  • Yar’adua group gets thumbs-up for endorsing Buhari

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has hailed the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Political Movement.

Ondo State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Alex Kalejaye, in a statement at the weekend, described the group as “politically versatile and formidable”.

He said, “No doubt, the decision must have been adopted after a deep assessment of the person of the APC presidential candidate; his achievements in less than four years as the President; and his galloping popularity among the unbiased analysts and political observers”.

Kalejaye argued that the unprecedented crowd that so far witnessed in the APC presidential campaigns were clear indicators that the President is going into the election without ‘any threatening contender’.

He said the APC is fully prepared for the elections, “having been able to convince Nigerians, within a short time, that the party and those put forward for elective positions are sincere personalities with unalloyed integrity, who are ready to give their very best for the betterment of the country.

In an earlier press statement, the group had contended that, “while individuals are at liberty to support any candidate of their choice, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Political Movement has already endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari of APC for re-election  in the forthcoming presidential election taking place on the 16th of February 2019.”

  • Clerics canvass for unity worship centres for Muslims, Christians

The National Inter-Faith Religious Organizations for Peace (NIFROP) has called on the Federal Government and well-meaning Nigerians to support the creation of unity worship centres for Muslims and Christians to co-inhabit.
This was part of the resolutions by 100 Inter-faith Clerics following the successful completion of the three-day National Thanksgiving and Salat Al-Shukur in celebration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory.
Nigeria is known to be a very religious nation, dominated by Christian and Islam worshippers but recently came under attacks .
The Nigerian Unity Church  and the Nigerian Unity Masjid for both religions to cement the evolving relationship of love and unity which the clerics have kick-started.
It is on this background that NIFROP has craved for such setting, especially after over 100 clergymen of different religions, denominations and sects in addition to hundreds of faithful took part in the recently concluded thanksgiving and Salat Al- Shukur.
This plea was contained in a communique signed by Bishop Musa Garuba and Sheik Muminu Ibrahim Co-chairmen of NIFROP.
It will be recalled that these clerics had embarked on an intensive 40-day prayer and fast, interceding and prophesying a landslide victory for Buhari.
The victory of President Buhari at the poll necessitated the victory rally. On completion of the three-day National Thanksgiving and Salat Al-Shukur, the highly-revered preachers outlined some observations.
“ Clergymen under NIFROP had previously interceded to God on behalf of Nigeria leading to the revelation that President Buhari is the anointed divine leader who will deepen ongoing reforms in the country. This message was appropriately communicated to Nigerians before the election,” it began.
“ Nigerians, in accordance with God’s will, voted to re-elect President Buhari in the presidential election held on Saturday February 23, 2019.
“ President Buhari’s victory, even though ordained by God, is being challenged by opposition candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who lost the election. Several individuals and organizations have called on Alhaji Abubakar to respect God’s will and drop his challenge of President Buhari’s victory but he has remained adamant.
“ There was need to take proactive steps in preventing ungodly persons from exploiting the religious and sectarian diversity of for selfish political gains.
“ The election was condensed into a contest between the camps of those who, in accordance to the will of God, were committed to fighting corruption and those that want to re-institute corruption as a way of life for Nigerians in clear violation of the divine injunction for people to live honest lives.
Among its resolutions, however, NIFROP vowed to “ continue to hold quarterly interdenominational intercessory prayers for Nigeria and the Government of President Buhari, with special emphasis on requesting God to purge tendency for corruption from the hearts of those that are bent on holding the country hostage.
“ To dissuade Nigerians from further trying to discourage Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the PDP from launching a challenge against their defeat by President Buhari since God does not require human intervention to execute what has been divinely ordained.
“ NIFROP will continue to build a fellowship of unity across religious divides and sensitize Nigerians to overcome those exploiting the religious diversity that exists in the country to cause division and crisis for political gains.
“ Participants will pursue the establishment of: (1) The Nigerian Unity Church and (2) The Nigerian Unity Masjid (Mosque), facilitated by NIFROP to promote unity and love between Nigerians of all faith across the country.
“ The clergy, across religious and sectarian persuasions, should prioritize preaching against corruption. This should expand to the clergy discerning the sources of funds that the faithful donate to places of worship and to reject funds that are known to be proceeds of corruption.”

According to him, the government intends to achieve the ambitious objective by implementing a comprehensive plan that includes developing special economic zones across the country and upgrading existing free trade zones in some parts of the country.

