  • 2019: Ganduje kick starts guber campaign

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has kick-started his gubernatorial campaign in Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, where hundreds of thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gave him a resounding reception at the campaign ground at Tudun Wada.

Impressed by the turn out, he expressed his satisfaction and showed how encouraging the turn out was, adding that, “This shows how satisfied you are with the way we are developing the state and how President Muhammadu Buhari is also developing the country.”

He urged people to always compare the state of the nation before 2015 and now, after President Buhari is captaining the ship, challenging that, “It is very clear for all, that President Buhari’s coming to power from 2015, saves Nigeria from collapsing.

That is why we are still saying, he alone, among all other presidential contestants for the 2019 Presidential election, has the capacity to further develop our fatherland, Nigeria. We should give him another chance to continue with what he started. We all believe that continuity is the answer.”

He commissioned a power project at Gada Biyu town, of Tudun Wada local government, that before now plunged the area in total darkness, with some other projects like bridge among others. The governor assured the people that his administration would continue to deliver the good work it has been doing.

For the citizens to reflect back to the good things done to the areas, the governor reminded them of the many developmental projects also executed by the local governments, other federal government’s intervention in the area and some other projects done by both federal and national legislators as part of their interventions for the development of their areas.

Ganduje urged people to come en mass during the forthcoming election and cast their votes for Buhari, reminding them that, “I urge you to always remember, we promised to give our President Muhammadu Buhari, about 5 million votes. We should try and get this through our full participation at election time.”

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is taking Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to Wards across the nation. I am calling on people to make sure that they go and collect their PVCs. It is only when we have our voters cards that we can be able to support the coming back of President Buhari for the second tenure,” Ganduje pleads.

They described their joining of the ruling APC as timely and all-important. Assuring that, they would always work hard for the victory of the party at all levels.and are encouraged on what Buhari and Ganduje are doing for the development of the state and the country, in general, is open and clear for all to see.

After receiving a gift of a bag of rice, from Farmers Club under Sani Sarkin Noma, as a show of their appreciation on how Ganduje agricultural policies boost agriculture in the state, the governor commended Buhari for initiating a policy which abhors importation of rice to the country.

Nigerians, according to him, should first and foremost, commend Buhari for encouraging economic diversification largely through agriculture and other sectors of the economy.

“At the state level, we found it necessary to copy from the federal government’s initiatives. That was why we did our possible best to reinvigorate our fertiliser plant, that was abandoned for over two decades.

As I am making this speech here, our Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) is fully operational with unprecedented capacity. That we even take our fertiliser to other neighbouring states.

Fertiliser is no longer our problem in Kano now. We have since passed that stage, where you will see government distributing fertiliser to farmers. We have it in abundance and we take it to other states,” he explains.

Governor Ganduje urged traditional rulers of both Doguwa and Tudun Wada, to give their helping hand in seeing that peaceful election holds during the forthcoming elections. “As fathers of the land, yours should always be finding ways to encourage peace and tranquillity before, during and after elections.”

He made the call when he visited the District Heads of Doguwa and Tudun Wada at their respective palaces. He also urged them to inform their communities on the importance of collection of PVCs for the election ahead of them.

“Awareness creation campaign from the fathers of the land is necessary. So that full citizens participation in the election can be recorded as well,” Ganduje insists.

“I am urging you to cast your votes for all the APC candidates.

Oba  Adebowale had decried the deplorable roads linking the community with other parts  of state, insecurity, absence of a public hospital and a public secondary school.

He advised Abiodun to address them if elected.

Oba Adebowale noted that Isheri-Olofin was the cradle of Awori people and the first stool in Aworiland, whether in Lagos or Ogun state, lamenting the ill treatments meted out to the sons and daughters of the community.

He said it was sad that nobody from the community was in the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

The governor spoke at Kajola ward in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area in continuation of his campaign for Ogun Central Senatorial seat in the February National Assembly election.

  • Buhari approves Adamu as acting IG as Idris bows out today

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Abubakar Adamu Mohammed Lafia has been named as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IG).

Adamu’s appointment reportedly got the blessing of President Muhammadu Buhari, who met with IG Ibrahim Idris, who is expected to bow out of service today after attaining the retirement age of 60.

The appointment came following opposition from some quarters against possible tenure extension for IG Idris, who has also attained the statutory 35 years in service.

It was gathered that the acting IG was selected by the president among three names submitted to him after weeks of shopping for Idris’ replacement.

AIG Adamu, The Nation gathered, is a course mate of Force Secretary AIG Taiwo Lakanu and former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss Ibrahim Lamorde.

