As he turns an octogenarian, President Buhari believes Alabo Toby’s wealth of experience in public and private sectors remains invaluable to the nation.

Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, urged him to stay active in pursuing his life-long dream of seeing a strong, peaceful and prosperous nation.

The President rejoiceds with all family members, friends and political associates of the former deputy governor, praying that God will grant him good health and strength to continue in the service of humanity.

  • Secondus to APC: Don’t kill Buhari with undue pressure

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has warned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to kill President Muhammadu Buhari with undue electioneering campaign pressure.

Secondus accused those he described as power grabbers in the ruling party of putting undue pressure on the President for selfish reasons, even as it’s evident that he can no longer cope.

The PDP chairman spoke in Abuja on Friday while inaugurating the party’s 27 presidential election campaign committees at the party’s campaign office.

Secondus said with what Nigerians and the international community are witnessing around the President lately, it’s apparent that he is tired and incapacitated but they would not let him be.

“There is no way this President can cope given what we are witnessing, added to this is the incompetence in leadership Nigerians have been seeing in the last three years”, the party chairman said.

Prince Secondus warned that Nigerians are not ready to take anything less than free, fair and credible poll in the upcoming elections.

He said, “Our fear is that the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu lacks the will and courage to ignore the pressure from the APC to conduct free and transparent election.

“But he should know that he would be held responsible for any fall out from a rigged election”.

The opposition party chairman reiterated his call on the new Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to clear the mess left behind by his predecessor by running a professional and responsible police force.

Prince Secondus also explained why the PDP would continue to protest the membership of Mrs Amina Zakari as a National Commissioner in INEC.

Restating the call for Zakari’s resignation, the party chair said the PDP would continue to oppose her continued stay at the electoral body because she is a “master rigger”, adding, “we have evidence of what she did in Ekiti and Osun states.

He announced that the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was in the United States, meeting with top American politicians and government officials.

Secondus said the visit has doused the blackmail against the party’s presidential candidate, stressing that if elected, an Atiku Presidency would restore the battered image of the country.

The party chairman charged members of the PDP presidential campaign committees to give their all to the job, saying that the party’s reward system now gives prime attention to electoral performance at the grassroots.

  • Farmers/herders clashes: Buhari committed to finding lasting solutions

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja appealed for accommodation and tolerance among cattle herders and farmers throughout the country.

Speaking at the State House while receiving the leaders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), on a courtesy visit, the President appealed for calm among all citizens, saying that his government will give equal respect to all citizens irrespective of their ethnic, religious and geopolitical backgrounds.

Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said “I appeal to all farmers and herders for restraint, mutual respect and tolerance for one another as people destined to live together in this great country.

“I appeal for patience and understanding as the administration works towards lasting solutions to these conflicts.” he said

He also urged the herders to support him in the task of bringing lasting peace to the country.

The President called on state governors to work with the Minister of Agriculture, who he said, had been mandated to work out a solution with the states by which herders will have access to water for their livestock, and farmers will have security against destruction of their farmlands.

Attributing part of the conflict between the two groups to the climate change phenomenon and population explosion, he regretted that its politicization by selfish individuals who did not mean well for the country did not also help matters.

He emphasized that the conflict was neither religious nor ethnic, but one that his administration has foreseen and warned about.

He said, “Before the Benue and Taraba crises, I called the Minister of Agriculture and the Governor of Central Bank and asked them to work with the state governors on rediscovering the gazetted cattle routes, clear of farmlands that had made for peace during the First Republic.”

President Buhari expressed strong confidence that a way around the problem will be found, working with the states which have an important role to play in finding a lasting solution.

“Whatever it will take, I am determined to bring peace between farmers and herders. I urge you all to be patient and exercise restraint while we are working for an enduring solution,” he said.

MACBAN, led by Alhaji Mohammed Kiruwa, informed the President that the 20-million strong body had sent the delegation to endorse his bid for a second term of office on account of the administration’s achievements in office which included, the successful clampdown on kidnapping and cattle rustling; and the fight against terrorism and corrupt elements in the society.

