  • APC’ll complete takeover of Delta on Saturday, Buhari vows

President Muhammadu Buhari has said Saturday’s election will complete the cycle of the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) take-over of the affairs of Delta state.

This, he said, is going by the achievements of the party in the state during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Buhari made the declaration at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun, Uvwie council area of the state on Monday when he addressed a congregation of the party’s stakeholders and other stakeholders of the state, including traditional rulers.

The President, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also assured the stakeholders the federal government would ensure there is adequate security during next Saturday’s elections to address concerns about rigging and other electoral anomalies.

“What happened last Saturday is a great victory for us but it is only the beginning because the completion of that victory is going to come by the grace of God on Saturday March 9, 2019 when we vote in our own governor, Great Ogboru, who will by the grace of God be a governor from that very day.

“It is very clear to everybody and to the world that Delta State can never be the same again.

“It’s impossible for Delta State to go back after what happened on Saturday. As the APC chairman said, we all watched to see what will happen in Delta state. Delta state was a focus of all of our attention.”

He went on: “Just as the chairman has said, we have seen a Delta state where the PDP was unable to recall a vote of 1.2 million and will knew they wrote the result.

“We wanted to see what way they can be curtailed, but you all proved that ‘you can tell a lie for a thousand years, but one day the truth will catch up’ and the truth caught up with them last Saturday.

“That truth will manifest itself fully this Saturday when we hold the next election. Delta state has proved a very important point that this state is ready for change to the next level.

“The other reason why it is so important for us to ensure that Delta State become an APC state has been pointed out. The social investment programme that we put in place, it is only APC governor that can implement such programmes faithfully.

“We believe that once we are able to have an APC governor such programmes will be implemented.”

Speaking on reasons why the state should not remain in the opposition to the federal government, Prof Osinbajo pointed at the various development projects that had been kicked off for the economic and social development of the oil-rich Niger Delta region, especially Delta state.

“I heard talks about Delta Steel Company (DSC), after so many years, the Itakpe-Aladja railway has been completed 35 years after being on the card. It’s this same President that completed it. PDP has been in power all these many years, why didn’t they complete it? They (PDP) are the ones who created this mess.

“Even the Warri seaport which we are now dredging has been there for years. They didn’t do it. All of these times that PDP has been in power. Sometimes, it surprises me that with the resources that Delta State has had for so many years, where are the fruit of the resources. Look at the Warri Seaport, it could have been seamlessly be done by the state. Here we are, we (APC) are completing the dredging of the channel. Even the East-West raod, this is the first government that has put resources for its completion. We are putting large amount of money into the East-West road. We all will benefit from it.

“Delta state should not be an opposition state. Why should Delta be an opposition state? Why? There is no reason for it at all. For all the periods that Delta State has had high resources, what we need was a change from a progressive party. The time has come. This is the moment, let us seize that moment. You have shown courage, it is only the courageous that wins”, he said.

Meanwhile, speaking earlier, various speakers had urged Presiden Buhari to ensure strict security cover for the state to prevent the rigging of next Saturday’s election by the PDP, saying that the party (PDP) would repeat its alleged rigging pattern during the governorship and state House of Assembly election if there is no proper security to deter such.

The event gathered leaders and stakeholders of the party in the state, including the governorship candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, the leaders of the party in the state, like the Minister of State of Petroleum Resources, Dr Dr Ibe Kachikwu, former governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and others.

  • Buhari and challenges of second term

The presidential election has been won and lost. President Muhammadu Buhari has received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His challenger, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to launch a legal battle. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the poll’s drama, post-election challenges and public expectations about Buhari’s second term.

    Triumph of integrity

It was the triumph of integrity and honour. The poll was a referendum on the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari. The second term, like the first term, was not won on a platter of gold. The successful election underscores the fact that Nigeria is becoming more stable and building critical institutions of democracy.

However, there are two more hurdles for the president and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to cross. There is need for more aggressive and effective mobilisation for the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections. Also, as the presidential battle shifts from the ballot box to the court room, the ruling party cannot afford to sleep on guard.

In his victory speech, President Buhari was conciliatory. The second term, in his view, will enable him consolidate on his achievements in the four critical areas of anti-corruption war, economy, security and job creation. The last manifesto is more important. It is targeted at the youths and the poor. While the elite who apparently had score to settle with the president cast protest votes, he was greatly assisted by the masses’ votes.

The outcome of the election affirmed Nigerians tendency towards two party system. Instructively, President Buhari won in 19 of 36 states. Atiku won in 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Although, constitutionally, Nigeria is a multi-party state, past experience has combined with the present indication that it only has two strong dominant parties. The fringe parties only constitute a big burden to the INEC.

