Buhari Campaign, Atiku: no to postponement

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Buhari Campaign Council have warned the government against postponing the February 14 and 28 elections, saying they should be allowed to go ahead as scheduled.

Atiku said there was enough time for the distribution of the permanent voter cards, adding: “Yes, we have a problem with the distribution of PVCs but the position of my party, the APC, is that since we have a voter register then that should be used in conducting the elections. I also believe there is enough time between now and the elections to issue everyone with their PVCs.”

The former Vice President, who arrived yesterday from overseas medical trip, said the call by the National Security Adviser (NSA), for a postponement of the election portended a dangerous signal about the intentions of the Federal Government to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

Saying he was “strong, healthy and happy” to be back to lend his support to the “wind of change” sweeping across the country, Atiku said: “The duty of participating in the process of change, which our great party, the APC, is committed to supersedes every other consideration. For me, participating in this campaign is a call to national duty.

“It is a duty which we cannot afford to compromise upon and we must press into the consciousness of those at the helm of affairs that it is morally dubious and socially unacceptable to extend the dates of the elections by a single day from the scheduled timelines”.

The APC Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) said in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, that such a proposal as being contemplated is ill-advised.

“We smelt the plot that this unpopular PDP Federal Government would do anything to stay put in power, elongation of term has always been on the President’s agenda; no wonder he and his party want the election delayed or cancelled outright to effect an extension of their lacklustre administration.

”Gone are the days when a few persons can hold the destiny of our dear nation to ransom. In fact, Nigerians would have called for an early election than February, if our political system is parliamentary.

“For Jonathan’s government is worse than a rotten egg. It’s smelly, full of sleaze, neck deep in corruption and uncaring. Two vital organs of government have downed tools for nearly two months – the health and judicial sectors – and he does not give a damn!

“The nation’s currency (naira) is daily plummeting in value, the oil sector in virtual comatose, the economy runs on deficit, unemployment skyrocketing, insecurity on the loose, decaying infrastructure and a loss of sound national image. Nigerians have never had it so bad.

“Hence, any delay or postponement of the elections amounts to testing the patience of the people. We are all tired of a corrupt government, one full of ineptitude, incompetence and lack of ideas. Nobody can scuttle our hard-earned democracy in Nigeria.”

The Organisation also said that it preferred to engage the PDP campaign spokesman, Femi Fani Kayode, on issues that have the potential to bring the greatest good for the greatest number of Nigerians.

It said that said it was laughable the PDP would not let-go of the educational qualifications of the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, even when the matter has been laid to rest.

“It is not our desire in the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation to join an individual who has a record of talking to please the moment on any petty issue.  At some point in the recent past, it was convenient for Fani-Kayode to say this of the APC and its leaders: ‘What Nigerians need now is to join hands with the APC leaders, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to move the nation forward.’ Today, a Fani-Kayode sees no desecration in recanting that same position, just to satisfy his convenience.”

  • Buhari promises efficient infrastructure

    Buhari promises efficient infrastructure

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari yesterday assured Nigerians of functional infrastructure if elected.

Speaking during his campaign in Sokoto, he promised to tap the nation’s mineral resources for the benefit of all.

He also pledged to wage anti-corruption war and ensure the judicious use of recovered funds.

Buhari said: “We will also partner with the state government to boost agriculture; ensure provision of potable water and efficient health care delivery.

“Our concern is to provide better maternal and child healthcare services for the grassroots”, he said.

The Kangiwa square where the campaign was held was jampacked by Buhari’s supporters who swept the venue before the rally. The sweeping was to “cleanse” the square of the effect of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s rally the previous day.

Many, including school children, who took advantage of the work free day declared by the government, thronged the venue in large numbers.

They came as early as 7am.

Buhari pledged to overhaul the security system and give more attention to the military to curb insurgency.

“We will make our security agencies the pride of our survival by ensuring adequate attention is giving to them in terms of welfare and equipment so that we can sleep with our eyes closed”, he said.