Alhaji Kiruwa said President Buhari’s personal qualities of honesty, integrity and his unparalleled commitment to the unity and progress of the nation, also informed his association’s support for a renewal of his tenure.

  • ‘Buhari’ll win 95 percent of Southwest votes’

A group of grassroots farmers, artisans, politicians, non-politicians, traders, religious leaders, community leaders, youths, market men and women from the Southwest have assured not less than 90 or 95 percent of total votes in the region will be for President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group christened ‘Southwest Frontiers For Buhari 2019’ said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has no moral ground to condemn the Buhari’s administration for correcting years of PDP’s misrule.

Speaking after an executive meeting of the group at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, it noted the less than four years of the APC has proved to the whole world the “misgovernance, misrule and plundering of the nation’s treasury, perpetrated by the PDP in their 16 years of being in power.”

The group, however, added said another four years for Buhari was required to nail corruption and set the nation on the right path.

Southwest Coordinator of the group Mr. Ayodele Joseph told reporters the Frontier will battle the PDP in the forthcoming elections because of confidence in the efforts of President Buhari.

Ayodele appealed to leadership of the ruling APC in the Southwest to cooperate with the group because of the makeup of its members, which he said also included non-card-carrying members of the APC.

Explaining the strategy to achieve the massive vote for Buhari’s victory, the National Public Relations Officer, Prince Omowunmi Samuel said the group is structured to have coordinators at the state, local government, wards and voting unit levels.

He said the group with at least 50 members at the unit level has embarked on aggressive door-to-door campaign to enlighten the people on the various efforts of Buhari to ensure its reelection.

Maadi, disclosed that the leadership of the party across the country endorsed President Buhari for second term on the 4th of January, 2019.

Recalling that the party was formed by late Shehu Musa Yar’ Adua in 1987, he said that the PDM decided to endorse the President because of his giant strides in the development of the country, especially in the fight against corruption, successes against Boko Haram and improved power supply, among other achievements.

At the meeting, the former National Chairman of PDM, Faruk Abdullaziz presented to Buhari, the signature of all the 36 states executives of the party endorsing the President for second term.

  • Buhari’s visit: Police deploy 1,711 officers in Niger

The Police Command in Niger had deployed 1, 711 security officers to provide adequate security before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s one day official visit to the state.

The President’s official visit to Niger is billed for Saturday Jan. 19.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Dibal Yakadi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Friday.

Yakadi said that an effective operational order on how to provide security at each of the places that the President was expected to visit had since been issued to the officers deployed for that purpose.

He said that President Buhari was expected to inaugurate the Baro River Port, Presidential Lodge at Baro in Agaie Local Government Area , as well as launch the All Progressives Congress ( APC), Presidential Campaign rally at the Trade Fair Complex in the metropolis.

He said that the command had taken concrete security measures to ensure a peaceful visit.

” We have since embarked on “Operation Show Force” with other security agencies to show our preparedness for the August visitor.

He said that the police would not fold their hands and watch any politician or group of youths carry arms before, during and after the visit.

Yakadi added that the command had been proactive in responding to emergency calls across the state at all times.

” I wish to also solicit the cooperation of the public through the provision of timely and useful information to all divisions of the command across the state with a view to helping us respond to distress calls on time,’ he said.

  • Buhari to Niger Delta: expect more development

Thousands of supporters and ordinary folks were cheering yesterday as President Muhammadu Buhari led members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to the Niger Delta. The campaign train stopped over in Warri, Delta State and Benin, Edo State.

He assured the people that his promise to develop the region would continue to receive serious attention.

The President, who gave the assurance at the Warri Township Stadium during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign/ mega rally for the party’s candidates in Delta State, said his administration’s fight against corruption would receive more serious steam if re-elected next month.

Coming as the last speaker at the event, which saw a massive turnout of people from various  parts of the state, Buhari noted that his administration will continue to give attention to issues of security and economy, noting that security would allow for a proper management of resources and in return give room for a thriving economy.