However, the election was not conducted for ideological parties. The APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PD) do not subscribe to any ideology. Yet, it is ideology that gives form, content and predictability to political parties. The restoration of ideological culture will properly demarcate the parties and present wider opportunities for constructive choice by Nigerians.

Election observers have pointed out certain electoral hiccups that threatened to dent the image of the exercise. In a number of states, violence was recorded. Despite President Buhari’s warning, unpatriotic elements still indulged in ballot box snatching. Also, past mistakes were not totally avoided by the umpire.

In many units, polling officers reported late for work. When voters got to the voting units and INEC officials were not on ground, there was anxiety. If there was vote buying, it was not within the vicinity of the polling units. However, the complaint by a presiding officer that he was declaring results under duress in Imo State was worrisome. This may need to be further investigated to prevent the circumstances that led to it in the future.

Less than 30 million voted out of the 84 million Nigerians who were issued with Permanent Voters Card (PVC). That underscored a sort of voter aparthy. Many experts have suggested that public indifference to election may be a function of disenchantment with the government and lack of faith in the opposition. It is expected that, INEC, in its post-election analysis, will release vital demographic statistics on voting age bloc, gender, and zonal responses to the exercise. The information may be helpful to parties while strategising on mobilisation for future polls.

The overview of the voting pattern suggested that the APC still maintained its dominance in its traditional strongholds in the North and Southwest. PDP maintained its hold on the Southeast and Southsouth.

In addition, PDP made an in-road into Oyo and Ondo states, thereby upsetting the poll-confident Southwest. PDP’s victory in Adamawa could be attributed to “the son of the soil factor.” In Taraba State, voters may have carried out partisan instructions of influential Generals and community leaders who have an axe to grind with President Buhari over what they called his slow response to the security challenge. The Abuja result is a product of elite voting. In Benue, the propaganda of Governor Sam Ortom against the APC produced a fatal result, to the detriment of the president. Many indigenes reacted to the security challenge that claimed many lives in the Northcentral region.

The poll results showed that Southeast and Southsouth are the backbone of the PDP. Indisputably, Southeast was motivated to vote for PDP in honour of a ticket that had accommodated its son, Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State.

President Buhari almost turned Southeast into a construction site. He fought the infrastructure battle in the region with vigour. But, there was no correlation between the presidential intervention and Southeast voting pattern.

In Edo, people still voted for PDP in post-Anenih era, meaning that the bond between the party and the state has not been severed by the demise of ‘Mr. Fix It.’

    Challenge of second term:

In this first term, the take off of the administration was abysmally slow. It took the Commander-In-Chief six months to set up his cabinet. At the end of the day, the nominees did not spring surprise. The anxiety should not be repeated in this second term.

Another cabinet of talent is required. While performing ministers can be retained, it is important that square pegs should be in round holes.

A total overhaul of the security apparatus is also critical. This is critical to the success of the war against insurgency. Security agencies should not work at cross purpose. A situation whereby the president will forward the name of nominees to the senate and security agencies will write reports to scatter the appointment is not tidy.

Also, it was alleged that critical opposition figures who assisted the president to get to power were sidelined. The wife of the President, Aishat, cried out that cabals have taken over and drawn a wool in the eyes of the leader. That provoked a sense of alienation in some quarters.

Allegations of nepotism were also rife. Political foes criticised the president for the skewed distribution of government appointments. The bone of contention was that the skewed formula favoured the Northern Region, to the detriment of other zones.

Although the president worked hard to deliver on his promises to the nation, he was handicapped by financial constraints. While fighting corruption, corruption was also fighting back.

In his second term, Buhari should not relax the battle. The past loot must be recovered fully in national interest. The greatest problem confronting Nigeria is the culture of graft, which is now being inherited from generation to generation.

The lip service to job creation should give way to more concerted action. Unless the electricity problem is addressed, unemployment will persist, manufacturing sector cannot be revived and cosmetic measures of token poverty alleviation will not solve the problem.

President Buhari has not been vindictive. As the president of all Nigeria, he should carry along the six zones, which accepted or rejected him at the poll. He should also strive to re-unite the country that has been torn apart by the partisan struggle for the presidency. In post-election period, all the zones should also cooperate with the president. After election, the collective challenge is governance in national interest.

The achievements of the president in the areas of road construction and rail transportation should be sustained. President Buhari should defend the education sector to prevent protracted strikes by tertiary teachers.

