief of Staff, I was the link between the Governor’s personal and public life.

“You can’t choose anybody from any party for that kind of job. There must be a relationship between you and your principal which must be personal,” he said.

The APC image maker said that the calculation and permutation by Nigerians on who the President will appoint is wrong.” There should be no fixation on any particular office going to any particular part of the country. The fact that it went to a particular part of the country in the previous administration does not mean it will go there in this present dispensation.

“What we should focus on is the assurance from the government that in the fullness of time, no part of this country will feel marginalised by the kind of appointments that would be made.”

Speaking on the role of social media in influencing the APC in making decisions on appointments, Mohammed said as much as we are going to be a responsive government, we won’t be stampeded by any opinion to take a decision which clearly does not fit into our own vision.

Gender Rights activist, Mary Ikoku said it was too early to say that the appointments made so far is a reflection of gender imbalance. She said since Buhari said he is a born again democrat, he cannot shut out women that constitute more than 50 per cent of the population in appointing his team. Nigerians should allow him to make all his appointments rather than distract him, she pleaded.

  • Buhari’s busy 100 Days

SIR: While 100 days is infinitesimal in the life of a four-year administration, yet it beats the imagination of many patriotic Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari has, within the period under review, been able to rein in the Boko Haram terrorists. In 100 days also, the scarcity of petroleum has literally disappeared across the nation, while electricity supply has spiked.

President Buhari’s shuttle diplomacy to some key nations like Chad, Benin Republic, Cameroon, Niger Republic, all of them most often referred to as Lake Chad Basin has gone a long way to bolster the efforts of the new administration in the war against Boko Haram. There is no doubt that following from these travels, the international community has begun to review their perception of Nigeria, especially regarding the war President Buhari is waging against corruption.

Obviously, Buhari’s commitment and dedication to ensure that Nigeria returns to the path of moral rectitude and restoration is unshakable, and we desire it as a nation. Therefore, in taking stock of his activities over the last 100 days, we must take into consideration the numerous efforts he has made to turn things around.

In all facets of our national life, things are beginning to straighten up in a way that government officials who used to do things with reckless abandon now look before they leap. If the amount of care being invested these days in carrying out the affairs of government had been the practice over the years, perhaps the country would have reached the much desired El Dorado.

With Buhari’s ability to mobilise the Lake Chad Basin countries to join in the onslaught against Boko Haram, there is little doubt that the President’s target of routing the Boko Haram terrorists from Nigeria’s North-East in three months’ time will be met. Already, available information indicates that the terrorists are in disarray and unable to regroup to carry out their mindless killings.

In the area of oil supply (downstream sector)even the most ardent cynics will agree that Nigeria is now witnessing sufficiency in fuel supply across the country, as the industry players are now in tune with global best practices, again on account of President Buhari’s insistence on integrity and due process. This upsurge in the oil sector is also the case in most sectors of the economy that have started to deliver optimally since President Buhari came on board.

In all sectors of economy, there are noticeable improvements. In the power sector, it has moved up to 4,810 mega watts from paltry 2000 mega watts on May 29th, 2015. These successes can be attributed to Mr. President’s commitment to service delivery to Nigerians, and his zero tolerance for corruption. Again, with his assumption of power, there has been a noticeable attitudinal change among the workers and other stakeholders in the industry. With 4,810 mw this is the highest peak ever in Nigeria history.

In the oil industry, there is constant and regular supply of petroleum products across the country and it is unimaginable the positive effects of these two factors in the growth and sustenance of the nation’s economy.

Therefore, if President Buhari can attain these heights in 100 days, there is no doubt that in the months and years ahead, there would be a quantum leap in the growth of the nation’s economy.

Lastly, it must be appreciated that the journey of one thousand miles begins with a step and all indices point to the fact that he has indeed put the right step forward.

  • Buhari, three months after

SIR: When a highly respected person suggested to me to join the Buhari Support Group, I declined to avoid handcuffs. The Yoruba say once a person eats dòdò(fried plantain), he or she can no longer s’òdodo (tell the truth); it’s a play on words; so cute. The former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan fed Drs. Reuben Abati and Doyin Okupe with dòdò; the same way the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua fed Prof. Dora Akunyili (now late) with dòdò, by appointing her as Communications and Information Minister, to defend indefensible governmental policies and actions. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fed Prof. Maurice Iwu with plenty of dòdò, and he perpetrated stunning electoral wùrùwúrú (fraud) for the party.

