  • Buhari unveils CBN project at UNEC

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday inaugurated the Post-Graduate Centre of Excellence at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC) constructed and donated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

President Buhari lauded the apex bank for making huge investments for the overall development of the country.

Speaking shortly before he unveiled the commemorative plaque and cut the ceremonial tape to formally inaugurate the building, he said the construction of the project by the CBN had also underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to provide a conducive environment for learning at all levels of education.

The President said his administration placed premium on education to ensure, among other things, its affordability, stressing that education remained the bedrock of societal progress.

While stressing that the Federal Government would not rest on its oars in boosting the quality of education, he urged the CBN to go beyond providing physical infrastructure to the university to increasing partnership with the institution in terms of funding support.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele disclosed that the aim of the bank, being a knowledge-based and visionary institution, was to build human capacity for the financial system in particular and the economy in general.

He added that the project was mainly to ensure that students at post-graduate levels in Economics, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration and Statistics study in a serene environment that would stimulate effective learning with a view to building human capacity for the financial services sub-sector.

He disclosed that the project, which was the product of a N10 billion Endowment Fund instituted in 2006 that has grown to over N23 billion, also aimed at checking brain drain as well a strain on the country’s foreign reserve used for funding educational pursuits abroad.

  • Keyamo: why Nigerians must vote for Buhari

The Director of Strategic Communications, All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, said Nigerians must vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in next month’s election because he has delivered on his promises.

Keyamo, who spoke at the launch of APC’s Next Level in Ghana, said the Buhari administration had surpassed expectations, as it awarded N58 billion contract for the dualisation of the Calabar-Itu Road, as well as the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement, Keyamo also listed the ongoing construction of the second Niger Bridge, the implementation of school feeding programme across Nigeria, employment of cooks and food suppliers, feeding millions of children daily, among others, as some of the achievements of President Buhari.

He said under the PMB’s N-power, millions of unemployed graduates were paid N30,000 each every month, in addition to the prosecution of corrupt government officials by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The launch was chaired by the APC Ghana Chapter Chairman, Mr. Charles Micheletti, who urged Nigerians to re-elect President Buhari.

At the event was the Personal Assistant to the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Alhaji Yayah Ibrahim, among others.

  • Looted funds must be repatriated, Buhari insists

*Says PDP government wasted Nigerian resources

    *Promises more resources for education

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday assured that his administration will continue to persuade other countries to repatriate stolen funds and assets from Nigerian.

He made the promise while speaking during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential campaign at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu State.

He said, “Whoever is caught, we will persuade the governments to bring back the money and we will invest it in infrastructures.”

Stressing that handling corruption in Nigeria under democracy is very difficult, he said that he is doing his best under the rule of law.

Noting that he doesn’t have new promises to make, he said that his administration has honestly made progress with the promises made in 2015.

The President recalled how the People’s Democratic Party wasted the resources that accrued to the nation for sixteen years.

According to him, more money would have to be devoted to education as one of the best ways to solve the problems of Nigeria.

He said that his administration has made progress in agriculture as many Nigerians are now eating Nigerian rice, with Nigerian farmers prospering from it.

The President also pointed out that if roads, railway lines and power are developed, Nigerians will focus on their businesses and won’t even mind who is ruling at the centre.

“Let us work hard to develop our resources.” he stated

The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole said that it was important to give President Buhari another four years in other to continue the good work he started.

He said that those shouting rigging are the investors of rigging

Oshiomhole, who noted that Obasanjo is at the forefront of those shouting rigging, said that he has never won any election in the South West part of the country that he came from.

He said that anybody who believes in Buhari should also vote for other APC candidates in the state.

Oshiomhole said that it would amount to anti-party activities for anyone to say ‘vote for Mr. President this way and vote for others that way”

Enugu State, he said, is not the birthright of any political party and that it is already tired of the opposition party.

The President’s records and achievements, he said, are already speaking in his favour.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed to the crowd that the government at its next meeting will approve railway project from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, which will also benefit the state.

He also told them that the fastest route for the South East to rule the country is by voting for another four years for President Buhari, pointing out that Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not leave the stage after four years if voted in as President.

  • Ethiopian Airlines moves operations to Abuja new terminal

Ethiopian Airlines, the largest African airline, on Thursday, moved its operations to the newly inaugurated terminal building at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, constructed by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Ethiopian Airlines is the second international airline to move its operations to the new terminal, inaugurated on Dec. 20, 2018, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Asky Airlines was the first to start flight operations from the terminal on Jan. 6.