President Buhari should learn from the mistake of the first term. He should not be indifferent to the nature, tendency and sentiment of the next Senate President. The two arms of government must work in the atmosphere of cooperation and togetherness. The executive must also moderate itself in utter sensitivity to the existence of a virile and active parliament, where experienced statesmen are serving as legislators.

The president must unite his divided party. Anti-party activity is now the hall mark of the APC. This has been demonstrated by aggrieve governors of Imo, Ondo and Ogun states. As the APC national leader, President Buhari should ensure that there is always a basis for reconciliation. He should initiate and fortify the party’s crisis resolution mechanism. Conflict resolution is an essential feature of politics.

    Need for reform in APC:

The ruling party has not become a model for other parties. It has a strong leadership. The structure is formidable as an election machine. But, it is devoid of clear ideology. The party is not yet supreme. Lack of party supremacy breeds indiscipline. The contradiction within the fold, right from its formative stage, when it came into existence, as an amalgam of incompatible political groups, paved the way for the protracted feud that led to defections from the fold.

A party is an organisation of like-minded individuals and groups united by similarity of ideas, and strengthened by their collective bid for power. The way forward is reforms.

The leaders of APC may have offended one another during the electioneering, particularly during the tension-soaked nominations. They should bury the hatchet, forgive and embrace. Post-election vendetta could be counter-productive. They have unfinished battles ahead, particularly governorship and House of Assembly polls.

The national leadership should focus attention on the five divided chapters; Oyo, Ondo, Imo, Rivers and Zamfara. How will APC handle the division in these crisis-ridden chapters during the governorship and House of Assembly elections?

  • Why it’s taking so long to reposition Nigeria, by Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday night, explained it had taken so long to reposition Nigeria because of alleged 16 years’waste of the former Peoples Democratic Party-led administration.

This was contained in a statement by Suleiman Haruna, director of Information to wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.

The President spoke at a dinner organised by the Youth and Women Campaign Organisation at the Presidential Villa’s Old Banquet Hall in Abuja.

Buhari, who vowed not to betray the confidence of Nigerians, said his victory was a sign that Nigerians were satisfied with his government’s change.

He added that his victory  was an expression of confidence in his promise of its consolidation as idealised by the Next Level campaign.

He decried the abuse Nigeria went through during past governments, and explained why it took so long to reposition the country.

The President promised to use the next four years to conclude what he had started.

He recognised the significant role women and youth played in the campaign and election, promising to engage them more in his second tenure.

Aisha Buhari had assured women and youths that her husband’s second tenure would not forget them, while addressing the gap between the rich and poor.

She hailed the confidence reposed in the President, assuring them that he would  continue to serve the people.

“I wish I can invite 15 million Nigerians that voted for Mr. President to this dinner, but no place can accommodate all. So, let me say thank you and assure you that you made the right choice.”

  • Workers urge enhanced welfare package from Buhari

The organised labour under the aegis of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to further enhance the welfare packages of workers in his second tenure by implementing the new National Minimum Wage as soon as the bill is passed into law.

Already, the workers said the House of Representatives has already passed the bill awaiting its concurrent passage by the Senate.

Speaking at the weekend, its Secretary General, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, said workers are ready to continue to nurture the harmonious working relationship which existed between them and the Presidency during the first tenure.

He added that the renewed mandate given to President Buhari and his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was another trust bestowed on him and the party. He, therefore, expressed hope that they would not disappoint Nigerians.

Lawal commended Buhari for keeping faith with the covenant he entered into with workers not to send them to the over-saturated labour market through needless retrenchment while simultaneously ensuring that salaries and allowances of public service employees were paid as and when due.

“The President did not only keep these promises, but also settled promotion arrears and outstanding salaries owed Federal Government workers by your predecessors.

“We have no doubt whatsoever that those who were inadvertently omitted or were short-paid during the exercise will be settled soonest in order to bring this ugly chapter in the Federal Public Service to a positive end.

“Also, he promised that the Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) would continue to remain a commonwealth and not sold to the greedy few amongst us as being canvassed by some politicians. You have indeed, kept faith to your promise,” Lawal said.

According to the ASCSN scribe, Buhari had on more than two occasions approved bailout funds to the state governments to enable them clear arrears of salaries and allowances owed their employees.

“Since no man is infallible, the president may have to reflect on his performance in the last four years and see if there are areas that need improvement in order to further enhance national cohesion, peace, prosperity, and development,” he said.

Lawal congratulated the president on his re-election, saying his victory has renewed the hope of workers.

“I also wish to state that his re-election is indeed, a manifestation of the undiluted love Nigerians have for him and the manner in which he piloted the affairs of the country in the past four years.