He said: “I assure you, the fundamental objectives we have identified and campaigned on in 2015 are still relevant; the country has to be secured to be properly managed and proper management means doing well in the economy. We have a young population, most of them unemployed, this is of great concern.

“We have turned to agriculture and industry. Massively, God has helped us with raining seasons,  especially the last two, and we have virtually been able to achieve food security as a nation. A lot of young people have been mobilised and they have gone back to land and they haven’t regretted it.

“In the fight against corruption, I assure you that all those who have fraudulently enriched themselves when they were entrusted with public funds, we will eventually get them and deal with them. We are doing it, we will continue to do it and I assure you, we will not abuse your trust.

“I assure you that the programme mentioned here about the development of the Niger Delta will be taken even more seriously. I expect you to please cooperate and vote APC from top to the bottom.”

Others who spoke at the event assured the President of getting his winning figures from Delta State and the other parts of the Niger Delta region.

Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, said: “Don’t sleep on that day because if you sleep, PDP will steal the slip and write results as they always do. You said you want to change Okowa; the only way to change Okowa is to go out that day to vote. Vote for Buhari, vote for Ogboru and don’t vote Okowa that way, APC will win.”

The leader of the Delta Mainstream APC, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, told reporters that the APC will win in Delta with a wide margin.

He said: “Our people are waiting for the elections to come so that we can reciprocate President Buhari’s performance in the state. I can confidently tell you he will score over 80 per cent of the total votes in Delta with this massive turnout in next month’s election. APC has taken over Delta.”

Minister of State for Petroleum Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who spoke at the palace of the Ovie of Uvwie, where all Urhobo monarchs received the President, reeled out the achievements of the administration in Delta State and other parts of the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who is also contesting the Delta South Senatorial District election, said: “Mr. President, Delta people have seen what  you have done and they are ready to vote you in a second time.”

The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, also assured President Buhari will sweep the election in Delta State.

APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole urged President Buhari to probe the $16 billion power project fund appropriated by the PDP administration and ensure that everyone involved in the mismanagement is punished.

He said: “Yesterday (Wednesday), I was watching the television, I saw PDP presidential candidate and a former Customs officer (Atiku); he was saying in the likely event that If Nigerians make the mistake of their life to vote for him (Atiku) as president, he is telling Nigerians whether they like it or not, even if he would die, that he will sell oil reserves of Delta, Akwa Ibom, Edo states and that he would auction all oil properties of Nigeria whether they (Nigerians) like it or not.

“If somebody puts you on notice that if you vote for him, that he is going to sell your family, will you agree? Will you vote for him? When Atiku was the vice president, I was the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress. When they wanted to sell Nigeria Airways, when we told him no, he (Atiku) said he doesn’t care. He just wanted to sell Nigeria Airways.”

In Edo State, Oshiomhole told his kinsmen to use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to retire the PDP presidential candidate from politics.

The former Edo State governor urged the electorate to use their PVCs to stop Atiku’s  plan to use the country’s resources to enrich his friends, adding that Nigerians would not allow Atiku to reopen the vaults of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the PDP.

He said Nigerians should ponder if Atiku was the fit and proper person to replace President Buhari.

Oshiomhole, who prayed for Atiku to be alive to see the country’s growth under President Buhari, cautioned Nigerians to be wary of those who destroyed “our yesterday and now wear new clothes in other to compromise our tomorrow.”

He insisted that the APC won the 2015 election for President Buhari in the state if the PDP had not colluded with INEC to cancel 120,000 votes. The forthcoming elections will be decided by one-man-one vote because the PDP can no longer use the military to intimidate them, Oshiomhole told his audience.

Oshiomhole said the real revolution of President Buhari had shown that farmers now get value for money and the country is moving towards food security.

He said: “Those battles we fought before where PDP used the military to arrest our youth leaders and plant guns in the hotel rooms of APC leaders. In these coming elections, they will not be able to do so. In 2015, they deployed soldiers to my village to intimidate me but this time, they will not be able to do so.

