Kalu urges Buhari to help reduce media cost

Former Abia State governor, Dr.  Orji Kalu, has urged  President Muhammadu Buhari to come to the aid of the print media owners to avoid job loss due to increasing cost of production in the industry.

Kalu, who spoke yesterday said  with the way things are in the print media, the industry is getting closer to the edge of the precipice, warning that it runs the risk of running at a loss because of the rising operational cost that is threatening the existence of most media organisations.

He, therefore, appealed to the president to urgently intervene to prevent job cuts.

‘The operational cost media houses have to contend with is huge and keeps rising daily. “We are dying from the burden. Our businesses are suffering. From the cost of newsprint to ink, blankets and plates, our consumables in the print media are expensive. The Sun Publishing uses 2,800 tons of newsprint every month, for instance. Add that to the cost of freighting, the dwindling fortunes of the naira and power challenges and it becomes obvious that our business terrain is facing more difficulties by the day. The Federal Government needs to come to our aid. If this bad tide is not stemmed, media owners may resort to downsizing to save cost and that will further worsen the nation’s already bad unemployment figures,” Kalu lamented.

He said all media houses are producing every copy of the newspapers Nigerians read at a loss.

‘The average cost of printing a copy of a newspaper is N500 and we sell for N150 or N200. That means media owners are subsidising every copy our readers get with N300. How long can we go on like that and stay in business? The government has to intervene to ensure journalists keep their jobs and we stay afloat,” he added.

Kalu said the media industry deserves a special intervention fund from government at a reduced interest rate among other palliatives to carry on with the business of publishing.

He urged other members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) to speak and lend their voice to this appeal to the government.

“All members of NPAN must join this appeal. We all need to work together on this. It is our battle, it is about our survival and if we don’t work together, all our businesses are at risk.

“For as long as our operational costs keep going through the roof,  the fortunes of newspaper houses will keep diminishing,” he warned.

  • NLC urges Buhari to wade into FMC crisis

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to wade into the over six weeks strike embarked up by workers of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, over corruption allegation against its Medical Director (MD), Dr.Angela Uwakwem.

President of the Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in a letter addressed to Buhari, said the situation in the institution has been worsened by the outright refusal of the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, to bring to Mr. President’s attention for approval, the Management Board’s resolution which recommended that the MD and the top management proceed on leave to pave the way for a thorough investigation into the matter.

He said: “You might wish to know, Sir, that a prima facie case of gross financial misconduct and embezzlement has already been established against the Medical Director. This was by way of an illegal withdrawal of personnel costs meant to pay staff promotion arrears for   2013 and 2014, the siphoning of funds meant for the running of the centre through channels of questionable privatisation process of some sections and services rendered by the hospital.

“It was on the strength of the prima facie case established by the board that the FMC Owerri board halted the privatisation process and passed a resolution that the MD and indicted members of her Top Management Committee (TMC) should proceed on compulsory leave to enable full investigation take place as prescribed by law and the public service rules.”

Wabba however, said the MD and the compromised members of the TMC have refused to budge, leveraging on their ally, the Permanent Secretary’s cover for their nefarious acts and an utter disregard to the powers and authority of the board of the institution to make recommendations to Mr. President on matters of this nature.

Wabba said the perpetuation of illegality and illegitimacy by the MD and her team must not be allowed to continue, while the Permanent Secretary must not be allowed to continue to usurp the powers of the President by holding onto the board’s recommendation to Buhari.

He said: “Our prayer, thus is for  you to urgently step into the matter, and consider and approve as necessary the recommendations of the board or give a directive as you may deem fit in the circumstances.

“A decisive action, Your Excellency, shall surely restore our confidence that under your watch, it is zero tolerance to corruption and impunity.”

He urged Buhari to urgently effect the payment of all outstanding entitlements of the affected workers, saying the development would ensure enthronement of greater productivity and better industrial harmony in the Centre.

  • Give us SGF, group urges Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to appoint an Igbo as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) said their choice for the SGF slot is Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the first civilian governor of Abia State, arguing that he has the qualities for the office.

They added that Onu’s personality and political exposure makes him not only the most eminently qualified, and will help the president win fight against corruption.

The group also weighed in on the contentious relocation of Boko Haram inmates to the Ekwulobia Prisons in Anambra State, which has stirred anxiety in the community and its environs.

In a release signed by the leader of the group, Okechukwu Isiguzo, they expressed their satisfaction on the steps taken by the federal government to recover stolen funds and restore sanity in critical sectors of the economy.

They also called on the President to set up an investigative committee to revisit the mysterious death of some innocent Nigerians at the Ezu River in Anambra State.

OYC wondered why those behind the dastardly act were yet to be nabbed and prosecuted.

PDP vows to reject elections conducted by new INEC boss

Peoples Democratic Party has vowed to reject any election conducted under the watch of the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. Amina Zakari.