Governor Aliyu Wamakko rejected calls by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki for the shift of next month’s election.

He described Dasuki’s call as unwarranted, adding: “APC and Nigerians are ready for the conduct of February elections.”

“It is clear that they are afraid. The rights and wishes of Nigerians must be respected if we are sincere as a democratic nation”.

It took Buhari over five hours to reach Sokoto from Gusau, the Zamfara state capital, where he held a rally the previous day.

The young and the old gathered to catch a glimpse of Buhari and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. The crowd stopped them enroute Sokoto, demanding to be addressed.

  •  Fayose death wish for Buhari

Recently, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose placed an advert on the front page of The Punch suggesting that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, will die in office if elected president.

The advert, which has the pictures of Murtala Muhammed, Sani Abacha, and Umaru Yar’Adua – past Nigerian leaders who died in office was accompanied by excerpt from the Bible book of Deuteronomy 30 verse 19.

”Nigerians be warned! Nigeria…I have set before thee life and death. Therefore, choose life that both thee, and thy seed may live,” it said, suggesting that General Buhari represents death, while his rival, President Goodluck Jonathan represents life. The advert put a huge question mark over the picture of General Buhari, which was placed beside the pictures of the late leaders. The advert then asked its readers: “Will you allow history to repeat itself? Enough of State burials.”

It is crystal clear that Fayose and his cohorts are not only desperate, they are playing God by professing death for somebody on account of age and election. Fayose’ divisive advert is enough to plunge the country into political cum ethnic crisis, especially at this critical period when the polls are gathering momentum. If not, why was the advert placed on a day that President Jonathan was in Sokoto State for campaign rally? It may not be out of place to infer that the move was part of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) strategy to see if the forthcoming polls would be scuttled or postponed as result of induced violence or provocation of the North.

But the North and the APC’s reaction to it have shown that they are more sagacious politically than President Jonathan and his PDP cohorts. Fayose and the PDP have forgotten that there is no correlation between age and death because sickness and death knows no age or tribe. Even if the likes of Sani Abacha, Murtala Mohammed, and Umaru Yar’Adua died in office as presidents of the country at different times, why would Fayose single out deceased former presidents of the country from the North in the advert? Have Fayose and the PDP forgotten that General JTU Aguiyi Ironsi from Abia State, like Murtala Muhammed, was killed while in office as Head of State? Or is it, as stated by the Buhari Campaign Organisation, that the PDP and its agents are planning to kill Buhari if he wins the election?

Just like Fayose, every Nigerian has antecedents, and we know ourselves well. It is often said that leopard can never change her colour. A pig will ever remain so no matter how many times you bathe it. Claiming change of character in old age is a ruse; one cannot learn using left hand in old age.

In PDP and the Presidency are many characters like Fayose who believe they know better than Nigerians. Unfortunately for them, Nigerians know them well as accidental and opportunistic leaders. One of the presidential aides recently declared that wat is better for the country to disintegrate, instead of APC winning the presidential election! Those behind the retinue of advertorials for President Jonathan’s re-election in print and electronic media are greatest beneficiaries of subsidy, aviation and power sector scams. They have used the money to form different support groups for President Jonathan’s re-election. Two of them that symbolized fraud and corruption before Jonathan’s government were from South-east zone. They lack character and integrity, but these are President’s friends who are driving his campaign with the country’s looted fund. These are people being celebrated in the Presidency today where corruption, sycophancy and mediocrity are being adored, celebrated, and encouraged.

With this calibre of people hobnobbing with President Jonathan, Nigerians were not surprised at Fayose’s action. In the coming days, many more of such provocative, insensitive and divisive adverts, actions or comments will emanate from the president’s camp, because they have no useful message to give Nigerians. Fayose’s advert has also shown that those who claimed to be working for President Jonathan’s re-election are indirectly working against it, by doing more damage to his image.