He said “Special Economic Zones have an important role to play in our scheme. Special Economic Zones (SEZ) offer investor- friendly incentives, up-to-date infrastructure and ease of doing business in order to attract local and foreign investment and have been used as a catalyst for rapid and inclusive industrialisation, job creation and diversified export earnings in countries with exemplary development records.

“Under my direct supervision, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment is implementing Project MINE – Made in Nigeria for Exports – as a Presidential special priority intervention using Special Economic Zones to achieve the objectives of: boosting manufacturing’s share of GDP to 20%, generating $30bn in annual export earnings; and creating 1.5 million new jobs all by 2025. In order to achieve these ambitious objectives, we are implementing a comprehensive plan.

“We have set up the Nigeria SEZ Investment Company Limited as a vehicle for participating in Public Private Partnerships involving Federal and State governments and local and foreign private investors. This company will develop new Special Economic Zones all over the country, offering advanced infrastructure and facilities at competitive costs.

“The projects in the pilot phase include Enyimba Economic City, Funtua Cotton Cluster and Lekki Model Industrial Park,”he said.

The President said that the government is reviewing its strategies, to ensure the country succeeds in wooing more investors.

He said: “We are reviewing our incentive framework to ensure competitiveness relative to the other countries with which we are in the race to attract export oriented global manufacturing investment.

“We will extend the early successes we have achieved in Ease of Doing Business to the areas critical to globally competitive export-oriented manufacturing operations.”

President Buhari stated that following the signing of investment agreements, the Nigeria SEZ Investment Company Limited will become fully operational.

He thanked Nigeria’s investment partners; Africa Export and Import Bank (AFREXIM); Africa Finance Corporation (AFC); Bank of Industry (BOI); Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA); and the African Development Bank (AFDB) for their strong demonstrations of support for the important initiative.

In order to promote development, he said, the bank will invest $500 million on the major industrialization projects Afreximbank is implementing in Nigeria.

On his part, the Managing Director of Nigeria’s Bank of Industry, Mr Olukayode Pitan said the signing of the agreements will drive economic growth in Nigeria as well as promote made-in-Nigeria goods.

Highpoint of the event was the signing of the agreements by Afreximbank, Bank of Industry, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and Africa Development Bank.

  • 53 parties endorse Buhari ahead of APC rally in Lagos

..Atiku’s plan a strategy of lies, says Fashola

Ahead of the Saturday mega rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, a coalition of 53 political parties has endorsed the candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the decision was based on the president’s achievements in the last three years.

The coalition, under the banner of Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos State (COPPILS), declared its support for Buhari at an event held in Surulere.

The event was witnessed by the Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, APC’s National Legal Adviser, Babatunde Ogala, the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and lawmaker representing Lagos East in the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa, among others.

Director of Publicity of the coalition, Mallam Shakirudeen Olofin, said the 53 parties had directed their members to work with the APC to deliver Lagos to Buhari, noting that they took the decision to support the APC presidential candidate because of the infrastructure projects of Buhari administration in the Southwest.

According to a communiqué issued by the coalition and signed by its convener, Hon. Akinola Obadia, the APC-led Federal Government had sited more projects in Lagos to consolidate the status of the state as the fastest growing economy in Africa. The coalition said the strides must be sustained for sustainable development.

The communiqué read: “Based on the numerous achievements of the President Buhari in the last three and half years, which include reduction in $5 million importation spending, infrastructure projects on Lagos-Ibadan axis and the flag of Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonsoki-Ojota Expressway, the coalition hereby endorses the candidacy of President Buhari.”

Hailing the decision of parties to support President Buhari’s re-election bid, Fashola said Lagos residents had no choice than to return APC to power. He said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in its 16 years dominance at the centre, left infrastructure in the state to rot, pointing out that the opposition party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had no plan for the country.

Fashola described the PDP presidential candidate’s policy paper as “strategy of lies”, saying Atiku’s plan is impracticable. He said Buhari’s investment in infrastructural renewal was unprecedented, adding that the “Next Level” slogan of the APC was strategically coined in preparation for the projected job creation and economic upswing that would come as dividends of Buhari’s investment in infrastructure.

Sanwo-Olu said Buhari’s achievements in four years could not be compared to PDP’s 16 years in power, saying the APC-led Federal Government had initiated and completed 143 road projects across the nation since 2015. He said Buhari’s victory at the general election must be collective responsibility.