Mr Sani Mahmud, the Regional Manager, North Central, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said that the terminal had been equipped to handle all the international carriers.

Mahmud, who is also the Airport Manager of NAIA, said that the terminal had been equipped with fibre backbone to provide free internet services to passengers and airport users.

He expressed optimism that other airlines such as Emirates, Lufthansa, Egypt Air and British Airways would
likely move their operations into the terminal in the not too distant future.

The regional manager said that the issue of connectivity had been the reason given by some airlines for the
delay in moving their operations to the terminal.

He, however, added that “we feel great that the terminal has come alive after it was commissioned last year
and one of the biggest airlines, Ethiopian Airlines has moved its operations into the terminal.

“We are grateful for their cooperation and we hope that very soon, others will join.

“When we have these two giants here, others will be eager to come.

“Hopefully, all the airlines will come in within a week because the connections have been done. The duty free shops are in progress because the management wants a uniform-style that will be of international standard and we are ready to provide world class services here.”

Meanwhile, the Traffic and Sales Manager of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Tilahun Tedesse, said that the airline was determined to continue to champion air transport services in Nigeria.

Tedesse said that the airline hoped to expand its operations, considering the space and facilities in the new terminal,
adding that it currently operated about 100 routes from Abuja.

He added that “we just started today in this new terminal and we will continue to be an example to other airlines.

“If you remember the last time this airport was closed we moved to Kaduna to serve Nigerian people and Nigerian passengers and this time also, we have been asked to start using this facility and we have started today.

“Asky is our partner and we asked them to start first, but we are the first to commence international long haul from here to connect our passengers to Asia, Europe and America.

“We didn’t have a good space at the old terminal but here, we have enough space, many check-in counters and the air conditioner is perfect.

“We usually deploy our big capacity aircraft to this airport when we were using the small space, but now, I believe we will be able to deploy aircraft like the Airbus and B777 series.”

A passenger, Dr Ayodeji Samuels, a medical practitioner, commended the government for the new terminal, saying it was befitting for the seat of power like Abuja.

Samuels urged the authority to provide adequate signage and self-service facility within the terminal to enable passengers to have seamless experience.

“This is more befitting for the Federal Capital Territory than what we used to have and we hope that operations will go on smoothly and most importantly, this improvement should be maintained.

“It would be good to have appropriate signage to direct passengers where exactly they should go and there should also be self-service kiosks where passengers can check themselves in before approaching the counter for boarding pass.

  • Onnoghen: Buhari orchestrating destruction of democracy, says Secondus

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus has accused the Federal Government of orchestrating the destruction of the nation’s democracy.

This, according to the party chairman, was part of the “nefarious” agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig the February presidential election.

Secondus, who was reacting to the arraignment of the Justice Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, said that the President and his team were arm twisting the Tribunal to force the CJN out of office.

In a statement Wednesday by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, the PDP chair said the APC was afraid that an independent Judiciary will obstruct its rigging plan.

He described the reported by the government on the CJN to vacate his seat as provocative, saying that it has left no one, including the global democracies in doubt that indeed democratic rule has been suspended in Nigeria to pave way for dictatorship.

“The blackmail, the frame up and the orchestration of fictitious figures in the CJN’s bank accounts by the government and their agents are all deliberate ploy to destroy the envious career of a man because of desperation for power

“What they are trying to do is not only illegal but a recipe for anarchy and breakdown of rule of law and must be vehemently resisted”, the party chair said.

Secondus said it’s now very glaring that President Buhari and his ruling APC have concluded plans to plunge the country into a major crisis in frustration for their apparent inevitable rejection by Nigerians.

He noted that trying to force the head of an arm of government out of office without following the clearly laid down procedures amounted to breach of rules and an invitation to major national crisis.

The party chair urged the CJN to disregard calls for his resignation and remain in office as the constitution guiding the operations of government is very clear on how he can be removed.

“President Buhari’s inclination to non-democratic behavour is now apparent as he moves to muscle all other arms of government as well as ingredients of democracy”, he added.