Again by the advert content, Fayose has agreed that Buhari will win the election, except that he wishes that he will die in office like Abacha, Muhammed and Yar Adua. What a daft and preposterous thinking by those who call themselves leaders! Recall that some of the President’s cohorts have been comparing him with great world leaders like late Dr. Nelson Mandela, US President Barack Obama and others without showing the correlation between Jonathan’s personality and that of these great world leaders. Unlike people like Fayose and other supporters of Jonathan’s re-election, the issue at stake now is not about age or death, it is about leadership, antecedents, performance and the future of the country. Besides, God is the creator and controller of the universe and not a mere mortal. Politicians must draw a parallel line between God and politics of hatred, because of its consequences. The holy writ says: “But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”

Buhari urges home state to vote him

All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari took his campaign to his Katsina home state yesterday.

A huge crowd welcomed the APC train with Party Chairman Chief John Odigie –Oyegun and national leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu among others. Governorship candidate Aminu Bello Masari was also at the rally.

The rally was held at the Filin Polo ground where Buhari said if elected, he would focus on tackling corruption, revamping the health sector and addressing insecurity.

He urged his supporters to ensure their votes count

He also promised to diversify the economy with emphasis on solid minerals and agriculture.

He said if these sectors are properly harnessed, there will be employment opportunities.

Tinubu faulted the involvement of the army by Jonathan is an attempt to discredit Gen. Buhari.

“Whether Buhari has certificate  or not, it is him we are going to vote. Please Jonathan should not  drag the army into this except if they are Jonathan’s army” he said

According to him, the Nigerian army recruited and promoted Gen Buhari to all ranks without a certificate wondering why the sudden issue around his certificate.

Oyegun urged Nigerians to ensure that their votes count, saying Katsina should vote for APC candidates from top to the bottom

He insisted that the issues at stake were not about Buhari but the move to salvage the country from the grip of those destroying it. He said Nigerians had made up their minds to vote for General Buhari

  • PDP accuses Buhari of perjury

    PDP accuses Buhari of perjury

The presidential campaign organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, of perjury.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja yesterday, the Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, urged Buhari to withdraw from the contest and apologise to Nigerians.

Fani-Kayode was reacting to claims by the Army that although Gen. Buhari obtained the West African School Certificate in 1961, copies of his certificate could not be found in the Army’s records.

But the PDP insisted that the APC flag bearer had committed a “grave criminal offence” under the law and constitution

The statement said: “Information reaching us now has shown that the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed today in Kano at a press conference that the affidavit he swore to in which he claimed that his credentials were in the custody of the military was not true after all.

“The implication…is nothing but perjury and we all know that this is a grave criminal offence under our laws and constitution.

“We urge Buhari and his party to do the right thing and tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people, throw in the towel and report to the nearest police station for interrogation and prosecution.

“Anything less than that would be an insult to the collective intelligence and integrity of the Nigerian people. We also urge the Nigerian Armed Forces to consider the possibility of stripping him of his rank and privileges, given the fact that he was never qualified to join the Nigerian army  as a commissioned officer in the first place because he never had the prerequisite qualifications which was a school certificate. Given this, at best Buhari should never have been anything more than a non-commissioned officer.”

The President’s campaign organisation also blamed Buhari and APC supporters for the reported attack by suspected thugs on the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan during his campaign rally in Katsina on Tuesday.

“We consider that action despicable, barbaric, shameful and highly reprehensible. It shows very clearly the violent nature, disposition and character of those individuals that were involved and the presidential candidate that they support.

  • 2015: Jonathan, Buhari, the Rich and the Poor (4)

Nigeria is at a cross-roads. Wither will it go? Left or right, backward or forward? Mother Nature abhors standstill. It is either hither or thither progress or retrogression! Already, Nigerians who believe the country has been hurtling downhill in her economy, social life and morality wish to dispense with the Ebele Jonathan Administration.

They want change! There are other Nigerians who believe that the devil you know is better than the one you do not. To such people, it is better to let President Jonathan continue in office for another four years. Between the two poles, even the blind can now tell where the wind will blow in a free and fair election.