  • Atiku no match for Buhari – APC diaspora

The National Chairman, APC Scandinavia and a member Presidential Campaign Council, Diaspora Directorate, Hon. Ayoola Lawal has said the Presidential Candidate of People Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar is no match for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ayoola statement is in reaction to PANDEF, AFENIFERE, Ohaneze, NEF endorsement of the PDP Presidential candidate.

He also said the PDP has been rigging the presidential election since  2003.

“The question they should be asking themselves is, what is the possibility of winning an election against Buhari, now that they are not in control of the state instruments to perpetuate election rigging?” he said.

“A former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell had revealed in a book co-authored with a former US intelligence expert on Nigeria, Mathew Page, on how Buhari was rigged out in those election years.  He further made it known during an interview on Channels Television`s “Diplomatic Channels” on Monday, October 15, 2018, that he spoke to sources confirmed that those elections were rigged against Buhari in those election years”.

“The Nigeria former Deputy Senate President, Senator Mantu, who claimed to be a born again, also confessed on Channel television on how he normally perpetuates the crime of election rigging in favour of any candidate sponsored by his party, PDP, when they were in power in the past”.

“If Nigerian were to be a sane country that President Buhari is making frantic efforts in transforming it into, most of the politicians across board in Nigeria will be in prison by now, especially the PDP former presidents and leaders for their orchestrated crimes of senseless looting of our commonwealth and elections rigging in the nation”.

“Even the former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who claimed to be a saint elder statesman, is now exposed as not being the person he claimed to be. No matter who endorses Atiku as the next president of Nigeria, Nigerians are now wiser. Atiku, endorsers and his party, PDP, should rest assured that there is no vacancy in Aso-rock at least in 2019-2023”.

  • Why Falae resigned as our chairman, by SDP

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Chief Olu Falae resigned as chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Friday because of old age.

The Director, Media & Publicity of SDP, Yemi Akinbode, said his resignation was not new to the leadership of the party.

His resignation came hours after the party leaders adopted All Progressives Congress (APC)’s President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the February 16 presidential election.

Falae stated in his resignation letter that his ailing health is part of the reasons for his resignation.

But Akinbode said Falae was part of the party leadership that adopted Buhari as SDP’s presidential candidate.

He said: “He stepped down as chairman of the party. He ought to have stepped down on September 31, 2018.

“That was when he clocked 80 years of age. But I do not know what caused the delay.

“He had earlier made it known that when he clocks 80 he will quit politics. It is not a new thing.

“I feel that he was trying to wait after the election tactically to quit. But he did that now. And he cannot deny the adoption of President Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the SDP because he was part of the entire process.

  • Only God can punish PDP for looting Nigeria- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said that only God will punish the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for looting the country dry.

The PDP was in power for 16 years in the country before the All Progressives Congress (APC) came into office in 2015.

Meeting with local and international support groups at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President said that those proven to be corrupt will be prosecuted.

He said that their properties would be confiscated and sold while the money realised would be put into the treasury for public use.

“We have said properties confiscated should be sold and the money put into treasury and we will use.”

He said when he assumed office, he approached Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) who told him there was no money in federal treasury.

He also noted there was no infrastructure or any developmental achievements to justify draining of the substantial earnings from crude oil.

“I have said this for the umpteenth time and I have challenged them to prove me wrong but in those 16 years of PDP rule, Nigeria was getting 2.1 million times 100 (2.1 million barrels by $100 per barrel) every day, every week but when we came on board, the price fell to between $37-38 and hung around $40-$50.

“I went to the Central Bank of Nigeria, and asked him for money and he said there was no money.”

The last time roads rehabilitation, he said, was under General Sani Abacha, when he served as Chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund, stressing that the roads where rehabilitated up to the east.

Speaking on his integrity, Buhari said: “If I didn’t stick to my principle of accountability I would have been in trouble by now and I have no regrets.

“Everybody wants to be comfortable but the most important thing is to live within your means and bear the consequence.”

On why he visited the neighboring countries shortly after he was sworn in, he said: “If you don’t establish good relations with your neighbours you will spend more on security.”

The leader of the delegation, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed, said the groups supported him because of his integrity and commitment.

He said for the first time in the history of campaigns, they were campaigning with meager funds generated from well -wishers because the president specifically directed that no money from the public funds should be spent on his campaign.

He said: “From tomorrow we will not sleep. We still start house- to- house, shop- to- shop and market- to- market campaign to ensure your victory.