The party has also urged the international community to call President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress “to order” over what it described as draconian and authoritarian tendencies of the government.

The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit to the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Abuja.

The PDP is making the move ahead of this weekend’s President Buhari’s visit to the United States to confer with President Barack Obama on ways to assist Nigeria in the fight against insurgency and corruption.

He complained to the NDI and the IRI that the INEC chief is “a daughter” to President Buhari and as such would not be fair in the discharge of her responsibility as the nation’s electoral umpire.

Metuh said, “We have INEC and the idea is that people heading it should be above board. But the present ruling party has appointed the daughter of the President to head the position. There is nowhere in the world where such has happened, a person who has a relationship with the President.

“I am drawing the attention of the IRI to this anomaly. Buhari has appointed his daughter as INEC chief, we believe there will not be fairness.

“It will be very difficult to accept result of any election conducted by Amina Zakari. It will be difficult for PDP to accept results of elections if we lose under Zakari.”

The PDP spokesman also decried Buhari’s style of leadership, accusing him of sidelining governors of the opposition on national issues. He maintained that under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, governors from the opposition parties were picked to travel with government team.

Metuh also accused Buhari of working hard to silence the opposition through harassment and intimidation.

He tabled the issue of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who he said was elected by his colleagues at the National Assembly, but who the Presidency was using the security apparatus to intimidate.

“I want to alert the international community on these issues and if they are not handled very well, could truncate our democracy. We have witnessed a remarkable change in the past few days.

“We encourage freedom and in just two months in power, we have witnessed organised witch hunt by the leadership of the APC in trying to muscle our people,” he complained.

Responding, the NDI Resident Country Director, Jasper Veen, noted that anywhere in the world, the most important area to tackle is the political party itself.

Veen, however, said the way Nigeria political parties recruit people for key positions was a reflection of the political system itself.

He urged internal democracy in the political parties, noting that it is not easy to be in the opposition.

  • Nigeria needs sacrifice, patriotism to overcome challenges – Buhari

Nigeria needs sacrifice, patriotism to overcome challenges – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said Nigeria needs sacrifices to overcome its present challenges and repair the damage done by bad governance.

The President made the call in his Eid-el-Fitr message to Nigerians.

The sacrifices, he said, are needed to accelerate the pace of national development in the country.

Buhari said: “Although we have come to the end of this year’s Ramadan, I believe that a greater acceptance by Nigerians of its key lessons of self-denial and sacrifice will serve our dear country well as we strive to overcome our present challenges, undo the damage done by years of bad governance and accelerate the pace of national development.

“Reviewing our dire circumstances and the many missed opportunities of the past, some commentators and observers have said that this is Nigeria’s last chance to get its act together and finally begin to fulfill its God-given potential for greatness.

“While not going that far, I certainly believe that now, more than ever before, our country needs greater self-denial, sacrifice and patriotism from all of its citizens, if we are to quickly recover from our numerous problems and start moving in a positive direction.”

The President said the current period offers Nigeria a great opportunity to break away from the vicious triangle of insecurity, corruption and under-development.

He added: “We must collectively resolve to seize this opportunity and unite to confront our problems. I remain wholly committed to giving the required leadership  towards undoing the wrongs of the past, ensuring that Nigeria truly begins to unlock its great potential and that the benefits of our immense national resources are shared and enjoyed by all, not just by successive cabals of corrupt leaders and their cronies.”

Stressing that he was not unaware of Nigerians’ high expectations when he assumed office on May 29, Buhari said he has been working with utmost dedication to meticulously plan and tackle the many national challenges which have been identified and to be resolved.

But to succeed, he said that he needs the continued support, understanding and patience of Nigerians.

  • Why PDP governors will back Buhari – Emmanuel

Why PDP governors will back Buhari – Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom State governor,  Udom Emmanuel, on Thursday said governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have no option but to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to succeed.

He spoke with State House correspondents after meeting President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He expressed delight at the way Buhari has been relating with governors irrespective of their political affiliations.

The governor said: “The day you are elected, you are no more a PDP governor, you are a governor of a state in Nigeria. There is nothing like PDP or APC any longer.

“People come out to elect you, party is just a platform in which you get to actually serve your people, the day you are elected and sworn in, you are sworn in as the governor of the whole state, the day you are sworn in, you were sworn in as the President of Nigeria.

“He (President) welcomes all of us as the father of the whole nation, it has nothing to do with partisanship here, it has to do with the people, the nation is about the people.

“Governance is about the people, we are just focusing on one project and for somebody like me, I have only one project at the back of my mind and that is the Akwa Ibom people project. The issue of partisanship does not occur here.”

The governor explained that he was at the presidential villa to discuss with the President the problem of gully erosion faced by thye state which needed urgent intervention.

He said the state government has intervened in the problem while expecting a refund from the Federal Government.