But as I said last Thursday, other than some evident lapses of the Jonathan Administration, there would appear to be no serious issues raised so far in the campaigns to help fence-sitting voters decide which camp it is better to be. To summarise what President Jonathan’s critics hold against him, his government has been slack and has allowed government functionaries and institutions to become loose cannons. The net results have been indiscipline, corruption a national hurtle downhill. Thus, the last six years have witnessed no governance, but ruling.

There is a gulf between these words. In governance, there is a scheme, an act or a script which weaves a nation together into one organic being. This act is founded on, thorough planning. We had a semblance of this in the four year national development plans. We can all see it in the desire of the United States to become self-sufficient in petrol provision.

Currently, Nigeria is short of cash, hasn’t paid federal and state civil servants for five whopping months, yet the country is burning money in the oil fields through gas flaring! In ruling, power is deployed not as an engine which moves the country forward, but to maintain the leader in office, harass or distroy opposition.

  • Buhari/Osinbajo: Yes they can

SIR: The fastest way Nigerians can save, change and make Nigeria great is for everyone of us to begin to practice and promote politics of nationalism, patriotism, national unity, service to humanity,

religious tolerance, principle, conscience, morality, as well as see that we condemn politics of ethnicity, tribalism and religious fanaticism because despite our diverse ethnic groups we are one people, one nation, one destiny.

I have observed that at work, school, church, mosque and even in sports/entertainment and NYSC

we are one but once politics is mentioned every Nigerian becomes ethnic, tribal and religious fanatics both at local government, state and national levels.

The time has come for us to see ourselves as one entity called Nigeria; we should also demand that government provides us with the basic necessities of life which are shelter, children’s

education, potable water, good and adequate food, health care, good roads, employment and a decent wage, good public transportation, security of lives and property, electricity and reasonable comfort.

Barrack Obama’s “change” will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the change we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Pass this message to your friends and family members colleagues at work, church, mosque, school e.t.c

Nigeria will be up and doing only when citizens like you and I wake up and think accurately in carrying out our activities in the interest of Nigeria.

Buhari/Osinbajo have what it takes to save, change and make Nigeria great.

  • 2015: Why we cleared Buhari for election – Onu

2015: Why we cleared Buhari for election – Onu

A former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said on Wednesday that the All Progressive Congress Presidential Screening Committee cleared the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in compliance with the constitution.

He told a select group of journalists at his Abuja residence that the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act stipulates that anybody contesting the presidential election must be a Nigerian by birth, must be 40 years of age, must be a member of a political party that must sponsor him for the election and have at least, a secondary school certificate or its equivalent.

Onu, who headed the APC screening committee that cleared Buhari to contest the party primaries where he defeated former vice president Atiku Abubakar and three others, said people have consistently ignored the operational word in the constitution.

“Really, that issue should not create the type of problem we are seeing in the polity. This matter came before us in the Presidential Screening Committee and we had to rely on the constitution of the country. To qualify to be president of the country, you have to be a Nigerian by birth, you have to be 40 years of age, you have to be a member of a political party and that party should sponsor you and finally, you should obtain education of at least secondary school certificate level or its equivalent.

” We have a man who had attended military schools in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, in India and in the United States of America and in America, he attended the U.S Army War college. So, there isn’t any reason to create this type of problem we now have in the polity.

“As part of the screening, we demanded for a copy of the certificate, but there was an affidavit and once you swear to an affidavit, it gives you whatever protection you need and not just on this issue.

“We were not doing this for this opposition, we were doing it for Nigeria. This is a man who will be President of Nigeria and there is a supreme law which is the constitution that guides us.
“The issue of qualification is at least, school certificate. So, If there is evidence that somebody has attended military schools that are tertiary institutions in lauding the war college of the United States of America, why should you be going into the issue of school certificate and so on?

“The Army has shown that he applied in form six. Many of you don’t know that we use to have form six. I attended higher schools. That is what it was called and you spend two years and you can’t go to form six unless you have completed your form five and obtain the relevant credits in the relevant subjects.

