  • Jonathan is guilty of ethnic and religious politics – el-Rufai

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has  accused President Goodluck Jonathan of playing ethnic and religious politics to divert the  attention of Nigerians from the bad governance going on in the country.
The former Minister who spoke on a Liberty radio guest of the week programme monitored in Kaduna on Saturday  also accused the president of lacking the capacity to call to order all those beating the war drums across the country.
el-Rurai noted that  having gone through one civil war, the country may not survive another war.
He said that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were afraid of the person of former Head of State, General Mohammadu Buhari and therefore will do everything humanly possible to destroy him and brand him an ethnic and religious bigot.
”There are many agents confronting the Nigerian nation. What is very worrying is the kind of rhetoric that is going on in this country, a lot of which are being sanctioned by the government. For example, whenever Asari Dokubo speaks, just know that a week earlier, he had been called to the villa and given some money and whenever EK Clerk speak, you know it was arranged.
“How can a small ethnic group like the Ijaws threaten the rest of us? We have 170 million; I don’t know how many of that population makes up the Ijaw nation, but I don’t think they are more than 5 million.
“How can 5 million people threaten us saying unless their son becomes president, there will be no Nigeria? Who are they to do that? The government keeps quit when somebody says that. Of course, the expected reaction is that you have people from the north also threatening similar thing.
“What type of a country do we have where there is no one to call people to order? It is sad. Again, it is this political strategy of Jonathan to always use ethnicity and religion whenever there is a problem.
“Whenever there is a big issue about Excess Crude account or subsidy issue, they bring this issue of ethnicity and religion. But I have not lost hope because I know that Nigerians can see through their pranks and their game and will vote them out in the next election. The challenge for the next president is to build trust among the various ethnic groups so that Nigeria can walk towards one direction.
“This country has gone through one civil war; I don’t know of any country that can survive two civil wars and those that are stealing crude oil; buying and stockpiling arms should know it is not the number of arms you have that decides who wins a war. Otherwise, the USA would have won in Iraq, but they couldn’t and at the end they had to leave the Iraqi to solve their problems.
“So, they should think very deeply about what they are doing and learn from history. I know that Nigeria will survive these bad and incompetent leaders who steal during the day and drink and womanise at night instead of working for the Nigerian people,  ” el-Rufai stated.

  • Buhari: I’ll run if APC approves

Buhari: I’ll run if APC approves

FORMER Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari spoke yesterday on his political future, saying he would run for president in 2015 – if fielded by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gen. Buhari, who spoke personally for the first time since the party’s registration last Wednesday, praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its impartiality.

The APC will give Nigerians a new lease of life, the former Head of State said, while receiving members of the Democratic Emancipation Movement, who visited him in his office in Kaduna.

Gen. Buhari, who contested the presidential election three times in the past, said the main focus of the APC now is to mobilise Nigerians to push the PDP out of power in 2015.

On whether he will run in 2015, he said: “My decision will be tied to the Constitution of the APC; if the party chooses me as its candidate, I will contest; if they do not consider, I will not contest but I will still support the party. My decision to run in 2015 will solely be the party’s decision.”

Gen. Buhari recalled the journey leading to the merger, saying: “I thought about this merger since 2007. This is because I found out that none of the opposition parties can challenge the PDP successfully. But if we come together with those that have representation at the National Assembly and the Houses of the Assembly and go back to sensitise our constituencies, even if the PDP wants to rig, they would find it impossible to rig.

“I discovered that by been so divisive, we made ourselves very vulnerable. So, the best way to survive and for this country to stabilise, we had to come together and I believe along the line, we made necessary sacrifices,” he said.

Gen. Buhari praised INEC for registering the APC. He said: “To be honest, we have to thank INEC, because when we thought we had applied according to the 2010 Electoral Act, INEC drew our attention to the section that said there must be the headquarters at the federal capital that is good enough to be called a headquarters of a national party, then our Constitution, our manifesto, the harmonisation of the three main parties.

“We thought that the initial nine signatories were enough to manage the party in the interim between registration and convention, but INEC advised us that we needed to get between 25 and 35 people to come out from the six geo-political zones to sign.”