“Our campaign for one man one vote will prevail.  Even with those preventive measures the PDP deploye,d we still won 45percent for Mr. President after PDP, in collision with INEC to ensure 120,000 votes were deleted. If those votes were not deleted, we would have delivered Buhari.”

President Buhari, who thanked Edo people for waiting for him for over six hours, assured them that he had made progress in his electoral promises on security, economy and corruption.

He said: “In the economy, we have empowered farmers. The CBN gave soft loans to farmers and we succeeded in food security. We are saving hundred of millions of dollars by growing our food. I congratulate Nigerians for that because they decided to go back to the land.

“On corruption, we are following the slow system where we present facts before the people. We are selling the recovered assets and putting the money into TSA. Sooner than later, I will direct the EFCC and ICPC to tell Nigerians what we have recovered and what we intend to do with them. Vote for all APC candidates. Give us the power to control the state Assembly, National Assembly and the Presidency.”

Ameachi described as “unfortunate” that former President Goodluck Jonathan could not give the Niger Delta water to drink.

He said Edo had benefited from the railway projects because several stations were built in many Edo villages where the Itakpa-Warri railway passes through.

According to him, nobody has the right to steal Nigeria’s money to become rich. He urged the people to stop the PDP from returning to power.

Governor Godwin Obaseki alleged that the former PDP administration demanded for $20 million bribe to give a letter to access money to build the Azura Power Project.

Obaseki promised to deliver one million votes for President Buhari.

Some chieftains of the PDP announced their defections to the APC.

In all, 1,904 candidates are vying for the 109 seats in the Senate; 4,680 are to battle for the 360 seats in the House of Representatives.

Kashamu described the development as “victory for resilience and the rule of law”, saying there was “no victor, no vanquished”.

He said with the publication of the final list by INEC, it was incumbent on lovers of the party to close ranks and work to deliver Ogun State for PDP.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers State, Mr. Obo Effanga, said the removal of names of APC  candidates for the February 16 and March 2 elections was in compliance with a court order.

Effanga said yesterday on a local radio in Port Harcourt that as a law-abiding commission, it had to comply with the order of the court.

Efforts were made by The Nation to speak with Rivers REC, but he did not answer his calls.

In a reply to a text message, Effanga said: “We (INEC) did not remove any name. We only published names of parties for the elections and APC is not on the list.”

The APC Publicity Secretary in Rivers State, Chris Finebone, in telephone interview yesterday evening, however, said the candidates of the party would be on the ballot for the elections.

Finebone added that the candidates of Rivers APC had just risen from a crucial meeting in Port Harcourt, where the issue of removal of names by INEC was extensively discussed. He was optimistic that candidates of the party would vie and win, “thereby putting the enemies of democracy to shame”.

INEC denied the allegation that it was issuing out Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to political party chieftains as claimed by PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to INEC chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the commission’s policy on collection of PVCs stands.

Oyekanmi maintained that no official of INEC would agree to collection by proxy.

  • Re: Buhari, Tinubu and the abdication of responsibility

Dele Momodu’s fecund but wild imagination is capable of producing some entertaining prose. But his fulsome inaccurate ruminations are far divorced from political fact. In effect, he has reduced himself to being a tabloid sage, an ersatz wise man who seeks to disguise his cavalier arguments in a torrent of words.

There is nothing wrong with people having different opinions. That is human nature and thus the very essence of the political craft. However, something is wrong when a person blatantly ignores the plain truth to hoist before the public eye what he knows to be incorrect just to prove a point.  This is more than a matter of style. It is a fault – a lack of connection to veracity. That person becomes more a sophist and a magician of words hoping to bedazzle his reader than a journalist or commenter seeking to educate the people.

This is the problem at the core of the above-titled article written by Momodu and published on the back page of Thisday edition of Saturday, January 12. Momodu hinged his article on a false premise, on misinformation and as such the article is not an article befitting a newspaper at all.

As Momodu seems to be suffering from an acute bout of aversion to the truth, it might help to feed him some reality.