A virtual or actual member of the Buhari Support Group (BSG) spoke on Radio Kwara, Ilorin, recently. He said the President Muhammadu Buhari is justified in giving all the key positions to the Northwest, which is Buhari’s zone, because what matters is honest and competent persons. He said southern Nigeria has discredited itself with the corruption allegations leveled against former Governors Raji Fashola and Rotimi Amaechi. Abati will shudder to see that he was using the same type of logic to defend Jonathan. Because Fashola and Amaechi are suspected of corruption, everybody in southern Nigeria is corrupt; implying incorruptible persons can be found only in northern Nigeria, with particular reference to Buhari’s Northwest.

Buhari has demonstrated that he is prone to imbalance, not just in his appointments, but also in the way he described jihad wars as a “great civilisation” in his inaugural speech; and in spite of what he called “empty treasury”, he sold dollars cheaply to pilgrimage-makers without even attending to the instability in fuel price at that point. Buhari has also not demonstrated balance in his lip service to dialogue with the Boko Haram rebels. They are rebelling, let’s give them a voice. Why are Nigerian rulers running away from listening to the grudges of the rebels? They are saying Nigeria is violating Islamic order as they understand it. Allow them to speak if you are sure of your own positions and actions.

Every time the rebels call for dialogue, even when they wanted Mama Sarah Jubril to midwife the connection, they were shunned. What is fishy? And how can it now be said that all those who said Buhari was not the expected Messiah were wrong? Nigerians were yearning for change. They were tired of bloodshed and mass abject poverty. They were tired of political instability. What steps is Buhari taking to stop bloodshed and stabilise Nigeria politico-economically? None. His war with Boko Haram is futile, and he will keep pouring Nigeria’s human and material resources into it.

After three months in office, Buhari has nothing concrete and definite to show. Be patient, be patient – the butterfly is flying away into the jungle.

Buhari swears- in SGF, NSA, media aide

We won’t fail Nigeria – SGF

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday sworn-in the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir David Lawal, National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

Adesina was appointed on May 31, while Monguno got the President’s nod on July 13.

Lawal was named the SGF on August 27.

At a brief ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Lawal, who spoke on behalf of others, promised that they will not let the country down.

He said: “We want to thank God for granting President the vision, wisdom, kindness and boldness to consider us worthy for positions of responsibilities.

“We did not have to pass any examination to get appointed into these positions, not because of our tribes, or our faiths, or our political groups that we were considered worthy for these positions.

“If it is such, I am sure none of us would have been considered worthy of these appointments. We appreciate the President and we appreciate God that he has blessed us with these privileged appointments.

“It is a privilege to serve Nigerians in these capacities at this point in time. Nigeria is at the threshold of achieving greatness and it is our honour and privilege to be senior members of the team that will propel the country to this greatness.

“We have in you and the vice president leaders that lead by examples, leaders that are focused, whose goal is to build a Nigeria where there is liberty, security, economic prosperity and the rule of law.

“We are grateful that we are part of the team to deliver this goal. Accept our assurances that by the grace of God, we will not fail you, we will not fail our country. Also, we will not fail ourselves, our families and our friends. By the grace of God, we will not fail you either. We will strive at all times to serve our country and to serve you with excellence, hardwork and integrity.”

Buhari hails D’Tigers’ victory at FIBA championship

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday congratulated the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, on the team victory over Angola in Sunday’s final of the FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, joined other sports loving Nigerians in applauding D’Tigers’ exhilarating 74-65 victory over the Angolans, which also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the men’s basketball event at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The President commended the players for displaying exemplary strength, courage, determination, patriotism, great skills and creativity to dethrone Angola, the perennial African basketball champions.

He urged members of the team and their handlers to work very hard to surpass their extraordinary heroics in Tunisia before a global audience at next year’s Olympic Games and bring even greater glory to Nigeria.

The President assured the team, its managers and the Nigerian Basketball Federation that his administration will give them and Nigeria’s other representatives at the next Olympic Games, the fullest possible support to ensure that they are well prepared to excel against the champions of other countries and regions in Rio De Janeiro.

  • Buhari can’t ignore corrupt practices under Jonathan

Buhari can’t ignore corrupt practices under Jonathan

The Presidency last night hinted why the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari won’t turn a blind eye on the corrupt practices carried out under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The brazen theft of public assets and an almost empty treasury nearly stalled the new administration.

The Presidency asked the Association of Ex-Jonathan ministers, to do  self-reflection on the sort of government they handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari.

By doing this, the Presidency said they should be able to determine for themselves if it would have been right for any incoming government to ignore the brazen theft of public assets, which is perhaps the first of its kind ever witnessed in Nigeria.

A statement by Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the the President on Media and Publicity, said the earlier statements made that there was no witch hunt or malice against anyone in the pursuit of the county’s stolen assets still stand.