“He has indeed, through his actions, restored hope in the system and Nigerians from all persuasions have indeed through the electoral process said thank you for the modest achievements recorded so far in spite of the odds that confronted your regime when you came on board,” he said.

  • Three days after suspension, Amosun meets Buhari

TWO days after his suspension was announced by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun was at the State House in Abuja yesterday.

He was at the Presidential Villa for private talks with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Amosun, who won the Ogun Central Senatorial District seat for the ruling APC on February 23, was on Friday suspended by the APC for alleged anti-party activities.

He was suspended alongside his Imo State counterpart Rochas Okorocha, who also won the Imo West Senate slot for the ruling party.

Amosun was accused of backing the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade. Okorocha is supporting Action Alliance (AA) governorship candidate Uche Nwosu.

But yesterday’s meeting between the President and Amosun was behind closed door. It was, however, learnt that it may not be unconnected with the latest development, especially the governor’s suspension.

Apart from campaigning for the re-election of President Buhari, Amosun has been expressing his preference for the APM candidate against his party’s flagbearer in the governorship race, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Akinlade, before moving to the APM, was governorship aspirant on the APC platform. He lost the ticket to Abiodun.

Announcing the suspension, APC National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, alleged that the suspended governors constituted themselves as opposition to APC candidates.

The party’s spokesman said the affected chieftains had earlier been warned to withdraw their support for rival parties’ candidates in the rescheduled March 9 governorship election.

  • Stop plot to rig next elections, Ohuhu elders, youths urge Buhari

A group, Ohuhu Youths for Change (OYC) and elders of Ohuhu community have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, foil the plot by some hoodlums sympathetic to the son of a former governor, in collaboration with top INEC officials in Abia State to rig the next House of Assembly and governorship elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A statement by OYC, signed by the President, Akuagaba Ezerendu, said “the people of Ohuhu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have unmasked a plot by the son of a former governor of Abia state in conjunction with a top Abia INEC staff to shortchange the will of its people by manipulating the House of Assembly election in favour of the incumbent PDP member, Hon. Kelechi Onuzurike.”

Ndudim said the plot was hatched and used during the last Presidential/NASS election, a development that made it possible that even though the Ohuhu people voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari and all APC candidates, they discovered that most polling units had no pulling unit result sheets and ward collation result sheets. This gave rise to PMB and the APC candidates being highly shortchanged by INEC officials who shamelessly manipulated the figures to suit the PDP candidates.”

The group said, “Ohuhu people are using this medium to call on the INEC chairman to warn its staff against a repeat of this sinister plot as it will be greatly resisted by its people during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.”

OYC also called on security agencies to deploy tight security in all its five wards’ collation centres as they would not tolerate any false security breach guise to make INEC collate its results outside the constituency’s ward collation centres.

  • Leah Sharibu’s mother congratulates Buhari, seeks her freedom

Mrs. Rebecca Sharibu, mother of Leah the only Christian Dapchi Girl still in the hands of Boko Haram has congratulated President Mohammadu Buhari on his re-election by Nigerians during the February 23 polls.

Mrs. Sharibu, who spoke exclusively with our correspondent on phone from Dapchi, also called on the President Buhari not to forget her daughter as he celebrates his victory.

She also appealed to Boko Haram insurgents to release her unconditionally, reminding Buhari of his promise to secure her rescue.

Mrs. Sharibu said: “I am grateful to all Nigeria who participated in the election. We are also grateful that the election was peaceful. From the beginning, people felt that there will be problem but it did not happen.

“We are also happy that the President won the election. On behalf of myself and my family, we congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and pray for God to give him the desired wisdom to rule the country.

“I want to remind the President that, as he celebrates his victory, he should not forget that Leah is still in the hands of Boko Haram.

“As for me, my heart is heavy because I have not seen my daughter for more than one year now.

“I am calling on the President to fulfill his promise of freeing my daughter from the hands of Boko Haram. My cry is still the same, today and tomorrow until I see my daughter.

“As for Boko Haram, that are still holding my daughter, I am still pleading with them to have mercy on my daughter and other captives and release them unconditionally.

“Boko Haram should please know that we have been subjected to psychological torture and trauma since my daughter was taking away.

“Please have mercy on my daughter,” she said as she broke into tears.

Leah, along with other over 100 girls, was whisked away from their hostel at Government Girls Science Technical College Dapchi by Boko Haram on the 16th Febuary, 2018.

While her mates were released a month later and other died, Leah was however held back by the insurgents on the allegations that she refused to denounce her Christian fate.