Until his appointment, the Lafia, Nasarawa State-born Adamu was serving at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

It was gathered that the officer, who, like Idris, spent many years working with the United Nations (UN) and the International Police (INTERPOL), will be officially announced today (Tuesday).

Confirming the development to The Nation, a source close to IG Idris said the decision was taken yesterday.

The source said: “It is true but the announcement has not been made yet. Oga (Idris) retires on Tuesday (today) having clocked 35 years in service. He has done well for the police and brought in many innovations.

“The new IG once served as Deputy Commissioner in Ekiti State Command, among other postings.”

The development confirmed a story exclusively reported by this newspaper on January 10.

A source, who spoke in confidence, told The Nation on January 9: “The President is not likely to extend the tenure of the IGP but he  is waiting for the statutory retirement day before making a pronouncement. You know, Buhari is a due process leader.

“The outgoing IG is most likely to hand over to the most senior Deputy Inspector-General of Police pending the appointment of a substantive holder.

“ If Idris leaves, there will be an Acting IGP and this will not affect security arrangement for the general elections So far, the IGP is expected to be preparing his handover note.”

  • Buhari seeks more global commitment on Lake Chad

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja called for more commitment from the international community on redirecting water to the shrinking Lake Chad.

He warned that about 40 million population in the region would pose adverse migration and security challenges to the world.

Speaking while receiving Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Philip Baker, at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari said the tragedy of the shrinking Lake Chad would keep fuelling more illegal migrations, banditry and provide willing hands for terrorism since majority of the people have lost their means of livelihood.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President said: “In 1920’s, an academic rightly predicted that except there’s a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it will dry up.

“Now, whenever I go for any global meeting or visit a country, I will always draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake, and the resulting negative effects,” he said.

Buhari urged the Canadian government to support the on-going efforts to divert water from the Congo River to the lake.

“Canada has the capacity to help us. The lake is now less than 10 per cent of its normal size. A redirection will help our people from getting into the Mediterranean Sea,” he added.

The President said Nigeria and Canada have good relations dating back to the early 60’s when Nigeria gained independence, hailing the country for “its vast resource utilisation and solid political background.”

The Canadian High Commissioner lauded the President for providing leadership in the country, and championing the cause for the replenishing of the Lake Chad Basin.

He noted that the Canadian Governor General, Julie Payette, had presented a picture taken from space of the vanishing lake to the President when she visited recently.

Baker said more than 11, 000 Nigerians were studying in Canada, with many residing in the country, assuring the President that majority of the students return to build and invest their knowledge in Nigeria’s growth.

The Canadian High Commissioner said he would work towards improving relations between both countries on migration, education, entrepreneurship training, mining, renewable energy and Information Technology.

Also receiving Letters of Credence from the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Wendy Campbell Laing, Buhari said Nigeria remains grateful for the training support for the military in the Northeast  since it started fighting Boko Haram.

  • Herdsmen attacks: Ortom ‘threatened Buhari before soldiers were deployed’

Benue State Deputy Governor Benson Abouno has given an account of the government’s fight against herdsmen attacks in the state.

Abounu said Governor Samuel Ortom became so frustrated that he told President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Benue.

The deputy governor spoke at a symposium organised by Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with Yavnielle Conzult, with the theme: “Displaced, Traumatised and Neglected”.

Abouno, who represented Ortom, dismissed insinuations the governor did nothing to stop the killings, saying the governor was on the President’s neck since the killings started in Agatu, Benue South, in 2016.

He said: “I know that Governor Ortom met with Mr. President three times over the killings. It was not until the last time when he threatened to declare a state of emergency that Mr. President directed the chief of Army staff (COAS) to deploy soldiers from the 72 special Battalion forces.

“In 2016, 98 persons were killed; two-year-olds were sliced and expectant mothers slaughtered, their stomachs turned open. I wonder if those killers were humans.

“Six councils in Agatu were taken over by herdsmen, who burnt houses and destroyed property worth billions of naira. People became homeless; it was a double tragedy.

“From Agatu, the killer herdsmen moved to Guma, Logo, Ukum, Katsina Ala, Otukpo, Apa, Kwande, Gwer, Gwer West, Okpokwu and Makurdi, which is the seat of power.”

Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Emmanuel Shior said there were 549,099 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in camps, and of this, 121,617 were children between one and nine months.

Shior lamented that the Federal Government had failed in its promise to build shelter for the IDPs, saying Ortom was the one providing food, education and the health needs of IDPs, as the Federal Government had neglected Benue IDPs.

He lauded the United Nations agency for its efforts towards the IDPs.

The two-day symposium seeks to draw attention of the world to the plight of IDPs.