“If the INEC wanted to be wicked, they could have kept mute and just sent us a letter that our application was not complete; they could have done that. But for them to send us an observation which was later corrected, I believe they were very impartial and we thank them for that,” Gen. Buhari said.

In his view, the APC’s emergence has lowered tension in the country. “The tension has already come and gone. People now think that they have a viable alternative. These feelings and belief is across the country, not only in the North or in the Southwest. There is a good feeling about the party in all the political zones of the country.

“Our next important step is the mobilisation of constituencies to make sure that elections are conducted according to law.

“In 2003, 2007, 2011, a lot of disgraceful things happened during those elections. We are trying now to put the structure of APC on the ground from the ward to the national levels with the hope to give Nigerians hope and to win power.

“Those that are going to be in charge of the party from now till the convention are the people that are very committed to the party’s stabilisation and political strength. We have started working hard to ensure that we avoid problems.”

He attributed the registration of the APC and other political parties to the efforts of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), the Lagos lawyer and right activist.

“It was the late Chief Fawehinmi, who took the letter I wrote and went to the Supreme Court to stop the ruling party from denying other parties registration. We thank Gani Fawehinmi for his foresight to challenge the matter at the Supreme Court,” Gen. Buhari said.

Leader of the Democratic Emancipation Movement, Matamaki Tom Maiyashi, said Nigerians were aware of several efforts aimed at sabortaging the registration of the party.

He said: “The registration of APC marked a point in the political history of our country that will mark the beginning of a watershed in the political struggle of Nigeria.

“In fact, the PDP is very lucky that APC is registered, because the registration of APC has doused a lot of tension in the country.

“People now have hope that there is an alternative. It was not an easy thing, but we have an alternative. The monster that is called the PDP will be driven out by 2015.”

  • Buhari: Nigeria on destruction path

    Buhari: Nigeria on destruction path

Former Head of State and presidential standard-bearer of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), yesterday said with the education sector in shambles, socio-economic infrastructure breaking down and deep-seated corruption, the country has embarked on “the path of destruction.”

The CPC chieftain, who spoke as a special guest/speaker at the Annual National Conference of the Academy for Entrepreneurship Studies (AES), held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, said what the nation needs “at this crucial time of its journey is a transformational leader.”

He lamented that those in charge of the management of the country do not have ideas about how to move the nation forward.

Buhari was represented at the event by Dr. Mohammed Hassan Lawal, former Minister of Works and Housing. He said as Nigeria reaches another crossroads in its march to nationhood, the process of governance, the issue of leadership and the “teething problems of nation building are issues that must be examined and discussed. This should go on until the nation comes to some kind of agreement about them, and about how much of characteristics of good governance it must adopt because these underlie the conditions that lead to the birth, emergence, stability and development of nation-states.”

According to him, it is no longer news that the problem of the country is that of bad leadership.

He said the unfortunate but not surprising result of this has been “our endemic bad governance, which alienates people from their leaders, shuts the door on the development of national consensus and prevents the emergence of a clear national identity.”

“Rule has been arbitrary and unaccountable; decisions have not been consensus-oriented and government is not responsive, neither has the conduct of its business been transparent. “Therefore, the fight for good governance is our collective fight and we must contribute our quota in seeing it to its logical conclusion, which is the emergence of a democratic republic founded on the rule of law in which our people can place their hopes and faith,” he said.

  • Vatsa’s son attacks Buhari

The son of former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, the late Maj.-Gen. Mamman Vatsa and National Coordinator of Concerned Arewa Youth Forum (CAYF), Jibril Mamman Vatsa, yesterday urged former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to resign from politics and allow a peace to reign in the nation’s politics.

In a statement in Kaduna, Vatsa described as unfortunate a recent statement credited to the former Nigerian leader that the government was killing Boko Haram members and destroying their property while treating the Niger Delta militants with kid gloves.

The statement reads: “The statement made by retired General Muhammadu Buhari, former Head of State and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) yesterday, where he accused both President Goodluck Jonathan and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, is unfortunate.

“That the CAN President is ‘keen on helping the electoral fortunes of his friend, President Goodluck Jonathan’ is baseless, especially when weighed against the national and security implications of his earlier statement that the Boko Haram sect members were being killed and their houses destroyed while Niger Delta militants were being trained and given employment.