According to him, the ongoing war against corruption knows no friend nor foe.

He said: “There is no intention to deny anyone of their good name where they are entitled to it and that President Buhari reserves the highest regards for the country’s former leaders,  including Dr Jonathan Goodluck who he continues to praise to the high heavens for the way and manner in which he accepted defeat in the last election.

“That singular action remains a feat that has earned the former president and Nigeria befitting commendations all over the world, the latest coming from Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations who visited a week ago.”

But he pointed out that the issue of fighting corruption by Buhari is non negotiable.

He said: “It is sine qua non to the overall reconstruction of the economy and social systems  which suffered destruction and severe denigration under the last administration.

“President Buhari will not be deterred or blackmailed into retreat and surrender. No one in the PDP can accuse President Buhari of undermining the economy when all they handed over to him, at best, was  a tottering economy hobbled by corruption and the absence of due process.

“Things have become worsened by the continuing fall of oil prices, which is expected to fall even further with the imminent full return of Iran to the market. All he has been doing while around is to put things together, organising to defeat Boko Haram, paying outstanding salaries, cleaning up the mess left behind, improving security and restoring our relationships with neighbours and the world.”

Wondering what the former ministers are afraid of, he queried if they have become a new trade union overnight.

He said: “Let this collection of ex-VIPs allow the President the peace he needs to handle the reconstruction of the economy and the nation in a manner that most serves Nigeria’s best interests.

“President Buhari does not need these types of distraction presented by the so-called association of former ministers.”

    Buhari consoles Adefuye’s family

    •Says ex-envoy was a patriot

President Muhammadu Buhari has described the late Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, as a patriot whose contributions to the interest of Nigeria were considerable.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said he was shocked by the death of the diplomat.

Buhari, who spoke on telephone on Saturday with the wife of the late envoy, who is still in the United States, recalled that the late Ambassador Adefuye had contributed immensely to making his official engagement in the United States of America fruitful and successful.

He noted that Mr. Adefuye was in attendance at all his engagements during the July official visit to the U.S.

President Buhari maintained that he was proud to encounter such an ardently patriotic diplomat, who put higher national interest above partisan loyalty.

He called on Nigerian leaders to emulate his fine virtues.

He prayed to God to grant the deceased eternal rest in peace, and give his family the fortitude to bear the great and irreparable loss of a noted public officer.

  • Buhari and the search for credible ministers

Buhari and the search for credible ministers

In this piece, Lagos lawyer Wahab Shittu urges President Muhammadu Buhari to set up a cabinet that will assist him in the implementation of his manifesto.

Under normal circumstances, no one would have expected the search for credible cabinet ministers by the Buhari administration to have generated this level of controversy in our country, but then these are unusual times.

Opinions of course vary on the seeming delay in constituting the cabinet by the Buhari administration but I prefer not to join issues with either side of the divide but would rather prefer to focus my searchlight on factors that should guide the President in constituting a cabinet of credible ministers that would deliver on good governance. I am convinced in taking the debate on this direction given the fact that the President had assured that the cabinet would be constituted in September this year and this in my view is just around the corner, I would therefore prefer to give the President the benefit of the doubt and sue for greater understanding on the part of the populace.

The President came into office with a clear agenda on anti-corruption, security, economy and infrastructure. Clearly, only those who could deliver on these agenda need be considered. Therefore, one fundamental factor that cannot be compromised in the constitution of the cabinet is the issue of competence, character and capacity. One is convinced that persons who are willing to key into the change agenda of the administration are required to drive the process.

Secondly, it is important to enlist the services of persons with impeccable track records and antecedents. These include persons with credibility who are not lacking in integrity, honesty and ethical dealings in all their private and official transactions. It is clear that persons in this category cannot be found on the platform of political parties alone, the belief being that such credible people are scattered across political parties, professional groupings, private organisations and in all strata of the Nigerian society including outside the shores of Nigeria. The search for these elements must therefore cover the entire field believing that the Nigerian project is a collective enterprise requiring the services of the best hands wherever such talents may be found. It is this realization that can deliver on the quality outcomes required by the change agenda.

The other issue that should be noted is that these talents abound in all the geo-political zones of the country and no particular geo-political zone has a monopoly of these human resources. Consequently, the searchlight to discover these best hands must be extensive, balanced and reflect the type of federal character that would give every entity within the Nigerian federation a sense of belonging. This will be in furtherance of the President’s commitment at his inauguration when he said ‘I belong to nobody and I belong to everybody’. The President should walk the talk on this fervent commitment of cohesiveness and all-inclusiveness which he made on national television.