“All these are in his file, and so, I really don’t see why we should be thinking in this direction because the problems before the nation are enormous. We should be looking at how do we solve the problem of insecurity in a country that is the largest and most populous black nation in the world, the largest economy in Africa and you have flags that are unknown to the constitution flying in our territory. That is a very serious challenge for the nation.

“We have unemployment, we have an economy that has not been managed properly. I am a chemical engineer and it pained me that for 16 years, we abandoned our refineries and import petroleum products. We are the sixth largest exporters of crude oil in the world. Then we import refined petroleum products. You have all these chemical engineers and so, what else do you need? We have four refineries and we can’t even keep them running for 16 years. This is very disturbing.”

  • Why Itsekiri chose Buhari over Jonathan – Group

An Itsekiri pressure group in Warri, Delta State, on Wednesday gave reasons why their kinsmen would rather vote for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in next month’s election despite intense lobby of support for President Goodluck Jonathan by Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo).

The Itsekiri Consolidated Movement (ICM), at a press conference in Ubeji-Warri on Wednesday evening, addressed by Ortisegbegbemi Besidone and Franklin Metsese, Chairman and Public Relations Officers respectively, noted that the overbearing influence of Tompolo and other Ijaws in the state showed that their interests would be better served in the APC.

They noted that the peace shuttle by Tompolo and other emissaries of President Jonathan would no longer sway the Itsekiri people because of perceived tribal politics of the President and his kinsmen.

“In as much as we believe Tompolo has the constitutional right to campaign for President Goodluck Jonathan and Senator Ifeanyi Okowa/Kingsley Otuaro, his cousin, we want to assure Tompolo that his voyage is set to hit the rock, particularly on Jonathan’s re-election bid, unless he puts the following politically damaging records straight:

“Why did Tompolo lead the killing of hundreds of Itsekiris during the Warri crisis and forcefully took over Itsekiri God-given communities without any remorse or apology till date?

“Without prejudice to party or personality of Itsekiri candidate (s) for Warri South-West Chairmanship in the October 25, 2014 local government poll, why did Tompolo with the backing of the Presidency threaten and hoodwink Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan into handing the Chairmanship of Warri South-West to his sibling, Hon. George Ekpemupolo 48 hours to the election against the gentleman agreement of single tenure rotation between Ijaw and Itsekiri in the local government?”

“Tompolo has to explain why he and his Gbaramatu brothers are laying claim to lands belonging to Itsekiri (Omadino and Ugborodo Communities) particularly the area where the EPZ is situated and till date, despite claiming not to be waging war against Itsekiri.

“Tompolo is yet to tender apology to the 14 abducted journalists, including a Channels TV camera man, Itsekiri born Senior Correspondent of Daily Independent Newspaper, Mr. Emma Arubi and six Ugborodo indigenes, who were humiliated as well as tortured almost to the point of death by his militants on his order on their way from Escravos, where they went to perform their legitimate duty of letting the world know the Itsekiri’s angle of the true owner of the land hosting the EPZ.”

  • When Awujale received Buhari

The meeting was meant to be a presentation of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhamodu Buhari and his running mate Prof. Yemi Oshibajo to the Paramount ruler of Ijebu Land, The Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona by the presidential campaign train, led by the national chairman of the party Chief John Oyegun but turned out to be a recognition of the role of the national leader of the party senator Bola Hammed Tinubu in unifying the Yoruba nation.

Awujale also prayed for Tinubu, the Ogun State governor Ibikule Amosun and his wife Chief Mrs. Funsho Amosun for ensuring rapid development across the 20 local governments of the state saying his 55 years on the throne has witness many government in the state but the present one is unique.

The monarch said Tinubu’s activities in ensuring that Yoruba  nation speaks with one voice cannot be over emphasised adding that his activities shows that he was ready to face any challenges without giving a damn.