  • Buhari renews pledge to boost economy, fight graft

ALL Progressives Congress  (APC) leaders yesterday took their message of hope and better future for the country to Sokoto State. They were led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was at the party’s presidential campaign rally at the Giginya Township Stadium in Sokoto, the state capital.

At the rally were APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s Presidential Campaign Council Co-Chairman Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a leader of the party in the state, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

They were received by a mammoth crowd of supporters who thronged the stadium.

President Buhari renewed his promise to strengthen the economy, fight corruption and guarantee security.

The President, who arrived at the stadium amidst cheers, promised to re-engineer the machinery of governance to make life more comfortable for all, especially, by boosting agriculture.

According to him, farmers now enjoy better yield through the government responsive patronage and investments in agriculture programmes.

“It has afforded a number of them the legitimate means of responding to their financial needs and sustained food security,” the President said.

He explained that insecurity, particularly in Borno and Yobe states, and the entire Northeast, was being tackled with appreciable successes.

“We are doing our best and Borno people can testify to that,” Buhari added.

Acknowledging the efforts of Senator Aliyu Wamakko in uniting the party in the state, the President pointed out that his administration was doing everything possible in  fighting corruption, adding that “we are not relenting and any one established to be guilty will face appropriate penalty”.

Tinubu told the audience about President Buhari’s and the APC’s determination to make Nigeria a better place for all.

According to the former Lagos State governor, Buhari has always been the best and trusted candidate to steer the ship of governance at the centre.

Tinubu said: “He (Buhari) has the moral character, honesty and zeal to move the country to the ‘Next Level’ of prosperity.

“Farmers in Nigeria have never had it good like under this APC government, being led by Buhari. I am convinced that Nigerians will vote for him to move the country in the right direction.”

Oshiomhole said Nigerians were ready to give their votes to Buhari who he described as “a man of the people” with national acceptance across the states.

According to Oshiomhole, “that is why we are behind the voice of the people to ensure his re-election”.

On the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) outcry over alleged plot to rig election, Oshiomhloe reassured that APC’s grand support was enough to send a signal to the opposition.

He said: “It is clear that since their defeat in 2015, the PDP has lost ground and the machinery of rigging, which they were used to, hence the allegations.”

Presidential Campaign Council’s Director-General and Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi explained the need renew the President’s mandate, saying that doing so will put the country on the right pedestal of good governance that would ensure the transformation of the  economy.

The former Rivers State governor announced that a blueprint was being developed for the implementation of the concluded rail lines designed to link Jibia- Gusau- Sokoto and Kebbi.

In his welcome address, the party chairman in the state, Sadiq Isah Achida, told the rally that the love for the President and the APC by Sokoto people remained unprecedented, describing the coming of Buhari as a home visit and not one for soliciting votes.

He spoke of the Sokoto business community’s plea for the President to approve the reopening of the Illela border, as they were willing to pay duties.

Wamakko, who doubles as the Northern Senators’ Forum Chairman, assured the President of the resilience of Sokoto people whom he said were ready to vote Buhari and all APC candidates.

Also at the rally were: Interior Minister Abdulrahman Danbazau, Minister of State,Trade & Investment, Aisha Abubakar; Zamfar State Governor Abdulaziz Yari; Senators Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura; Senators Ali Modu Sherif and Abubakar Umar Gada.

The campaign team also stopped over in Birni Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.

  • Buhari, Tinubu for Ebonyi campaign kick off

President Muhammadu Buhari, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole will lead other stalwarts to Ebonyi State on January 30 to kick off the party’s campaign.

The campaign is scheduled to hold at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki.

The governorship candidate, Senator Sonni Ogbuoji, said the campaign would be an opportunity for Ebonyi people to know his plans to liberate the state from the stranglehold of the purveyors of poverty and underdevelopment.

He said: “I am on a liberation mission in Ebonyi State. I have always believed that public officers should work with the people to enthrone a collective sense of common purpose and direction for the benefit of all.

“This belief has not changed, instead it has been strengthened over the years, necessitating my desire to serve the people. For these people to come to support our campaign, despite their tight schedule, shows how significant the event is for the party.

“Ebonyi people should rest assured that the governance of prosperity and progress, which APC is bringing to the state, will reach everybody. We will ensure that our youths are sufficiently empowered and taken off the streets – the era of Ebonyi street hawkers will be a thing of the past when APC takes over in May.”