  • Nigeria Airways ex-workers stage rally for Buhari’s reelection

The Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on Friday came alive as ex-workers of Nigeria Airways Limited staged a mega rally to support the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb. 16 Presidential Election.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the pensioners and ex-workers of the defunct national carrier declared their support for the president for paying N22. 6 billion as part payment of their entitlements in October 2018.

The pensioners, who turned out in their numbers, moved from the premises of the Skypower Catering Services through the airport environment chanting “Sai Baba” and “Next Level”, to publicly show their support for Buhari.

Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Airways ex-workers, Mr Lukman Animashaun said the rally was to show appreciation to the president who came to their rescue after many years of neglect by previous administrations.

He said : “Words are not enough to express the profound gratitude of the over 6,000 pensioners and ex-workers of Nigeria Airways to Buhari for his timely intervention in the payment of our benefits.

“For 14 years, we were abandoned, humiliated and frustrated in our demand to be paid what was due to us by successive governments, whose stock in trade was tissues of lies designed to hoodwink the public.

“In the process, about 800 of our members lost their lives.

“But today, PMB has wiped out our tears, put smiles on our faces and restored hope to our members and their families with the part payment of our benefits.”

According to him, the ex-workers of Nigeria Airways are optimistic that Buhari will pay the outstanding balance soon as promised.

Also, Mr Sam Nzene, National Chairman, Nigeria Airways Pensioners, told NAN that the former staff and their families would cast their vote for Buhari because it was the right thing to do.

“This is a man who saved us, who brought smiles to our faces, who rescued our families when others refused to show concern.

“He did promise that he will do it and he actually did it by paying part payment of our benefits that have not been paid for over 14 years.

“So we decided to show gratitude to him by organising this rally because one good turn deserves another.

“We have decided that we and our families will vote for him. We want to tell Nigerians to vote for him because he is a man with a kind heart,” Nzene said.

He said the outstanding payment of their entitlements was already captured in the 2019 budget, which was a clear demonstration that the money would soon be disbursed to the beneficiaries.

NAN reports that the former national carrier was liquidated in 2004 by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration, but the workers were not paid their severance packages as stipulated in extant labour laws.

The workers were paid a fraction of their entitlements by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s regime in 2008 before Buhari approved the part payment of N22. 6 billion to them.

The government has also promised to pay the other half of the money to them as soon as funds are available.

  • SDP endorses Buhari as Ezekwesili’s group adopts Atiku

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate President Muhammadu Buhari and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenger Atiku Abubakar yesterday got support.

President Buhari was adopted by the Social Democratic (SDP) and the Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili-led civil society group, the Red Card Movement (RCM) pledged allegiance to the former vice president.

The SDP adoption of Buhari took place in Abuja after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where a communique was issued and adopted by council members who were at the meeting.

The party’s NEC explained why it took the decision.

It National Chairman Chief Olu Falae was absent.

The communique read by the SDP National Vice Chairman Abdul Ahmed Ishaq said: “It is in view of all this that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the SDP has resolved to adopt President Mohammadu Buhari and Vice Presidential candidate Prof. Yemi Osibanjo of the APC as candidates of the party for the 2019 presidential election.

“Consequently, all members of the party are hereby enjoined to vote for President Buhari of the APC at the presidential election coming up on Saturday 16 February 2019.

“The NEC noted and expressed happiness that the party’s candidates for various offices namely the State Houses of Assembly, the House of Representatives, the Senate and governorship offices are campaigning vigorously nationwide and their presence and impacts are being felt everywhere.

“NEC calls on all our candidates throughout the country not to relent but must work even harder as we approach the finishing line. NEC also promised to support our candidates in every way possible to ensure their decisive victory at the polls.

“The NEC also, expressed regret that since the end of the National Convention of the party held in Abuja on  October 6, 2018 and the emergence of Donald Duke as the presidential candidate, the party has been enmeshed in litigations which have significantly sapped our energy. time and resources.

“With less than ten days before the Presidential election, our great party is caught up in a web with very little room for manoeuver. The options before us at this critical juncture are limited: we either realign our forces or we loose out completely

“Whatever the dangers and demerits of political alignments, it is far better than to go on alone at this point as it will, in the end, disenfranchise our members. With the multitude of parties in the race for the crucial Presidency of the country, it has become imperative for engagements and strategic collaboration between and among parties that are strongly committed to the Nigerian ideal so that the future of our great country is not doomed.

“A number of political parties have approached the SDP for collaboration during the forthcoming elections. However, after extensive deliberations, NEC noted that the party that comes close to and nearly shares the social democratic and progressive ideals and values of the SDP is the APC.