I agree with the President’s promise not to appoint persons who are ‘hostages’ and heavily compromised as ministers in that the President cannot afford to be polluted by persons who do not have his record of discipline, integrity and incorruptibility. Luckily, his Vice-President, Professor YemiOsinbajo (SAN) is already of that orientation and pedigree. The few appointments the President had so far made also agree with his credentials of high integrity and ethical standards. The tempo must be sustained throughout the cabinet.  Persons with the right attitude are required since attitude is everything.

It would also seem that the President would require a balanced mix of politicians and technocrats in constituting the cabinet focusing mainly on knowledge, experience, exposure and integrity. This is not the time to give jobs to the ‘boys’ but time to allow appointments to reflect overall national interests.

It is important to note that these are unusual times. Times such as these require the services of great thinkers, people of foresights who can think ahead of time and who are gifted not only with the power of ideas but also the power of action and those with abilities to galvanize the power of action and ideas in to evolving result oriented policies for the transformation of the society. More than ever before, these are men and women required now to take our country to the next level.

Taking the country to the next level require persons who could see beyond the day’s crisis and who are imbued with vision, the indispensable quality of leadership. This vision should transcend national borders with local and international influence.

The country also requires persons who can be trusted to manage the destiny of the country and its vast resources. Persons who though may be talented but are unreliable and untrustworthy are not required in the service of our country at this period and may not be required for a long time to come rather we need persons who place emphasis on values and motivation.

Depending on the circumstances and given the atmosphere of relative insecurity under which we found ourselves presently, we also require persons who have strong political skills to cope with conflicting requirements of multiple constituents. We need to realize that Nigeria is highly diversified country with several tendencies, beliefs and consciousness. Only persons who by their actions and pronouncements are capable of taking advantage of these tendencies in building a cohesive and unified country are required at this critical point in time. We do not need people who are parochial, narrow minded, divisive and shortsighted at the helm of affairs. We need leaders who are statesmen and who are able to rise above primordial sentiments in building a great and prosperous country.

We need persons of great influence and with capacity to priotize responsibilities based on self-discipline as ministers.

We can also not underestimate the need to enlist the services of persons imbued with problem solving skills. There is the urgent need to fix the economy, fix infrastructure, fix insecurity, fix corruption and raise living standards. Only those with problem solving skills and can think outside the box need come on board to address these challenges.

We also need men and women of deep compassion who understand the human element. I mean persons that understand the most appreciable asset is people and know how to develop them including persons who have value for people, commitment to people, integrity with people, standard for people and influence over people. We do not need people who do not value human lives and do not give a damn about basic human needs as ministers.

We need persons who are decent, patriotic and hardworking as ministers. It is important that such ministers are assigned portfolios relevant to their knowledge, expertise and exposure.

We need persons who understand the workings of democracy and are willing to abide by the fundamentals of the democratic tradition. Persons who are democrats are required since they will operate in a democratic setting. Consequently, we need persons who are schooled on the theory of constitutionalism, rule of law, due process, transparency and accountability, rights and freedom of others, separation of powers and good governance.

Finally, we need persons who have a sense of duty and are ready to make sacrifices even at the expense of their personal comfort in making the country great and prosperous.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest and most quotable American Presidents ‘The worthiness of life is deep-rooted in sacrifice to mankind. If one dies in the process, he becomes a martyr’.

We need men and women who could make sacrifice. I mean real sacrifice.

  • Council of Imams back Buhari’s loot recovery

Council of Imams back Buhari’s loot recovery

The Council of Imams and Ulama in Kaduna State, on Sunday said the effort by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in recovering stolen wealth from past corrupt officials, was commendable.

The resolution was passed in Kaduna after the council’s annual conference.

The Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Baban Tuni and the Secretary-General Yusuf Arrigasyyu, presented the resolution.

According to the resolution, the effort of the Federal Government to recover all ill-acquired wealth looted from the nation’s treasury was laudable.

Tuni said: “Therefore, it is compulsory to retrieve the people’s right from corrupt and selfish persons.

“The Council is urging the government to do justice to the culprits according to the provisions of the law.

“The Council also feels delighted and appreciative of the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari in its effort to wipe out insurgency and other terrorists acts from Nigeria.

“The Council equally observes that some progress and successes have been recorded at various levels within few months of this administration.’’

Tuni said further that the council was impressed about the recall of officers and men of the Nigerian Army who were dismissed on grounds of insubordination, treason and various other charges.

The Council, however, reminded Buhari and all other political leaders to fulfil their campaign promises to the electorate.