Though the Federal Government has consistently promised to rescue the girl, it is over a year she has remained with the insurgents.

  • Religious leader congratulates Buhari

The Supreme Head of the Cherubim & Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr Prophet Solomon Adegboyega Alao has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election at the just concluded polls.

He also advised the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to concede defeat in the interest of peace and unity of the country.

He said, “Though challenging the result at the court falls within his democratic rights but he should consider not overheating the polity at this crucial period .”

The clergyman in a statement in Lagos urged the President to remember his campaign promises to develop all sections of the country and should not base political patronage and development on numbers of votes garnered from the states.

He also advised him not to forget issues of national importance he discussed with him when he led the church leaders to pay him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja in January this year.

He urged the president not to relent in his anti-graft war, noting that his integrity and passion to fight corruption must  have endeared him to millions of Nigerians who voted for him.

Dr Alao also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to look critically into some lapses identified in the last election and correct them before the Match 9, governorship elections.

  • Second term: Be fair, firm NSCIA tells Buhari

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) yesterday tasked President Muhammdu Buhari to continue to be fair and firm in leading Nigeria to where it deserves.

It also said the victory of the President at the February 23 polls was a reward for his goodness by the overwhelming majority of citizens.

It described Buhari as a  refreshing source of inspiration to many people all over the world as a symbol of unimpeachable character, transparent honesty, un-impregnable integrity and unassailable righteousness.

The NSCIA, in a statement by the Chairman of its Media Committee, Alhaji Femi Abbas, asked Buhari to “be wary of hypocritical do-gooders.”

His words: “In appreciation of the Almighty Allah for His boundless favours on Nigeria through Your Excellency and acknowledgement of His honour in making your re-election a success, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar congratulates you on your electoral victory and wishes you another successful tenure as President of our beloved country.

“As Your Excellency is aware, you are a pride not only to us as an Ummah but also the entire black race by virtue of your unique personality and immense qualities which have endeared you to millions of minds, including those of us in the Council and our affiliate bodies. It is a sign of walaayah (friendship) with Allah that a person’s love is planted in the hearts of people.

“You are a refreshing source of inspiration to many people all over the world as a symbol of unimpeachable character, transparent honesty, un-impregnable integrity and unassailable righteousness.”

The council pleaded with Buhari not to abuse the trust Nigerians reposed in him.

It added: “We have no doubt that you are aware that leadership is a trust and that as Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, every shepherd (leader) will be asked about his flock (followers); yet, we must enjoin you to continue to do your best in the interest of the country.

“We urge you to continue to be fair and firm in leading Nigeria to where she deserves, despite the unfounded blackmail and character assassination by those whose pre-occupation is to eliminate Muslims and Islam from the public space in order to continue to use religion to exploit and extort gullible individuals.

“We urge you to be wary of hypocritical do-gooders contriving a non-existent tension for relevance when indeed by their partisan pre-election activities, they cannot genuinely lay claim to neutrality and sincerity.

“Our prayer is that the Almighty Allah continues to grant you good health, long life and divine wisdom to steer the ship of Nigeria to the shore of greatness in peace, development, security and decorum.  We also beseech Him to continue to guide and guard you in the discharge of your onerous duties so that you will remain a pre-eminent role model that you are for all incorruptible persons.

“As a matter of responsibility, we shall continue to pray for Your Excellency’s success because your success is unequivocally the collective glory of all sincere lovers of God irrespective of their religious or ethnic persuasion.”

  • Group urges Buhari to be magnanimous

The South West Consultative Forum has congratulated President  Muhammdu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on their victory at the just-concluded  presidential  elections.

The forum congratulated the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Co- Chair of the  APC Presidential Campaign Council , Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for his  efforts in ensuring that the party emerged victorious in the election.

SWCF  Executive Secretary, Comrade Osinowo Ibrahim, said the forum was proud of the party leadership efforts, noting that the Yoruba would remain in the mainstream politics.

“We are proud of Tinubu’s efforts at bringing the Yoruba to the centre piece of Nigerian politics.

‘The February 23 presidential election has proved to the entire nation that Tinubu is the political leader of the South West”.

It advised the party leadership and President Buhari to be magnanimous in victory by ensuring all zones are accommodated in the scheme of things.

“ We in particular request that the position of senate presidency is zoned to the South South region.

“ The zoning of the  senate presidency to the oil rich  zone of Nigeria will reduce the claim of neglect  by leaders of the region as well as ensuring peace and tranquility which is a  necessary requirement needed for the uplift of the Nigerian economy,” he said.