“After further weighing the options and reviewing the political situation in the country, NEC was convinced that with the SDP and the APC working together.”

At the NEC meeting were Prof. Tunde Adeniran National (Vice Chairman, South), Prof. Rufia Alkali (Deputy (National Vice Chairman, Northeast), Emeka Atuma (National Organising Secretary) and Shehu Gabam (National Secretary).

The RCM adoption of the PDP candidate was a departure from the group’s initial position under Ezekwesili whereby it issued a Red Card to the PDP and the ruling APC.

Ezekwesili resigned from the group to contest the presidential election on the platform of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) but withdrew from the race a few days ago.

At a public declaration in Abuja yesterday, RCM’s co-Chairman, Dr. Tony Akabuno, said the decision to endorse Atiku was informed by the failure of the APC to fulfill its campaign promises to Nigerians.

“We have come today to tell the world and our members, that the state champions, the co-chair (Dr.Tony Akabuno) and other co-conveners have dissociated from Oby Ezekwesili and today declare support for the Atiku/ Obi ticket,” he said.

  • I’ll complete Mambilla hydropower project, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday promised to complete the Mambilla Hydropower project and open up Taraba State for investors, if he is re-elected.

Doing so, he noted, will stimulate investors’ interest in the enormous natural resources waiting to be tapped for development in the state.

Buhari spoke at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital while campaigning for his re-election and the election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the National Assembly, governorship and House Assembly elections.

It was at the presidential and governorship rally in Jalingo – the Taraba State capital.

“The Mambilla Hydropower Project is the main project that will bring accelerated development in your State; it will generate enough electricity for you to do businesses and improve your living standard. I will complete it, if you re-elect me,” he said.

Buhari, who acknowledged Taraba as an agrarian state, promised to tackle poverty and enhance Taraba farmers’s access to fertilizer at subsidised rate during cropping seasons.

“We will also construct a railway line from Benue to Taraba up to Borno State to ease the movement of goods and farm produce. We would ensure that the state is open to enormous development,” the President said.

He disclosed that he would continue his fight corruption and will make sure he fights Boko Haram to finish.

The President said: “No religion permits corruption, violence and injustice.”

APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, described Buhari as the best man for the job among the 73 presidential candidates.

According to him, the PDP had died and decayed since 2015 and should not be expected to resurrect at the polls.

He said: “PDP will fail. They had fallen and they died in sin. The Bible tells us that he who perishes in sin shall never resurrect.”

Some of the defectors received by the APC chair received include: Emmanuel Bello (former Public Affairs aide to Governor Darius Ishaku), Abba Akawu, (former commissioner of Poverty Alleviation) and Emmanuel George (former Special Adviser to the governor on Youths Development).

Sani Abubakar Danladi, who is the Taraba APC standard bearer, called on the people to come out en masse and vote for Buhari on February 16.

“Taraba is APC, and Buhari and I are going to win Taraba,” Danladi said. He urged President Buhari to “provide enough security at the polls, to ensure the election is not rigged.”

In Yola, the Adamawa State capital, President Buhari vowed to continue the fight against corruption, promising that all cases of corruption will be prosecuted without sparing anybody no matter how highly-placed.

He was welcomed by a huge crowd of party supporters who thronged the Mahmud Ribadu Square in Jimeta. According to him, all looted funds will be recovered and returned to government treasury for the public good.

Oshiomhole urged the people of Adamawa State to vote for Buhari for what he had done for them and not their kinsman, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who he alleged did little or nothing for the state while he held the sway as vice president.

“Let’s move away from the consideration of where people come from to what they have done for the people they have been responsible for,” Oshiomhole told the crowd.

He added:  “Ask Atiku what he did for you when he was the vice president between 1999 and 2007.

“Atiku succeeded only in helping himself, that he built an expensive university, a large beverage manufacturing company, a radio/TV outfit, other companies and several houses, all for himself but did not extend the borehole serving his residence even to his next door neighbour.”

He told the people to compare such a person with President Buhari, who he said had built and is building more roads across Adamawa State in less than four years that he has been President than Atiku might even have thought of doing in the eight years he was in power as the vice president.

A highlight of the presidential rally was the presentation of APC flags to many flagbearers of the party, including Governor Mohammed Bindow, his deputy, Babale Martins, who are seeking re-election.

Bindow lauded President Buhari for his role in the restoration of peace in the state by fighting insurgency