Buhari, Obama to discuss terrorism, economy, other issues

AHEAD of his four-day official trip to the United States (U.S.)on Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday met with a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

The duo held talks on the President’s pending visit at the meeting which held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President Buhari, who is honouring an invitation from U.S. President Barrack Obama will leave Abuja on Sunday to Washington DC to hold high-level talks with President Obama and other senior officials of the U.S.

Expectedly, measures on how to strengthen and intensify bilateral and international cooperation against terrorism in Nigeria and West Africa are priorities on President’s wish-list, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, President Buhari, who will next Monday meet with President Obama at the White House, will hold further discussions with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Martin Dempsey and the Deputy Secretary of Defence, Robert Work. They will be discussing military and defence cooperation.

The President is also scheduled to meet Vice President Joe Biden and confer with the US Attorney-General, Loretta Lynch, Secretary of Treasury, Jack Lew, Secretary of Commerce, Penny  Pritzker and  Trade Representative, Michael Froman on America’s support for the Federal Government’s anti-corruption crusade as well as new ways of boosting Nigeria-United States trade relations.

The President, who will be received by the U.S. Secretary of State at the State Department in Washington DC, will also hold meetings with the  Senate and Congressional Committees on Foreign Relations, as well as the Black Caucus of the  House of Representatives.

Before returning next Thursday, President Buhari will address the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Corporate Council for Africa and host an interactive session with Nigerians in the American Diaspora.

Mr. Adesina listed Governors of Imo (Rochas Okorocha); Nasarawa (Tanko Al-Makura); Edo (Adams Oshiohmole); Borno (Kashim Shettima) and Oyo (Abiola Ajimobi).

Others are Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele and permanent secretaries in the ministries of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Industry, Trade and Investment.

The US trip will also afford President Buhari the opportunity of a reunion with members of the American War College Class of 1980 in which he was a distinguished participant.

After his meeting with the President yesterday, Chief Anyaoku, who spoke with reporters and gave an insight into his mission at the State House.

He said:  ”We talked international affairs, including particularly, the President’s impending visit to the United States.”

The former Commonwealth scribe however declined to disclose details of the meeting as he stressed that it would be inappropriate for him to publicly divulge the advice he gave Buhari privately.

ýBut he expressed confident in President Buhari’s commitment to the anti-corruption fight.

Anyaoku said: “I had a positive discussion with the President, we discussed international affairs, including in particular his forthcoming visit to the United States on the invitation of President Obama.

“We also touched on some national issues because of the strong link between foreign policy and domestic issues. I put at his disposal the benefits of my long experience on governance matters with Heads of Governments of 54-member countries of the Commonwealth and also other issues related to internal affairs.

“I can tell myself talking to a President who is very determined to effect a real change in the circumstances of our country and very determined too to being to bear on his administration the generally perceived attributes of his character, which I believe many Nigerians would support.”

On corruption, he said: “Well, I believe that before he became president, he was known as somebody who has very strong passion for anti-corruption, I believe that he is determined to fight and he would go a long way in doing so. Corruption is a very endemic issue in our society and I’m quite impressed of his determination to do something about it.

“Well, I can tell from the strong impression I got from my discussion with him that he is very determined.”

Publisher of Ovation  magazine yesterday Dele Momodu was also at the Presidential Villa.

He said: “I met with Mr. President and our conversation was very candid and I find him extremely jovial. We discussed different issues affecting our country and I gave him my own idea as a publisher, journalist, a columnist and the way forward for Nigeria.

“He laughed a lot about some of the things I said, I will share one of them with you. I said women must be involved in the governance of Nigeria and he looked at me. I said Sir, women cannot marry two husbands but a man can have four wives and 10 concubines, he almost choked ýhe laughed so much.

“I said so when you talk about corruption the needs of women are not as big as that of men and he said that is a very interesting theory.”

He said that the issues of insecurity and corruption were also discussed at the closed-door meeting.

”We spoke about security and the efforts he is making, we spoke about anti-corruption crusade and I must say today he reassured me that not only does he know what he is doing, he is determined to make Nigeria work,” Momodu said.

He denied a report on the social media which quoted him as saying that the President was too slow.

Momodu said: “You know how social media people can post anything. I actually wrote him a memo and one of the things I told him is that the job of a columnist is that of an adviser who is not paid, in fact journalists all of you standing here do more worký than those paid to advise the president and that it is good to listen.

“And I know he reads voraciously and that was one of reasons he was able to invite me because I wrote what I called a desperate memo to President Buhari.

“Of course people slanted it, some people said maybe we are no longer supporting him and all that.

“If you like someone you must be able to tell him the truth at all times, and what I have realized in so many years of interacting with people in government is that once you get to power, people stops telling you the truth, they tell you only what they think you want to hear.

“And I’m happy he said we should argue with him, tell him the truth if things are going wrong ýand we should not be afraid of telling the truth.

“And for a man who has been maligned for so many years that he doesn’t like the press, is a welcome development that he is able to reach out to members of fourth estate.”