“Indeed, we would have expected Christians to rise up against Pastor Oritsejafor, if he had not reacted the way he did, being the leader of the religion in Nigeria whose members were being killed. And if as he said, he is not in the mould of leaders who do not match their words with deeds, then Nigerians and Nigeria are in for greater insecurity if Buhari ascends the highest office in the land. This is because with a religious bigot in the saddle, Nigerians do not need any other enemy.

“We disagree with Gen. Buhari that Oritsejafor’s statement ‘is lacking in facts’ as presented by him. As northerners, who are concerned about the terrible state of the socio-political and economic activities of the North, we expect to see northern elders sitting up to put their house in order. But what we have are northern elders screaming at imaginary enemies of the North while our once thriving and dominant region is becoming the problem child of the nation.

  • Oritsejafor chides Buhari on Boko Haram

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, yesterday expressed sadness over former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari’s comment for members of the Boko Haram.

Buhari, CAN said, should have advised the sect to stop their ‘evil’ deeds instead of justifying their activities.

The National Leader of the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) recently questioned the “special treatment” given to the Niger-Delta militants by the Federal Government, while Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses destroyed by the government.

He was quoted to have said: “They (the Niger-Delta militants) were trained in some skills and given employment, but the ones in the North are being killed and their houses demolished.”

But Oritsejafor disagreed with Buhari’s stand and advised President Goodluck Jonathan to order his arrest as part of means to find a solution to insecurity.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Special Assistant, Media and Public Affairs to the CAN President, Kenny Ashaka, said: “The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has read another divisive and inflammatory statement by Muhammadu Buhari, a retired General, former Head of State and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressives Change, (CPC).

“The retired General was widely reported by several national newspaper correspondents, who monitored the Liberty Radio programme, Guest of the week, to have questioned the “special treatment” given to the Niger-Delta militants by the Federal Government, while the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses destroyed by the government.

“They are different issues. What brought this? It is injustice,” the former Head of State was quoted to have said. I cannot wish away the outburst of harshly critical statements, especially as some of them are directly related to the defence of the Boko Haram sect whose members have continued to kill, maim Christians and burn churches. I feel the pain inflicted on Christians living in the North is too deep for us in CAN to ignore any unsavoury statement that tend to portray innocent Christians, who have been killed by the sect members as the aggressors.

“It is shocking that at a time well-meaning Nigerians are praying for the success of our soldiers, Buhari, rather than reflect the mood of the nation in his statements and conducts is indulging in careless statements without regards for victims of the sect’s violence, who are mostly Christians.”

  • Boko Haram: Arrest Buhari now – Oritsejafor

Boko Haram: Arrest Buhari now – Oritsejafor

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Tuesday expressed sadness over former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari’s support for the Boko Haram sect whom he described as blood sucking group.

According to CAN, Buhari should have advised the sect to stop their ‘evil’ deeds instead of justifying their activities.

The National Leader of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) had recently questioned the “special treatment” given to the Niger-Delta militants by the Federal Government while the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses destroyed by government.

Buhari was quoted to have said: “They (the Niger-Delta militants) were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north were being killed and their houses were being demolished.”

But Oritsejafor disagreed with Buhari’s stand and advised President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately order his arrest as part of efforts to find lasting solution to the crisis.

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kenny Ashaka, the CAN president said “I have several times been vindicated that Boko Haram is not inspired by pecuniary motives, the latest of which is the statement by Robert Fowler, the released former United Nation’s envoy to Niger Republic who said in a BBC programme, “Hard Talk”, aired on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, that his captors never talked of poverty but Islamisation of Africa.

“Spent and defeated politicians with outburst of temper and elders like Buhari who take delight in inflaming religious and ethnic passions should, therefore, be arrested and made to explain some of the issues raised by them. This is why I call for the arrest of Buhari now. Buhari is a big security risk to Nigeria’s cooperate existence.”

  • CPC denies knowledge of Buhari’s 2015 posters

CPC denies knowledge of Buhari’s 2015 posters

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) yesterday denied the posters of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari which adorned strategic places in some parts of the Federal capital territory.