  • Buhari – Symbolic leader for the ages

Every now and then, there comes a critical point in the life of a nation where the train of national progress need to course correct or negotiate tactical bends, though deleterious yet necessary. During these uncommon times, ordinary leaders are not sufficient. Leaders that speak well, talk a good game, have room full of certificates or command fair share of loyal followers are not by themselves sufficient.

    Critical periods require symbolic leaders.

Such was the case with South Africa when the curtains of Apartheid were being drawn, and the transition to become the most liberal multi-racial democracy not just in Africa but in the world- became not only apparent but necessary. Nelson Mandela, taking the mantle after age and suffering had taken its toll at a rich age of 76 until he was 81, provided a rich symbolism for the new era of freedom. That symbolism kept reactionary forces even within his own party at bay, as the foundations of a reconciled instead of a bitter society was laid under the steady and studious philosophical leadership of Nelson Mandela.

Of course, not without the consternation of younger and headier forces whose subsequent leadership we all now question. Yes, Mandela was old. Yes, he was not energetic. Yes, he was not vengeful. Yes he was not your best of economist and administrator. He didn’t exude theories of development and the path to constitutional architecture like an Obafemi Awolowo.

But he provided South Africa the right dosage of symbolism and guardianship in that delicate period.

Is that perhaps what President Buhari is providing?

In places farther ashore, examples of symbolic leadership existed and are equally profound. In the United States, older and much frailer Ronald Reagan was at the helm in the 80s especially after he was shot merely two years into his presidency. We now learn he was even losing his memory. He once referred to the late Liberian President, Samuel Doe as Samuel Moe. He once slipped; he once tripped climbing or descending stairs. How many people of that age could work with a gait similar to a 40-year old?

Yet, the Reagan revolution proceeded under the steady guardianship of the actor turned president. Despite his memory losses, one could count on the gentle resoluteness and sunniness of Ronald Reagan that “America’s best days are ahead of her” and that “It is a new morning in America!” He once made that statement that signal the collapse of authoritarian Soviet Union: “Mr Gobarchev, tear down this wall”. That was during a visit to then West Germany when he looked at the wall separating the West from the East and proclaimed enough was enough. No one could have said that better, no one could have made that reverberate that loudly and effectively across the world like Reagan – memory loss or no memory loss.

He is our symbol of integrity, contentedness, and uncommon patriotism. This, his arch-enemies, will not deny.

When we hear Buhari say, “I cannot be frustrated”, we hear resoluteness and determination of symbolic leadership that harkens back to the same!

Symbolic leadership requires a towering leader of unquestionable character and determination, whom despite the cross of age and experience – God has imbued with the rare privilege of leadership at a relatively old age to steer the ship of state at delicate times. Do we really think we need sweet talkers to fix Nigeria after the treasury was looted dry by the same folks in 16 years? Who sweet talk epp?, to use a local jingo.

Buhari, after this onerous assignment will be consecrated into the pantheon of Mahatma Ghandi, Pandit Nehru, and Mrs Ghandi. He will be ranked among the likes of Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Charles de Gaulle of France, General Kemal Ataturk of Turkey, Josip Bros Tito of Yugoslavia and Trudeau of Canada. This is a class of honour, of individuals who lived in the heart of their country men and women not for their wealth, not for their oratory not because they are saints but because the majority see them as one.

What Nigeria needed, needs and desires is a symbolic leadership to point us to the next trajectory of growth and progress, not sweet talk us to the path of perdition!

In the next few weeks, Nigerians will head to the polls to make a choice. That choice will be broad, deep and all-encompassing. There will be 72 candidates to choose from, to assume the mantle of leading the nation: not as a commander or ruler, but as a father/mother and leader. Leadership first and foremost is about symbolism. Would we choose the symbols of the past filled with looting and kleptomaniac craze, or will Nigerians vote to keep the symbol of probity, steady performance and Spartan pragmatism in place?

The future for Nigerians will be up to us much as the future was up to Malaysians when they chose their own symbol last year. That symbol was a 92-year old Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in May, 2018. Shock as it might have been, Malaysians decidedly voted to install a symbol of pragmatic performance – the erstwhile hallmark of their beautiful country- over the effigy of corrupt present.

Nigerians would too. They understand the symbolism of Buhari’s presidency. And if it has not dawned on the opposition, a president that leads with resoluteness and probity, symbolizes the future Nigerians desire and such is the future that they will elect come February 16.