“Leadership is all about sacrifice. A leader who cannot sacrifice is not worth to be a leader; therefore, I want to thank Tinubu for his effort.

“Although, he used to play Lagos pranks at times, but he is a man that faces many challenges. He doesn’t run away from challenges. He doesn’t give a dame to anything. We started Yoruba agenda here with him and ended it in Ondo state during the military juntas.

“Fearless people like him are great. I love somebody like him. I like them. Tinubu has always been a man of my heart and when he makes mistake, I am the most critical of his actions.

“Therefore, I want to say thank You for what you have been doing for Yoruba nation to be what it is today. That we are all gathered here today as a family, it is the effort of the Jagaban because Yoruba nation can speak with one voice now.

“I pray that God in His infinity mercy gives you good health to continue to be useful in the development of the Yoruba race and Nigeria at large. May God help you to continue to remain in the social service and continue to contribute positively to the development of this land the way you have been doing.”

The monarch also seeks for the support of the federal government in case the presidential candidate of the party wins the election. He said he was hopeful that General Buhari will win the election because he has all it takes to become the president of Nigeria.

In his request, the Awujale said top on the agenda of the Ijebu nation is the agitation for Ijebu State which Ijebu have been clamouring for in the past. He said his people have the human and natural resources to be a state. “The most important thing on our agenda is the agitation for Ijebu State. We want you to help us to see to this as soon as you win the election. Our people are very hard working and we have all it takes to be on our own. We also want the federal government to come and establish in our state because we lack the presence of the government here in Ijebu. For instance, we need federal medical centre where our children can be trained as doctors and nurses, but it seems government has no time for us.

“We have places where government can explore our natural resources at the Ogun water side. There is oil in abundance in Ogun waterside but government has no time for us to develop it. Our General, please consider the Ijebu nation as soon as you win the election.”

On the governor Ibikunle Amosun administration, Awujale said he has contributed immensely to the development of the state as a whole and he deserves royal blessing. He said all the development witnessed in the state today have been brought of joy to the people of the state. “I want to congratulate the governor of the state for his effort in ensuring the state is what it is today. If you don’t know him, you will believe he is a tough man but he is not tough. He is a kind man. I pray that God should be with you to be able to deliver the message that God sent you to the people of the state. I also want to use this time to thank Yeye Funsho Amosun. She is a wonderful woman. I made bold to say she is a wonderful woman because she is one. If she is bad, I will say it here now that she is a bad woman. I thank both of you and Allah will be with both of you for your effort.

Earlier, General Buhari had enumerated how he intended to make Nigeria great again. He told the Awujale that he would use men of integrity at a strategic position of the economy and massively invests in agriculture sector.

Buhari, who was accompanied by other party stalwarts like the national chairman of APC, chief John Oyegun, Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, Buhari’s running mate, Prof. Yemi Osibajo, former governor of Lagos State and the national leader of the party Senator  Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former national chairmen of the People Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Audu Ogbe and Senator Banabas Gemade, Prince Tony Momoh, former governors of Ekiti State,  Chief Niyi Adebayo and Engineer Segun Oni, and former Governor of Kwara State Senator Bukola Saraki.

According to the APC presidential flag bearer, the party has identified insecurity, unemployment and corruption as the immediate challenges facing the country which must be tackled as soon as he assumed the presidency.

“It makes a lot of sense for the APC to identify these vicious cycles and go along to make sure to tackle insecurity in the country and stabilise the economy.

“Naturally, businesses will boom and you will create more employment opportunities when you solve the power conundrum. With steady and affordable power supply, the economy can truly become industrialised.

“That is why the commitment of the APC is that there would be people of knowledge, experience and integrity to man strategic positions in the government,” Buhari said.

While backing the candidature of Buhari, his running mate Professor Yemi Osibajo said that though there was no man for all seasons, the qualities of the former Head of State has made him the man for the moment. “No matter what anybody may say about Buhari, one thing everybody agrees with is that he his a forthright, honest and committed Nigerian,” Osibajo said.