“We call on all Nigerians to remain steadfast and continuously pray for the sustenance of our country and we pray that Allah help our leaders to be just and truthful.”

  • Buhari has destroyed economy, says PDP

Buhari has destroyed economy, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday wrote off the economy, accusing the Buhari administration of destroying it since assuming office on May 29.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief OlisaMetuh, the party said the “shambolic state” of the economy within the period represented the worst in the nation’s contemporary history.

The situation, the party said, was a fallout of uncertainty created by the government’s inability to chart a clear-cut economic policy, adding that the matter is worsened by abuse of regulations, and flagrant violation of constitutional provisions.

According to the PDP, official reports showed that the last three months under the APC-led government had brought a sudden decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with attendant losses and hardship to the citizens.  The government, it said, embarked on propaganda of imaginary achievements, in addition to attempts to foist harsh economic regime to cover its ineptitude.

The statement reads: “If not for crass incompetence or a possible ulterior motive to subjugate Nigerians for selfish reasons, what else explains the adamant stance of this administration in running a government without the statutory components of a full cabinet and precise fiscal policy direction, even when the negative consequences of this strange totalitarian approach are taking serious toll on the economy and the polity in general?

“Whereas the APC led government is busy with its propaganda of imaginary achievements, official reports from the National Bureau of Statistics show that that the economy is being grounded with Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) plunging with about 2.35%, while job creation has dropped by 69 percent.

“In the last three months under an inept and poorly coordinated APC-led government, our nation’s economy, which before now, held the record as the largest in Africa and one of the fastest growing in the world, suddenly plummeted as officially evidenced in the lull in the capital and money market sectors which have lost billions of naira; spiral rate of inflation, and stagnation in domestic and foreign direct investments, with investors scared away due to the uncertainty arising from lack of economic direction and apparent confusion in the polity.

“This is in addition to the halt in infrastructure development projects in most parts of the country with associated massive job loss, closure of auxiliary small scale businesses, low purchasing power of citizens, among other negatives that have bedevilled the economy since the coming of this government, despite the much APC celebrated promissory notes from the President’s diplomatic shuttles, especially his recent visit to the United States.

“Nigerians would recall that we recently raised alarm on the negative consequences of the recent foreign exchange transaction restrictions, wherein this government is making it impossible for honest Nigerians to engage in free trade and regulate their personal activities as guaranteed by the constitution.

“We also warned about the consequences of foisting a communist economic regime with bans and clampdowns on free trade and the freedom of Nigerians to freely open and operate domiciliary accounts as provided by the Foreign Exchange Monitoring And Miscellaneous Provisions Act, otherwise known as Decree No. 17 of 1995 and wondered whether the nation was not heading back to the era of import duty licenses and regulation of commodity prices.

“Only recently, Fitch Rating, which, under the previous administration, affirmed Nigeria’s long-term foreign and local currency IDRs as well as senior unsecured bond and Short-term foreign currency IDR ratings respectively at ‘BB”s, had now alerted that Nigerian banks and other businesses in the sector would be adversely affected by the economic slowdown occasioned by the incompetence of the President Buhari-led APC government.

“This is more so as the absence of ministers have left the coordination of important government policies in ministries, departments and agencies in tatters, while creating loopholes for overzealous persons claiming closeness to the President to invade the system for inflated concessions, allocations, jobs and other financial sleazes, including misleading the President for approvals outside his limits.

“We invite Nigerians to note that whereas the Presidency has gone ahead to unilaterally deplete the funds inherited in the Excess Crude Account (ECA) and other government savings, as well as reports of engaging in discussions with the World Bank for loans without recourse to appropriate statutory arms of government, no corresponding improvement has been witnessed in the economy. Indeed, we are worried that the damage already done in the last 90 days may linger with us for years to come.

“Nigerians are no longer in doubt that they have been scammed with long list of empty promises which the APC government has no intentions or capacity to fulfil. The free meals for school children, allowances for discharged Corps Members, N5,000 monthly allowance for indigent Nigerians, free houses, bringing the dollar to the same value as the naira and other bogus promises for which they were voted into power, have become streams of mirage.

“Instead, what we continue to witness is the outworn excuse of clearing the so-called Augean Stable, loud propaganda and artful move to appropriate the achievements made by the PDP-led administration; such as the effort in ending polio, the improvement in power supply, the reopening of the refineries, among others which are a dividend from numerous investments by the previous administrations.

“Finally, we state categorically that Nigerians are becoming tired and weary of the diversions and propaganda of creating imaginary achievements, dramatisation of routine appointments, offering mundane excuses for crass incompetence and orchestrating a selective and witch-hunt of anti-corruption crusade”