While inaugurating the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2019 election at the State House Abuja on Monday January 12, President Muhammadu Buhari said the party’s National Leader and co- chair of the council, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, would “take full charge of the campaign”. This is the way he put it: ”…But I must also add that, though we will all be deeply involved, I would like to assure the nation that I will do my part without making governance or my work suffer. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my co-chairman, will be fully in charge, and is going to be on 24-hour vigil. That is to say, the operational buck of this campaign stops at his table, and I therefore urge all of us in the leadership of this campaign, in the field operations on the campaign trail and in the secretariat to consult with Asiwaju whenever guidance is needed”.

Online platforms and prominent national newspapers reported the president perfectly, quoting his words without giving it unintended or unwarranted interpretation.  A few days later, however, a bizarre collection of some unknown parties under the aegis of CUPP, Coalition of United Political Parties, purposely distorted the president’s statement. It also warned President Buhari against campaigning by proxy. The chairman of this group, Obasanjo subaltern, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, contended if Buhari would ask Tinubu to lead his campaign, then he should give way as the presidential candidate.

This same warped idea was regurgitated by Momodu in his column wherein he accused Buhari of abdication of campaign responsibility to Asiwaju. To him, the fine arrangement worked out by Buhari is a poisoned chalice. He surmised that the APC leader was set up to fail. Let us talk truth to each other.

Momodu is trying to make a mountain of a grain of sand.  Where in the world does a sitting president make himself the manager of his own campaign? Momodu would have a difficult time identifying where such a thing is custom. For many reasons, such a thing would be a foolhardy thing to do. The responsibility and correct things for any sitting president is to allow trusted allies to manage and coordinate the campaign. A decent and caring president, would devote the greater part of his time to the matters of governance. He will campaign only as the campaign requires. This is not where the bulk of his attention should reside. This is exactly as President Buhari has done.

Let’s change things around for the moment. I dare say Momodu would be up in arms if PMB had said he was going to devote himself to the campaign and that governance must take a backseat. Momodu would be the first to claim that the president had engaged in another form of abdication of duty.  Thus, the problem is not with the president but with Momodu. He had already put in his mind that he would criticize the president come what may. But this criticism has no weight except with those seeking any reason to say they are against the president. But for Momodu to hold to this flawed position, means he would also have to chastise every president he so often mentions as being great politicians. Kennedy, Obama, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Clinton, all of them must fall by the measure that Momodu now uses.  Again, Momodu has not said anything really bad about Buhari. What he is exposing is that his opposition to the man has led him into the land of the nonsensical.

Again to help Momodu of this self-induced fog, it may be good to repeat what the president said.  The president clearly said Asiwaju Tinubu, as co-chair of the campaign council, would take charge of the daily oversight of the campaign working in conjunction with the campaign director general and others. PMB would play his appropriate part in such a way that governance would not suffer on account of the campaign. That was gracious in my view.

The president did not say he would not be on the hustings. He did not stay he would sit back at Aso Rock while Tinubu mount the rostrum in his stead. To put to lie Momodu’s ramblings, the APC held a campaign rally in Bauchi.  Momodu should have the fortitude to tell the public if he saw President Buhari at the rally. Momodu has taken on the aspects of the current occupant of the White House. Both tend to say what they want without due regard to what is.

Two weeks earlier, President Buhari headlined the South–south kick-off rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Other rallies have been lined up and you will see the president there.

Momodu can go on and deodorise his candidate as he likes, that is perfectly within his right to do. But he has no right to twist an unequivocal statement to suit his fancy. Again, Tinubu and the APC have made their choice. For Asiwaju, the decision about how the present gains in governance and reform would not be frittered away, but preserved and improved upon for tomorrow and how the future of this country would be better served is clear in this election. Momodu may have a different take on things as is his right. But he does grave disservice to the truth and to the people by uttering falsehoods and by acting like what is normal campaign procedure for a sitting president the world over is somehow a nefarious undertaking in Nigeria. By so doing, Momodu is trying to do more than muddy the water, he is trying to tell us that mud is in fact water. If this is the best he can do for his side, then he has shown that their campaign is one of calumny and not issues. For all the words emitted, nothing but unintelligible noise has sallied forth.