The colour posters printed in A4 bold size is emblazoned with a huge picture of Gen. Buhari campaigning for president in 2015 as the All Progressive Congress candidate. The APC, which is a merger of main opposition parties is still in the process of getting registered.

But National Publicity Secretary of the CPC Mr Rotimi Fashakin, said the posters are the handiwork of the opposition and anti-democratic elements.

He said: “please do not reckon with them. Gen. Buhari is a democrat. He believes a transparent direct primaries should bring up the APC candidate.

“The APC is not like the behemoth called the PDP where anti-democratic ideals like automatic ticket hold sway. Gen. Buhari is not aware of these posters,” he added

According to the posters, General Buhari is the favoured candidate of the opposition come 2015.

The posters came a day to the general meeting of the merging parties’ joint committee meeting and a few days to the expected submission of the Application of the merging parties to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

  • APC will unseat PDP in 2015 –Buhari

APC will unseat PDP in 2015 –Buhari

One of the leading lights of the All Progressive Congress (APC),General Muhammadu Buhari, declared yesterday that the party is now ready to sweep the ruling PDP out of power in 2015.

General Buhari spoke at a rally in Kagoro, a few kilometres from Kafanchan, the political capital of southern Kaduna.

Southern Kaduna is considered by many as the backbone of the PDP in Kaduna State, giving bloc votes to the party since the return to civil rule in 1999.

At yesterday’s rally organised by the Conference of Opposition Political Parties, Gen Buhari assured the people that the APC will emerge winner of the 2015 election, pointing out that the issue of merger of opposition parties to engage the PDP has been on since 2007, championed by people who are determined to save the country from doom.

The former head of state who contested the Presidency on three occasions told the gathering that the coming together of the opposition parties under the All Progressive Congress (APC) is to ensure that the PDP is pushed out of power in 2015.

He said, “the issue of merger has been on since 2007 by people who are serious about saving the Nigerian state. We are coming together to get PDP out of site. This is absolutely necessary because the system needs to be stabilised.

“There is the need for us to come together, go back to our constituencies and save Nigeria democratically. This means that we have to make sure that the system conducts a very credible and free and fair election. And we are going to win the 2015 election.”All that we inherited before 1999 have all gone down the drain. We are hearing of stealing in the country of billions. There is outright theft by the ruling PDP,” Gen. Buhari said.

Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura accused the PDP of using politics of deceit, money, religious bigotry and ethnic manipulation to divide the people for their selfish interest, pointing out that the PDP has brought more pains, hunger and poverty to the citizens of the country.

“We must salvage this country from the PDP. We must seize power from their hands because the PDP is devilish, and we are determined to fight the devil for the betterment of our people. We will uproot the PDP, because it is a party formed on deceit and lies,” he said.

The national leader of the ACN, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who spoke through a former Minister in the Obasanjo government, Alhaji Musa Gwadabe, asked the people to be firm and join the train of change for the rapid development of the country.

Former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nasir el-Rufai and Senate Minority Leader, George Akume said “we shall soon announce the burial of the PDP come 2015. We are determined to ensure that we chase the gang of thieves out. This, we will achieve with our ballot cards come 2015.”

Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibrahim I. Iko, expressed worry about those he said are unfit political leaders who have been allowed to lead the country.

He said, “We have allowed unfit politicians who divide us along religious line, for their personal and selfish interests. APC is a destiny and not a mistake; it must be geared towards saving Nigerians.”

  • Buhari: evolution of APC is for national cohesion

Buhari: evolution of APC is for national cohesion

The leader of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday said that the evolution of All Progressives Congress (APC) was not for personal aggrandisement, but for national cohesion.

He spoke in Zaria, Kaduna State at the inauguration of constituency projects by a member representing Zaria Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Buhari, represented by the CPC Chairman in the state, Alhaji Ahmadu Yaro-Cocacola, said APC, if elected, would foster national unity and restore hope to Nigerians.

He appealed to the electorate to remain humble and peaceful during and after the 2015 general election with a view to electing credible candidates.

Buhari lauded the lawmaker for bringing the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of his people and urged others to emulate him.
